I have never been a fan of sour beers, but this place may have changed my mind! The staff was really helpful with suggestions and I decided to try a couple of sour tasters that they recommended. Just got into town and wanted a microbrewery and first stop was Market Street Brewery. It was on a game day and completely empty. I didn't know if this was a mistake or not but I tried an Oktoberfest and it was fine but the glass tasted dirty and so I started looking for a new spot to go. Then I found Alpha and started walking. It was a good walk but well worth it. They have two different flights a regular flight and then a Beta flight of their barrel aging program. The barrel beers were amazing and especially the Capulous which was a coffee sour. The brewer and owner were great to talk to and it was amazing to taste the high quality of beer coming out of the small brewhouse. I will definitely come back here and make a special trip next time I am in town. Best of luck. read more

Took the review down a star. Beer: good variety but doesn't seem to have a good go-to stand-out fall-back like other area breweries have. Not bad beer by any stretch of the imagination but more meh than memorable, unfortunately. Service: this is a pet peeve of mine- if you're serving these beers, be proud & smart & able to answer questions about the brewing etc! I have yet to see this here. The young girls can answer basic questions w/ canned responses but go blank beyond that. We sat with empty glasses at the bar for uncomfortably long (they were not busy at all) and by the time she reached us, decided to get our check instead of another round. My wife is a Sour beer fanatic... and the Sours at Alpha do not disappoint! We had a beer flight and got to try a few different beers. We loved all but one of them. It's awesome to try so many varieties in sour beer. P.S. The food in the back, Alphateria, was really tasty as well. We tried the Jibarito which was so full of flavor and the Ropa Vieja which was excellent (and I say that as person who's been eating the dish my whole life since I'm Cuban). I was very interested to try a couple breweries here in St. Louis and this one intrigued me so I figured we'd give it a shot. The location was in the back of the building, a decent space with a duo singing and playing instruments as the staff eagerly push the beer menus towards us. They told us we can taste a few before we went with anything so we took them up on it. The blonde and IPA just fell short for me. My fiancée chose a couple others and none worked for her either. Then I rolled the dice on a taster of the Oatmeal Stout. It was a decent beer and much better than any of the four others we tasted. The location could be better and it was a little hidden off of Wash Ave. I had their "flight" of beer which is great to split with another person and helps narrow down what beer in their selection you like. Keep going back and forth with whether my rating should be a 3 or 4 stars, but I think I'm pleased with my 4 star rating. Had a late afternoon meeting this Friday and usually these meetings end up taking us to Schafley or UCBC, but today I suggested we try something new... And of course Yelp lead me to this place. We were the first ones there and the only ones for the first hour or so. Since there weren't many people there I couldn't pick up on the "regulars" or typical atmosphere, however I enjoyed the atmosphere, lighting and vibe that I got while I was there. Staff was super friendly. They have an "alpha" and a "beta" list of beer. Seemed like the alpha list was more regular beers that they reproduce. The beta list sounded like it was more of a sample to see if they wanted to continue brewing them and the majority seemed to be more on the "sour" side... Not really my cup of tea. I tried the typical Alpha 5 beer flight. It was $13 for 5 small tasters. It's always cool to try a variety when you're going to a place for the first time. Unfortunately I wasn't personally a fan of the beers, however they were all very unique and had some interesting flavors, so A for effort. Seemed a bit pricy looking over the menu, but if you're a young brewery I guess you gotta stay afloat some way! A few disappointments or "meh" feelings I got were... Location was a bit difficult to find, as its on the backside of the building. They were out of several "regular" beers. No food available. Small outdoor patio. All in all tho, I think it's a pretty cool hidden spot in St. Louis. Not the best beer in my opinion but cool place. I had a pleasant experience! read more

What a fun new brewery! Everyone here (even the locals) were so nice, and with our groupon, the experience couldn't have been better. They are really into sours (which I am not), but they make a good variety of different styles. The sampler was fun and I'm looking forward to seeing what these guys come up with next. The food was good. The beer was ok. After getting home and checking my email I noticed the bar gave themselves a tip at my expense. Why would I tip when I have to go to the bar and get my own mediocre beer? I called and asked why they added a tip. They said they miss read it. How can you mis-read a zero with a line through it? Had an event at this brewery while I was in town for a conference and I can't say enough great things about the place and the owner/brewer. First, and perhaps most importantly, the beers are excellent. They specialize in barrel aged beers, especially sours, and they know what they are doing and they do it extremely well. Their IPAs were fantastic too. Planning for the event was a breeze, the owner was very responsive and helpful and when we arrived he was friendly and accommodating. My overall experience was excellent and I highly recommend this brewery to anyone who likes beer or who would like to plan a successful event. read more

