Before the Restaurant Impossible episode featuring the formerly named Island Kine Grinds aired in January, ownership had quietly changed hands since the show was filmed the previous May. Renus and Ludi Domingo, whose struggles were showcased by Robert Irvine, sold out to a mysterious entity Sport Island Llc, which has no listed online history, only a drop box address in Sheridan, Wyoming, according to a filing with the Idaho Secretary of State's Office. We ordered the lumpia appetizer while deciding on entrees. Lumpia is a Filipino specialty but fit the former owners' concept; they were natives of Hawaii but pegged their restaurant as serving Hawaiian and Asian fare. Strangely, though, the lumpia used beef as the meat, when typically pork is featured. They tasted good, but they were greasier than any I've eaten before. I ordered an adobo plate lunch with rice and mac salad, Hawaiian standard side dishes. The adobo was tasty and came with a flavorful sauce. The mac salad was bland, a definite downturn from what the previous owners provided. Kristy ordered kalua pig, a Hawaiian specialty. Instead, they brought her pork katsu. She chose to eat it, as we had already waited more than 20 minutes for the dishes to arrive. The pork was dry and the rice provided on her plate was seriously undercooked. Where mine was tender, hers was crunchy. Despite only one other table in the restaurant filled on an early Saturday evening, neither of the servers checked back with us. We were almost ready to leave before one came to ask if we wanted a refill of our soda pops. Maybe it explained why Kristy got the wrong dish when the server came with our bill and asked what I had ordered. I thought she wrote it down when we ordered. Maybe not. All in all, it wasn't a bad experience, but one we're not likely to drive from Boise to try again. We were interested in seeing how having the Restaurant Impossible experience had improved the restaurant for the Domingos. I found the location on Yelp and stopped in around 11:30am for lunch. I got the menu and went with the kalua pig which comes with rice and macaroni salad. When it was brought to the table I was shocked at how much there was. You will not go hungry here. The meat was well seasoned and okay. I had to try out this local restaurant after seeing it on Restaurant Impossible. It seems that after the show they made great improvements. The interior fit the theme of the restaurant, it gave very Hawaiian tiki vibes. The menu wasn't very big but they did have various options to choose from. I went with the kahlua pork. It had great flavor and was very tender. I liked the macaroni salad but it was a very small portion. The servers were all very nice and the food didn't take too long to come out. This place is clean and neat, decorated so that I could almost imagine that I was somewhere tropical, super cute! The waitress was very welcoming, pleasant, and attentive; we were seated right away. Hubby decided on teriyaki chicken, I had the shoyu chicken. We were served promptly, the food was nice and hot, and delicious. We both had enough to fill us, and ended up taking almost a full plate home as leftovers, along with a slice of homemade pineapple upside down cake, yum! We have been here a few times before Restaurant Impossible came and it was pretty good. But a few days after the renovation, name and menu change ( name is now Aloha Island Grille) we thought we'd try it again. First of impression: it's clean and you definitely get the island vibe, there was a counter in the middle of the front so we were not sure if we ordered there or sat down but a girl saw our confusion and gave us menus and told us to sit wherever we would like. Sat down and we're immediately brought plastic table ware and cups. Menu was small with only a few choices, no smaller portion options or lighter eaters or for kids. We decided to get a couple things & share. Food came out in about 15 mins... Pork Katsu was tasty. Nice crunchy light breading, pork not super juicy but then again it was pretty thin. Katsu sauce was great! This was served over rice topped with sautéed greens. Also got the poke wrap which was alright. Not much flavor for having poke, seaweed salad, edamame and rice. All could have used some seasoning but it was all fresh and done to order. Overall we had a pleasant experience, got to talk to the owner who came over to see how we were liking things and he was very nice- he also treated us to the Carmel chocolate mousse! Would recommend trying it out, I know we'll be back to try some other things on the menu and hope they bring back some more of the authentic Hawaiian "plate lunch" style they had before. read more

