Once upon a time, there was a Beloved Jacket that served its mistress well. It, some black leather jeans and sunglasses, there was no place she couldn't go. Alas, the lady was called away to tend to an ailing relative. Three long years passed before she was able to return to her home and when she got there, she discovered the Jacket was in ruins. Next, she sent it to a tailor in Vietnam but the jacket she got back didn't fit. Finally, she tried a guy on the LES and that guy sent her to Miguel who MIRACULOUSLY created AN EXACT REPLICA of the Beloved Jacket down to the transfer of the original label and buttons. He lost money on the deal but wanted to be the happy ending to her epic quest. "You look like you make a lot of money." That's what a friend told me when I recently met up with them after an interview, wearing a suit tailored at Alpha Tailor Shop. While I don't make a lot of money (yet), I sure look like I do. That said, this review is long overdue, as I've been a patron for roughly 5 years as of this writing. I've had a variety of work done here (both simple and complex), all of which is reasonably priced. This shop has a fairly quick turn around. For example, during wedding season it was about two weeks (note that these weren't extensive alterations). Depending on the complexity of the alterations, it may take more time. Whenever this is the case, it's communicated. Here's a general overview of the shop (I borrowed the format from another review : ) Skill: As noted above, they can handle complicated and easy alterations with equal skill. I also receive a ton of compliments on his work (like the one above). Shop Energy: Good vibes. I'm usually laughing and feel comfortable in the shop. Communication: Miguel is straight-forward and (as noted above) will let you know if an alteration can be rushed or if he will need more time. I trust his recommendations! He's honest about whether something is worth tailoring or whether an alteration will be flattering (or not). That said, please make sure to communicate what you want! I've made some mistakes and have forgotten to do -- so this is important as well. Pricing: Fair prices. He is also extremely transparent about why something might be more expensive. As another reviewer noted, he shows special love for repeat customers and bulk jobs. Cleanliness: The shop is clean and spacious. The mirrors in the fitting room are large as well and have good lighting. The bathroom is also clean and there's no funky smell(s). Educational: This ties in with communication, as he will let you know if an item is a quick and/or cheap alteration. On the other hand, he explains when an alteration is complex and will require more work, cost, time. Pro tip: I'm a stickler for details. I've been to other tailors in the past and have been burned and Miguel has fixed some of their mistakes. That said, I've been coming to him for roughly 5 years now and he's the only tailor I trust to alter suits. read more

Why? - The quality of the work is as high as it gets. - The price-point for the work is as good as it gets. If you'd have to choose between a girl and a tailor (never mind silly question), which would it be? In both cases, you end up spending a lot of time and money, there's some love and hate in between, you break up or stick together for a long long time. I think the one with Miguel might easily outlive someone's relationship. It took me quite a while to write this review; mostly because I was busy working but partly I wanted to give a test of time to his works. As Miguel said, some type of suit takes 10~15 days to set into the fit, and you will be able to tell what. So far within last 2 months, I have given him 3 works; - Band of Outsider wool jacket (charged $100 for multiple alteration) - APC jacket sleeve hem ($25) - a couple of designer trousers hem ($7 each) - a woman friend's robe ($40) All done well and each took about a week or two. To me, being able to communicate is the most important thing for any business. From business perspectives, it should not be easy to read customer's style and many tailors for that reason try to only deliver what has been ordered. I wandered past Alpha Tailor on my way to another tailor shop and just thought, why not try a new place? The other shop I was headed to is usually pretty busy, and I wasn't sure if there would be a wait. I am so glad I stepped in here and met Miguel. I had a few clothing items that needed work, from the simple (a dress and blazer that needed buttons sewn) to the more complicated (a beaded dress that I'd bought at a sample sale that needed some delicate beadwork to fix). I'd already emailed a different shop a week ago and been told they wouldn't handle the beaded dress. But Miguel said he would take it on. He told me the shop had just opened a week earlier, so he had some time and would try to play around with the beadwork and see if he could fix it. If he couldn't, he promised, he wouldn't do anything. We never set a price. I picked the dress up three days later, and it was practically good as new. He did a beautiful job and charged a very reasonable