Individual size Ortolana Pizza with added pepperoni
    Mom P.

We ordered 5 baked, individual-size pizzas online to take home for a family celebration. They survived the 20 min ride home quite well. The flavors are incredibly fresh and the sauce is the best I've ever had. My greatest praise is for the gluten-free pizza and the attention to preparing it safely. It came in its own baking pan, and the box was clearly marked with a sticker that included the crust ingredients. This attention to detail and safety is hard to find. Our daughters' favorite is the Margherita pizza. Another had the Ortolana with pepperoni. With this praise comes a few suggestions. It would be helpful to have the size of the pizza listed in the online menu (seems to be about 9" for regular crust and 10" for gluten-free). It's listed on the hone page, but not on the online ordering page. There is a larger family size available, but no idea if gluten-free crust comes in the larger size. For the price, I thought the gluten-free pizza was going to be the family size. I understand the need for the price point considering the crust is imported from Italy -- it's just nice to have that additional info ahead of time. I didn't see any info on the menu noting whether any toppings are gluten-free, but I'm sure a phone call would take care of that. We look forward to returning and trying the take-and-bake option in the future.

    Incredible Gluten Free Pizza!

Excellent, authentic Italian pizza. This is not Pizza Hut or dominos pizza. This is for those people who truly know and love this style of Italian pizza. The gluten free pizza was outstanding. Crust was imported from Italy. Assembled it at home per the instructions given and cooked it at 450° for about 10 minutes. Crispy crust, tangy Italian tomatoes and delicious creamy cheeses. Probably the best GF pizza option we've had in the states. The family members who had the regular wheat crust raved about it as well.

One bite of the pizza and wait I don't remember taking a flight to Italy. It's authentic, the crust is imported from Italy and you know their flour is better. The sauce and cheese and toppings are so flavorful. We're already planning our next visit. Pictured is the personal size that was perfect for 2 ladies because of course we had to save room for the lemon basil gelato. Our pizza had eggplant (I don't remember eggplant tasting so good), yellow peppers, onions, capers and provola.

This time I got a two-pack of huge (about 18 inches by 12 inches) poofy ones called taboons - $5 for the two of them and each weighed about a pound. They're very good plain, with olive oil and maybe a bit of flaky sea salt and/or rosemary, with butter, or in sandwiches and pizzas. The listed ingredients are flour, water, milk, sugar, salt, and yeast - no junk and they taste neither sweet nor salty. Plus, if you've not been here, it will be a fun place to explore.

As far as meats they carry all sorts of dried salamis including Hungarian, Romanian such as Sibiu, Polish kabanos sausage and many other dried or smoked meats some that I've never seen before. Lots of canned stuff as well, if you're into making stuffed cabbage they have a good variety of canned cabbage and grape leaves. I'm Romanian but I grew up with a variety of products I mentioned above from all over that region. The service: I would've given them 5 stars, the only reason I took a star away is because of the service, the girl at the counter seemed to be mostly clueless when I asked her to give me some information about a few products. Her English was horrific but that's fine it didn't bother me. Also I think we've gotten used to deal with bigger businesses where they train their employees to behave courteously, she was on the phone yelling in Serbian a good part of the time when I asked her a few questions she talked to me like I was there kind of bugging her phone conversation which I didn't think was very professional. Overall don't let that stop you from visiting this place, if you grew up in the Balkans region or E.Europe in general you will find something that will bring back memories for sure.