The sever was friendly. I tired again. The last time I was here I was disappointed. Now I'm very disappointed and grossed out. I lived in Hawaii for 3 1/2 years and this is no longer Hawaiian food. For entrees we had the loco moco and chicken katsu. Both dishes had good flavors and while my wife liked hers more than I did I felt like the dishes fell a little flat. I will say the burger was seasoned well and while the brussel sprouts were unique it had nothing to do with Hawaii. I would've loved a side of mac salad instead:...the 4 star is really because of the grind that the owner is enduring. We should've taken it as a sign when NO ONE was there, that we should've left. The atmosphere is actually really nice, and it's clean on the inside. However, the food was hands down, the WORST Hawaiian I've ever had. First of all, their menu was shorter than what is pictured on their advertising. My husband got the Pork Katsu- and the Katsu was burnt. And everything was SWIMMING in some sort of teriyaki sauce. He did substitute the coconut rice for plain white sticky rice, so I cannot speak on that. I got the Island Fried Chicken. First of all, the Mac salad was horrible. I know you can make Mac salad out of any kind of pasta, but this was made with huge rigatoni type noodles- rather than the elbow macaroni. This Mac was so vinegary, I couldn't eat it. We both left our plates more than half full. We ordered a spam musubi, and never got it. Then had to proceed to tell them to take it off the bill. How they forgot to bring us part of our order- when we were the only customers there, is beyond me. Also, they don't scoop the sides as they pictured. It's ladled on the plate. I found Nampa's best kept secret! The new Island Grill on the BLVD. I thought it was good, but now it is great! The decor fits the theme. Tiki style with ska and regae music playing in the background and most importantly clean. The menu is simple, but has a good array of items. The amount of food you get for the price is generous. I had the Musubi and it was the best I've had in or out of a restaurant and about the size of a burrito and very flavorful. The Adobo pork, WOW! SOooo tender it melted in my mouth and the Hawaiian Mac salad is as good as it gets.The server was very friendly and attentive.The wait was less than 10 minutes. I am definitely coming back! I have never had such awful service from a restaurant before. I have never been spoken to or accused of stealing food before. I am in absolute disbelief. I am 8 months pregnant and had gotten a gift card and paid additional with cash because they called and said their card machine was down so I would have to pay with cash or check. I get there and their Pepsi is out so she asks if I want something else and then all of a sudden they are using what seems to be a personal can instead of the fountain. The lady helping me doesn't even give me the right change back I had to tell her. I asked if the sauce and everything was in the bag more than once. I get home and I am completely missing my entrees. I call and she said she needs to check the camera insinuating I stole the food that they never gave me. She asked me to repeat my order 2 times, they should have my order and know what I ordered!? They call back all of a sudden she doesn't have time to check the cameras and tells me to come back making up excuses after excuses. Says she is going to call the owner ivan but doesn't know if he will answer because he is a truck driver. I said I'd like my meal replaced on another day I'm not able to drive all the way back there (20 minutes) and she was coming across like she was trying to physically fight with me come in come in and we will talk. it was awful! The foam box the lumpia is placed in is melted on the side from what she said was the warmer... so that's how you give customers their food? A total of $50 + and we get appetizers cold, no sauces and no food for dinner. I called very upset and she is being hostile and even admits it saying she's being this way, apologizes and then starts trying to fight with me again . Cussing on the phone too I'd never been spoken to like that before EVER. Especially from someone at a RESTAURANT you get better service at Jack in the box at 1am or McDonald's. Keeping in mind I drive there to pick it up, have to make sure I have cash. And then get home with no food. I ask for the owners phone number this lady is so mean. his name is supposedly Ivan and is a truck driver again, so I could speak to him about my service and picking up our meal voucher another day and she gives me an out of service phone number. I'm not sure why island people like Spam musubi, but it was popular on the island I lived on in Alaska, and it's popular down in Hawaii and they have it here, which automatically gets an extra star from me. This place has exceptional value for the money; the portions are generous and the food is tasty. However, it's all a little blander than I remember