Dr. Buddy is an angel! She was the only vet that didn't immediately tell me to put my dog down when he hurt his back around 8 years ago. She treated him with an amount of care that makes it obvious how much she really loves these animals. I send everyone to Alta Vista for affordable veterinary services from a great staff. Every employee that I have encountered there over the years has been so friendly, empathetic, and responsive to needs that it's almost mind blowing. My pup is turning 17 at the end of the month and has been living his best, most bougie, spoiled af life (and has even received table side service from a Michelin star chef ) thanks to Alta Vista and Dr. Buddy. I have been taking my cats to Dr. Budde since May of 2006, almost 20 years. Not once have I ever considered another vet. Dr. Budde always goes above and beyond. She is conscientious, extremely knowledgeable, and does extensive research to offer every available treatment option whenever a health situation arises. Some reviewers have complained that Dr. Budde likes to talk. I LIKE the fact that she likes to talk. She keeps you informed of what is happening with your pet, in great detail. This is what the best doctors do. They talk to you. I value this as much as I value the talk time I have with my own physician. It's a human touch that is vitally important. I can't speak to the quality of the vet here, because you'll actually need to be seen first! I scheduled by phone a neuter for my kitten on the recommendation of my home-visit vet as her tech works here, and they told me my appointment for a pre-exam was for today, so I blocked the time out on my calendar and took time off work, and drove half an hour, but when I showed up, they didn't have me in the schedule and had in fact scheduled me for the following week. They not only did not acknowledge their mistake, they didn't apologise and tried to push the error onto me. First of all, there's no follow-up by email or text to tell you when your appointment is. The receptionist told me they usually call with a reminder, but how was I supposed to know that as a first time patient with a Monday appointment, especially if they never sent me any form of appointment confirmation, AND they didn't tell me there would be a reminder call? I blocked the time out in my schedule WHILE THE PERSON WHO ANSWERED THE PHONE SCHEDULED IT WITH ME as that was the ONLY TIME I had any indication of when my appointment would be. The only option I was given was to wait an hour+ to be seen after all other appointments or to drive an hour round trip the following week. No thanks! I went back to work, they wasted my time. I can't trust the health of my pet to a clinic that can't even get an appointment date correct, communicate with a client, or show basic respect. How can I trust them with prescriptions, surgeries, or anything else? I immediately scheduled my kitten's neuter with Warm Springs Pet Hospital after conferring with my home-visit vet. Today was my first visit. All the associates I met with were both extremely friendly and helpful. Dr. Budde is a no BS Doctor. She was very straight forward and honest. I have had good vets in my history of animal rescue, and Dr. Budde rates at the top. She says what needs to be said. Her heart is with the animals that she sees. Again this was my first visit with a rescue and I feel I made a friend with Dr. Budde. Her office is small but everyone i came in contact with, had only positive responses. I scheduled an appointment for my dog on recommendation to another vet for his dental work. From the moment I walked in the lady at the front desk had her head down and took forever to acknowledge me. With the knowledge that I have to give anxiety medication to my dog they will make you wait weeks for an appointment and make sure you waste 20 minutes in the waiting room with paperwork you could have already had finished( including sending emails noone told me this when scheduling the appointment) making sure your dog is as anxious as possible. I don't find a reason to give money to people that will make you feel like your dog is a product only encouraging a bad experience. It's unfortunate that my dog still needs care, that's how uncomfortable getting passed the front desk is. Edit: They were very upset about me calling out the bad energy and walking out before they could overcharge me. I was writing this review in their parking lot for maybe 20 minutes and they came out to kick me out of the parking lot. They never tried to remedy the situation which I find as unprofessional as it gets. I literally drove a few blocks down and found a different vet that got him scheduled quickly and updated his paperwork. Dr. Budde and Jen are at Alta Vista. My dog had a teeth cleaning yesterday and I am a pet mommy who worries to the extreme because I had a previous pet who had a lot of health issues, and went through traumatizing