Autographed movie-star photos fill the walls, and there are celebrity look-alike dolls on shelves in the back. Everything is rather faded, and the place feels a bit musty and rickety, but it somehow survives in a "Sunset Boulevard" kind of way. I've walked by this place many times, but it's always closed since they're only open until 3PM on weekdays. I happen to be in the neighborhood today, so I thought I should give it a try since it's too kitschy not to. Orange formica and plastic red flowers are all around. It turns out to be a solid greasy spoon, sort of like a roadside diner on Route 66 somewhere past Kingman, Arizona, circa 1946. Works for me especially since I'm a movie trivia sponge. I can actually appreciate an autographed picture of Kim Novak next to my table. I tried the $8.25 Big Burger with Cheese (see photo), and it was good dive food. Sure, they used American cheese slices. However, the meat, all eight ounces of it, was fresh, and it came on a soft French roll with a pile of fries and a cup of their meatball soup. The soup was more like a cup of ground beef, but I didn't mind. Hearty stuff here...they don't kid around with the cholesterol. The staff looks like they've been here for years since the service was kind of robotic. A server gave me two different checks, and another needed to be coaxed to give me a refill on my Diet Coke. But in a way, it all fits the greasy spoon mindset I should have expected here. I just noticed it's open on weekends until 4PM, so if my arteries can take it, I may just come back. A roadside diner in the Outer Mission...cool. FOOD - 4 stars...a good, greasy-spoon-style burger...who can argue with that? I really regret to inform you, but Al's Cafe has changed. It was bought by new owners who changed the menu. We decided to give it a chance anyway. I regret to give them two stars, but I have to be honest about my reviews. It's not personal, it's food. I ordered the Florentine Eggs Bennie. It was totally too fancy for it's own good. The spinach was raw, topped in avocado, a slice of cheese and covered in a White Wine Holendaise. The hasbrowns were overcooked and not crispy enough. They were like you took a chunk of mashed potatoes and slightly fried the outside. My friend ordered the regular Eggs Benedict, which had a weird holindaise flavor to it as well. We thought it may be packaged and maybe that's why it tasted a little different. Now that would normally sound okay breakfast, maybe it was just our taste buds or we were expecting something different... but after we left - we got the meanest stomach aches that lasted all day. On my route of breakfast / brunch spots; this place has always had an authenticity that other nouveau diner places aspire to. I ordered the steak and eggs today, and I got a steak that any restaurant would be proud to serve. USDA Prime, done just the way I ordered; perfectly prepared and seasoned. Way better than I expected, and worth every penny. It was so good that I tried some A.1 sauce, and the A.1 made it worse, not better. Most places, when you order steak and eggs, the understanding is that you get some Filet of Shoe steak with no apologies. They can do this at Al's Super Cafe, but I highly endorse their real steak. This place was a disappointment, should've gone to the place next door. We were overcharged, the place was dark and gloomy and the food was ok. We ordered the Pancake delight, the 2 eggs any style with bacon, an extra side of hash browns and 2 coffees and an orange juice. Note: Do not get the coffee it is watered down! At most the bill should've been $30 based on the menu prices but we got a $40 bill. Despite all that we tipped a small amount and the reaction from the (presumed) owner was uncalled for. He took the signed receipt walked off but then stopped in his tracks to comment about the tip, as if it was too small. We're not coming back. Ordered breakfast for 2 and went to pick it up. Immediately when I get there, the Cook behind the counter, starts screaming at me to go run out and track down the woman that just walked out with a bag because apparently she had my food. First of all, don't yell at a customer to run after another customer to try and pick up your mistake. It was pouring rain and the woman wasn't responding when I was flagging her down so he calls one of his waitresses to run out after her but she was afraid to get wet in the rain and didn't really do much. Eventually the woman in the car saw us and figured there's something going on and ran back into the restaurant with the food which I had to double check because I wasn't sure if I got the right order. This is terribly organized and the food is really bad. FYI, don't order the biscuits and gravy because it comes with undercooked shitty canned biscuits. read more

