Alpine Butcher is the best. Family owned since 1913... and you feel like family when you are in there. Alpine is conveniently located right off the highway near Tavern in the Square and the Lowell Cinema... it's hard to drive by once you've been in there. I've lived in Boston for the last 8 years but I've made an effort to drive back to Lowell to go to Alpine when I want meat. I go in there a lot and I even notice customers going in for their first time are treated very well. One thing I notice is you never just see someone aimlessly standing around, I think within 2 minutes of being in there, one of the employees will greet that person! "Hi! How's everything, anything particular you're in for or I can help you with?" Very consultative and helpful. They have the best steak I've ever tasted. The only challenge is that it's so good, that when I go to a steak house, sometimes I find myself dissatisfied or I'll just order the chicken. I typically will get the marinated steak tips at Alpine. I personally love the steakhouse and the maple bacon ale. I grab those anytime I'm invited to a barbeque and I'm trying to make a good impression. I always have the host ask me where those game from? All the marinated chicken is great as well. I'll typically get the sirloins, 12 oz, burgers, and they also have Japanese Waghu that is really good! What ever your looking for they most likely have it or call in first. I also like the variety of extra stuff they have in there. All the products are very unique for example the unique spices they have like Tacticalories Seasoning and IPA's like Lunch from Maine Beer Co. I also like the stuff Alpine makes on their own like "The Rub" ... and the buffalo dip!! Buffalo dip is hard to walk by on a football Sunday. They have everything in their you need to make a nice steak dinner. They also do shipping now which I'm very thankful for! All I can say is this place is AMAZING. I have been a customer for about 5 years now and have never been let down. The staff is incredible; everyone is super nice and genuinely seem to enjoy their jobs. I would attribute that to great owners. This place is extremely high quality but at extremely high prices. Delmonico steaks at $27.99 lb and steak tips at $18.99 lb will make you scoff and walk out the door. I've had their cuts of meet which are really good. Just know you're paying a premium price. My preferred J&B butcher in Tewksbury offers steak tips at $13.99 lb and Delmonico's at $16.99 lb and I taste no difference in quality. If money's no object to you go to Alpine Butcher. read more

Way over priced in my opinion. My wife and I used to shop here occasionally way back when they first opened and always liked it. Recently moved back to the area and we were excited to pick out dinner there tonight. My jaw dropped when I saw the price for a small pack of steak tips. Over $50.00! I was hopeful that for that price I would be eating some incredibly tender and high end beef. Unfortunately, we were both quite dissatisfied with the quality. Would give negative stars if I could. Purchased $138 of brisket that had to go in the garbage. I understand that times are still difficult for small businesses, but there is no excuse for selling customers meat that is starting to spoil, and covered in so much fat (I trimmed 2.7lbs of fat off at home) that ultimately resulted in having to throw both pieces of brisket out. The person who went to the basement to prepare and package the meat purposely arranged and wrapped the meat in such a way as to disguise the odor and all of the fat that needed to be trimmed. Love this place. Wednesday's they get their fish freshly delivered. Their salmon and scallops are amazing. Also delicious Arctic char when they have it. Sunday's they freeze pack the fish and you can get it slightly discounted. Their chicken wings, marinated meats, cuts of beef.... everything I've had is delicious and well worth the price. You get what you pay for. You will pay more than you would at a grocery store, but the quality is unmatched. I have shopped at Alpine for three separate occasions and have been blown away by the quality of the product every time. For Father's Day, I decided splurge and picked up some steaks for myself, my father and my father in-law. I had never gone to a butcher shop before but came away very impressed with the customer service and the quality of the meat. The quality of the product was so good I decided to use Alpine for a sandwich platter for my daughter's baptism and once again left very impressed by the helpful staff that took my order and assembled the sandwiches. The quality of the meat is far superior to anything you would get at a grocery store, and you are supporting a local family owned business at the same time. I had never received compliments on a sandwich platter before, but received several that day, and used them again when for my daughter's first birthday party. Ok, so I posted the poor review below and the next day I'm contacted by someone from Alpine who refunded my money and offered me another round of steaks to try. The second batch was amazing. I'm not just saying that because the merchant stepped up, they really were super. I cooked all 4 this time in our wood fired oven which does an amazing jobs on steaks due to how the heat hits from all sides. I'll add a photo to the site. I think the lesson here is that Prime is just a higher probability of having a good experience, not a guarantee. Oh, and also that customer service can make a big difference! steve 1st review I was pretty excited when I checked this place out because they have a lot of Prime cut beef and that's relatively hard to find. So for my first purchase I picked up 4 Rib Eye steaks for $85. They looked great, but they were just OK and not near what I expect from this price point. I cooked one sous vide then seared and the other three over a wood fire. Both of these ways have worked exceptionally well for me in the past. In this case the steaks had a tough gristle line down them but even with that cut away the meat was not what I expect from Prime. Not "cuts like butter" for sure. I can get prime steaks at Costco for about the same price that are much much better. Maybe I just got a bad batch of 4 but I doubt I will try again. I do not give out five stars easily, so since I did with Alpine Butcher (AP), you know this has to be the best. It is, speaking from the deli/takeout side of the business. I can't comment much on the meat and fish offerings. Co-workers raved about this place so I had to try it. You can call ahead which is great because when it's busy, you can wait in line for a bit. The building is not far from work which is perfect. Located just over the Lowell/Chelmsford line, the parking lot is small, but there's always space available to park. The unassuming front facade with two glass doors opens up into a brightly lit, very clean, well-organized layout which is pretty much a square so finding what you need/want is very easy. My go-to selection is the Southwestern Wrap in a spinach tortilla: Grilled chicken with mixed greens, tomatoes, red onions, shredded cheddar cheese, crispy bacon drizzled with a chipolte ranch dressing. It is one of the best wraps I have ever had. Portions are perfect and while the wrap is stuffed, it doesn't fall apart. The ingredients are well-balanced and when take that first bite, you get an amazing taste of each ingredient including the chipolte dressing. The dressing has a nice mild kick to it and doesn't linger. I have also had their "Loaded Italian" which per the menu: Ham, salami, mortadella, provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, roasted red peppers, a chipotle spread all on a nicely crusty solio bread. This too is balanced nicely and while seems overwhelming in terms of possibly being "overloaded", it's actually not. Everything works well here and the chipole spread is a welcomed departure from oil and vinegar and/or mayonnaise. The bread can be a bit too crusty for some on first bite, so be cautious. Others may delight in the fact it is a hearty, crusty bread on the outside. All sandwiches come with a side: cole slaw, potato chips (they even offer a national brand and local one. Classy!), whole fruit, or potato salad. Now, I have heard and read about how you "have" to take a side with your sandwich or wrap. You don't *have* to take a side, but if you do, you can always pawn it off onto someone if you want. Pricing. Yes, it can be a sticker shock, but you know the old saying, "You get what you pay for"? AP is a poster child for that saying. Both the Southwestern Wrap and Loaded Italian (an everything else they offer) are made from quality, fresh ingredients; there is no mistaking it. From the bread, to the meat, to the veggies, to even how neatly your order is wrapped in foil, when you unbox your order, you instantly can tell this is not some mass-produced, chain-style offering. When you taste the food, that's when you realize and appreciate the asking price. The staff also needs to be mentioned here too. From the initial call-in to place an order to pick it up, and paying, everyone is genuinely friendly and pleasant. It's not like other places where you feel like they are doing you the favor when you walk in. I have watched the staff sweep the floor, take/process orders, answer questions, wipe down the front doors, and replenish stock on shelves all with efficiency and, I think, pride. I never feel like they hate their job or are just there for a paycheck. Alpine Butcher is a great little gem when you want a solid, quality sandwich for lunch. While pricing may offend some, the quality and service can not be beat, which makes the cost well-worth it. read more

