Great food. Very attentive service. Happy hour menu was perfect. A very welcoming place.

Yet another entry in Big Burrito's generally excellent collection of restaurants, not to be confused with Alta Via Pizza in Bakery Square. Same idea, different focus. AVP is excellent, by the way. We have been twice in the last couple of months. Front of House Team was excellent both visits. Our bartender/servers have been gracious and attentive. First visit was carbonara and beet salad; good but not life-changing. Second visit started with Frito Misto. Excellent. Bright, crispy and perfectly finished. The linguine is served with crab meat. I found it to be a glutinous mess. I'm not sure what happened in the kitchen. The mushroom side plate was under seasoned. Our friend who got the spaghetti loved it. Mushroom pasta was excellent with nicely cooked pasta and thorough mushroom taste. Our friends were very pleased with this plate. The chopped salad is perfectly dressed and is completely delicious. It was a treat. My lovely counterpart had the halibut piccata. She commented that it was "slightly overcooked." This is charitable: it was completely hammered. "It had the texture of chicken." The sauce was conspicuous by its sparsity; just not much flavor going on. She also observed that first bite was gritty, as if greens were inadequately cleaned. This dish has enormous potential, but it just wasn't delivered. This dish was palatable only by having the tomatoes on the vine as a side. My lovely counterpart on the Tomatoes on the Vine side: "I didn't love it, but it was necessary." She generally loves this sort of preparation but again, it just wasn't there. Cheesecake was great. Our server was excellent and attentive. Amanda, the assistant manager, was too busy to chat with us even though the house was mostly empty. Our table had two bottles of wine, ordered by the glass instead of by the bottle. The wine pours are staged outside of the bar, so the bartender wasn't involved. We are still at a loss to understand why Amanda was not willing to consider giving us even one of the bottles' worth at the bottle price and why she shut down our waitress when she asked. It seems like a weird hill to plant your flag on, and entirely inconsistent with our more than 30 years experience with Big Burrito. This is the first time we have experienced anything like this in a Big Burrito restaurant; truly bizarre and our poor server was clearly uncomfortable relaying the decision. We hadn't made any observations about the food to her and were having a great time even with kitchen's inconsistency. We might try again at some point: some of the dishes were great and there is clearly potential. read more

We had a private event here yesterday night in the downstairs private room. The private room is pretty spacious, even with their privacy curtain blocking part of it off. The staff was lovely and helpful and did a great job communicating with us. The food itself was pretty good overall. I did think it was a little strange that they served the salad and pasta separately from the entree so I was essentially eating my filet by itself. The tiramisu is fluffy and delicious as always. I would definitely have another private event here! read more

Service was very attentive and friendly, although the Irish accent was a bit odd in an Italian restaurant. Ambience was 1/2 sports bar, 1/2 modestly decorated restaurant. Pasta was ridiculously overpriced for quality that was mediocre at best and served luke-warm.$37 for an entree that I could have cooked better with even a mediocre kitchen Not clear that anyone had ever opened an Italian cookbook. Loved our dinner! We walked in after spending a hot afternoon at Picklesburg. We were not looking our finest, but we were presentable. Ordered beans and greens, caprese, tomatoes and burrata and the crab linguine. Our wait person knew the menu, recited it very well, but his pronunciation of "eye-talien" grated on my nerves! The focaccia was okay, but the olive oil was fantastic! I did ask the wait person, but he did not know the brand, just reporting that it is ordered via Penn Mac. I ordered an aperol spritz as well, it was a nice hefty glass. We will return to try more menu items and maybe suss out the brand of olive oil so I can have it at home! read more

My friend and I met at Alta Via for brunch recently. I made a reservation online and our table was ready upon arrival. On Sundays, they offer a $35 prix fixe brunch which is a great deal, in my opinion. It comes with your choice of juice or cocktail, an appetizer, and entree. I had a Bloody Mary, the Caesar salad (added anchovy), and eggs Benedict with prosciutto. The highlight for me was the Caesar salad. The lowlight for me was the Bloody Mary. It was visibly pleasing but it lacked flavor unfortunately. The rest of our visit was great! I always love the ambiance at Alta Via. Service was good as well! read more

Overall, not very tasty cute restaurant, but the flavors were quite odd. I could praise martini was in Mauldin. The gluten-free pasta is average. The service is good the Frito Misto which is gluten-free with light and delicious. But truly, we feel like they were in this definitely wouldn't go out of my way to go back. read more

