I just bought my first road bike from Alpine Hut. I literally bought it from them instead of buying another bike I'd been eyeing from a different shop because of their fantastic customer service. Highlights of my experience: * I stopped by one night and realized it was after hours. I glanced in the window to see if they had road bikes and a man came to the door. He was working after closing and when I explained what I was shopping for and my intention to came back, he invited me in so I could see what they had so I would know if they had anything that might meet my needs. Twenty minutes of pleasant, informative conversation, I left, knowing I'd be back to do a proper test ride. (In the interm I went to 7 other bike shops and rode many bikes. I had variable service experiences, and unfortunately had pretty bad customer service at both shops that had the bike I liked the best at that point. I held true to my personal promise to return to Alpine Hut). * When I did come back I was immediately greeted as I walked in the door by a pleasant salesman (a different person than I had met before). He listed to my questions, was glad to offer a test ride, and was articulate about the differences between the bikes in my price range. He did the best job of any salesperson I interacted with in my multi-week shopping adventures of offering just the right amount of information in terms I could understand. He happily changed out a stem that was too short when I told him the bike felt "squirrely" during my test ride and seemed genuinely interested that I was having a good, and positive test ride experience and shopping experience. * When I came back from my third test ride with the bike "perfectly" set for me (seat height, stem length) I told him I wanted the bike, but wondered if I should upgrade the rear derailer (which was a grade lower than the other bike I had been eyeing on the market). Instead of making extra money by having me spend money on something I might not actually benefit from, he explained to me the pros and cons of making that change and offered his recommendation that it might not be worth my money to do that. I ended up not getting the upgrade and am happy with that decision. * While I was at the store, at least two people stopped in with random needs (e.g. quick repair requests) and the repair folks seemed very proactive and helpful to meet their needs. In short, if you want helpful customer service who will work with you to find the bike of your dreams (and I believe be honest if they don't have the bike of your dreams), you should head for the Alpine Hut. They certainly have a new customer-for-life here! read more

The customer service here is simply outstanding. I came in to look at their bike selection. I told them that I hadn't owned a bike in over ten years. After a few questions, the sales rep selected a few bikes to try out and lo and behold, I found the perfect match. I wasn't planning on buying anything today, my intent was to shop around, but I couldn't pass up this perfect opportunity. The sales rep was patient, knowledgeable, and offered a range of options. I truly felt that she wasn't trying to push a particular model or brand over the others. It was a great experience and now I have a bike to celebrate the first day of summer. I wanted to find a good bike shop that is fair and without the cyclist-elite attitude, so I devised a plan. I think Yelp reviews are a great place to start when searching for a business, but without experiencing the establishment nothing can be known for sure. I had recently been given a bike with some damage, and decided to take each of the two equally damaged wheels to the two highest Yelp ranked bike shops as a test. My first stop was here at Alpine Hut where I took in the front wheel and was surprised at the friendly and efficient service; I was offered a used replacement wheel for $25. The rim was slimmer with a presta valve hole, but for a crappy bike I plan on turning into my commuter bike it was just fine. I really appreciated not being treated like an outsider or some kind of foolish-clown with a cheap wheel. I got the feeling that these guys want to help their customers. read more

I do not recommend this place at all. Scheduled a tune up a week in advance, when I showed up, they had no idea about my reservation and couldn't find the ticket that I had filled out. After that got figured out, I got a call saying it was ready, and then an attempt to up-sell me on a new pedal. I had a fully functional pedal with a few scrapes, but no need to be replaced. So go to pick up my bike, and the rear tire is flat. It sat for 3 days after I rode it, then dropped it off, it wasn't flat before I dropped it off. If it was something I picked up while riding,(The tire was shredded!! Refer to my main pic) 3 days would have been plenty of time for the air to leak out of the tire, but they had "no idea" how it happened, then tried to sell me a tire! They did end up giving me a used tire. I left, then was inspecting and test riding my bike, it was still having trouble shifting (the reason I took it in for a tune up) and the rear rack mounting bracket had been completely removed. I went right back, and the response was "sorry we forgot to tell you, it broke". Again, wasn't broken when I dropped it off, how did it get broken? Again I was told "we have no idea". They didn't even offer to fix it, or to give me the part back, I had to ask for it, and then had to ask for the mounting screws to be returned as well. I put it back together with the same parts, and nothing was broken! Surprised they didn't try to sell me a new one. I just cant believe I paid $75 to get my bike back in worse condition that when I dropped it off. I will NEVER go back! read more

