Alongi's is a locally owned, family business that has been serving yummy Italian for years. It used to be one of my favs, but I hadn't visited in a while because of the hours not working out when I'm in town. We tried it for lunch on a Saturday following a basketball game at the local high school. Park right out front in the street parking spots. They weren't very busy at all. We were seated immediately. Drinks, appetizer, and food all came out quickly. It was all hot and fresh. We all had the lunch special and it was a good size portion of pasta with a salad or soup. Great price for lunch and you definitely won't leave hungry! I would like to note that several reviews speak about teenagers working there. We had a teenage waitress and she was fantastic! I commend Alongi's for allowing the younger workers a place to gain knowledge and skill, while attending school. They may not all have the same work ethic, but that also holds true for adults. The smallest portions I have ever seen. I thought we ordered from the kids menu. Drove over an hour for my birthday dinner. My daughter ordered Tuttu Demate and requested Diavolo sauce. Their version was to add Franks red hot sauce and didn't even bother to stir it in. The pieces of seafood was so tiny they were unidentifiable. I had chicken Marsala which was about a quarter of a breast pounded paper thin. The appetizer was ok but we didn't get plates, probably because they used them for entrees. Ahhh... old school Italian is best when experienced in a small town! We took a little day trip specifically to have lunch for my guy's birthday at Alongi's. About 90 miles from our home, we were in a relaxed Sunday drive state of mind. We arrived to a somewhat sparsely populated dining room. A few families here and there and an older couple in the back chatting with THE Mr. Alongi. It's a comfortable, homey vibe. We started with the sampler platter for an appetizer. Featuring garlic cheese bread, toasted ravioli and breaded mozzarella, it was a simple but tasty start. The garlic cheese bread is the star here. Not too buttery, which can make the bread heavy, it was perfectly prepared and the bread was both crisp and chewy. Texture was completely on point! Our main courses included Pasta Demare for me and Baked Pasta Roma for my other half. I'll start with his dish. The Pasta (ziti noodles) is combined with a slightly sweet marinara that includes some green peppers and pepperoni. Traditionally, this dish comes with mushrooms as well. However, he ordered it sans fungi. I liked the bite the green pepper gave the dish and the pepperoni taste as well. A cheese top was perfectly broiled to allow for complete melting and a slight char around the edges. Divine. My choice included linguine noodles with a butter garlic sauce and crab, shrimp, clams and mushrooms. You can opt to have it served with Alfredo sauce instead and I can see this would add a delicious depth to the dish. I found the dish lacking salt and wished the butter garlic was more saucy to hold onto the noodle better. Hence, another reason I might opt for the Alfredo Sauce. The dish was quite large and had a lot of seafood on the top. However, a reduction of pasta noodles by at least half would make it a better ratio of pasta to seafood. The extra Pasta was useless as it was really too much and created a disproportion. However, I do think the flavor was good. Mr. Alongi was a friend of the late Jack Buck (rumor has it) and by the pictures and memorabilia hanging in the restaurant, this rumor appears to be fact. There's some really neat stuff to look at including a super vintage Cardinals Bobblehead. If you're a Cards fan, you'll enjoy looking. As a Cubs fan, even I could appreciate the items. The food is good. It's not 5-star but it's reasonably priced and consistently solid. A meal you can count on! Add to it the ambiance and old school feel and folks, you've got a winner. read more

Nice spot to grab lunch or dinner in Du Quoin's central area. They tasty lunch specials at really good prices. Their food is definitely Italian American with pastas, pizzas, and calzones. I ordered the calzone lunch special and was quite pleased. A side salad comes out first. You could tell that the calzone was fresh made and the flavors were great. My biggest complaint (and, admittedly, it is not that big of a complaint) is that they don't have a small dessert. All of their desserts sound great but are the type to put you in a food coma and so are not good for lunch. read more