I love this place! Ironically, I'm a vegetarian - but their whole store has some great things to buy. All the groceries are higher end quality, and I can never decide which to try next. Even though I don't eat meat - I do however, purchase marrow bones (and beef) for my dogs; which are priced cheaper than Meat Again in Billerica. They also store them fresh and not frozen (Meat Again freezes them and put them in a bin for purchasing). The staff is so nice! Everytime I get marrow bones, they ask how big the dog is, and ask if I'd like them to cut it in half - shows they really care, and go the extra mile (even though it's just for a dog). Alpine Butcher makes really good sandwiches and wraps because they are a deli first and foremost. Their choice of meats to put in their food is the way every sandwich shop should operate! The one thing I was disappointed with was that on weekends they do not have the large assortment of sandwiches and wraps available. I did notice that some of their groceries do have very competitive prices compared to their large competitors! Look well and you'll find some great deals!!! Everyone here is super friendly and super fast making your sandwich..so if you're going on lunch..no worries. I stopped by on my way home for a sandwich and a chef salad. I use to like Alpine Butcher. Unfortunately their prices have gone through the roof and service has gone down hill. We ordered a "prime grade" standing rib roast for Christmas. When we went to pick it up they gave us a "choice grade" standing rib roast. Being two days before Christmas I didn't want to make a big deal about it. The price however was through the roof. $120+ for an 8lb choice grade standing rib roast. Never again! Costco and MarketBasket offer choice grade at significantly lower prices. read more

Fresh turkey sandwiches! I hardly come across super fresh turkey, but this place definitely serves a lot of it. I ordered their standard turkey breast sandwich and it's quite tasty! There's really nothing spectacular in the sandwich, but something about it gives it the right kick. For $6.29, you can get a sandwich with either a side of cole slaw or a bag of chips. Everything I have tried here has been outstanding. They make their own lunch meat, sausage, and smoked meats in house. While they are expensive, they are absolutely worth the price. If you're looking for anything out of the ordinary, talk to the butchers and they will hook you up. They will chop your stew meat, butterfly chicken breasts, and they even sell bones for dogs. The fish comes in fresh 3 times a week from Boston and is stellar. The customer service is outstanding and efficient. The shop also has specialty sauces and products from New England. It's cool to be able to get high quality local ingredients. The sandwiches and wraps are delicious. Try the Spicy Boom Boom Roast beef wrap. It is awesome!! read more

They will cut your meats/ chicken any way you ask. Also, if you want a certain fish, call them the day before, and they will have it ready for you. This review is solely for the Cuban panini sandwich I got today. Worst Cuban ever. The flavor was weak and the construction was a mess. They cut open a ciabatta- like roll and flipped it inside out.!?! And built the sandwich on that. There was thin slices pork that were fine. But it was barely grilled and very soggy and runny. Two times in a row they messed up my husband's buffalo chicken wrap. He hates blue cheese and specifically asks for ranch instead. I'm not sure what is so hard about this but it is disappointing. Really good quality but also overpriced at least on the deli side. Their classic sandwiches are $9.00. They come with a small bag of chips but there is no option to just get a sandwich. On the plus side the turkey is fresh roasted in house. The meats are great on the butcher side, and they are always willing to take special requests. If you get at least 2-3 pounds they will do up some pulled pork overnight for you! Pretty good value too at about $6 per pound.