Solid shop with reasonable prices. Good place to get gear and a ski or bike tuneup. I don't recommend getting your Intuition ski boot liners there though. Mine weren't done quite right and they were unbearable on my first run in them. The guy who did it was competent enough, but he didn't factor some details into the molding (such as a high volume custom insole is use) and didn't use enough toe cap for me. Luckily, after one excruciating run with cramping arches I ran into the guy at the bottom of Crystal Mountain who turned out to be one of the most experienced Intuition fitters in the world and he fixed me up right. read more

Bought boots and bindings - that went fine - salesman did a great job. Then needed a little work on the boots, and bindings mounted - and had to go through Kyle. Bummer. Long story short - don't let the guy work on your boots (I did, and spent a week on nothing - I'll go to a real boot fitter elsewhere) or do anything but the simplest binding stuff. read more

My first experience at Alpine Hut was a blast. Jim helped me pick out my first road bike and after testing many bikes here and elsewhere, I went with a Raleigh Revenio 2.0. I can't say anything bad about my first experience with Alpine Hut, but I wanted to offer it in contrast to the review I'm about to write. Since I purchased it in May, I've ridden my Raleigh probably around 100 miles. I go for four miles a day and I'm just getting a good rhythm. Yesterday morning, after pulling my bike off the 545 in Redmond, I hopped on and rode for about 300ft before the left crank arm *fell off* my bike without warning. I managed to recover the crank arm but I lost the FSA bolt that held it in place. So that evening, I took my bike to Alpine Hut; I was certain that they'd make it right. When I walked in, I explained what happened to Wes and I asked, "That isn't supposed to happen, right?" Well, Wes assured me that it was perfectly normal for a crank arm to fall off a bike within its first 100 miles of being ridden. He told me that it wasn't unexpected and that they had done nothing wrong in their assembly of the bike. He told me that I would have noticed that it was loose long before it happened and that I should have brought it in sooner. I'm not an expert on road bikes, but my research (and my friends) tell me that crank arms do not simply fall off bikes that are properly assembled. I argued with Wes and suggested that Alpine Hut pay for the part, but Wes assured me that it wasn't their fault at all and that I would need to pay for the part myself. My bike is less than 90 days old and was purchased from their shop. Let that sink in. Anyway, I told Wes that I wasn't trying to give him a hard time, just that I think Alpine Hut had made a mistake. His response? "I couldn't care less at this point." I don't know how a small bike shop like this can stand to lose customers. Take your business elsewhere, or at least, ensure that you're being helped by Jim. I'm sure Wes is a great mechanic but he shouldn't be allowed out of the back room. UPDATE: Only a couple days after taking my bike to Alpine Hut and talking to Wes, Jim called me and told me he'd fixed my bike free-of-charge (much faster than the week that Wes communicated to me). As the majority of the service I have received from them has been amazing, I'm going to modify this review to give them a solid four stars. Make sure you talk to Jim when you head to Alpine Hut. read more

There aren't six stars available for this review so I will settle for 5. It isn't the prettiest store around town and you won't be able to get a latte or soy chai tea while you stroll, but they make up for it in solid customer service, advice and fantastic people. If you are looking for a Mom and Pop ski shop in Seattle, this is it. Their boot fitting is superb and their ski selection is excellent. They are very competitive with their pricing and I have found will do whatever they can to make things right. There is very little attitude amongst their staff and beginners who are looking to get started shouldn't be afraid that they will be excommunicated because they don't speak the "lingo". I have been skiing for 35+ years and they definitely have a customer for life. read more

My wife and I went to Alpine Hut today to buy ski boots. Actually, I went first and got a great pair of boots. I have pretty messed up feet (I'll spare you the details) but Kyle worked his magic and made them fit like a glove. I was so happy about finally having a pair of well-fitting boots that my wife wanted new boots, too. Although we showed up 30 minutes before closing time, Kyle took his time, adjusted her boots, and made sure that she was super comfortable. We left the store 20 minutes after official closing time and were let out with a smile and the encouragement to come back if anything needed to be adjusted. The folks at Alpine Hut not only know their stuff but they also know what really good customer service means. Highly recommended. read more