price for what must have taken him a lot of time! I'm definitely going to go back to him, and would love to see him do well with his new business. Miguel took great care of me. My suit needed some tricky alterations. I needed the shoulders smoothed out and made more natural and some material removed from the back and neck area. I'm a traveling tailor in the menswear industry. Been in this business for more than 5 years traveling around the country doing bespoke Italian suiting. I've tested and tried so many alteration tailors in these past years who were knowledgeable and artisanal enough to gain my trust and touch my garments that range from $2500-$8000. I was introduced to Miguel 3 years and it was magic . Honestly the work and attention he gives my garments are bar none incredible. NO ONE would even bother to work with me because it's not worth their time. I stumbled into this tailor as I walked back home once after trying to go to another tailor and it being closed. I decided to give Alpha Tailor Shop a chance. As I walked in I was greeted by Miguel who was very nice. I had one suit that needed work and 2 pairs of pants that needed tapering. I told Miguel what I wanted to be done and he proceeded to pin up my items. He gave me suggestions and did not feel like he was pushing me to get services that I did not need. When I picked up my items they were completely transformed and fit amazingly well. After that time I've gone once more to get some work done on another suit and some loose fitting shirts. The results were consistent and I left very happy with the alterations. I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to get professional and high quality work done at a reasonable price. I came here a few months ago to get my suit altered. He screwed my pants big time. Not only are they too tight for me to even tuck in my shirt, but the pant-lines going down both the left and right sides are crooked now. The pockets also budge out and the back pocket has a rip in it. Not sure if I pissed him off or something or rubbed him the wrong way when I went in initially, but it's pretty unfortunate that I can't even wear the suit anymore. I recently purchased a beautiful blue "Point Zero" jacket which I like very much - it only recently got cold enough to use the hood, so I did and found that it completely covered my face and prevented me from seeing ahead. In despair, I called upon once again the services of Alpha Tailor Shop. I only expected a quick 'zip' with the sewing machine to make it smaller, but Miguel listened attentively to my needs and approached it completely differently. He pinned it up, took out some of the internal components, did a few other things that were to complicated for me to reiterate, and low and behold it was actually better than what I could have expected, and that is no exaggeration. Miguel is fantastic, extremely professional and a very talented tailor. I was the maid of honor in my best friend's wedding and needed a great tailor to hem and take in my gown. I tried to get into Stanton Tailor Shop, but they were so busy that it would have taken a minimum of three weeks to do my dress. With the wedding three weeks away, this wasn't an option. I passed by Alpha Tailor on my way home and decided to check the Yelp reviews. There weren't many but everyone had given Alpha 5 stars. So, I went in. Not only did Miguel get the dress done in a week and a half, he did such a beautiful job and provided wonderful customer service. My dress was ready a couple of days earlier than he'd originally anticipated, so he called me and told me I could come pick it up whenever. He even offered to stay at the shop a little later in case I couldn't get there in time after work. When I did pick up the dress, it fit perfectly. Miguel told me if I needed anything else before the wedding I could call him and come in anytime. This wasn't necessary because he did an amazing job the first time. Miguel admits Alpha isn't the cheapest option around, but he takes pride in his work and promises the quality is better. And I definitely agree. A truly terrible experience. The short of it is that Alpha was unable to get a suit to sit right on me; in fact the work done seems to have made it worse. When I came to pick it up, Miguel first told me there was no problem, and then that problem was not with the work but with me and the shape of my body. I responded by asking if there is anything that could be done or if this was a lost cause. Eventually he yelled at me about how I just wanted the work for free and how nothing would satisfy me. He then charged me only for a slight tapering of the jacket sleeves and the pant legs. The full story is as follows. I brought in the suit on a Wednesday or a Thursday, and one of the shop employees looked at it on me and pinned the pants and jacket. The employee said it would be done by next Tuesday (a very fast turnaround time). After I left, I got a call from Miguel asking that I come back in so he could see the jacket on me and make sure tailoring it wouldn't be in vain. So I did. He looked at the suit on me, stated that