Today, I woke up craving corned beef and hash. I looked through the available options on UberEats and saw Al's. It's a simple dish - corned beef, potatoes and eggs. But WOW was it cooked well. This was one of the best corned beef hash that I've had. The saltiness from the corned beef balanced perfectly with the thinly sliced potatoes, which were not salty at all. There was no grease pooling at the bottom of my take out box, a huge feat considering how greasy this dish can be. Every ingredient tasted fresh and perfectly seasoned. My boyfriend got the eggs florentine and that was quite good as well. All of the ingredients were fresh and the presentation was nicely done. I forgot to take photos because the food was so good, but I'll take some pics when I order from them again. I'm seriously considering ordering another corned beef hash, and will pick it up so that they won't lose revenue to a delivery app. read more

So this is just another diner but it's a life saver when you're craving breakfast on a weekend in sf. The service is awesome with someone always filling your water or bottomless coffee or checking on how you're doing. I just wish I liked the food more: My scramble and hash brown were watery and bland French toast was dipped in a batter that felt like there was flour but created a thick coating and wasn't too appetizing I do like places that give you a biscuit as your side toast without an extra charge. 3.5 stars Al's recently re-opened, under new management. The new place has been stripped of most of the hollywood memorabilia, and feels a little empty. Gone is the kitsch. Gone is the charming, but slightly incompetent waitress. The new Al's will have to live on good food alone and luckily it does. Aside from the toast (they bring it out with the coffee), the food and service is incrementally better. The denver omelet was solid, and I recommend the "Pancakes Delight": pancakes, 2 eggs, toast, ham, and potatoes with plenty of butter and syrup on the side (check the photos). I wouldn't drive across town to eat here, but if they can improve the decor and stay consistent with the quality, there may finally be a solid breakfast/brunch spot in the neighborhood. read more

Al's is the ultimate diner, a dying breed when the techies took over the town. It's been around forever. Their biscuits & gravy are the best in town, so we usually order those. Before Covid, you could eat indoors in their 50s style counter or at tables--the decor is what could only be called "quaint." Lots of vintage photos of old movie stars above formica tables. The service is great, the staff prompt & attentive. They can occasionally put tables outside. Al's does indeed have the bottomless cup of coffee. If you want to have a nice, unpretentious, old-school breakfast or lunch, Al's is the spot for you. read more