Wow, I started using these guys this season. First to fix the laminate that came off a beloved pair is skis. We have been into the Alpine Hut three or four times over the last couple of weeks for a ski repair, a boot repair, a binding adjustment, and, ultimately, a purchase of new skis. The staff there is extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. Ryder thoughtfully came up with a perfect pair of new-but-on-sale skis for my son, and the owner and his dog, Ossa, are friendly and helpful. I've been in here off and on for over a decade. I live in Ballard and work downtown, so it's easy to drop off my bike and catch the bus, and then vice-versa. But If I move I will continue to patronize them. To Trevor C., upthread...? There almost always one mechanic at any shop who does a half-assed job, at least once in a while, so I sympathize. But we all have coworkers who embarrass us with substandard work. I hate to have you let one experience form your opinion. In my MANY experiences, they are friendly and fair, and GOOD. Wes, especially, was extremely patient when I was selecting a bike, and he did a very complete job renovating my uncared-for bike for a more than fair price. Unlike Aarons! Yes, I agree with other posters - what kind of a sick individual enjoys humiliating his staff - and in front of customers?? If I had not seen it I wouldn't have believed it. The guy's a cartoon. I came in here a few months back to check out the Diamondback Mission. The owner seemed fairly knowledgable about the bike, but he didn't get my hints that I knew more about the technical aspects of the bike's parts than he did. He insisted on reading the spec sheet to me, didn't understand what a few things meant, but I didn't have the heart to correct him. I found his pushiness about the Diamondback brand and inability to leave me alone with the bike for 5 minutes pretty annoying. They had very few Diamondbacks in stock, which is understandable for a shop located on Elliot ave. I think the owner had the best intentions, but his sales mannerisms annoyed me and turned me off to the shop. I did appreciate that he suggested I buy the lower spec'd bike so save some cash though, even though he could have tried pitching me on the higher priced version. I ended up buying a bike elsewhere. read more

Would be a great convienant location for me, but I will never go back to that shop. After not riding for 10yrs, I was setting my Alu Cannondale up to be a 14mi commuter bike and I brought it in the Hut for new tires/tubes. The staff "set me-up" with folding tires and a pair of tubes that were too small for the tires for A little less than $90. After inflating to 100PSI, the tubes burst when rolling the bike around the garage. I replaced with the correct tubes from "Hello Bicycle" but the tires flatted them once every week for a month on the Elliot Bay Trail/ Yesler/ or Chief Sealth Trail. There were glass cuts in the tread every 6 inches on the tire after 200 miles. I found the same tires on the internet for $11 each. I bought tires/tubes (Schwable Marathon $70) from "Hello Bicycle" and have not had a flat in 4 months. read more

So wow...these guys are awesome at what they do. Stopped by after reading fellow yelp reviews you will not be disappointed. Extremely professional and accommodating. My wife and I went in looking for ski boots and the experience was exceptional. We tried several boots on and were never pressured to buying the most expensive or "this seasons hot boot", what's comfortable and what works for you is their goal. Be honest in your ability and what you're working towards and they'll help you find your perfect fit! They heat treated my wife's and my boot for our perfect fit. They recommended we return to the shop for any tweaks we needed to the boots after our first outing with them (no extra hidden charges)You can try boots on all day but you won't know if they work for you until after that first day on the slopes. Best shop in Seattle, they know their stuff. Side note: The women next to my wife and I had pants that were too tight to roll up for them to properly fit the ski boots with ski socks. The staff was more than happy to suggest she try one of their outerwear pants so they could properly fit the boot. It was a noticeable customer service gesture that I thought needed to be pointed out. Shop dog is a sweetie too:) read more

I bought a bike here last year. I went to all of the bike shops in Seattle (well most of them) and this place had the best bike. I just love it! The sales guy was really knowledgeable and didn't pressure me. The bike is made by Felt but is a comfort bike...it's zippy yet comfortable. Plus, you get a tune up and any tweaks made free. This is a great shop that knows how to take care of their bike customers. read more

This place is legit. Over the years they've waxed and tuned our family's skis, fitted us out for bikes, and swapped / exchanged gear as kids have grown out of it or as we've wanted to upgrade. Excellent range of bike and ski gear, from top-tier to really affordable. They've even popped open a few beers when things were taking a long time one evening (three families rolled in at closing) to keep everyone happy while they worked through the backlog. Located convienently enough on 15th Ave in Interbay, this local gem has never wavered at providing top notch service combined with expert advice and atmosphere. The highly trained staff are friendly and spend almost too much time making sure you've got what you came for. Great experience! This week, I brought in, to Alpine Hut my Giant AC and Trek 950 mountain bikes I just bought, used of course, from a co-worker and the folks at Alpine fixed 'em up just fine. Staff was really friendly and helpful, without trying to sell me stuff I didn't really need. By my own choice, I did buy a bunch of accessories, though.The turn around on my bikes was faster than expected. They have a good selection of bikes and gear, considering the physical size of their space. I kinda want to go back and buy one of their slick new bikes. Maybe next year. read more

