Stopped by for lunch and was impressed with the food and service. I was somehow unaware that they focus on German fare, so was a bit unprepared for the seeming lack of lunch selection. It's mostly sausage and meats, meats and sausages, hearty rolls and pretzel buns and rye bread etc. I got a Reuben and it was fucking delightful. Shits was piled high with meat and featured a massive wad of house-made (assuming) sauerkraut. Excellent bread and cheese. Soft. Bread was not really toasted all that long and I devoured the thing. Cost $12 for a whole sandwich with no sides. I shouldn't be crying about this but yet I am a little bit. Throw a few kettle chips my way and make it feel like a meal eh? A few carrot sticks? Something. Anything. I can't afford to eat like this for lunch. My co-worker got a sausage roll and it was just that. A couple smallish sausages with hot mustard on a white roll. Looked and tasted great but I know he must've walked out hungry. $8. Cup of soup is $6. I'm complaining a lot about prices. It's not their fault. They make from scratch and Spokane City has em' bent over with taxes and fees at every turn I'm sure. Service was really friendly and they were knowledgeable. I don't even want to give these people one star but I have to. I walked into Alpine and was ignored for a while by the owner at the cash register until she asked to help me. I told her that I'm just looking at the menu (written on a board above the Deli) as I was considering getting a sandwich. She told me to stand elsewhere because one couple was waiting behind me. Mind you, I was there first, and I can't see very well unless I get close to the counter. I want to believe the best in people and just assume they want to put their regular customers first. I heard her complain to a customer that she might sell her business, and she doesn't really care what happens. My son and I grabbed lunch here because we were tired of our usual lunch places. What a great decision! The food is very authentic German. The rolls and breads are what you would get in Germany, Switzerland or Austria. The sandwiches are fresh. There are imported soft drinks and German fruit teas. The coffee is so smooth you can drink it black. So much better than Starbucks. They also sell sausages and cheeses and meats, chocolates and candies and cookies. There are a few tables with table cloths. It's down to Earth, unpretentious, and simple - but don't let that fool you. The food is really yummy. This is good home cooking. Usually the only home cooking I get is when I make it myself, and I'm tired of my own cooking, so eating here was a real treat. My son loved it too. read more

The Reuben sandwich and potato salad I ordered were very good. The service was extremely slow with 4 people working but very uncoordinated in actually serving their clients. Seemed like it all fell onto one counter person who was a bit too chatty given the line that was waiting. I had a laugh about their sign of absolutely cutting no bread before 2 PM. Really? Just got the feeling that the owner is quite inflexible - an overall negative vibe. With all the great places that Spokane now offers, I'm not sure that I'll return here anytime soon! read more

What a pleasant surprise! This place is very similar to a quaint little shop-of-all-foodstuffs-German that you'd expect to find somewhere like Leavenworth (*cough*cheesemonger*cough*) but without the exterior Bavarian posturing. All manner of cured German meaty goodness can be found here: Land Jaegers? check (dozens of) Wursts? check "scary" meats like headcheese? check They have the widest selection of German beers in Spokane hands down. If there is a German beer imported into the state of Washington, you can probably find it here. They even have multiple kinds of Rauchbier! (if you have to ask, I'd recommend you don't blind buy these). And the deli portion: they have all manner of sandwiches and meat/cheese platters here. My friend got the "Putz" which is a roast beef sand which with cheese and horseradish, it was absolutely stunning. I got a wurst plate, which had a little bit of everything (I had no idea what I was eating 3/4 of the time, but that didn't stopped me from wolfing it down). The only downside? I went in to this place quite awhile ago but am just now leaving a review. I was in there having a sandwich and noticed these two ladies come in and sit down, 50s? 60s? I am not sure. Professional looking. Now mind you the place was empty except me, plenty of tables, no one waiting for a table. Pretty dead until these ladies walked in. The owner\employee? came over and said can I help you? The two ladies said that they were getting settled and will order in a bit. While the two ladies continued greeting, talking and starting to go over what appeared to be some paperwork, the owner\employee approached again asking if they were ready to order. The one lady, a redhead, said she 'spaced' and hadn't even looked at the menu yet. Very nice, apologetic. The owner\employee seemed a little miffed and disgruntled, walked away. As the ladies looked over their menus and kept talking, the owner\employee came back up, really gruff. "You have to leave! This isn't a public office, you can't just come here and not eat!" Both ladies, were shocked and said, "We are ready, we were just waiting to give you our order." The employee again, angrily said, "No, leave, now!" I was absolutely SHOCKED to see two professional 50-60 year old ladies being kicked out of a restaurant like this. They were not some young street thugs, homeless, whatever, they clearly had money and wanted to visit\conduct business over a nice meal. From what I gathered, they might have been real estate agents talking about houses, or something? Not sure really. But after I witnessed what I witnessed, I got up and told the owner that was extremely rude and she shouldn't have done that... then she started half yelling at me, "This is my place, I can do what I want! This isn't a freeloading zone!!!" I have never been back since and I won't. Part of the experience of eating out, getting coffee, is enjoying the company you are visiting or meeting with. Not rushing cattle through a gate and wolf down a bunch of food. We are not supposed to say never. But I will NEVER go to this place again. Rude. read more

