This is a very very fancy tapas restaurant with a diner esthetic and seating. The portions are very small, but the quality of ingredients and flavors were amazing. The service is great but any more than 4 people is very challenging to seat (reservations needed). Would definitely recommend to try at least once and for a celebration. This is a one of the more expensive/fancy places I've been in Toronto and the food is great, just beware of the portion sizes. The grilled lamb skewer will be on my mind for a long time... The booths really seat 4 comfortably (we were there with 6) and the bar could really hold pairs due to the room. The menu is also difficult to find substitutions if there are dietary restrictions in your party (just an FYI, this was not an issue for us). Due to the small size of the menu items, you'll need around 3-4 items per person (OR 3-5 apps + 2-3 "mains" per 2 people to share). A lot of the appetizers are designed for 2 people only. We were there for their Dinner menu, this might be different for other times of day. Order: - iceberg wedge, a balanced appetizer that was more compacted than a salad and great vehicle for the sauce and the puffed rice was a nice surprise - grilled brie toast, somewhat small, but for the density, it was substantial - octopus carpaccio, was very interesting, very thinly sliced octopus with lots of sauce (ink) - salmon tartare, very small portions, you'll need an order per 2 people - seared scallop, was very salty but otherwise great protein and texture/freshness - grilled lamb skewer, was tender and the sauce was very balanced read more

Aloette is a vibe -- the space is fashioned like a diner but has this timelessness to it. Because the space is long & rectangular it was almost like what I imagine traveling first class by train in the gilded age would've been like: Intimate but not claustrophobia-inducing. Fancy but not overly hoity toity. I mean the tables are maroon-colored formica and it just WORKS (and makes me want it in my house lol) The 90s hip hop bumping on the speakers was the cherry on top. Now that I'm done waxing poetic about the space -- let's talk the important stuff: the food & drank! The cocktail menu is small but super creative. The bartenders also know wsup; I asked for a paper plane and they made a stellar paper plane. We had the: *Beef Tartare Crostini - fennel, egg yolk, jalapeño- great lil' bites! no complaints! *'Nduja Stuffed Olives - halloumi, sourdough, chimichurri - love the presentation on metal cocktail picks. Really nice savory bite and quite flavorful. *East Coast Oysters - tiger's milk mignonette - probably one of the best if not the best migonette I've had. Migonette is my preferred topping on oysters so I've had quite a few variations now and this one is killer! *Iceberg Wedge - avocado, chive cream, puffed wild rice - WOW, not your grandmother's iceberg wedge. I don't even usually like iceberg wedge, but this had such good flavor, textures..perfection. It was also huge - plenty to share with a dining companion. *Aloette Burger - beaufort cheese, onion, lettuce - the beaufort cheese on this was a thing of beauty. Fantastic dining experience with my wife and our son. The staff are so attentive and welcoming, Marco served us and he was amazing. But of course the star is the food, every dish was delicious and beautifully presented. The complimentary cheese bread was my wife's favourite. We never felt rushed, and we had the whole evening to ourselves to enjoy the great food and conversation of the evening at a leisurely pace that was very relaxing. It's a sharing concept, so you order 5 to 7 dishes and don't worry the staff will guide you on wether you ordered adequately. Food: Painted Water: Very simple presentation, not super eye popping but sufficient. Excellent flavor really perfect blend of citrus and the white pepper is a phenomenal agent. 9/10 Octopus Carpaccio: good presentation. The black garlic worked with the inherent flavor of the octopus really nicely and the balance of the acidic peppers with it was great. Peppers also added a much needed texture. Octopus needed more texture. 7.5/10 Beef tartare: Steep price for just two pieces. Simple presentation but again sufficient. Great flavor and good texture. Caper and yolk mixture had a perfectly balanced flavor. Crispy toast. 8/10 Brie Toast: Very earthy dish. Rich flavors throughout but brilliant balance of flavors and textures. Fried well and tender chicken but breaker could have been better. 