Upon entry to the establishment we were surprised to see the nice setup they have for dine in guests considering they are next door to a gas station. It was very clean and tastefully decorated. We had seen a review on them and had been wanting to come pay them a visit but their hours are a little wonky as they open for a few hours and close down for a few and open back up for dinner time. This is unfortunate for us because we commute 50 minutes one way to work and when we come home they are always closed by 2:00 and don't open until 4:00 sadly. Nevertheless, we had a chance to pop in today due to the holidays. We ordered the Al's Steak Special and the Italian sub. We thoroughly enjoyed both of them with having a few things we commented on and noticed to one another. My husband loves trying Italian subs all over and so he had to try it here. The flavor was nice and the bread was great.. the middle was a little light as you can see the meat thinly layered in the sub roll and then filler of the lettuce and tomatoes and red onion. So, if you typically like an Italian thick/heavy with the meat, this may not be your preferred selection here. However, it did taste good ! I love finding a good cheesesteak and the review we saw was for just that, so I had to try it! Again, the bread was noticeably delish and not soggy at all! I had mine with everything but tomatoes. I think for my own preference I would ask them to cook my green peppers longer. Again, to each their own! Flavor was good.. added a little salt/pepper but it was full and very good. I would get it again.. and their menu options look really good so we will have to come back if we can fit into their open hours.. This was the end of my keto diet as I landed in the Hagerstown area. Italian food is usually not great for keto - bread, pizza, pasta are all carbs. There are not many choices for dining in Clear Spring and this is immediately across the street from my hotel. A very polite young man seated me at the table, brought my drink and then took my order. The pizza took 15 minutes to be prepared and brought to my table. They're still on disposable plasticware and plates in late May. The Hawaiian pizza was reasonably topped with ham and small pineapple bits. A little doughy, but tasty and more flavorful after a good sprinkling of red pepper flakes. A true dive in the sense of Diner's Drive Ins and Dives...... but OMG!!! This was wonderful ! It's obvious everything is handmade and house made in the restaurant. The garlic bread is like a giant cinnamon roll only made with butter and garlic. I grew up in a family Bakerey and I know one of bread is handmade and this was. The shrimp Alfredo was fantastic. My wife's dish as well as her daughter and son-in-law's dishes were beautifully made. As always the test of the restaurant days, will I go back? . We had a good initial visit at the beginning of the year. Our return visit wasn't so wonderful. We had "The Worst" salad we have ever been served. In over sixty years of dining out, 'never seen anything like it. It was beyond belief. A small, wilted handful of lettuce thrown on a small plate. It also included: one small, grape-tomato and three small pieces of onion. The pitiful salad was followed by the much-ballyhooed lasagna and a medium sized two-topping pizza. The lasagna came with bread (one hard roll). We were charged $1.50 for the butter. The lasagna was half-warm, half-cold. It was devoid of Ricotta cheese and had very little mozzarella. I've had better frozen. In fact, Stouffer's is by far, superior and costs about 1/10 of the charged price here (nearly $20). Absurd. The pizza was average. Not bad but nothing to write home about either. The young girl that was our waitress was extemely apathetic. It appeared she was being forced to be there (probably by her parents). She wasn't rude. She just didn't seem to care. She was probably responsible for the handful of brown lettuce on a small plate (called a salad). I know the old saying. . ."three times a charm." I doubt, however, we'll give this out-of-the-way gas station/restaurant a third try. Shame on Al, or whomever takes responsibility for this place. read more

I ordered the Maryland crab soup and the potatoes were still hard. I then ordered a rare burger with fries since the burgers only come with chips. The fries were fresh and very good. The burger was over done, broken in pieces and unable to hold it to eat. Very messy. I've had better for sure. My husband had the Maryland Blue Crab ravioli and he enjoyed it. I can't recommend Al's Pizza because the price was too high: I paid $50, plus tip, for two large pizzas. Is that the price of pizza now? How long was I quarantined? I get four pizzas for the same price, that are just as good, from my regular place. Yes, the pizzas were good - but thoughts of consuming these specific pies will not intrude upon your mind. One of the pizzas was the White Gourmet Pizza made with garlic butter, mozzarella, ricotta and parmesan cheese. The other was Al's Garden Pizza made with a pizza sauce base with mozzarella cheese, black olives, tomatoes, spinach, broccoli, and diced garlic. The crust was a good bake too. The service was good. I ordered the pizzas over the phone. I didn't need to hold. The young lady who took my order was all business. The pizzas were done by the time I arrived. On the way to DC we stopped in for lunch. The service was great and the pizza was one of the best I've ever had. The pizza by the slice is huge! The crust is light and not heavy or overly filling. For a small town restaurant, it's really a super good place. While I'm not the biggest fan of their pizza (though a lot of folks are), their wings, pasta, and calzones are awesome and enormous. Their hours are sometimes wonky, so call before you try to come here to dine in, but you can't go wrong with most of their offerings. I highly recommend! read more

This is one of the most surprising restaurants I've been to, ever. Al's is hard to see in to from the parking lot, and the large attached BP is reminiscent of the horrible, overpriced ambiguous cafes usually attached to gas stations that you just visit because you literally have no where else to go to feed yourself. But Al's isn't like that. The inside is fairly nice, and the hostess stand and great service assure that this is actually a real, standalone restaurant. The menu is long and varied, with some delicious Italian favorites as well as some dishes with a local twist. I got the New England Clam Chowder as an introduction to Maryland, which I thought was just OK. There were too many potato chunks relative to the crab, and the potato was kind of chewy which didn't make it too appetizing. In my party, however, we had some people get a turkey sandwich which was HUGE, a good value and pretty high quality. Another dish we got was the cheese ravioli, which were these big raviolis filled with a typical ricotta-based cheese filling and covered in red sauce. The raviolis were oozing with cheese, and even though the price for this pasta dish was steep, you get a fair amount of food and could probably get two meals out of it. read more

Great off the beaten path stop. Initially worried when we saw it was a gas station too. However, inside is a cozy real Italian style restaurant. We ordered the gamut: spaghetti and meatballs, an Italian sub, and a small pizza. The friendly server told us the pasta and breads were homemade everyday and we could taste it. Pizza crust was crispy and the right thickness. The spaghetti was al dente, the sauce flavorful with bay leaves and crushed fresh garlic and the sub was practically inhaled by my husband. He said he eat here weekly if we lived nearby! All the games you could want on three screens to boot- football, basketball, and soccer.. what? The Real Madrid game?! Impressed on many levels. I typically only go here because it is convenient. The food quality is inconsistent- sometimes it's good, sometimes not so much. It's a little pricey comparatively. I've had times where I ordered a meal after reading the menu and ingredients weren't included and the owner told me that most people don't like that ingredient so even though it's on the menu they don't put it on there- didn't offer any solution other than that- but this was a long time ago. We were in the area for a wedding at Whitetail Ski Resort, and because we weren't familiar with the area we searched on handy, dandy Yelp. Lo and behold across the street from where we were staying there was a spot to eat! And the prices weren't outrageous either. When we walked in we were the only patrons, but that was ok because: 1) it was a Friday at like 4 pm and 2) we got to talk to the awesome waitress at the front cashier! She walked us through her recommendations and what was popular to order. There was sooo many options to choose from - pizza to hot subs to cold subs to pastas! We decided to split the Italian cold sub and crab fries. While we were waiting on our food, we had an awesome conversation with our waitress, and we had such a good experience that when our food was ready, we decided to dine in instead of taking it to go!