They added an enclosed outdoor seating area, Thats lets you enjoy the breeze or sun, but protects you from the rain. It used to be a tent, so this is definitely nicer. My wife and I were seated immediately. The server quickly brought us water and garlic bread. I really like that they give you 5 fairly big pieces of garlic bread for only two people. Nice touch. We were not in a hurry and couldn't decide what we wanted so we started with the calamari salad. $29, but it's huge and chock full of those calamari guys. Lettuce is always crisp and has everything I like in it (olives, eggs, carrots, artichoke, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and romaine lettuce). We were almost full just from the salad alone. I ordered a grouper sandwich (not fried), and my lovely wife ordered the Scottish salmon plate, which comes with potatoes and grilled vegetables. My sandwich came with coleslaw and fresh cut fries. They switched to fresh cut since my last visit, and this was an upgrade. My sandwich was great, and huge too. Could not finish it. Wife's meal was a humongous slab of salmon. The veggies now come on a smaller plate, but that's okay, given the size of the fish. Service was a tad slow, but like I said, we weren't in any hurry. Total tab was $100, with tax and that pesky 3% service fee. I really enjoyed the food and the ambiance. First sandwich was a custom sub sandwich of turkey, Genoa salami, and rosemary ham with cheese, tomatoes, vinegar/oil, and Italian spices. How a sandwich could taste funny is beyond me, but it did. The meat tasted old and was flavorless. It was pre-cut, not freshly cut meat, so who knows how long it had been sitting out in the counter. The bread was stale, could have broke windows with it. They barely put any meat on it (not that I would have wanted more), the sandwich was all bread. No Italian herbs on sandwich. And the icing on the cake, instead of putting a nice, fresh vinegar and oil/sub oil on the sandwich, I was given a two ounce little package of some generic vinegar and oil that was pre-fabricated by some wholesale company, which also tasted really off. The second regrettable purchase was an Italian sausage sandwich. That too was horrendous. The sausage itself had a funny, off taste, not a nice blend of seasonings. And not that I would have wanted more, but the Italian sausage was old and shriveled, so it was like a child-size portion. I asked for some red sauce on the side, let's just say Ragu would have been better, and that's not saying much. To add further insult to injury, the bun was stale. Also got some Nutella butter cookies that they farm in from D'Amatos that is in the city. I have been in D'Amatos and I love their cookies. With that said, these D'Amato cookies were stale/also tasted off. The tip-off should have been the fact that they must have had fifty or more packaged D'Amatos cookies on their shelf. They are bumping $10.00 for around maybe 12 cookies, so they obviously don't sell all that quickly, turn stale, and there you have it. Also weird vibe in there. The employees (including the Rubino son who is always in the deli area) are not friendly at all. I might be a little bit more forgiving if the employees/owner were nice but they are just really indifferent and very unfriendly (especially the owner). Very unfortunate. Sandwiches from Subway would have been better.

Mark Kurlansky It is my mission while I am residing in the northwest Chicago suburbs to submerse myself in the cultural treasure trove around me and experience as much as I can, as fast as I can. Finding the best and most authentic international groceries (and conversing with the owners and patrons inside) is one of the best means to do this, I have found. On my way to Assi (a Korean grocery), I saw the Zander Import Groceries sign with the curious winged lion. "Another time," I thought. But, it ate at me while I was shopping at Assi. So, I read a few Yelp reviews in the parking lot and decided to endure the six o'clock traffic on Milwaukee Ave and drive back there. The reviews said bread and pickles, try the bread and pickles. That was the mission. I believe it not chance that Zander was grinding fresh Turkish Coffee beans for another customer as I walked in. The smell was inviting and immediately perked me up. Now I know I'll come back when I have coffee drinking guests to entertain. There are plenty of good Indian, Pakistani, and Persian stores within a few miles of Zander Import Groceries, but Zander earns his relevance due to certain specific Assyrian goods he offers. The breads are acquired from bakeries in Skokie and Chicago, and the quality is good. The lavash was particularly nice, but the heavily floured crust left me wanting some of that coffee to wash it down. The Assyrian bread had a great bite and reminded me of a doughnut without sugar. (Does that make sense?) A kind gentleman patron directed me to a spicy homemade pickle of cabbage, carrot, and spices. I must say, it was delicious and I hope my husband loves it as much as I do. Zander also had some imported pickles and olives which looked fascinating. There were other staples, too, as you can see from my photos. This shop is definitely needed and earns its place with some unique offerings. I enjoyed my pickles and bread, and will have what is left of them to accompany an eggplant dish I am making tomorrow night. Brittney Tun Food Writer and Culinary Enthusiast