7/10 Prime Short Rib: Excellent beef quality very well marbled. Outstanding texture, not fall apart but really melts in your mouth. Perfect medium rare and a perfect sear. Maitake mushrooms also cooked perfectly and had great texture. Gochujang sauce was almost inconsequential to the dish. Richer flavor that lacked and balance or any flavor to change the highlights of the dish at all. My overall rating is 3.5. Here is the breakdown: The food: Stuffed Olives - 4/5 - a touch salty but lovely nevertheless. Crispy Squash - 6/5 - this was the star of the show. We loved it! The burger - 3.5/5 - it was a bit dry tbh. The pork - 5/5 - it was a really good protein dish with a slight charred flavor and it came together really well. Fries - 2.5/5 - we may have gotten an unfortunate batch of burnt ends but they left a distinct burnt taste that was unpleasant. Pie - 5/5 - it's a massive portion that can easily feed two people and it's very good! Service: The service was lovely and attentive. They give you clean plates between meals and wipe down your table which was a nice touch. Ambiance: It's a very narrow diner style restaurant. 3.5/5 is a more appropriate rating. Overall - disappointing. Don't get me wrong the food was above average but at the price point, should have all been a culinary masterpiece. Portions are very small relative to the price. The waitress said we ordered too much food and some of us left hungry - we were 3 people and ordered 4 mains + a side. The menu online is outdated - does not have up to date menu items or prices so expect 25% increase in price. I'm not sure if they recently changed it in the new year. Specifically - any dish with lamb was fantastic, the quality meat and pairing of ingredients was exquisite- tried the lamb skewers and lamb ragu pappardelle. I would say these were more on-par with what I expected from a Michelin recommend restaurant. The crispy butternut squash had the most potential but was too salty, perhaps there was an error on the dish, although at this level of fine dining - not acceptable. Lot of potential! It did not taste like squash at all, almost reminded me of a ricotta pasta texture on the inside. If you are coming here, I would say get it as this is probably the dish closest to a culinary masterpiece. The scallop dish was good but nothing out of this world. The Wagu burger was such a disappointment. The meat quality was elevated and very tasty, although the bun was flaking off into my fingers and it was very messy. This dish could have used more salt, it was fairly plain tasting. The service was great - better than average - as expected. They were very efficient and the food came fast. In two segments - two dishes arrived, plates were replaced with new ones and the next two dishes arrived. Water was always full. They were focusing on turning the table around - you cannot linger for even a second. The ambiance was nice, different vibe - depending on how you like to eat, could be seen as not nice - small place, very packed and not spacious to allow more people in the restaurant... VERY DARK INSIDE - BASICALLY NEED A FLASH LIGHT TO SEE YOUR FOOD. Not sure if that helps you taste the food more... Overall, I likely would not return or recommend. Walked by multiple times and decided to go for lunch, turned into one of the best meals I had in Toronto. Started with tomato and mozzarrella, varied assortment of perfect heirloom tomatoes but with a unique dressing that elevated it above typical Caprese salad. The main course was even better, had the fried chicken special, which was an Asian style chicken breast served that you wrapped in lettuce with a side sauce. It was so good I kept debating whether to use the also good sauce because I loved the flavour without it. I also truly enjoyed the fried squash, which was indescribably good. The sauce was almost a hollandaise and it included toasted pumpkin seeds that were incredible but did not taste like pumpkin seeds. When my girlfriend and I decided to place a reservation for Aloette, we didn't know what we were in for. We arrived at around 9:15 PM for the dinner service, and it was packed. It was so packed that our booth wasn't ready yet and we were seated at the bar until seats opened up. Looking around at the restaurant, our first impression was that it was on the smaller side and it was loud- the volume of the music combined with the number of people we were eating with just made it hard to talk to each other, even though we were sitting side by side. Although the ambiance and the size of the restaurant weren't what we were looking for tonight, the food and the service made up for it. 100%. For drinks, we ordered the Peach Tea Lemonade and the Boylan Black Cherry. I feel like these two drinks were definitely for an acquired taste- we found that the lemonade was a little too sour and not sweet enough, while the Boylan was too sweet and tasted a little too similar to cough syrup and maraschino cherries. If we were to come back to Aloette, I think we would be trying different drinks. For appetizers, we ordered a portion of the Triple Cooked Fries with the Aioli. The fries were amazing- they tasted like they were seasoned beyond just salt and pepper, and the combination of the nicely seasoned fries and the garlic aioli made them so much more addicting. For our main courses, I got the Roasted Branzino, while my girlfriend