This climbing facility is amazing! My husband and I brought our climbing gear with us on a recent trip to AZ, and we decided to check out Alta. We spent a few hours here, but truthfully could have stayed all day! A couple of climbing newbies tagged along with us, and the Alta team did a great job with orientation. We were also able to quickly get belay certified, which unlocked the entirety of the gym! I was so blown away by how many routes they had available - we barely scratched the surface. The auto-belay kid-friendly area was so cool as well  - I love that they're going out of their way to make climbing fun and accessible for folks of all ages. My cousin and younger sister really enjoyed the theming - they said they felt like superheroes scaling a building to save someone! Everything was clean and well-maintained, and since we visited at a slower time, we had our choice of routes the entire time! I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in the area, and I highly recommend Alta to new and experienced climbers alike! read more

Alta is a massive climbing gym with 55-foot walls (awesome for building endurance!) and a small bouldering section. It's clean and safety-oriented, with auto-belays for anyone who is climbing without a partner or prefers the convenience. Beyond the gorgeous facility -- which includes a standard gym, kids area, and a lounging section -- my favorite feature is the color-coded routes that are also individually graded. This feels like the best setup for both intuitive climbing and fewer limitations for route-setters! If you want to unlock all the routes the gym has to offer, the top rope orientation was thorough with a lovely instructor (though not really worth the one-hour time commitment for day pass holders). The AC is awesome too, and prices are on par with other gyms. Three points of feedback: 1) Confusing for first-timers: We were unenthusiastically handed gear, shown the auto-belay, and left to be without even a one-minute gym intro to orient us. Plus, despite confirming our top rope interest, our auto-belay instructor didn't mention the top rope orientation was separate, would take an hour, and would only happen once more that day (with only 3/4 spots left -- not enough for our group). Most gyms we've been in, everyone can access this training at arrival and pick it up within 20 min. 2) The redundant paperwork: Despite being in the system after the waiver, you need to re-enter phone numbers, emails, full addresses, etc. to get signed off on auto-belay, then again on top rope. 3) The bouldering floor: I got some serious rug burn on my elbow. Not my best fall, but the textured carpet cover can do damage with the stiffer mats. I never have this issue at my home gym. Overall, Alta seems like a quality home gym for locals with excellent events, progressive climbing classes, and fitness classes. However, I think some operational fixes would greatly improve the climbing experience for new and infrequent visitors like myself. Still worth checking out for the cool facility though! read more

I love coming to Alta occasionally for the rope climbing! It's by far the tallest rope gym in the valley with walls going up to 55 feet! The setting has varied over the years, but overall there's always some fun climbs here. It's a nice mix of top rope, lead climbs, and auto belays. There is a small bouldering area too. The front desk staff could sometimes have better customer service though. Also, monthly guest passes shouldn't have a 30 day waiting period before a guest can use another one (it should just be once a month). There's plenty of parking here and the cost of a day pass is average for the industry. I would climb here more often if I lived closer! read more

I've been to the Chandler location indoor bouldering with Sherpa, and I made it into the Gilbert location to get up to speed on rappelling. I don't enjoy being in a harness much, but I guess if I want to rappel, I'm going to have to be ok with wearing a diaper. I came here to get a refresher on top rope belay. I did this eons ago in NYC, so when I did the class a few nights ago, everything came back. Tara and Gunner were my instructors, and they were fantastic! I get to come back tonight for more climbing, which I am looking forward to as this climbing gym is amazing! There is auto belay here too and regular climbing, too. Part of me has issues with another person belaying me, but I will say Tara and Gunner were great with our group of 3! My next level is getting certified to lead climb and lead belay and then onto rappelling. There is also a smaller bouldering section here, and I enjoyed that a bit after class a few days ago. I'm looking forward to that also tonight! If you need rentals, they have everything here for you. Also a nice little retail shop too. And the locker rooms are great! For starters, I love it here. So much fun in this place but the things that easily ruin the experience is the staff. This is definitely my kind of hangout outside the heat but again the staff isn't the most friendly nor helpful. Lots of options for climbing from all levels and they also have a gym. The only thing I don't like is that the kids area is crazy small. I might get a membership for me as they offer that option if I can bypass my perception of the service issues. Absolutely fantastic! The front desk was busy when we got there, lots of people checking in, but the front desk staff were personable and helpful! I contacted Alta beforehand to ask about accessibility options for a child with medical conditions and their response was so awesome and helpful! You could tell they were ready to show up however they could to accommodate this kid being able to come and enjoy the facility. Once there I was so impressed with the kids area. Tons of climbing options based on ability. It made every kid feel like they could participate. I recommend 100%! And I can't wait to go back for an adult climb experience. read more