experiences with different veterinarians, who treated him badly or hurt him in a procedure. However, Jen gave me her personal phone number and texted me to reassure me that my dog will be okay, because she knew how afraid I was. Two of my GSD's got in a fight and one needed some stitch work on the back of his neck. This was last Sunday. Most vets are closed. So I went to 24/7 MedVet in San Jose. The estimate was $1500!! Plus they were 3 hours behind schedule! I called Alta Vista in Hayward and they said they could take me in. After I sent them pixs of the injury, they quoted me no more than $900. I never write reviews but I had to for this run down place. I took my dog here for the first time to get a wellness exam to get neutered, as they accept the $100 neuter voucher. I've been to multiple vets and this is the WORST. I was running 5-10 minutes late to appointment, called to make sure it was okay to be a little late. Front desk staff put me on hold for over 10 minutes, I ended up hanging up, called them back for staff to ask me to be put on hold again, tried to ask if it was okay to be a little late, staff interrupted me in the middle of me asking question and put me on hold anyways.... I show up to appointment a little late, it was fine, whatever. Once I enter the vet with my dog, there's multiple dogs screaming yelping whining crying hella loud from the back filling up the whole vet with cries causing my dog to freak out. Front desk staff didn't even greet me for about 5-10 minutes after walking in. Finally they give me paperwork to fill out which takes another 15 minutes or so. Whole time I'm filling out paperwork, my dog is scared shitless from hearing all the whining and crying from other dogs. After I give them paperwork, they had me waiting another 20 minutes. For the wellness exam, my dog has social anxiety so I asked if I can be in the room while they do it and they said no. My dogs usual vet in Oakland lets me in room for wellness exam so I thought that was sus. They finally take my dog in the back for exam and all I hear is him whining crying yelping smh if you want a smooth experience for your pet, this vet is not it. After what I experienced, I will not be taking my dog back here for the $100 neuter voucher I originally planned. read more

Honestly, I expected better from this clinic. The only reason why I chose this clinic because it was few blocks away from my home and it was very convenient. It is too bad this vet clinic really runs deep dirty. They always quote you with so many additional ridiculous fees upfront. Money is all they care about. One of my cat always get, on average, $500-$700 bill for every vet visit because there is always "more tests or diagnostics" needed. They pressure these additional tests on me and try to make me feel bad if I decline the additional tests. Even the receptionists does not look very happy either. I often feel rushed too. You can get the vibe if a business really be like that. I really dodged the bullet on this one. My other cat started symptoms of sneezing, coughing and mild lethargy for few days. I called Alta Vista and requested for an appointment. The receptionist quoted that I should pay total of $1,500 including bloodwork, diagnostics, exam and etc. I was flabbergasted! I knew they were trying to scam me. So my friend referred me to another vet clinic, and then they immediately took my cat in. Turns out it was just allergies, and I only paid $146! I was so shocked by how wonderful my experience at the another vet, because they showed authentic care to my cat. They even involved me in every process too. Definitely avoid this place if you prefer vets that actually cares about your pet's health first, rather than slapping all the price quote in your face like a desperate salesman. read more

We decided to interview a new vet for our dog and decided to give Alta Vista a shot despite being across the bay as they came highly recommended by one of our friends. Making an appointment was easy enough and the staff here seemed helpful but the issue I had was with the vet herself. I was looking for a collaborative practice where we could lay out options and decide the right approach and path for our dog. This practice was clearly her way or the highway. She in so many words projected that we did not care about our dog as much as she does (ridiculous right?), and she, herself was the saint and savior to all animals. Then she went way out of line and inquired to where we lived and what type of property we resided on. She found out that we came from across the bay and for whatever reason needed to explain to me that her property was bigger and larger, and that people on my side of the bay needed her services but it was only her and there was only so many animals she could treat. Red flags everywhere. They followed up with an invoice that addressed NOTHING we discussed. Turns out our dog is fine, this vet ruined our day, and we had nothing to worry about. Went in for a $200 checkup and was proposed with a $1,318.69 proposal that did not address the initial issue I wanted to resolve. If you're considering a vet, you and your pet deserve better. Go ANYWHERE else. read more