these dishes. The "Da Grinds" Mix plate will give you a good idea of what the place has to offer, and I think could feed two people if they have a small appetite. The owner is a character and fun to chat with. We still got charged for that plate. I ordered the poke wrap... It was supposed to have pineapple and Aioli sauce, and sushi rice, um... Neva have either one, had fish chunks, that was great but no flavor, just fish. Poke should be in a mixture, this was just chunks of Ahi. Don't get me wrong I am impressed by that. I've had sushi at places here in Idaho that grind the Ahi up (gross). Basically the wrap was not worth $14. I posted a picture of the menu, you can see what should be in the dishes. I decided to try this out with a friend for a mid-week lunch. The food tasted good but did not leave an exceptional presentation like one would expect for exotic fare. I had the Loco Moco, rice based dish with beef patty and fried egg garnished with brussel sprouts and a savory brown sauce. He had the Island Fried Chicken. The waitress also served us a sample of the mac salad and it was delicious, not too sweet with flavors that blended well. Our waitress was friendly and happily went about her duties making a pleasant experience. The restaurant venue inside was clean with nicely upholstered booths. The main issue this day was all the flies inside. They were not only pesky but presented a health hazard by landing on the food, cups and drinking straws. My friend even found a dead one hiding underneath a piece of pasta on the bottom of his plate, possibly from when the food was plated. This is unacceptable and the management should be treating these before the restaurant opens. We arrived only 45 minutes after opening to encounter this situation. Pleasantly surprised! Well I set my bar pretty low. Seeing that I grew up on real Hawaiian food, I figured this place would probably disappoint. I got the Island Chicken and it was pretty yummy. The flavor wasn't at all what I would consider Hawaiian but it did have an Island fusion about it. The Mac salad had bits of cilantro in it that threw me off, but it actually worked! The chicken was pretty well flavored but slightly dry with a bit too much spicy mayo for my liking. All in all, I actually enjoyed my meal and I'd definitely try this spot again. I'd recommend that the restaurant marinate the chicken a bit longer and go gentle on the spicy mayo. Overall I really liked my food and ate it all up. We start by walking in and being told we could seat ourselves, so we find a seat by the back window and look over the menu. Having lived in Hawaii for 3 years, I was ecstatic to hear that a restaurant in Nampa had Chicken Long Rice on the menu. It was something one of the moms from our old church made, and I had never seen it on a Hawaiian menu in the treasure valley since I moved here in 2002. I've been a CK Hawaiian loyalist since they first opened 14 years ago, but I wanted to give Island Kine Grinds a fair shot. We ordered my nostalgic Chicken Long Rice, as well as "Da Grinds" which was a sampler featuring their teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef, as well as the Kalua pork my wife loves. After sitting for five minutes, we weren't sure if we were supposed to order at the front or wait for the server come by to take our order. The time was well spent killing the seven flies hanging around our window, wouldn't want them hanging around our food. The girl comes by and asks if we would like anything to drink. My wife asks what kind of Hawaiian Sun they have, to which we are told they are completely out. She continues to disappoint with the news that their carbonation for their soda machine is out, so they only have self service water. That's fine, I wanted water anyways. The food arrives, and I ask for chopsticks. One more thing they are out of. Now I get to eat this meal awkwardly as well, hooray. I'm excited to find the closest thing to resemble authentic chicken long rice I've seen in over 17 years. I recall chicken being shredded to the same consistency as the noodles, and not as little chunks underneath the rice noodles. Regardless, the flavor was there, so I'm willing to look past small details from the first half of my life. Da Grinds were another story. Here's the condensed version. Teriyaki Chicken - The best part of the plate. Chicken was done well, teriyaki flavor was well balanced. Kalua Pork - Calling it pulled pork would be more accurate. As pulled pork, it's pretty good. As Kalua Pork, it lacks moisture, seasoning, and cabbage. Teriyaki Beef - Shoe leather that requires a bath in teriyaki sauce. The Mac salad is good, but not great. It's just a bit too bland for my tastes. All of this is written with a comparison to CK Hawaiian and my time living there, so I'm biased on flavors, but