got the Ricotta Agnolotti. The Branzino was butterflied and fried perfectly, with a generous amount of chimichurri garnished on top, and capers on the underside of the fish for a nice flavourful punch. I'm not going to lie, it was a little pricy, but as soon as I tasted the fish, it felt like it was worth much more. The Ricotta Agnolotti was divine- you can tell as soon as you bite into the Agnolotti was made with all fresh ingredients. The short ribs were cooked in the perfect middle ground- not too chewy, but not bloody red inside. Safe to say that the Agnolotti was finished within minutes. Eating at Aloette is for the experience- if you're looking for something budget-friendly, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. I was willing to splurge tonight, and it was so worth it, I would do it again if I could. The dishes were flavorful, fresh and unique. I don't do lemon desserts but the meringue pie was a must!! Most of the menu wow'd us: olives and scallops were delicious and interesting, the drinks were a perfect balance of sweet and boozy, and the foie gras sundae was a little bit daring and a lot of flavour. The weakest dish here though was definitely the pork secreto. It was pork without any delicious fats or herbs, and it became a fairly dry piece of meat. Staying with the rest of the menu should give you an incredible meal though. The decor is gorgeous and intimate, perfect for date night. Space is fairly limited though so reserve early. read more

Very small nice restaurant. I booked in advance because I knew it was difficult to find a spot. We seated on the bar counter as I reserved. My husband ordered the lamb rack, while I tried the burger. While you wait your food, they serve you a terrific bread with butter. That was delicious. The burger was good, but normal (not outstanding like the one I ate at Richmond Station). And the fries were too crunchy (some of them also burnt). The lamb was definitely better (tender and juicy), but the portion very very small. We finished our meal with their famous lime pie. A really huge portion. If you eat just the part with lime is very sour, so you need to eat with the meringa to reduce the bitterness. But it's a very good tart. Overall, the experience was good included a good service. If I have to say something is that the price are high for the portion you receive (just the pie was very big). read more

I haven't had much French food and Aloette definitely left a good impression on me. My friend and I came for dinner and we had to make those reservations nearly a month in advance in order to get those spots. The host seated us almost immediately and the service was pretty good overall. It definitely gives high end but also diner vibes. As for the food, we ordered 4 things including the tuna tartare with uni, lamb ragu pappardelle and the grilled octopus. The octopus was cooked perfectly and I liked the sauce, it was flavorful but I wish I had a carb to balance it out. The pappardelle was cooked very nicely and I loved how the lamb complemented it. The lamb was tender but also a little crispy which gave the dish another level of texture. The tuna tartare and uni was good but it was a tad fishy for my liking. As for drinks, I loved that they were served in a chilled glass. I got the strawberry daiquiri and it was refreshing and perfect with my meal. Lychee beer by blood brothers is my favourite anyways! But it is not available anywhere other than blood brothers or Aloette. And it is only available on tap. But lets talk about the food, so having a limited menu I expected every dish to be unique, so most of them were okay except from the burgers which were like any other regular burger place, although the fries on the side took the limelight of that platter. For myself I ordered pesto pasta dish( meatless option) and I was so glad I did it, it was very unique in its taste, the complimentary home baked bread with yeast butter is unforgettable. i crave for it many days. Yummm. Can't forget the yeast butter. So delicious and has such a perfect cheesy texture and aroma. But the quantity was less for 2 people , i wish they refilled it. Food: lovely. They have a variety of options, all reasonably priced and meant for sharing. Between the two of us we tried four dishes: the East coast oysters, iceberg wedge, stuffed chicken wings and Aloette burger. The portions were generously satisfying; we ended up not finishing the salad. Service: pretty good. We arrived on time for our reservation and had to wait a few minutes for the previous group to finish up at our table. It's a small restaurant so delays are understandable. Our server was cordial, explained the menu to us and made suggestions. Ambiance: cool & cozy. It's a very small intimate restaurant with a late 20s to 50+ crowd. They played a lot of 90s hip-hop and R&B which was interesting. The ladies bathroom is cute. Overall I highly recommend this restaurant to any