We started eating here years ago; this place taught me to love Rueben sandwiches. Now there's new staff, less shelving for European treats and partially empty cases. But, the Rueben is still exemplary - and now it can be wrapped in lettuce. So I was happy. Staff is still figuring out how to always say yes to the customer, (Yes, it will be 10 minutes - not: choose something else.) And I'm told they have 'changed' the potato salad to be not as authentic- it still tasted good to me. But the bread and meat and cheese is still freshly sliced. This is such a great little place. I love the roast beef sandwich (I forget the name) ...it is so good! Homemade soup is always good. There is cheese, meat, sausage...so many good deli items to purchase and take home. Then there is the little "grocery" with German deli items from cookies, to chips, pickles to pasta. So fun. The staff is super nice and helpful. They also have some good "pastry items". The last time we visited we tasted the homemade pretzels for the first time. They were really good. The ladies behind the counter are so sweet, they give off that favorite grandmother vibe. Seating is kind of limited but nice and open so you aren't right on top of people. They also have great weekly specials for lunch. Had the chicken goulash over rice once and that was full of all kinds of great flavors. Visited Alpine Deli on the perfect rainy day! The atmosphere is cozy and the staff is very friendly. There is a plethora of German Dry Goods in addition to a standard German Delicatessen. They offer a well-rounded menu with platters, lunch specials, sandwiches, samplers and desserts! I had the Wurstteller. Which is a sampler of different types of meats with cheese bread mayo and mustard. A slice of Bienenstich, German bee sting cake, was perfect. A layered cake with cream filling and topped with perfectly toasted almonds (not overly sweet). I would highly recommend this restaurant. Just be aware that their seating is very limited. If you go during peak hours space may be limited, so go with some time or be prepared to take away. read more

What a find! We were looking for a soup and sandwich restaurant and Tammy spotted this on Google. The service was good, the prices are affordable, and the food is delicious. Tammy had the lunch special - sauerbraten. I had knackwurst and lentil soup. It was under $20. The portions were substantial but even so, we could not resist having a dessert. I had a triple chocolate cake and she had apple strudel. I could make a meal out of the desserts. Needless to say, to paraphrase the Terminator, "We'll be back." read more

Love doesn't even describe my fondness for this place! It's different and a bit kitschy and reminiscent of the past, nostalgic. There are die-hard regulars who keep this place going and Spokane should be thankful for them as it is becoming much more difficult to find options in Spokane that are not homogenized versions of each other. The Alpine Deli has been under new ownership for awhile now, after visiting a few times I thought I should update my review. I've been in the Deli 3 times since the change in ownership, so I believe I've given it a fair shot. First, I always LOVED going here for all my european treats - my husband is swiss, and we both lived in germany so it was wonderful having a place to get some of our favorite staples. The new owners have chosen not to carry all those items - a few, but most of that awesome germanwonderfulness is gone. The deli case was also a rare gem in Spokane - now, a fraction of the selection, and the items look dry on the ends - didn't look very fresh. Where at one time I enthusiastically recommended this place to ANYONE who might want european treats, I don't think that's the case now. The new owners are doing what new owners do- taking it in a new direction, and making the store theirs - unfortunately, its not one I'll be shopping at again. read more

