Drove down to Monterey/Carmel to spend a day celebrating my friend's bday. First stop was Alta Bakery & Cafe. We drove by and noticed there was a long line wrapped around the corner. Parking on the streets wasn't that hard and it was only a 6 minute walk. This place is pretty spacious with indoor and outdoor seating (dog friendly). There were a lot of fresh pastries displayed by the glass. You order your pastry lies first and if you want food and drinks, you can finish off your order at the cashier. If you order for dine in, they bring your food to your table. I'm not much of a banana bread or pumpkin bread loaf person so I opted for a Blue Corn Cookie ($4.25). The cookie texture is as perfect!! Slightly chewy, yet soft in the inside. Not too sweet. I had it with my matcha and it was a great pairing. I was able to get my matcha with oat milk ($0.50 charge) & 2 pumps of vanilla for sweetener. Matcha was about $5.80 which isn't so bad. Latte art was cute! I was originally going to order a croque monsieur but then they brought out a Steak Tartine ($14.50) to display, and I immediately wanted that instead. It looked amazing! I was able to get it warmed up and omg the melty cheese did it for me. I devoured it all. There were good amount of toppings and well worth the price in my opinion. ALTA is the kind of place you wish exists in your neighborhood so that you can become a regular and eat every last thing they make. It's that good. We ordered the Reuben croissant, a croissant sandwich, and a medley of pastries. The Reuben croissant was unlike anything I've ever tried before - the meat is enveloped into the croissant and once it's heated, there's a melty cheese topper. The croissant is so buttery and flakey and honestly this is the absolute collab - Reuben + croissant. Perfection. I also ate my croissant sandwich on the back patio under the pergola and if I ever felt so at peace while eating, this was it. The croissant is stuffed with a variety of meat and plenty of fresh veggies. It tasted very fresh and healthy and all things good. There was just something truly magical about eating a freshly baked croissant with fresh ingredients on a beautiful outdoor patio that makes you feel some type of way. I certainly felt it. Stopped by this bakery while walking around Monterey. We kicked off the morning with a raspberry danish (not overly sweet, the raspberries were fresh and refreshing), cinnamon roll (delicious, not verily sweet as well and you really appreciate the cinnamon cream), quiche of the day (leeks, sausage, bacon...need I say more?), and the sausage roll (we had asked for it warmed up, but it was a bit cold. I think we would have liked it better if it was served warm. It was ok). Coffee here is alright, did not walk out of here feeling like the energizer bunny. A chic cafe where my partner and I enjoyed a light brunch. There was a large selection of cookies, croissants, doughnuts, and even items such as lavender and earl gray mousses. I ordered a hot chai and a maple bacon swirl, and my partner ordered an iced latte and a ham-and-cheese croissant. The staff were very friendly and got our food and drinks out quickly. I thought this place would knock my socks off given the lines and the number of reviews but I felt like my experience was just okay. If I'm paying $16+ for avocado toast alone, it better be really delicious. I thought my avocado toast was just... okay. The toast was a bit too thick for my liking and I didn't really get a good crunch on the top or bottom of the toast. I like soft bread but I felt like the ratio of bread to topping was off. The avocado spread needed some salt. I also felt like the pomegranate seeds didn't add much to the dish. It added this somewhat unpleasant obstacle to enjoying the toast since seeds are a little weird to chew on. The flower petals on top looked nice but don't taste like anything. I thought the watermelon mint matcha was... fine but felt like the combination was a little strange. The three flavors are usually not seen together. I suspect they made this drink because of the pink and green color combination which made for a beautiful looking drink. The chocolate chip cookie was... also fine. I had it in a togo bag and it was absolutely covered in grease by the time I got home. The cookie itself tasted... like a normal cookie. Maybe slightly too thin for my liking. read more

This place was amazing. Stopped by on August 2025 on our one day trip to Monterey. Checked on yelp(of course) for a great coffee shop and stumbled upon this gem. Being a coffee and plant lover this place was meant for me. The baristas were able to answer of questions in regards to the delicious baked goods. We had a savory bagel, raspberry strudel, iced chai and hot mocha with orange cardamom. The environment was very relaxing, family friendly and lots of places to seat. Alta Bakery & Cafe is always bustling, and rightfully so! With lines out the door that stretch for about half a block, be prepared to wait. Despite the wait, the line moves relatively fast. We stood in that long line for about 15 minutes before we were at the counter, so don't let the length of the line intimidate you too much. As I mentioned, the wait is worth your time! Alta offers a beautiful selection of pastries and eats for a posh breakfast or lunch on the go. Be sure to wash your meal down with one of their signature drinks. Walked in for our bakery breakfast stop before driving home. Our girl group loved the open air ambiance, lots of outdoor seating great for pups and kids, and clean restrooms. All of the food is fresh and ingredients healthy. When you walk in, you're in awe of the bakery goods on display like their cookies, brownies, savory salmon croissant, and croissant-wiches that are huge and look very filling. Yes items are pricey, but you are in Monterey. They also have coffees and teas, and we also ordered entree items. The tuna sandwich is open-faced, the Mediterranean platter looks so