This place is so fun! Like a giant playground for adults (and kids too, I guess! Lol). This was my first time climbing and my friend brought me in on her pass. There was a ton of variety of walls to climb, based off individual experience. I did bring my own harness but had to rent shoes, which were just $5+ tax. Not bad pricing if you ask me. Staff was everywhere to answer questions, observe, etc.. and everyone that I interacted with was friendly and respectful. The gym itself is also very well kept and clean, which is a must! I love Alta! In my time as a member over the last 3 years, I've climbed, taken yoga and fitness classes, attended workshops, cycled and become a part of a great community. Pretty decent climbing and exercise facility. Their check-in and safety waiver process with their tablets are a little wonky, especially if you're going with someone and watching it at the same time. Talk about an echo with the same video playing next to you. Guy at the front counter said we could just check out the facility, but it might have been good to have someone tour it with us to sell the benefits, pricing, class offerings, etc. So we just ended up walking solo and poking around on our own. The cycling studio seemed small but legit. Unfortunately, we weren't able to see the bikes since a class was in session. They definitely have a great gym setup with plenty of equipment that doesn't look like it's used a lot, given that most are either in a class or on the walls. Seemed more family - and kid centric type of environment compared to other rock climbing gyms across the valley that might be geared toward adults. We signed up for the homeschool club today from 1-3 and wow! How did I not know about this place?! It was $10 for two hours of climbing, instruction, warm up and cool down. The instructors were fantastic and patient and there were so many different routes. The facility has a gym, ping-pong tables, and a store. The entire place including the bathrooms are very clean. I cannot wait to return, and even though it is 30 minutes away from my house, it is more than worth the drive. I highly recommend! read more

TL:DR - Super clean, much bigger on the inside than the outside. Gym is broken up into separate sections (kids area, auto belay area, rope climbing, and bouldering) which reduces traffic jams on the routes. They have a separate auto belay section that has 5-6 auto belays and a nice wide range of difficulties. Great routes. The fitness center won't replace a full service gym gym, but is along the quality of a super nice hotel gym. Staff is really young, but super nice. Orientation is split into three different stations, which can take a while depending on availability. All in all, this place is great albeit far. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Note, we've only been here once, but they killed the first impression. As another reviewer mentioned, this place is absolutely gorgeous and super clean. It is also so ridiculously bigger on the inside than it looks from outside. A couple of things to note that I absolutely love about the place: the kids section is upstairs which makes it really great for people who do climb as there's less kids running around the climbing area and under climbers on the wall. All the auto belays are also contained to one wall, which is nice as I don't have to climb around auto belay ropes when I'm on the wall. The wall that has all the auto belays though, has a good number of them (I can't remember the exact number, but I wanna ball park like 5-6?) and a really good range of difficulties. The routes themselves were super fun, I've run into some gyms with really weird flow lately and it's just something I've come to appreciate from certain gyms. Aside from the climbing, another positive were the little touches that may have done unnoticed. There's a nice handwashing station outside the bathrooms close to the exit which makes washing your hands after a day of climbing really easy. There's lots of little touches in the bathrooms too like a dedicated area for foot washing. Some oddities that weren't bad but something to note. The orientation process can be quite long. Each person has to go to three different stations located throughout the gym to get an orientation for that specific area and get checked off: auto belay, bouldering, kids section. Each station signs a piece of paper which you return to the front desk when your done. I mean it makes sense given the size of the gym, but can get super bogged down when staff isn't readily available at each spot to give the orientation. The kids section took a particularly long time to even get someone up there. The other thing is the gym is a bit lacking. For all the emphasis on the "fitness center" part of the gym, it's mostly a really really nice hotel gym. I wish they would have a barbell and rack set vs. just a smith machine. Aside from the Smith machine they also have an extensive set of dumbbells, rings, a central cable station, and a smattering of various cardio equipment, but this is about what my apt gym has as well. The last thing that stood out was just how young all the staff were. Most seemed to be high school students or underclassmen in college. Despite that, they were all super nice and friendly. Like I've been to another gym in town where staff was similar in age and that was a terrible experience. All in all, this place is amazing and I would easily get a membership if it wasn't 40 min away without traffic. That being said, they're ladies nights and date night deals are great if you fit the criteria. read more