Family owned businesses are rare these days, and it's no surprise that you get the best service here. I've been coming to Alpine Hut and Sports X for more than 10 years, for service on my bikes, my snowboards and to buy gear. Kyle and his dad run the shop like it should be run -- with amazing service and deep knowledge of what they are selling. It's clear that they have test cycled, jumped, tele-marked, and back-countried everything they sell in that store. In 1999, when I was two days from a mountain bike race and needed a fork overhaul, Kyle made sure the part was overnighted and my bike fixed and tuned. I never went back to another shop for service. For anyone who's heard "I can get that bike back to you in two weeks", you'll appreciate the quick and efficient service at Alpine Hut. They also have mechanics who don't turn over every season and follow the owners' example. Try finding that at the big box bike or ski stores. read more

For Mother's Day my husband took me to another bike shop to look at electric cargo bikes. We spent quite a bit of time asking questions and test riding bikes. Somehow, we fell through the cracks with that shop and couldn't get in touch with them to place and order for purchase. Today, I stopped in at Alpine Hut to see if they could help. Kyle answered my questions easily and I had a quote in my hand before I left. The Alpine Hut is awesome. They absolutely have the cleanest bathroom in Interbay, and arguably in all of Seattle. Great, welcoming staff. Excellent selection of goods. They even have cool free stickers at the register. While you're there, try the Mocca Shots from Seattle Gummy Company (one of the snacks at the counter). An excllent recommendation from the staff. I had read nice things about Alpine Hut, so I drove out of my way to bring my skis in to this shop. I spoke to someone at the right-side counter who told me to go speak with someone at the other counter. Nobody was at that other counter, so I waited. Two different employees in a row arrived at that counter, took a quick look at me, and then walked away to do other things. No hello or anything, not even an acknowledgement. I waited a few minutes more because I figured they might just be busy, but to no avail. These guys were in their own worlds. I don't know how a shop with this type of service survives when REI and Evo provide such prompt ski tuning service. I've heard the boot fitting at Alpine Hut is good, so I suppose that might be the draw, since it's so hard to find a good boot fitter. I got fitted at Whistler by one of the best boot fitters in North America, and that shop was not as poorly run as this one, despite the high volume of customers and demand for his services. I can't see myself coming back to Alpine Hut, despite my overwhelming desire to support small local shops rather than large ones. The small local shops at Whistler were way better. read more

I had a great experience at Alpine Hut this week during my first bicycle purchase in 6 or 7 years. I had done some online research and had a idea of the kind of bike I was looking for. Their salesman Mike did a great job soliciting info from me about my needs then helping me narrow their selection down to two great bikes. He provided clear, helpful feedback so I could make a good decision. The two bikes I chose between had prices that were $500 apart and Mike strongly recommended the less expensive one based on how I intended to use the bike and my style of riding. I was impressed and satisfied with his genuine interest in hooking me up with the best bike for me. I was compelled me to haggle on the price a little and although he declined, he did offer to give me a nice discount on any accessories, gave me a free bike fitting, changed the tires to my preference, and gave the bike an extra check before I left to ensure it was dialed in and all components were perfectly adjusted. I didn't get a lower price on the bike but I felt like Alpine Hut gave me a great value for the money I spent. Mike and his colleages were well informed on the products they sell and are obviously and genuinely enthusiastic about bicycles and riding. Will definitely buy from them again and recommend them completely. read more

Went in here because it's close to where I live and I just needed new tubes in my bike tires. I arrived there around 5:30, expecting to just drop my bike off and pick it up the next day as they closed at 6 and I hadn't intended hitting them up so close to closing, but they said they could do it in a few minutes, no problem. The guy who did the job (didn't get any names, sorry!) not only let me watch him do it, but explained what he was doing and provided several helpful tips about the process. I knew how to change tubes in theory, but have been fortunate enough (so far) that I've never had to do an emergency roadside switch-out, now having seen someone do it it'll be that much easier when the time comes. It's a simple enough process but that's just it, a lot of mechanics would either not want to show a customer how it's done, because if a customer has the knowledge to fix something then they don't need a mechanic, or some bike mechanics might have treated me like an idiot because I've never changed a tube myself. So bonus points to Alpine Hut for not handing me any kind of bike hipster snarkiness, I really appreciate that. Only about 20 bucks for new tubes and installation and a few minutes of my time and I was back out on the road again. Would definitely return if I need anything else done. My sincere thanks! read more