foodie. Finally was able to snag a reservation and try Aloette as it's been on my list for years and I always pass it going up Spadina. The inside isn't very big so I can see why they need reservations often. Service was great and we were offered coat check right at the front, which i'm sure comes in handy when winter is around. Sitting at the bar was so nice because you're able to observe the kitchen staff as well as watch the bartender make all the cocktails. The menu is small but i think it really allows them to focus on those dishes. We were recommended to try the foie gras, the ravioli, beef tartare and the pineapple rum sundae. We did make a mistake of having a "pre dinner" so we weren't as hungry as we thought we would (I was eyeing the burger beforehand but ultimately knew i couldn't finish it). We ended up just ordering the foie gras, beef tartare and the pineapple rum sundae. We were told the foie gras is not the typical savoury pate, but more on the sweet end. I enjoyed it with the toast but I think I would've liked it with a bit more bread to balance out the sweetness since there was some maple syrup on it as well. The beef tartare was really good! Potato chips were house made and not overly salty so we could really enjoy the tartare. I found it nice for texture that they also had pinenuts in it. Finally the pineapple rum sundae was delicious, pineapples were the hidden gem at the bottom and the tartness cut through the sweetness of the ice cream! Food: 4/5 In terms of taste, I have zero complaints. We started off with the octopus carpaccio, which was definitely the favourite that night. Such a delightful combination of tangy and savoury flavours. But at 28$... the portion given is not it. Same could be said for the beef tartare, which tasted amazing with a nice tang from the diced pickles mixed within the tartare, but for just the 2 small pieces served, I doubt I would order or recommend anyone from ordering this again. The wedge salad however was such a surprising hit! The mixture of both light and creamy along with the crunch of the toasted nuts and popped rice... WOW. It pairs beautifully with any savoury option and definitely compliments the flavours of the rest of the menu. I highly recommend ordering this one. As for the mains, I personally found the aloette burger overrated. I did appreciate that the onions still had a nice crunch and weren't just left to sit in a grill. It's clear that there was attention and effort taken to ensure all aspects of the burger were cooked perfectly. Definitely a good burger but there are better things on the menu. The lamb skewer was absolutely spectacular. Not every place does lamb right but aloette has it bang on. This dish was by far our favourite of the night... such a tender and fatty meat paired beautifully with the puree. I will say this is a bit on the oily side but I thoroughly enjoyed it. My biggest complaint is the portions! Just one tiny skewer for 20$. Even at this price point, this item should considered an appetizer. We ended it off with the lemon meringue pie which was collectively hated. I'm sure those who love super sour desserts would love this one but for us... it was just too sour we could feel it behind our ears. The meringue and crumbly crust of the pie was delightful though. Overall, despite the great taste of the menu, I can't help but be disappointed at the appalling portions here at aloette. Service: 5/5 Servers were all so attentive!!! There were moments where I was worried I was too close to the party next to me or whether or not my water glass was mine or some strangers. A lovely meal! Everything was excellent. We arrived for early dinner without a reservation and got a seat at the bar. Keep in mind the restaurant is tiny, and looks like an upscale RV. Service was very attentive. Complimentary cheese brioche - warm and pillowy. Delicious but a little greasy and heavy; I would have preferred sourdough. Wedge salad - must get. This is one of their menu highlights. It looks like a plain half a head of lettuce with some toppings, but actually has a delicious and light, creamy dressing that permeates through the layers. There is a thin layer of avocado and a layer of crisped rice and seeds that give a satisfying and hearty touch! Lamb ragu - good, a hearty tomato sauce with meaty cubes of lamb. Burger and fries - fries were very good. Note that you get a huge portion. The burger was requested to be cooked to medium, but it was almost well done. The little things they did made us feel very appreciated and elevated the experience. Recommendation: if you're wondering if you should get the burger, do yourself a favour and get the glorious burger. As for their star dessert, lemon meringue pie, if you truly like tart desserts, you'll like it. My partner and I were trying to go to another restaurant on a whim which ended up being a long wait so we walked by Aloette and felt fortunate that they were able