I've been here about 6 times in the last year. It sure doesn't look like much from the outside but the dining area is very clean and from what I can see of the kitchen it looks equally as clean. The chicken is absolutely fantastic. It has a very unique flavor due to the Peruvian style rotisserie cooking. The chicken has a nice crispy skin that is flavor packed. The sides are pretty good although I normally get rice and the yuka potatoes. My wife gets the sweet plantains and raves about them. Don't forget to try the spicy green sauce. I tried Mami Nora's the other day with one of my friends who has been talking about their chicken for a couple of weeks now. First off, some of the best food places are found in the most unexpected place. I got half a chicken and 2 sides. The chicken is one of the best chicken I have ever had. The skin was crispy and well-seasoned and the meat was very juicy. As my two sides, I got the rice and french fries which were average. I would most definitely come back to Mami Nora's just for the chicken which is $13 for a whole chicken and $8 for half. read more

I had been wanting to try Mami Nora's for some time, after enjoying many Peruvian chicken meals in the DC area. If I had never tried Peruvian chicken before coming to Mami's I would probably grant it 4 stars, but since I have the DC/MD establishments to compare to it, Mami gets 3. The reasons are as follows. (1) The amount of chicken was on the small side (perhaps they use small chickens? At similar establishments I ordered the same amount - a 1/4 chicken - but I felt like I didn't get much here). (2) The yellow sauce was not actually amarillo sauce but seemed more like yellow-colored mayo. Womp womp. (3) The cole slaw was really average, actually below average even for American cole slaw. Get the house salad or yucca instead. But the chicken was moist, the chi cha was good, the music was fantastic, and the guy behind the counter was really nice. Very good sides! My study partner and I shared the yucca fries and the sweet plantains, both of which were really tasty. But this place is known for its chicken and I have to say I could have done with a little bit more seasoning. Don't get me wrong the chicken was delicious and very tender and moist, but I like to actually have that rotisserie flavor from the skin in each bite; that was not the case here. I will definitely come back, but make sure you know exactly where you are going because this place is in the cut and you can and will drive past it. read more

Chicken is really good!!! I usually don't order chicken when I go out to eat because a lot of places use white meat and white meat is too dry in my opinion. I love fried chicken so I was a bit hesitant to get non-fried chicken at this place, but I was not disappointed! The chicken tastes like authentic peruvian food and it's nicely spiced. Ok, this is really one of the best overall places to eat in town. I love going places where blue collar workers frequent for lunch. The chicken tastes incredible, and I'm hard to please when it comes to chicken. We went to this restaurant because my husband has fond memories of Peruvian food from Gaithersburg, MD and because I absolutely love and crave fried sweet plantains. I had also heard that this restaurant is safe for celiacs. My husband was very disappointed with the chicken as he said it was rather bland. I loved the plantains as usual, but was disappointed with the black beans. I expected the beans to have more body and to be better spiced. I discovered that I don't like yucca fries. They do make fairly good potato fries though. Overall, the prices are far too high for the quality and quantity of food they offer. read more

Wicked good chicken! Love the sides and sauces too. I always get the quarter-white chicken, with sides of rice and black beans. Mix them all together with the cream sauce and green hot sauce, it is an explosion of chicken goodness. I could eat here every day and think I would never get sick of it. Love it! read more

Mami Nora's is the bomb dot com! Their peruvian chicken is done right, both tender and juicy. I always find myself smothering the chicken in both their green and yellow sauce (green one is a little spicy, and yellow one may have mayo in it?) because together it's just so darn good that way. I've gotten their yucca fries, rice and beans, maduros (always get this) and you can't go wrong -- just don't try to fool yourself into eating healthy and get a side salad like I once did, I was looking at my friend's yucca the entire dinner!! read more

Got the quarter chicken, yuca fries and beans and my husband got the fried rice. The chicken was juicy and well seasoned and I loved the yuca fries. The fried rice had a good seasoning to it as well. I would definitely head back when I'm craving some chicken. read more