fresh, and their salads are huge. The fresh quality is truly the winning factor of Alta. The sweets are worth the wait - might skip the savory items. We joined the queue already wrapping around the building at 9 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Unfortunately, by the time we made it to the counter, a number of pastries had sold out. We still managed to walk away with five pastries--two sweet and three savory--and a couple of whole-milk lattes. We enjoyed our haul in the beautiful, dog-friendly garden seating area out back. Despite the early sell-outs, we were happy with our selection. Our order included a classic croissant, a pistachio-rose swirl, a cinnamon bloom (what I would call a monkey bread!), a prosciutto and peach danish, and a sausage roll. The sweet pastries were the clear winners and only items worthy of a repeat visit in my opinion. The pistachio-rose swirl was hands down my favorite, but I would also happily order the cinnamon bloom again. The classic croissant was solid but would not necessitate a repeat order. On the savory side, the sausage roll was a disappointment--the pastry was mostly empty and slightly damp, and it seemed to be filled with onion but was entirely missing the promised sausage. To get here you have to park on the street but it wasn't hard to find a spot! I also feel like there are so many spots in this area to check out on your walk to this cafe so it makes it better. My boyfriend and I got here at 10:30 for a quick drink and pastry before our day in Monterey. This place was popping and the line was out the door. The service was great, very efficient. You choose your pastries once you get to the glass and the worker will warm it up upon request, then when you reach the register you order your drinks and pay for everything. They serve dishes as well but we didn't get any. By the time we ordered and were waiting for our drinks they were putting out the lunch menu and once we saw how good the sandwiches looked we got back in line, and luckily at this time there wasn't much of a line. The inside area was super nice, the place is decorated so nicely. Gives a dark coastal kind of vibe. They have lots of seating but we decided to go outside. The outside seating was so lovely. I loved the spaciousness, the flowers, and the garden next to it. It made it feel very cozy like I was invited over to someone's backyard. Drinks: I got the matcha latte with vanilla. I had asked got it iced but it came out hot. I didn't mind it so I had it anyways but the matcha flavor wasn't strong, it tasted too milky. It wasn't terrible but it definitely wasn't good. The shade of green was pale as well. My bf got the cortado and he said it was alright, he enjoyed it but said he was glad he tried it but wouldn't get it again. Food: The pastries we got for breakfast were all SO GOOD. My fav was the cinnamon pull apart muffin. Sandwiches We got the Reuben croissant and the prosciutto sandwich and we loved both of them. My boyfriend was a HUGE fan of the Reuben croissant, basically demolished it. I liked the prosciutto one, based off looks I was worried of the bread being hard but it wasn't, it was actually so good! Beautiful cafe with plenty of outdoor seating on a patio that's dog-friendly! There will most likely be a line out the door, but it moves quickly. There's a large pastry selection of both sweet and savory, as well as chia pudding or a breakfast item off their menu. Some of their pastries inside the display look so fancy they should be served on the dessert menu of a nice restaurant! Their staff is also so welcoming and friendly during the busy morning rush. This is a 4.5 star review (wish we could give half stars). The pastries are delicious: we got the tartine, with pears, ricotta, and prosciutto, and the hazelnut-banana croissant, filled with hazelnut chocolate, bananas, banana cream, and topped with a house made marshmallow! There is a spacious outside patio as well as seating inside with self-serve water. There are clean bathrooms and access to a museum in the outside area. Street parking is available. Chocolate chip cookie: 3/5. I got the cookie warmed up. It was on the crispier side and was flat in shape. It was $4.50. Gingerbread latte: 4/5. Solid latte with a unique flavor. Overhyped and overpriced. Waited approximately 45 minutes in line for this famous bakery in Monterey. At first, I was quite surprised about the limited options (maybe 10 or so pastries, and about 5-7 menu items), I was expecting more. We started with our coffees: I ordered the cold brew and my girlfriend ordered the vanilla latte. The coffee was fine, nothing special. We proceeded to eat banana bread with chocolate chips, again just fine, nothing special. The bread was a bit tough. Next, we tried the savory bun. This was basically an everything bagel topped with some tomatoes and feta. The concept was unique but the lack of toppings made most bites dry. The star of the dish was the goat cheese fritta. I loved the ambiance of this place but I wasn't too impressed with the service, the food, or the prices. I bought a waffle, a bagel, a cookie, a coffee and a hot chocolate and it was over $40 dollars. It doesn't sound like much for $5 but for the size and quality of each item , it was a bit excessive to me. I asked the barista who was taking my order if she could recommend a drink to me since it was my first time there, she did but she seemed a little bothered . I asked if they could just make me a caramel latte which she said yes but when I got my drink there was no caramel or sweetener in it. I checked the receipt to make sure she put it in, but it just said latte. The taste of the latte was good just disappointed because I wanted it sweet. The waffle was dry and piled with way too many sweetened blueberries, the croissant was okay, not mind-blowing, the $5 cookie was dry and grainy(flavor was good but I wasn't happy with the texture). First time visiting Alta Bakery & Cafe, and it was the