Alpha Brewing is a great little beer venue, right across the street from the City Museum, and does a great job on sours and funky beers. I was recently in St. Louis with friends for a long weekend, and one place that he said that we had to check out was Alpha Brewing. By reputation, he said that Alpha has a lot of sour and aged beers, and that's right in my wheelhouse. We rolled in midday on a Sunday and had the run of the place. To start, we each ordered a flight of the sours. Clocking in at $15, with another beer as an additional sidecar for $3 more, it was a little pricier than other places, but I also understand that velocity of sour and aged beers means that there is going to be a bit of a premium. Overall, great stuff. I tagged all of the samples in Untappd as I was tasting, and my record shows that everything was a solid 4+ (aside -- for some reason I am fine with giving a place 5-stars on Yelp, but I generally top-out at 4-to 4.5 on beer. Possibly because the rating system on Untappd is more granular, and everything can slide on a scale of quarter points? I really can't put a finger on it). In consideration of the aside, a 4 point beer is high praise in my book, and it means that it is something that I would drink all day, any day. Following the sample flight, a friend and I split a bottle of Capulus, a coffee porter. I am usually averse to coffee beers and pepper beers, because the flavors are delicate and something that is hard to get right. The Capulus actually does it right and gets a coffee flavor that is not overwhelming or stale. As my friend put it, "It's like a cold-brew sour." Overall, Alpha Brewing is on my list of places that I would very much like to visit again when I am in St. Louis. Really good beer, and I would drink more of it. read more

Out of the 3 breweries that I visited during my short 45 hour visit to St. Louis, Alpha is my favorite. Admittedly, my snooty brewer friends said "who?" when I told them about the place, but this is what a brewery should be. Good beer, good atmosphere, fun patrons (it's not every day you get a high five from a stranger), and a bar staff who not only knows what they are talking about but will go above and beyond to explain their product to you and serve it in a way to give you maximum enjoyment. They focus on sours, but if that's not your thing, they have a wide selection of beers (as opposed to being heavily weighted towards IPAs, which STILL seems to be the trend). I had the Revamped Red, American Mild, Pinot Saison, Sunk'n Treasure, and Capulus. Out of those, the American Mild (brown ale with a malty backbone) and the Capulus (a coffee sour) were my faves. I know what you're thinking- a coffee sour? Trust me, it's delicious. So much that I bought two bottles to take home. If you're looking to do a brew tour of St. Louis, definitely put Alpha on your stop, drop, and drink list. read more

Located just off Washington on Lucas at 14th street, this little hidden gem is perfect for sampling local brews. This brewpub or tasting room offers at least 10 varieties of beers ranging from blonde ale to IPA to a dark wheat beer. If you are a beer lover, I recommend trying the sampler of 10 different beers served in 5 ounce glasses. Thankfully I live within walking distance! Food isn't served, but can be brought in or ordered for delivery from the nearby restaurants. This is a nice addition to the downtown scene and well worth checking out. read more

I've been to Alpha twice now and tried most of their beers. Alpha's worth a look, especially if you like hoppy beers, but I'm not convinced it's worth more than that yet. Alpha rotates through styles a lot, so while there's almost always something new to try it can be hard to know what your options are going to be. Hop-heads will be happy, as there are always several well-hopped beers on draft. On my most recent visit they offered a fresh hop IPA, an experimental hop IPA (it smelled exactly like a cantaloupe), and a Mosaic pale ale with a hop profile that put it in APA territory. Non-hop-heads, however, will have a harder time. There are only a few options available for beer beginners - a blonde ale and an American wheat - and both are just okay. People who like dark beer should try the "storter," a combo of stout and a porter. Avoid the milk storter, however - I found it cloyingly sweet. Instead of on-site food, you can order take-out from several nearby restaurants. They keep copies of several take-out menus at the bar, and many of the options are quite good. My main problem with Alpha is that the beer just isn't all that good - and for a brewery, that's a big issue. They lack the "star beer" that draws me to other breweries - nothing like Civil Life's american brown, Perennial's Abraxas, or Urban Chestnut's... everything. I liked some of the beers, but I didn't love any of them, and a few of them I didn't like at all. There's potential here, especially in the hoppy experimental styles, but if Alpha really wants to shine it needs to work on refining it's offerings and getting up to the quality we lucky St. Louisans have come to expect from our microbreweries. read more