We were looking for a place to grab a bite to eat on Yelp, and based on the reviews, thought we'd try Alpaca - then we realized they were closing in 20 minutes. I called them 15 minutes before close to place a take out order and they were very accommodating, having our order ready when we got there 10 minutes later. We had the charcoal roasted chicken and the chicken in jerk sauce special, both were delicious and flavorful. The sides that came with hubby's jerk chicken special (black beans & rice and sweet plantains) sounded good, so I got the same with my chicken. We also got the Chaufa fried rice dish based on another Yelper's recommendation, and since his jerk chicken special came with a drink, hubby tried their house made purple corn drink that was seasoned with cinnamon and cloves. He loved the drink - it wasn't quite for me, but I didn't expect it to be, I was happy that he thought it was unusual and delicious. All of our food was WONDERFUL! Both chicken dishes were great, and while black beans and rice is something I usually find bland and not so appealing, theirs was flavorful, rice moist, and I gobbled it all up. The maduros were good enough to compete with some of the best in the area, and the Chaufa fried rice dish was YUMMY! I expected a more latin flavor to it, but it was like the perfect flavor fusion of asian fried rice and latin american food, and was delicious! We also tried their "caramel cookies" which were unlike anything I'd tried before, a large but delicate sandwich cookie with caramel filling, topped in powdered sugar, the cookie texture was unlike anything I'd tried before, I tried to describe it to hubby before he tried his and gave up after finding 'delicate, light, fluffy, almost cakey, but a little crisp on the outside' was still totally inadequate to describe it (he was as surprised and delighted as I was). One thing I should note is Google Maps took us on a weirdly circuitous route (when it could have just taken us Roxboro to Davidson, it's only a block or so up) and it's so tiny and back from the road that it's easy to miss (we drove right by it at first). But don't miss out on their delicious dishes! We'll be back :) After writing this and mentally reliving the meal, I am salivating so much we may be back *today*. read more

This review is about a bad experience that I had with a carryout order. On Friday, I ordered a whole chicken with rice and black beans and the lomo saltado. When I got home and opened the bag, the whole chicken was not included in my order. I called back to the store and told them of their mistake and was told I could come back in and pick up the chicken and they would take the cost of the chicken off of my credit card and leave a note at the cashier. Since I live in North Durham, I told the young lady that I would come in on Saturday on my way back from Southpoint, as it was more convenient then me hopping back in my car the same day. I came in on Saturday and while there was a note left, there was not an indication on whether the charge had been removed from my credit card and she also had not indicated that I would receive something for free because of the mistake. Therefore, my credit card was charged for a whole chicken. The original charge which included the cost for the whole chicken (which I never received) was charged to my card on Monday and another charge for another whole chicken appeared on my account on Tuesday. So, the removal of the charge never happened. Very disappointed in how you don't include the priciest item on my menu in a carryout item. Buyer beware! read more

I ate here for the first time recently and I will be back. The staff was extremely helpful in assisting me to navigate the menu. I had the chicken. It was tender and flavorful. The skin was great: not too spongy and not burnt. For my sides I had the yucca fries and green beans. I ordered takeout. The yucca fries were pretty good when they were hot but they did not survive the 20 minute ride home. They were not enjoyable cold (warming them in the oven didn't help that much). I also had the green beans. Although I could tell they were prepared well, I did not like them. The restaurant was very clean and when I went they had a 100 sanitation grade. I got take out just after 2pm so the restaurant was empty and I virtually had no wait time. I ordered half a chicken with yucca fries and coleslaw and a caramel flan for around 11 bucks which I think is very reasonable. The chicken was AMAZING and.the lover that I am of condiments, was very pleased that it came with 2 dipping sauces. I was nervous about the yucca fries, but another yelper recommended them. As I mentioned, I'm the condiment king, but I really enjoyed these plain. The dining area is very simple but even empty, had a lively feel with upbeat Latin music playing. Mami Nora plays chicken and doesn't back down. The menu is pretty simple- pick your chicken and pick your sides. The rotisserie chicken is moist and delicious but what pushes it over the top are the sauces. The maduros are also the best in town. You're not going to get a lot of choices, and you're gonna have to wait a bit but it's worth it. Tip- if you're a big eater get the half chicken and not just white or dark. read more