Alta is a bit of a drive for me, but it is certainly worth it! The building itself is beautiful and modern. The routes are fun and varied. The staff is friendly and attentive. Starting with the check in process, you sign a waiver off to the side of the check in counter. Having visited twice, both times, the check in counter was quite congested. With a line, it took about 10 minutes to share our names and pay. When I left, there was also quite a line. Day pass for adult is $23. The orientation process is a bit lengthy, but you only have to do it once. They provide you a tiny slip of paper with a checklist of things: auto belay, bouldering, belay, lead, etc. You meet staff at separate stations and get checked off. You turn it in to the front desk and they notate what you orient/test on. There are two floors to the gym with SO much to choose from. Love that they have a kids section, which "contains" a lot of the parties that they hold. In addition to the kids section, there are top rope routes, kilter and moon board. They also have a separate party room, ping pong table, and spin room. Downstairs, there are plenty of routes to choose from, along with the auto belays and bouldering section. The bathrooms are clean with shower and foot washing/drying stations. Both times I've visited, I've had a really great time climbing! After trying out a couple other climbing gyms in the past few years, I can vouch for Alta! It is such a legit gym! Not only are their walls extremely high up, but also the bouldering is cool and the workout machines in the separate room are convenient, too. If you are new here, you have to do belay and auto-belay orientations, which total take about 20 to 30 minutes. I do wish they were a little bit more organized, because I waited around for about half an hour for one of them to take place and it killed my time there. Maybe this was a one-off. Once you're done, you are free to explore and climb! Of course they have equipment that you can rent, plus snacks for purchase. If you remember, you get one free guest pass a month, so that's fun. The clientele is mainly kids and parents, so it's a fun energy and they are open quite late for you to enjoy. read more

I used to love coming here. Would spend 6/7 days a week for anywhere from 2-8hours each day. I was a regular and loved all the employees. I don't know what happened, but the soul of Alta has had a slow painful and death. They seem to be focusing all of their money and energy on things that don't matter. I have seen how they treat their employees... and honestly... it is really off putting. There are always annoying kids running around taking all of the auto belays with their parents nowhere in sight. This is a huge safety concern considering the sport. I've gone to Bouldering Project a few times, even though it is out of the way for me, and it caused me to cancel my Alta membership after seeing the vast differences between the two gyms. It seems they have completely lost sight of the purpose and community that is associated with rock climbing. It's supposed to be a chill relaxed FUN environment where friends can come and hang out, and it definitely used to be. Sadly, I see less and less groups of adult friends come in on the daily basis. I can't help but think it is because of the blatant neglect of important issues from management. This review is NOT about the managers Angelo or Garett, both of them are great managers. But all the other higher up people... yikes. Do better, Deb and Pam. The word of mouth is a powerful tool. And we see how you have been treating our friends and our sport. I saw that Alta was offering a class for beginner climbers. Two hours a class a week for four weeks, I believe, and it was $150. My 6 year old grandson was doing parkour so I thought this was a physical thing he would also enjoy. I went and I bought the shoes, I bought him some climbing pants and he was ready. He shows up and they only put a harness on him, no helmet, and put this little boy, who has never done climbing, on the wall and walk away. He lost his grip and fell flat on his back, my daughter-in-law said the sound that came from him was excruciating for her and my son to listen to. They helped him up + filed an accident report but I had to call them to get my money back. No apology or explanation, either. They did give me my money back, but it is super careless to be told that a child has never climbed before and to do nothing to protect him. They're lucky it wasn't worse. read more

I'm originally from Northern California (where everybody boulders) and It's been hard to find a climbing gym that had Similar problems to that of SLO or Yosemite. Alta Climbing had everything!! My kids love this place. The facility is absolutely gorgeous. Clean, well maintained, and just overall amazing. My son is not an athletic kid, but the confidence he's gained coming here, blows me away. With every visit, I see his strength, agility, and problem solving skills improve. The first Saturday of every month, they turn out the lights, crank up the music, and you climb in the dark. My kids said it was like being at a party! Everyone is encouraging and enthusiastic. They always ask my kids if they had a good time and the owner is super nice. I did take off one star because of the lack of consistency. When we joined, the first several visits, nobody told us we needed to rent equipment and it was just handed to us, so we assumed it was included in our membership. Then one day they started charging us. Same with the headlamps for the night climb. The first time they were free, the next time we were told it was a charge and always has been. Sometimes when we bring a guest on our guest passes, they do the training to make sure you're safe, and sometimes nobody bothers. The staff is mainly teenagers who seem to struggle with the system and don't really seem to know what's going on from visit to visit. But everyone is really nice. I would just like consistency, especially when bringing guests. Definitely recommend it! Great exercise. read more

I've been climbing for a long time, and I've been to gyms all over the country. This one is the best overall. It's big, clean, and modern. They've managed to strike the perfect balance between beginner routes and more advanced climbs. This is a kid-friendly gym, and a great place to take your family. They emphasize safety, without beating you over the head with rules, like some gyms do. There are lots of classes and a well-stocked weight room. Their locker rooms are very large and clean, with free lockers! There's an excellent selection of gear--way more than most gyms have. The owners and staff are friendly and helpful.