the work was doable, and then I went on my way. I went back on Tuesday and tried on the suit. The main issue was that the jacket, now more tapered to my waist, pulled on one side. It wasn't tight; it just pulled. I asked about that, and Miguel told me that any jacket tailored to the wearer would do that. I assured him I owned garments tailored to my body that did not pull. He then told me the cause might be that I had my cell phone in the pant pocket on the side with the pull. I took the phone out of my pocket, and of course it still pulled. At this point, Miguel said the problem was that one of my shoulders is lopsided, so the problem isn't with the work he did on the jacket, but with how I stand and how my body is shaped. He further extolled how he can't fix the way people are shaped or how they stand. I replied by asking if anything could be done to make the jacket fit me, accounting for whatever is unique about my body (i.e. the very reason why someone brings a garment to a tailor). Miguel suggested extra padding at the shoulder. So he put in the padding, but the pad was quite visible through the jacket. First, the shoulders of the jacket now had noticeably different shapes from one another. Second, the outline of the padding was visible through the jacket! And the one-sided pull was only slightly reduced. Miguel denied the padding was visible and told me I was just being difficult. He then, for the first time, claimed that the jacket was just too long, so slight pulls and creases were inevitable. Keep in mind that Miguel saw the jacket on me before agreeing to do the work. When he called me back in to see how the jacket fit, I thought this spoke very well of him. With that said, he clearly misjudged what he could do. If he didn't think he could tailor the jacket properly, he shouldn't have taken the job. Alternatively, if the jacket needed more work than he first thought and something could have been done, he could've said so and told me it would be a bigger job. I would have paid more to have the job done right. That would've been fine. Instead, Miguel started yelling, as mentioned above, and removed his added padding and largely undid the work of taking the jacket in, as in his estimations his alterations had made things worse. When he finished the work (keep in mind I was in the shop throughout all of these alterations), he said the tailoring had caused the pull and that he didn't want me to have something not to my satisfaction. He charged me only for the tapering of the arms and the legs, not for the other work on the jacket. I think this whole process took about an hour. First, I would advise anyone I know who requires a careful tailoring job to take their business somewhere else. Perhaps the job was undoable owing to how the suit was made and my body shape. If that is the case, Miguel should have said this when he saw the jacket on me, rather than trying to tell me that some creasing and pulling is normal. Second, the experience was exceptionally unpleasant. No one goes to a business to be yelled at. Moreover, no one wants to hear "the problem is your body." I'm a slim man, so I was not offended the way others might be, but I can imagine those words traumatizing plenty of people. Tailoring is supposed to make a garment work for the wearer. Not all garments can be made to work for all wearers. But if the tailor comes to believe he cannot do a good job, he should say so. If he realizes after alterations that he was wrong to take the job, he should say so. He should not try to say that obvious problems look fine and are normal. read more

Distressed, luxuriously soft linen trousers were a perfect fit, yet tore at the seat. So, I purchased a larger pair and they tore in the same place. Miguel said it wasn't the fit, rather the over-treated distressed linen.... Miguel sutured the seats with artistic thread work, not only salvaging pricey pants I thought I would have to trash, but he created an even more fashionable looking design. It was a small hole in a sweater that disappeared when he was finished with it! I live around the corner from this shop, which opened just a few weeks ago. After completing my yearly closet purge, I realized I had a few items that needed some work and thought I would give Alpha Tailor a try. I needed four items altered- a chambray shirt, sequined pants and a long draped jersey skirt that all needed to be taken in as well as a leather jacket. Miguel checked out each item, gave me his suggestions and ideas for how to adjust each one and quoted me a really great price for everything together. The shirt, pants and skirt were ready within two days and the work was done perfectly. When I came in to pick them up, Miguel had me try on the jacket again, made some final adjustments and told me to come back in another two days. He turned a vintage leather motorcycle jacket with oddly fitting sleeves into a really awesome vest for me within a week! He said he had a special sewing machine especially made for leather which means I'll definitely go back there any time I need work done to leather jackets, belts, or whatever.