to squeeze us in, as there was a last minute cancellation. Given that we weren't super hungry, we split the olive appetizer, wedge salad, burger and the lemon meringue pie. The complimentary bread and butter was fantastic and a strong start to the meal. I typically don't get excited about a salad (especially with iceberg lettuce) but this dish was the highlight of our meal! It was a unique and well-balanced combination in terms of flavours and textures. The burger was excellent, but nothing super memorable. The olive appetizer was a delicious standout as well! The only disappointment of the night was the lemon meringue pie, although I should preface that I'm not a huge fan of lemon desserts. Thought we would dress up and treat ourselves to lunch here at this awesome place. Made a reservation at the bar, which I love. Nothing cozier than sitting at the bar chatting to people. We ordered a Spanish Pinot to start. Lovely and crisp. Then we ordered the chicken, wedge salad and cavetelli. The chicken were thighs deep fried to perfection and served with a side of pickled vegetables, hot sauce and butter lettuce to wrap your chicken in. Was delish. Wedge salad was crisp with nuts, and avocado and I think a buttermilk type dressing. The cavetelli had a perfect smoky cream sauce with chopped up broccolini. We loved everything. Service waa pleasant and top knotch. Everyone was definitely observant of our needs. It was a nice calming vibe that ensures good dinner experience. Bread service - yummy potato bread that had baked cheese on top until it became part of the crust. So delish we asked for another for pasta 5/5 Foie gras on toast - sweetness came through with maple syrup but complex to carry it through the foie gras. The bread was hearty enough for a contrast to the texture 5/5 Tuna tartare - well presented but truly is an amuse bouche (one bite) 3.5/5 Rack of Lamb - earthy tones coming from both eggplant and shishito ... very good but wanted a hit of acid 4/5 Cavatelli Pasta - guanciale and chanterelle shined in this dish with the luscious bite/textureof the cavatelli. When I got a next day reservation at Aloette I wasn't expecting what I walked into the following day. Aloette has roughly 7 tables with 10 bar stools, it's arguably one of the smallest restaurants in the city, and possibly the entire GTA. However at the end of our experience I was shocked that I was able to get a reservation with such short notice, this place is so unique and so small you'd figure it would be months needed for a reservation. The food at Aloette does not rise above other restaurants of its calibre, this isn't to say the food was bad, or over priced, but it wasn't what makes the place so great. The foie Gras dessert was truly one of a kind and quite amazing, and the entres all sounded desirable with the exception of the wagyu burger, considering the majority of the menu was French and any wagyu from a restaurant that is not A Japanese, or a known stake house is questionable. What really blew me, and my party away was the service. It was unlike any other I'd been to in Toronto. Our sever contained a level of grace and delicacy, along with being quite nice and knowledgeable. Furthermore it was unbelievable how surgical they were with our water, not at any point was our water empty, it was constantly filled or topped up literally any time a server walked past our table. The food was fast and plated well, but again take into consideration they could serve a maximum of 30 people. I'll go back to Aloette, and I would recommend it to anyone, as much as the food is great, it's not the best meal I've had in the city, but it's not far down the list. read more

I first tried Aloette a couple of years ago and wasn't that impressed, but wrote it off as my expectations being too high given I wanted it to be as good as Alo. Seeing it was open for takeout and reading lots of amazing recent reviews, I thought, what the heck, let's give this another try. Meh. I kinda still have the same take. The mini buns you can get across Aloette/Alo/AloBar are out-of-this-world-amazing. But the two Aloette-specific stuff I got were both just, well, fine. The burger was juicy and had lots of cheese, but wasn't as tasty as I'd expect it to be given the hype and cost. And the crispy chicken sandwich had a huge chunk of chicken and good meat-to-coating ratio, but the chicken itself was a bit bland and unmemorable. If the best thing about the burger and chicken sandwich was the perfect side fries that came with them, I know I'm taking my stomach elsewhere. Aloette is fine, and unfortunately, that just isn't enough for me. read more