I went in with a ton of hope and excitement. As we were ordering, this happened, "Mom's is going to be different, the chicken terriyaki, instead of the bed of cabbage it comes on can we get fried noodles, and, "We can't do that." Pause Longer pause, to give her time to suggest something...nope, said not a word, just stared at me. "OK, then leave off the cabbage, and order fried noodles." Scribbling... "You can order a side of fried noodles." Huh? "That's what I just said." Stare "We'll start with 2 orders of pot stickers." "Anything else for the table?" "Yes, my meal." Stare "The 3 meat platter." Stare Leaves Good grief. I might tolerate poor, rude service a little more if the food had knocked my socks off. It did not. Pot stickers had FREEZER BURN. ALL meat gravely underseasoned, bland. The Mac salad, I think, comes out of a box. Mac noodles, mayo, tiny TINY slivers of carrot, and something tiny, green and slightly firm I'm guessing was pickle. No seasoning. Super authentic and delicious Hawaiian food! This place is quickly becoming my favorite restaurant in Nampa. The moment you walk inside, you notice the Hawaiian decor and ambiance. We were immediately greeted by a friendly face and then had to make the hardest decision. Ultimately I settled on having their Teriyaki Beef which was amazing! I sampled some of my wife's Teriyaki Chicken and whoa was that one delicious as well. My next goal is to try something new on the menu next time we visit. My wife and I first had a taste of their delicious food at a wedding they catered about a month ago. We tried checking them out off Garrity but turns out they had moved. Every previous time I have come to Island Kine I have loved the quality of food and the employees have always been kind. Tonight I attempted to call in an order, I called once and was sent to voicemail. I attempted to call again and it rang and rang and then went to voicemail again. I went online and it showed they were open for two more hours. I thought maybe they were busy so I drove down to see if there was a line. No cars in the parking lot but the open sign was still on with employees inside. I parked and started to head inside and when they saw me coming they just turned the open sign off and ignored me. I would've just liked to be told if they're closed, busy, or something happened, but instead they just turned the sign off and didn't acknowledge me. Just had Island Kine Grinds cater our annual Christmas Party and our guests went crazy on how good the food was! This was most stress free party we have done in years. Very organized, showed up with all the equipment and transferred all the hot food in hot boxes so it was fresh and delicious. This place is the real deal...better than Knack Attack. We were looking for something different for dinner and remembered this place! I always see them starting up the smoker in the mornings when I take my daughter to school. The inside isn't much to write home about, but it was clean and they followed social distancing standards. My husband and I ordered the three meat plate with rice and their macaroni salad. The kalua pig and teriyaki beef were delicious! So moist and flavorful. The chicken wasn't bad either. I just liked the other two meats better! She begrudgingly asked my name and I gave it. She plopped my lunch down and I paid. I asked for my drink to which she said I didn't order one, but proceeded to grab a cup. I thought, "I'm sure I did, but either way, that's nice of her to just let me have it." Nope. She rang it up. Not wanting to run my card again, I declined and went about my way. I got to my car and double checked my order and was missing my extra order of mac. So, I went back in and let her know it was missing. She then printed out my receipt to make sure I paid. Which I had. She then had me go get my food and bring it back in to "prove" it wasn't there. Um...ok? So, I did and I "proved it" and the cook scooped up a little bit more. The chicken was dry. The mac was warm and the extra $2.00 scoop wasn't worth it. I don't normally write reviews like this, but the exceptionally sarcastic "have a nice day" as I was walking out demanded that I do. This review is post remodel. I was excited to hear about the remodel. However the food was remodeled as well. I had the Kalua Pork Sandwich. To be honest, it tasted generic pulled pork. My friend got the chicken, and he said his "mac salad" wasn't very good. After coming back from a trip to Hawaii I was glad to see a more authentic Hawaiian restaurant. Sorry, this place is not the one. I can guarantee anyone from Hawaii that tasted this food would say it is probably the worst food maybe locals there thinks it tastes good because they never had better, your better off going to Mc Donalds next door. 2 stars since the cashier/server was nice. read more