ABC made me feel like I was back in New York City. You'd never know it was there standing on Washington Ave - it's directly by Hiro Asian Kitchen (also new!). ABC doesn't serve food, but you can order from Hiro while you drink your craft beers. Cool, hipster microbrewery located in an alley behind an Asian restaurant? You can order food from a different establishment than the one where you are seated? So NYC. It looks like you can bring your own food as well. And pets can come onto the patio - okay this is more like Brooklyn at this point! The beer was stellar. I had the Citra Pale Ale which was really flavorful and light, perfect for a summer night. We sat out on the patio, where the was some great people watching, since it faces parking lots for Cardinals games as well as City Museum. Highly recommended, can't wait to come back . read more

Alpha hides on the back side of Washington near the group entrance to City Museum. Here's hoping that the location weeds out some of the Wash Ave douchebaggery, but only time will tell. During the day the entrance is hidden by large garage doors, but don't be fooled, it's in there. We were greeted right off by the bartender, presented with menus, and asked what we typically drink. Based on our responses we were presented with samples so we could make our picks. The Blonde and Wheat Ales were both tasty and packed a punch after 2... granted I hadn't eaten all day, which is where food would come in really handy here. They have an open food policy, but it'd be nice if there was a small selection of pub fare on hand. The space needs to be lived in a bit. Everything is still shiny and new, and honestly a bit industrial. They're on the right track, they just need to cozy it up a bit. And I agree about the TVs... is STL, you've got to have at least one screen to show games on! read more

Stumbled across this microbrewery off of Wash Ave when my friend and I parked near it on our way to the City Museum. It's main door is off of the alley on the north side of Wash Ave. The atmosphere feels like a converted garage and has a bit of a hipster vibe. The beer though is truly unique and has the best selection of sour beers in St. Louis. I particularly enjoyed their sour IPA. They have 2 taster flights: Alpha and Beta. One nice thing is that they have a set lost of beers that they always have but many more rotating beers. Even nicer, they have a board that shows what is coming up next. Alpha Brewing may be the thing that will drag me back down to Wash Ave a little more often. read more

I have been here twice with friends to try a flight of their beers and have had wonderful experiences on both occasions! I've really liked how their flight includes all of the beers currently on tap. For someone who usually plays it safe when it comes to beer, it was a nice opportunity to taste some brews that I normally wouldn't! The staff is cool and accommodating, there to offer help when you need them and always giving you plenty of time to decide. Additionally, it's just a really cool space! The bar countertop made up of all kinds of international coins is any Pinterest user's dream & they have a nice outdoor patio too. Alpha also has a bring your own food, snacks, etc. policy and they are great about excepting Groupon deals. Alpha is yet another hidden gem in the streets of STL that effortlessly fits into the microbrewery community of St. Louis. Definitely worth visiting! read more

This is my favorite brewery in town and on the short list of STL breweries that I make sure any out of town visitors check out. We come here often with our kids and sit out on the dog friendly patio this time of year. It's open at noon everyday now so this is a great option for lunch as well just having a couple beers. They have live music Thursday nights and live jazz on Sundays as well as many other events. They specialize in barrel aged and sour beers so if your into sours this is the best place in town to get your fix. The Delphian & Apocrypha are two phenomenal sours that are usually always on tap. If that's not your thing they have other great options like Belgian blondes, pale ales, IPAs, Stouts, & more. One of the things I like most about Alpha is the people there. The bartenders are great and knowledgeable about the beers available. If you aren't sure what to order ask one of them for a recommendation or to help you build your own flight. All the beers are available in full pours as well as taster size pours which is a great option when you want to try a few without committing to a full pint. It has a very friendly atmosphere and draws a pretty chill crowd whether you are hanging outside on the patio or sitting at the bar. Chef Eric and the rest of the kitchen staff are super friendly as well & the food is great! The smash burger and fries simply can't be beat. They have a great menu that includes a few really good vegan options as well. There are weekly special menu items that of often paired with one of the beers so there is always something new to try. It's a rare occasion that I don't get something to eat while I'm there. If your in town you definitely need to start frequenting Alpha. If your just visiting STL put this on your list of places to come try while your in town to experience some of the best that St. Louis has to offer. read more

Wash Ave's hidden gem is definitely Alpha Brewing Company. Hidden behind the strip is 12 beers on tap, bar, table, and patio seating, and a bring or order your own food policy. These things make me happy. Their full beer sampler was perfect for sharing and was well priced (I think $15) and my favorites were the Scotch Ale, Imperial Red, and Imperial Storter to name a few. They seem to rotate their selections quite often which makes me excited to come back and try something new. The service was great, atmosphere was laid back, and no large crowds. The perfect place to just sit and drink good beer either alone or with a few buds. No judging or usual Wash Ave drama here. I will be back for another round real soon. read more