Isabelle, front desk staff, has extremely poor customer service skills. My mother and I called multiple times prior to my cat's follow up appt to check if there would be any charges. We both were told no. I arrive to the appt and Isabelle presented me a bill--to which I explained I was not informed of this. She went on to say "if your cat is scheduled with the doctor, then you will be charged." I questioned why wasn't that disclosed to me or my mom over the phone? She then shows me her notes and points to scribbles and says "someone went over the price with you" I asked who I spoke to over the phone, of course she didn't know. I then explained that it's fair to ask for transparency and thats not the first time I received a surprise bill. On the first visit she (isabelle) offered to email me the estimates for the aftercare for my cat's surgery, however, never received the email and was presented a $300 bill the day of the surgery. Isabelle took no accountability for her lack of follow through and replied "well we are short staff and if we don't get to things, we don't get to things. And you could have called to check on the prices I don't know what to tell you" How is it now my fault that I'm unaware of potential charges when I call and I'm told there won't be a charge or when Isabelle offers to email me, but doesn't? I told Isabelle that a simple apology and some understanding would have been just fine. I have several suggestions on how they can improve, however, the main suggestion I have is ---- be transparent about your charges. Unfortunately I will not be returning to that vet because of the lack of compassion and understanding from front desk staff. read more

This review is LONG overdue. I would highly recommend Alta Vista to any pet parents out there. If you have yet to make a vet clinic your dogs primary vet hospital, please consider Alta Vista. I took my dog to Alta Vista for the first time when i was looking for a hospital to spay her. Dr. Budde and her staff are a dream! They are communicative, attentive and so very thoughtful. After her surgery they performed follow up calls to see how she was doing and if we had any questions or needed any additional support. Because of their service we decided to make my boyfriend's family dog to the clinic. For those of you who are curious, he is a 14 years old Maltese who is not fixed. Earlier this year, we noticed that his face was getting swollen and that it was kind of hard for him to open his eyes. This caused us panic and we immediately called Alta Vista. They were able to see him within that week. He ended up having apical periodontitis, which is a severe case of root rot. Once we were informed of his diagnosis, Dr. Budde clearly laid out our options. After discussing, we decided to proceed with surgery (even though we didn't have pet insurance). Considering his age and health, we were extremely nervous to go through with this, but we decided that it was well worth it! To our luck, the surgery went well and his is happy and healthy! Like my dogs spay surgery, the staff continued to check in on my boyfriend's family dog and went out of their way to help us whenever we needed help or had any questions during his healing. Thank you so much for all your help and service to our fur babies Alta Vista! Side note, if you don't already, please take the time to brush your dogs teeth! If we brush our teeth everyday, so should your dog! Bad dental hygiene can cause so much health issues in dogs, so by dedicating time into taking care of your dogs dental health, you are not only extending their life but you are saving a lot of money in the long run! The staff was wonderful...5 stars to them. Zero stars for this veterinarian. Why, you ask? I brought my 3-year-old dog here, about a year ago, for a bump that it appeared on her leg. I didn't know where it came from and thought maybe it was an infected nip from our other dog while playing. The bump started out very small and very quickly got very big and gross on our skinny little short-haired dog's leg. When we came in the staff was very nice and our dog was seen for an exam. The veterinarian's recommendation was a complete shock to me. I can only imagine she was operating from the assumption that it was a cancerous bump and her recommendation was either biopsy or amputation followed by biopsy. She strongly suggested going for amputation directly because it would be cheaper than doing two surgical procedures, one for the biopsy and another for amputation. I was in complete shock. I went for a second opinion and ended up doing a lumpectomy and biopsy, which came back