Food was spectacular. We ordered the mixed salad, chicken with potatoes, different noodle dishes, and meatballs. Everything was delicious, including the table bread with olive oil and butter. The flavors complemented each other well, and the textures and richness were well balanced. The presentation was also excellent. Each dish was plated with intention, making the food inviting and appealing rather than just thrown together without a thought. Portions were generous as well. Service was welcoming and exceptional. Our waiter answered all of our questions thoroughly, and I appreciated having the option to order either smaller or larger sizes. The interior was upscale, spacious, and quiet, which made for a chill dining experience. I look forward to coming back and will be recommending this place to others. read more

A group of eight of us grabbed a 6 PM reservation before the fateful Steelers playoff game this week, and we really enjoyed ourselves. The restaurant was very well-prepared for a group of our size, even at dinner time, which I found refreshing. My only minor complaint is that I wish our server had come around for refills more often, as I only had one the entire meal. I ordered the crispy potatoes to start, and they were great. They were buttery, crispy, and full of herby and cheesy flavor. For my entrée, I went with the pappardelle. I was absolutely blown away by how good it was. The pasta was perfectly al dente, the meat was incredibly tender, and the flavors blended together perfectly. Days later, I am still thinking about this pasta. I will absolutely be back to try more, no matter how big or small my party is. I highly recommend Alta Via if you're looking for a good meal. read more

Stopped here for a Monday night dinner while in town preparing for a flight the following morning. There is parking nearby via garage, but if possible- and if staying at a hotel, the best thing to do would be taking an Uber here. Darkly lit atmosphere and a upscale feel with a bar, glass windows, and a downstairs area as well. We were sat in a small booth and I ordered an old fashioned to kick things off. Tasted good - no complaints. Upon looking at the menu, there are two prices with their pasta entrees. Our waitress, who did a great job, explained that the smaller price is for a smaller portion that encourages trying two different ones. Say less. I ordered the cacio e Pepe, and the carbonara small entrees- both being top 3 pasta dishes I enjoy. Table bread was served, and the pastas came out shortly after. They both were good, but I found the pasta somewhat dry in the sense the sauce had totally stuck to the al dente noodle and made the whole portion one large sticky pile. Would have liked to have more sauce and maybe a slightly more cooked noodle to combat this. Flavors were good - but the guanciale was somewhat odd and slimy. We passed on dessert and headed out. Would like to come back and would recommend stopping here. read more

I saw the reviews on this place and had to try it. It was packed on a Friday night. We were lucky to snag a seat at the bar. It's perfectly located across the PPG Ice skating rink. We grabbed a bite and headed ice skating. The drinks were so good! I had a lemon drop and it was so delicious. I was also impressed with the short rib pasta. You can taste the love put into making the pasta from scratch. It was perfectly cooked Al dente and tasted so good! I gotta come back for that dish. read more

Alta Via has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. The atmosphere is beautiful, the service is always welcoming, and the food consistently hits every time. We ordered the bucatini and the carbonara, and both were incredible. The bucatini had the perfect balance of flavor, texture, and richness. The sauce clung to every strand and tasted fresh and comforting. My boyfriend had the carbonara, which has become his go-to pasta here. It was creamy, savory, and made exactly the way carbonara should be. These two dishes are honestly our favorites and keep us coming back. We also had the Caesar salad and the chopped salad. Both were refreshing, crisp, and perfectly dressed without being too heavy. Everything tasted high quality and well prepared. For dessert, I had the budino, which was rich, smooth, and the perfect sweet ending to the meal. My boyfriend ordered the gelato and enjoyed it just as much. It was creamy, flavorful, and a great finish after the pasta. Alta Via never disappoints. Whether it is pasta, salads, or dessert, everything feels thoughtful and delicious. Finally tried Alta Via after having tried many other restaurants in the Big Burrito group. Maybe my expectations were a bit high, but I was not overly impressed. We went for lunch on a Saturday - it was pretty empty. The vibe of the restaurant is quaint and slightly modern. We tried the ricotta toast, a sandwich, and a half size pasta dish. The ricotta toast had a char on it that tasted bitter and reminiscent of cigarettes. Did not enjoy that aspect of it, but the ricotta topping was good. I thought it would've been better had the ricotta topping been on the complimentary bread they provided. Chicken parm sandwich was huge and pretty solid. Came with a large side of marinara sauce which was enjoyable. Carbonara was good, not great. The pasta was cooked well but the flavors were a bit lackluster. I do however really appreciate that they offer 1/2 size portions of their pastas at a reasonable price. Our server was very sweet, but the service did feel a little slow considering how empty the restaurant was. Overall, if you're in the area, I think it's a solid restaurant to try but I will probably not return anytime soon. read more

