Nick and his partner Brad eventually opened their own shop, Temescal Alley in Oakland, and upon Al's retirement, spruced up and reopened Al's shop in Alameda. Both Temescal Alley and Al's offer skillfully executed, classic haircuts and shaves. Both shops have multiple barbers on duty and free neighborhood parking within a block or two's walk. The key difference is that Temescal Alley in Oakland is walk-in only, while Al's in Alameda is appointment only. I like the laid-back vibe of Alameda (be sure to observe the speed limits) and the appointments at Al's, but if you don't mind waiting your turn, Temescal Alley is a vibrant place to hang out. read more

I came along with my husband to his appointment today with our 3 month old son and the men who work here are so nice, professional, and good at what they do I was moved to give them 5 stars! I was just along as a bystander but all the men in the shop were so kind and kept offering me seats (I was wearing Arlo in a baby carrier and standing up), and even engaged me in a bit of convo even though I wasn't the one in the chair. Also, let's be real... these guys are easy on the eyes as well. Street parking only isn't ideal but not terrible and the rates are reasonable. My husband used to *only* go to Temescal Alley Barbershop but enjoys their affiliate, Al's more now and will only come here for his cuts. Solid spot! I've been going to the Temescal Alley for a while but decided to make an appointment with Joe P. to check out the expansion/"new" shop. Al's is a nice neighborhood barbershop in the small bizarre world of Alameda. It's walking distance to a mediocre burrito place and a few bars so they have their location down pat. I n terms of service things are great at Al's as Joe is a pro. Not only does he do a great job at cutting hair; making sure your neck is shaved, your dangly ass Dumbledore eyebrows are trimmed and that your ear sprouts are hedged, but he's also a great guy and has that easy conversational tone that makes him really stand out. All the barbers at the shop are great and I would recommend the spot to anyone looking for a good reasonably priced cut. read more

I came here after finding out the Temescal Alley Barber Shop expanded to this location. Depending on which day you come, you'll find the same barbers here. They did some renovations to the place but it's essentially the same Al's Barber Shop from before. Anyway, I got another great haircut from Nick and I didn't have to wait an hour or two before he was able to cut my hair. The fact that this place takes appointments online is SUPER convenient. This place is solid! Apparently the shop changed hands and they did a remodel. It looks really great. My barber is Joe. He is not only a fantastic hair cutter. He is also very easy to talk to and makes you feel comfortable. Joe told me that everyone who works there are all great barbers so I will hit one of the other guys if he's not in. Was disappointed when Nick left to start up at Temescal, and truly lost when Al retired last July. In fact, I've only had two haircuts since then, until I walked in yesterday and got 'barbered'. Met Joe, Paul and Brad, who gave me a great "Wife Approved" haircut and beard trim. Those guys did a lot of hard work re-vamping the shop. It looks sleek and clean, but they kept the vintage barbershop look. Yes, the cost is more, but it's well worth it and I won't go anywhere else. I have been a regular at Temescal Alley Barber Shop for 3 years, so I was very excited to hear they were taking over Al's after Barber Al Vigna retired. Al's is only a short walk from our house and you can make an appointment online. This allows me to get my hair cut after work during the week with no wait. Now on the weekends, I can spend time on more important stuff like: surfing, banging the old lady, playing with the kids, and driving sports cars, instead of waiting hours to get my hair cut. Great spot! I was in and out of Alameda for work over a period of months and I went here several times, to a different chair each time. The cuts are tasteful and clean, and the staff is professional yet fun. It was comforting to find out places like this still exist, where you can tell someone unfamiliar how you like to have your hair cut and walk out looking exactly as you described.