negative for cancer. Fast forward lots of different specialist fees and tons of money for diagnosis... we learned that my dog had lymphoma. I won't go into all the details of her treatment at other places because the care she received at the other places was excellent, even though there was not a cure in her future. However, I would have been so horrified and guilty feeling, had I listened to this veterinarian's recommendation and amputated my poor dog's leg, only to find out later that would have been completely unnecessary and would have helped nothing whatsoever. I'm definitely glad I did not follow her recommendations and this veterinarian's "cut first ask questions later" mentality. If I had, my dog's quality of life would have been so horrible for her last year on this Earth. If any veterinarian recommends amputation first thing and you have any doubts whatsoever, please get a second opinion. I will never return to this vet or recommend anyone bring their beloved pet here. read more

I would give this place 0 stars if I could. Took my dog in today because she had an allergy reaction. They ended up charging 58 dollars (observation and out patient care medium)extra for taking dog to the back and supposedly having somebody looking at her after the injections were provided, bullshit because I heard my dog winning and she only does it when she is alone. I never left the place, vet insisted on me going home and dropping my other two dogs while Dasha would stay there with them, which I never did. After 10 or 15 minutes I requested to see Dasha. Her reaction was 95% gone. So if they charge 58 dollars for 15 minutes imagine if I would have left the place how much more they would have charged. So bad I can't trust vets in Hayward this is the second time this happens. I don't care about the money. I care about honesty and vets today or at least this vet today doesn't know what that is. Don't mind driving all the way to Pacifica to AllCare Vet Hospital Miss the people there and specially the honesty of the vet. Well they ended up reimbursing 28 dollars. The 30 dollars they kept it because on my rush to get Dasha checked I signed ok on the initial paperwork they gave me. Which let me explained how it happened: they took Dasha to the back while I was waiting for the paperwork the they came out I told me Dasha was getting worse and they needed to proceed which of course I said yes. I have brought my dogs to Alta Vista for the past 15 years. They received excellent care from Dr. Budde. Dr. Budde sometimes can be very blunt, like when she told me if I didn't want to keep the cone on my blind dog who had eye ulcers (because she didn't like it), it was okay she could enucleate her eyes. she was being sarcastic but I got the point and put the cone on her. Not everyone likes this approach to care, but my dogs love her. My older dog had multiple health problems and without Dr. Budde she would not have survived as long as she did. I have found her office staff to be helpful and caring as well. In terms of pricing, she offers a lot of options which you can refuse and honestly I have gone to other vets whose prices are the same if not higher. read more

I would give this Alta Vista 5 stars and here's the reason why I didn't. I had an appointment at 6pm. I downloaded and filled out all the forms beforehand to speed up the process. I arrive 5 minutes before my appointment. 45 minutes rolls around and I am still waiting. THAT is the only reason, they didn't get 5 stars. But as for the experience once they finally got to see my pup, it was great. They treated and handled my pup great great. They are all friendly. They loved Kona and Kona loved them. Dr. Budde was straight to the point and I like that. They treated Kona like he was their own. But let's see how efficient they are with their time for his next appointment. No one was able to help me with my dog and give me a diagnosis, not to mention they all spent thousands of money on all of their tests. The moment I brought Chewy (my dog) to Dr. Buddy she diagnosed him within minutes with out any expensive tests. She's so gifted with knowledge. She has changed Chewy's life forever and I am so grateful. He was completely bald, itchy, sick, and half dying. It's been about a year since I took him into her and wow the difference. He's like a puppy with his hair fully back, he's no longer super itchy. She has single handily changed his and my life forever. Dr Budde and her dedicated team of vet techs provide amazing care. Dr Budde will tell you everything you need to know about what's going on with your pet's health, and also a lot of other stuff. Better to have too much information than too little! You'll always be told what your options are and how much each costs. One thing to be aware of: Appointment times fall behind schedule toward the end of the day - you may end up waiting up to 45 minutes for your visit.