My first time at Alta Via Pizzeria and it was delicious! Loved the cozy vibe of the restaurant too and our server was really nice. I tried the vegan pizza and while the crust was delicious there was not enough cheese on the pizza at all. It was still yummy but a little disappointing for someone who can't have dairy. When I mentioned this to our server they said that wasn't out of the ordinary for the vegan cheese on that pizza. Oh well! Definitely a cool vibe and a good pizza overall. read more

When it comes to homemade pasta and friendly service, this spot set the bar pretty high. I tried every single option my family ordered, and they were all delicious. Even better, they give you practically an entire pan of focaccia bread to start. Our waitress was wonderful, genuinely funny and accommodating. The only thing worth mentioning, is that I did not feel very welcomed by the hostess as she was a bit abrupt and didn't even make eye contact upon arrival or when we left. That said, the food here was stellar, the prices are reasonable, and I love that they took over this spot on Market Square as it is a great location. read more

I usually do not like tuna but this was absolutely delicious. For entrees I had the Orechiette. This was also great. I like that you can decide whether to get the small size or the larger size. I had the most delicious takeout from Alta Via. The seafood arrabiata had a great variety of seafood and paired really well with a small portion of the vodka pasta. The baby artichokes were grilled to perfection (the marks were beautiful!) and were wonderfully accompanied by the lemon aioli and mint salsa crudo. It was also so kind of them to include their complimentary focaccia and dipping sauces--the focaccia was even tastier dipped into my arrabiata sauce. We all really enjoyed our meals and beverages. The food was delicious and they had a decent selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. They even had mocktails made with the zero proof alcohol (someone at our table ordered one and said it was yummy). The service was great and we were even given a caraffe of water when it was clear we were drinking that along with our other beverages fairly quickly. I like the look of the place and it's bigger than I expected it to be. Restrooms were downstairs, but I noticed an elevator when I was down there, so I'm sure accessibility isn't a problem. I had a great experience here! The waitress and the host were very nice. We were also seated promptly which was another plus. I loved how nicely decorated the inside was as well. The ricotta toast was pretty good! I wasn't expecting that combination of flavors but the strawberry adds the right touch of sweetness. The pastas were made really well too! The butternut squash ravioli was made very well, but I just didn't enjoy it because it was sweet. If I liked butternut squash, I would enjoy it more. The rigatoni was delicious too! It was a little al dente for my taste, but otherwise made well! The tiramisu was delicious and the perfect end to my meal! I would come back to try the other pastas on the menu. I went for lunch with some coworkers. We really enjoyed it. We walked in and sat right down. Our server was so nice and helpful. I got the chicken parm sandwich and it was good. I am not a big sauce girl, I don't like when there is too much. So I appreciated that the Sandwich didn't have a lot of sauce cause also it makes it soggy. This is the best spot we ate at on our trip to Pittsburgh! We came here after being quoted a 2 hour wait at another spot and asking shop owners what they recommend. Every single thing we ordered was amazing. They gave us free focaccia which was to die for -- I loved the salted butter/olive oil combination. The meatballs were fine; we loved the Brussels sprouts. The fusilli was incredible. I loved the sauce and the cheese in it. The restaurant was quiet enough that we could have a conversation and our server was attentive. Another delicious Italian spot in the city. I liked the variety on the menu, as there were multiple dishes I wanted to try! The meatballs and sauce had great flavor, albeit they were a little cold. Nevertheless, flavor profile was on point and the ricotta made for a delectable bite. The fig toast was a let down. The bread was charred and overpowered the ricotta and figs. Won't get this again. My duck was excellent! Crispy skin and so tender. And the gnocchi were fantastic. Duck, fig, gnocchi, on one fork? Yes, please! My wife loved her cacio e pepe, so much so she finished her plate... and didn't share much. Service was ok. We weren't greeted for quite a while after we sat while everyone else was served around us. Omg! I absolutely love the consistency of this place. I had never tried Alta Via orecchiette before and one day I tried it and never stopped trying it. I don't even need to look at the menu anymore. Since trying this less than a year ago I've had this at least five times and it's the same quality each time. The sweet and savory from the well seasoned chicken and the sweet from the currants are a match made in heaven. I love the service. The staff are pleasant and attentive. The ambiance is a vibe as it almost doesn't feel like Market Square. This is now on my list of my go to lunches in downtown Pittsburgh. read more