Lonely, kinda dirty, plain old school place. Diner style where he cooks right in front of you and the menu is years and years old. I chose to get chicken fried steak with coffee and I have to say the gravy on the steak was a bit on the salty side. The eggs where made as requested and the toast that it came with was as if you just bought it from the local Safeway a block away. The hashbrowns here actually not that bad. He used sliced potatoes which where a cool thing to see. And taste good too. You can drive to Monterey and get 4 Avo's for 1$ (depending on the season), but gas, so you're probably not saving anything other than having the best fucking life ever driving to Monterey to buy cheap Avocados. I'm sure you can find some cute bread either at Tartine or Safeway, who cares. So you want to go to a diner and leave all this bullshit behind, Al's Super Hyphy Cafe is your next stop. Tucked in between a new Ramen hotspot and Good Frikkin Chicken you are going to want to spend your $12 at Al's. The new Ramen place was Ichi Sushi before, which is where I "would" bring a top notch call girl for dinner and spend 2K. Ichi is now up the block in a much smaller "less call girl friendly" locale. Same thing happened to Emmy's Spaghetti Shack. SAME THING. Good Frikkin Chicken, I must declare is a place I do not frequent because I cook my own chicken dammit. I am selling my Crown Victoria on Craigslist and some guy called and offered me Chickens for the car, I sad no, chickens are not economical for me right now. Al's has bottomless coffee, Al's has house Salsa, Al's closes at 3PM, There is nobody named Al that I'm aware of, Al's has people that go there because they are hungry and haven't traded their soul and or dignity for some Yeezy Boosts. There is a couple of old guys that eat there everyday (at least 95 years old) and the Cook (Al?) and the one waitress and dishwasher treat them like ROYALTY. I think I may live to 80 but holy fuck I want to be these old ass dudes who eat at the bar (no back rest) and be a regular, I'm just 60+ years behind them emulating their style. Look, I literally got fired from a volunteer job at a golf course because I left a bad Yelp review ("how'd you get fired on your day off Craig" -Friday) . Cartman had an entire episode of South Park about being a food reviewer because he yelped everything and was an entitled dick about it. Interesting gem tucked away in the Mission that serves quality breakfast in a spacious area at a very reasonable price. I was actually surprised at how much seating there was, given that the rest of the Mission is pretty small and cramped. We sat a table of 10 comfortably. The service is impeccable. There is absolutely nothing negative to say about the staff, all of whom were super friendly, attentive (perhaps because we were the only ones there too...), and patient. The walls are plastered with interesting movie, show, record posters or labels -- gives off a nice, hip, artistic vibe. Our orders came also really quickly as well -- standard, "good" American brunch fare. I had the California scramblers, which was basically scrambled eggs topped with fresh veggies (avocados, diced tomatoes) and a side of pre-buttered wheat toast (though a bit too buttery for my taste). I love this greasy spoon, when my gut can handle it. They do two of my favorite greasy spoon breakfast foods here the RIGHT way. And in my book, that's what matters. 1) Corned Beef Hash. Forget "fancy" corned beef hash. I want the stuff that comes out of a can, then perfectly grilled up so that it's got a crunch on both sides. CHECK. In San Francisco, the land of fancying everything up, Corned Beef Hash the way I like it is hard to find. I ask the waiter sometimes, how do you do your corned beef hash and they talk about how they make it fresh and put herbs in it. WHAMMY. NO! You do NOT put herbs in corned beef hash. It's gotta be mushy on the inside, crisp on the out. No herb in sight (except maybe a parsley for decoration.). That's the way I like it. 2) Hash brown. Let me repeat - hash browns and not home fries. Why does anyone bother making home fries? Who likes home fries?? Hash browns is real breakfast. Don't give me home fries and it better not have rosemary on it. Hash browns perfectly crisped. CHECK. I don't really get much else here except the corned beef hash breakfast. So, I can't really say much about anything else. I think I might have had the pancakes once and remember it being pretty decent. Anyhow, I don't know why this place gets a low rating. Greasy spoon hole in the walls are a dying kind. There is a time and place for a fancy brunch, but sometimes you just want some grease. When that's what you want... come here. read more

While we were waiting the owner walked up to our table and asked If we had intentions on going next door "four chairs" we said yes at some point. Immediately he started screaming at us & told our party that wasn't right that we were going to go next door. We asked him to calm down because we didn't know why he was so upset if we were paying for drinks at his business. After he made a scene, we didn't feel welcomed and got up to leave. He screamed "no, you're going to pay for these drinks" mind you the drinks never made it to our table. We told him no, after this experience & he called us "mother fuckers" and told us to leave. In all honesty his temper cost him a sell and he will continue to lose business by acting this way to guest. I will never come back and will never recommend this place ever. read more

Excellent, unpretentious spot. Great decor for a diner. Food is the most reasonable I've had in Bernal/Mission area in a long time. I ordered a tiny breakfast. The person there told me "those are small portions, is that okay?" Loved him for doing that. Turns out that the portions were just right and that the sausages were bigger than I expected. My friend got four pancakes, eggs and sausage too. He managed not to finish, so I helped him. A curious thing however, is that the delicious syrup may have been overheated. It became a little viscous when it started to cool. Never happened to me before. (Like when fudge gets overheated and no longer stays gooey, but becomes a block instead) To be honest, it was fun to play with and eat. My friend and I laughed and laughed and the. I finished it.