Craving some German grub, I found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a shot for lunch. Not that I had much choice, the only other option in town has a Spanish name and a reputation for serving dishes resembling dog food. Note that while a previous poster mentioned they're open until 5:00 p.m. or so, they stop serving hot lunches at 2:00. I rolled in just past this time and didn't want to be a bother, but they still happily sliced some German lunch meats and cheese that were served with two small hoagie rolls, spicy mustard and mayonnaise. I can't say I was impressed with the dish. The meats basically tasted like baloney to me and the cheese wasn't anything special. However, I am betting that the sausages and hot dishes are well worth the trip. So until the time when I get to try one, I'm keeping it at 3 stars. It is worth mentioning that the amount of imported German goods is bordering the ludicrous. The selection of German beers is astounding; and that of the chocolate is mouth-watering. My first time in Spokane, Washington. I wanted to try an Old World Deli flavor and came across this very unassuming place full of charm and good old family hospitality. Turned out that these nice folks are the new owners of the Deli since January 2014 from the former owners who I understand were an elderly German couple They are impressively well groomed in both German and Bosnian Delicatessen cuisines. The cakes are deliciously home-made, offering lunch specials that are easy on the pocket. Plus, these folks roll in with lots of their family history which makes you feel that you are part of the family. Now, that's what I call an "Old World" Delicatessen. OMG what a wonderful little place this is. I went there for my first time today. There was 3 of us and let me tell you we that none of us where disappointed. I have been in Spokane for 8 years now and this is the best place I have eating at since I have been here. I had the beef goulash soup and it was so fresh and so homemade tasting it blew me away. It had big junks of beef in that where so tender. I also had the Putz a half of one and it too was sooo good. Love that it even had grilled onions on it. The two men I was with had Rubens and they were so happy they decided to go with it. The rye bread was good fresh rye. Not all dried out like a lot of dark rye you get and even the side of cabbage one of them had was so good. I am so going back again to try some of their other menu items. They have a different lunch special every day and I am looking forward to going when they have the cabbage rolls! We were too stuffed to try any one of the many desert items available but one day I am going to take a baklava home with me just because I can. What I really liked most is how it's just a little tiny place inside a specialty store with a deli case that has a wide selection as well as grocery items you are not going to find just anywhere. First time in today, but you can tell the place is popular, it was BUSY! I par used the isles to check out all things German before making my way to the deli counter to check out their massive selection of meats and cheeses. Impressive meats with names I can't pronounce! I made my way to the cash register where they had the specials listed. Today's special was sauerbraten with knodel and rotkraut. Let me say that I am not an expert on German foods, but have always enjoyed trying foods from all around the world. The rotkraut, or red cabbage was tangy and sweet but not overpowering on any level, all in all a great dish. The knodel, kind of like a potato dumpling. This was a nice little surprise. Again have never had it before but it was quite delicious! Now for the disappointing part. The reason this review didn't get 5 stars is the sauerbraten was dry, overcooked, and the gravy tasted like something from a can. I will be back, I want to try some of the amazing sausage that everyone is talking about! Addition: after eating here several times for lunch, I can tell you that the food isn't all that great. I will never return to this place. I was meeting a colleague here for a quick meeting with the plan to place an order before leaving. The owner of the establishment approached us after about 20 minutes and stated she didn't know what we were meeting about but that we were making her very nervous. I explained we were meeting about real estate. She then said we were basically sitting in her living room and she didn't like it. She was incredibly rude which was unfortunate because she lost two sales today and all my future sales forever. Love this place! You walk in, and are greeted with the delicious smells of meats, and cheeses, and sauerkraut. My sisters mother in law is from Germany, and recommended that I check it out. She loves her European groceries that she grew up with. They sell a random mix of items, like vinegars, breads, beers, and chocolates. They even have a deli with fresh cheeses, meats, and sausages. With a few tables where you can sit to enjoy a nice lunch. I go in for vinegar, and always leave with much more. read more