perfect dog-friendly breakfast spot to kick off a full day of activities. We brought our pup along and had no issues finding plenty of street parking nearby. Most were 2-hour spots which was more than enough time. There were about 20 people in line when we arrived, but it moved quickly - we ordered in around 15 minutes. The outdoor seating in the back was spacious, with two separate sections and had a great atmosphere. The bathrooms were also located in the back and were very clean. It was about 55°F and a bit chilly, so if you're planning to sit outside, definitely bring a jacket. The seating area is open and breezy. Can't speak to the indoor experience, but for outside, it's very much self-service. Once you're done, you clear your own dishes and cups into the bins and head out. Super easy and casual. What we ordered: Cinnamon Bloom (8/10): Tasted amazing. Reminds me of a higher-end Cinnabon but with clearly better ingredients. The only downside was the bottom sticking to the paper which made it hard to peel off cleanly so we ended up tossing that part. Salmon Croissant (8/10): Flaky, buttery, and flavorful. I selfishly wish there was more salmon. You're mostly buying this to enjoy the croissant with just a hint of salmon. Still delicious, but set your expectations accordingly. Matcha Latte (9/10): Fantastic. Smooth and creamy with no bitterness or strange aftertaste that some places get wrong. Beautifully executed. All in all, this place is worth a visit, especially if you have a dog with you and want to enjoy a relaxing breakfast outdoors. If it's your first time, try to find a spot with longer-term parking. Sunlight, greenery, and a relaxed Monterey vibe -- it's the kind of place you could happily spend all morning. We came on a Sunday morning, and the line was long -- about a 20-minute wait but absolutely worth it. Every bite proved why this place is so popular. The pear, mascarpone, and prosciutto on sourdough was outstanding -- the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and tangy, with all those contrasting textures that make it memorable. The Reuben croissant was just as impressive, buttery and packed with flavor. I only wish I lived closer so I could work my way through their entire pastry case. This is kind of a tough one to write. Alta's food is fantastic. Their location delightful, and their options perfect. So why the three star rating do you ask? Well that's only 50% of the battle when it comes to a customer service business/restaurant. When I was at Alta on Friday I was super disappointed with the lack of hospitality I received. Being a solo parent can really be a challenge. While I understand there are just some things that come down to managing that challenge, I've also been a great number of places that have been way more accommodating. It's definitely a challenge to navigate through Alta with a stroller, but I managed. When I came to pick up my order, they didn't provide me with utensils. I had to go back and wasn't acknolwedged. Finally, a nice gentleman from back of house got me utensils. Not a single one of the 3 people that I spoke with through the order/pickup process asked if I needed a high chair, let alone if they could bring one out to me. My biggest issue here, and it's not just with Alta, is that everyone's so quick to flip around their POS and have a 20+% tip option (BTW Alta's is 22% minimum) and make you feel guilty if you don't tip, or tip less than. The real problem is that employees have come to expect this level of tipping, but don't want to actually do anything extra for their tip. Had someone made an attempt to even offer to help me, in any way, past doing their bare minimum of their job, I'd be more than happy to tip. read more

It's one of the reasons why I drove 2 hrs to come to Alta, remembering the last time I was here back in 2023, it was absolutely delicious . We just missed the breakfast menu arriving to the counter at 11 am , having waited 15 min in line. It was perfect timing as the lunch items wer being brought out. From their Croissant sandwiches, wraps, and their Chocolate cake. We ordered 2 Ruebens (on a Croissant) pulled pork pie, carrots cake cookie, cc cookie, chocolate cake, and the red velvet cake *contains walnuts* Ordered drinks Golden Latte (lots of spices like cardamom turmeric and DD's all time favorite matche latte It was a nice brunch. I may be too much of a stickler for website menus being true to in-person menus, but Alta's online selections are wholly different from their actual offerings. I was excited for three items online, a Kale Caesar, a Beet Salad and a Quinoa Bowl, so much so that I felt choice paralysis en route to the cafe. But my indecision was easily dissipated by their offering none of those three dishes. Some online menus specify that the offerings change often, but since this website did no such thing, I was disappointed. I opted instead for a salad (not on the site) that had Radicchio, Castelfranco, Candied Walnuts, Apple and Parmesan. While the salad was enjoyable and had a much-appreciated heap of Parmesan, the lack of any major player (i.e. avocado or beets or chickpeas) and the scarcity of walnuts and apples made it a one-note meal that didn't quite justify the price tag. I would order it again if it were a more well-rounded dish with tweaked ratios. But what I really want is an item off the menu they posted. Is that asking too much? Salad notwithstanding, the space is charmingly rustic and the selection and presentation of baked goods is captivating. Stopped by this place because the pastries on Yelp looked so good and I was nearby the store while exploring Monterey. Decided on the focaccia bread because of the size and I realized I wanted something more than a snack. It was large enough to share as a snack but I'm glad I got it. It was very flavorful with the right amount of salt. I noticed the shallots were mainly on one side of the bread and the tomatoes seemed to be on the other side.