Alta Via is a solid Italian spot in Market Square with quality food and a classy vibe! We went for a late lunch so there weren't a ton of people around, but I can imagine it gets busy in the evenings with an ambience that makes it perfect for a date night or nice night out with friends/family! We started off with the fritto misto and Caesar salad, both of which I enjoyed. I liked that the fritto misto wasn't heavily breaded/fried and the lemon sauce complimented it well, while the Ceasar salad was a really good Caesar salad! For mains, I got the orecchiette while my husband got the fusilli. I really enjoyed the sauce on my pasta as well as the bits of currents and butternut squash, and my husband easily finished his dish! Overall, we enjoyed our meal and look toward to returning and trying more, whether that be here or at their Fox Chapel location! read more

Our dishes were delicious... tastefully seasoned and well balanced. I ordered a half order of the ravioli... And it was enough for lunch...but next time, because I lived in so much, I'd get a full order! The wait staff was attentive and got our orders correct. The Scarlet Vetter says..... I was in Pittsburgh for a work conference and waiting for my dinner party to arrive at this lovely restaurant in the market square. I sat at the bar to wait, and decided to have a delicious glass of wine and an appetizer--The Fritto Misto. The seafood was perfectly done and the bartender brought me some divine bread and oil to boot. This establishment also prepares a wonderful special dinner for larger parties. Total 3 star experience from start to finish. And the sad part was the food wasn't all that bad, although the value wasn't there. The service left a lot to be desired. Our table of 4 arrived at 7:30 on a Tuesday night. The general impression right from the start was that we were welcome as long as we didn't linger. The bread basket and amalgam of olive oil and butter they served with it was forgettable. Fritto Misto was light and good, but the tiny portion was laughable. Meatballs okay. Burrata and its accompaniments fresh and good. Our entrees arrived before we were finished with the apps. Two runners brought them and had no idea where to put them. There were empty plates on the tables, but the runners had no interest in clearing them away. My half order of pasta with kale and sausage was good. My husband's pasta with short rib ragu would have been excellent, but it really needed a dusting of parmesan cheese and strangely (for an "Italian" restaurant) no one was on hand to offer one. The best dish of the night was the caesar salad - such beautiful sweetness from the lettuce, and the breadcrumbs instead of croutons worked beautifully. Unfortunately, staff was hovering to take our plates long before we were finished. Our server reluctantly offered us a dessert menu. Desserts were excellent - one of the best creme brulee's I have ever had! But neither the server or the bartender she had to fetch had any clue what the chinato on their menu actually looked like! It was embarrassing - or should have been - for them. Mostly they just looked like they wanted to go home. Decor and vibe was corporate. Supposedly this is where everyone in Pittsburgh goes to dress up a little and celebrate. What a disappointment to receive such lackluster service. And it wasn't cheap! Would not recommend. read more

Overall a nice restaurant located in downtown in the market square, therefore easy to walk from the hotels. Tried their dinner menu, overall tasty although salmon was quite salty. A beautifully decorated restaurant, walking distance from our hotel. Stopped in during lunch hour to grab a quick bit and drinks. We were able to snag a seat at the bar. We ordered, Tuna Tartare and Fritto Misto. Both were delicious! The tartare had good flavor yet still light. The bread however that was served with it was a little too charred and oddly salty. The Fritto Misto was one of the best I've had, very light with the batter which is preferred. Portion was small, as expected given we ordered from the lunch menu. The bar service however, has an opportunity. We were not greeted with "hi", "hello" or even a smile. The bartender approached us with "what would you like to drink". So we ordered. No complaint on drinks. The drinks were prepared and delivered in front of us, no ask of ordering (we were ready to order). No eye contact. They went to attend making more drinks. In fact, we had to flag the bartender down at some point to place our order. And again, no apology, or "yes, what would you like". Just stood there waiting for us to say something. Greeting and acknowledging customer makes a long impression. We almost wanted to leave based on the initial experience, given we felt the bartender didn't want to serve us.