I ordered this as takeout and LOVED it. I've been all about trying new restaurants during COVID19 to support local businesses and this was one of the top of my list. A few things I ordered: 1. aloette burger & fries- I have been on a burger kick and I LOVED this. The patty was thick and tasty, the fries were fresh, and the overall portion was able to justify the cost. 10/10 2. iceberg wedge- I read a lot of good reviews for this so I ordered this. As I had ordered from UberEats, the menu selection was pretty limited. If I had the chance to go to their real restaurant in the future, I think I would skip this dish and try another appetizer instead. This dish didn't wow me nor think it was anything spectacular for the price point. 8/10 3. dinner rolls- I was looking online and saw that people had raving reviews about their complimentary bread so when I saw this on UberEats (which charges for them), I thought, why not? I'm not sure if these are the same as the ones that they serve complimentary when you dine-in because these were very average broiche-like dinner rolls. In fact, it was overly salty to the point where I didn't understand why bread recipe usually call for salt since I usually don't taste it. But in this case, the salt was overwhelming; screaming at my taste buds like #noticeme. 5.5/10 Overall, I'd come back for the burger & fries and if dining in, try some other apps. I feel like I should love this resto-bar, and yet I don't. For $18 I expected a well-crafted cocktail, yet what I received was beyond underwhelming. The foie gras on toast was tasty and tiny. The marinated cucumber salad was okay, but didn't compare to similar versions of the same dish that I recently enjoyed in Montreal. The burger, with that beautifukl sizzling slice of beaufort cheese on top, was not too shabby but far from amazing. And the music just sucked -- like Pharrell Williams' Frontin and songs like that, which for me, didn't create a cool vibe at all. Sorry Aloette. When it comes to cocktails, food and vibe, I think you need a lesson from Jen Agg, whose resto-bars (Le Swan, Bar Vendetta, Grey Gardens, Rhum Corner) are just a cut above. read more

I really have nothing bad to say. I never knew fried chicken could taste so light, fresh and indulgent at the same time. It was lightly drizzled with this sweet preserves. Wrapping it with butter lettuce and pickled veg is such a unique idea and topped perfectly with this spicy sauce. We also ordered the Aloette burger which was also quite good. Every ingredient felt so well thought out and complemented perfectly with each other. They also provide small slice of brick buttery toast on the house, which was nice touch but really made us too full to try anything else. We got to sit right at the bar in front of where the food comes out. The desserts we saw looks quite good too, definitely interested to try it along with other dishes when we go next time. Probably will go for the gnocchi next time, since the waitress recommended the fried chicken and the gnocchi. The fried chicken was already a win. Service was attentive, washrooms were lux. Aloette - Aloette Burger - $20, Fried Chicken -$28 - French Near Me - Toronto, Ontario

I've been drooling looking in the window many times over the last 4 years of Aloette being open on Spadina. I had to think about a nanosecond before offering to take my date there for a birthday celebration. I dropped her off and went to park the car nearby. Since it was before 7pm and parking isn't allowed on Queen St., I lucked out and found a spot right on Spadina northbound just on the other side of Queen, the start to an awesome romantic night out! It was only around 6pm on a Wednesday, but I didn't want any surprises so I emailed ahead and reserved a spot, at the bar, ok,, the bar hmmmm. When she walked in and heard that, she said nokay and can we get a booth instead cuz birthday visit and all, and they accommodated us, of course! Since it was dark and early in November, Spadina was still intensely bustling which was a little distracting at first sitting so close to the sidewalk outside, but after getting used to it, the cocktails started to work their magic and we settled nicely into the cozy booth. Even though the empty-ish restaurant was starting to fill up and get louder and more hectic, I did not feel any kind of pressure on the staff who presented as professional and ready to deal with the little things like food allergies discussions, which are about as enjoyable as listening to the Joker's annoying laughing, I'm sure for them. Like everyone says, the bread is delicious and I loved the aroma from it and the roasted yeast butter. We shared everything, including a burger which was as amazing as everyone said, and again agreeing with the candied squash, really yummy! But what stood out the most was the Foie gras on toast with the slivers of Parmesan, deep intensely delicious it was. And how fitting; with the restaurant name eliciting images of French birds being prepared for a feast, and the creamy rich goose pâté presented to us so perfectly. Like the saying goes, quit while you're ahead, and with a couple cocktails, those 3 little dishes at the same time we found deeply satisfying, kept us wanting more.