Frozen steak makes this place undesirable! Going into Alongi's, the atmosphere is that of a nice Italian restaurant, and the tables are quite large and private. They have two separate rooms. If you have a chance, get a seat in the room on the east side of the restaurant, as it is more private. The west side looks more like a pizza parlor setting. For my dinner, I ordered the NY Strip steak, which runs at $20. It was early in the dinner service, so I assumed the kitchen hadn't pumped out much food. When my steak arrived at the table, I could immediately tell it was a frozen piece of meat by the the complexion of the steak, which was more gray instead of brown. Upon cutting into the steak, it was really tough. I asked for the steak to be cooked mid-rare. The parts that were red in the center were somewhat cold as well, which is another indication of a frozen steak. When eating the steak, it had the pure waterlogged taste that is synonymous with a frozen steak. I do not remember if there were grill markings on the steak, but it did seem as if the steak was cooked on a flat-top grill, which is also help retain the waterlogged flavor of a frozen steak. There is no doubt that this steak went straight from freezer to grill and was not fresh! The service, while nice, wasn't great. But the meal itself made the visit undesirable. When a place is trying to bill themselves as one of the best restaurants in town and I am served a frozen, not fresh, steak, that doesn't win brownie points. Maybe other menu items are better, but the way the steak was prepared makes me reluctant to try any other food at this establishment. read more

My son thought he had a train ticket last night, but we missed the 4:15 pm train in Carbondale, and tried to catch the same one at the next stop in DuQuoin. Then, after missing the train at the DuQuoin Amtrak station, we realized that he had booked a ticket for next Friday instead, and he could still change his schedule. and use his ticket this morning. Since I went out of my way to drive him to DuQuoin for the train he thought he would take, he offered to buy me dinner at Alongi's. Their vintage ambience is so very charming and their staff greeted me with so much friendly, welcoming cheer. I ordered the pasta dinner with ravioli stuffed with portabella mushrooms, drenched in alfredo sauce, and I loved it. It came with a generous salad, roll and butter and olive oil for dipping. The ravioli really tasted homemade. My son had the eggplant parmesan dinner and it was delicious too. Their marinara sauce on his side dish of penne pasta was really nice with real tomatoes in it. My husband and I were coming back from Carbondale after seeing the eclipse. What should have taken us a 2 hour drive to get back to our hotel in Effingham took us 6.5 hours. After sitting in bumper to bumper traffic we stopped off in Du Quion. We picked this place at random and what a surprise. The restaurant was beautiful with art deco lamps hanging down, ten ceilings, lot a wood and old world charm. The food was fresh, tasty and very HOT!. My husbands lasagna was great tasting along with manicotti, the cheese was very fresh. They gave you a break basket and I also had a potato soup that was nummy for the tummy. The prices were reasonable, bathroom updated and clean. The service was prompt and always refreshed my water. The restaurant was packed for a Monday but I am sure the eclipse traffic had something to do with it. The wait staff seemed to be prepared. read more

The restaurant is conveniently located close to the Amtrak station in Du Quoin, so it was always my first meal back at home when I would take the train down from Chicago. We attend camp in Du Quoin every year. We have found the people to wonderful and the dining to be pleasant. Attempting to frequent the sponsors of my son's camp, we thought we would try Alongi's. As we have come to expect, the service was warm, quick and above average. Now to the food. It's was not only awful, it was very near inedible. My children order from the kids menu. My son did eat his spaghetti, but neither of them would eat my daughters ravioli. I had the Penne Alfredo, which was tasteless. I actually added 3 pats of butter, a ton of salt and half of the parmesan cheese (dried from a shaker) and still couldn't force myself to eat it. My mother ordered the wings and fries, she got 5 wings and a handful of fries. When the waitress took our plates there were still 3 wings and half a handful of fries. That's AFTER the kids eating from her plate since they were very hungry after a vigorous morning of activity. OVERALL, waitress was wonderful and attentive. We almost turned around when we first walked in because of the unpleasant odor. I wish we would have. The food was as bad as the smell indicated. I must conclude my review as we are on our way out the door heading straight for burgers to fill us up before heading back to camp. read more
