I had eagerly followed Alter House's progress on Facebook as they shared their preparations before opening. While I no longer live in the area, I was excited to try it when I visited my family. I was there in October to celebrate my mother's birthday and I was disappointed in the experience. The new started with gluten free rolls. I try to have an open mind about gluten free items, but these rolls had the pitfalls of traditional gluten free items. They were incredibly dense and bland. I had the Spinach & Pomegranate salad as my appetizer, and that was very good. For my main, I had the king crab butternut & gnocchi, sans mushrooms. I was disappointed in the sauce. I had thought the sauce was going to be a more rich, cream based sauce. While a large serving, I was left wanting more because I did not feel satiated. As a side dish I had the blue corn cornbread. It was served hot in a cast iron skillet, topped with butter. It was delicious. For my dessert I had the apple crisp. It was good, but the cinnamon ice cream was filled with ice crystals. My mother had one of the special desserts, which was a compressed apple. The compressed apple was different texture than I expected. I thought it would be similar to a baked apple but instead it was more dense (as makes sense since it was compressed). The apple was sweet, and the ice cream was delicious- no ice crystals. We did not have a great experience trying to pay. After receiving our check, it took over seven minutes for the waitress to come back to run the card, and it was evident that we were done and trying to leave. It then took another ten minutes to process the payment, as we used a gift card and credit card and the waitress did not realize this and processed the cards incorrectly. Overall, I was disappointed in my experience. The food was expensive and underperformed. I understand that farm-to-table/local sourcing is more expensive; however I have eaten at many other farm-to-table places that were better priced and had a better quality. This is a place to go and be. The food is amazing..fresh as could be. The appetizer, we had seasonal crostini with burrata cheese and tomato chutney. We thought it was a warm appetizer but it was cold, but the flavors burst in your mouth. I had the Caesar salad. It had an anchovy crumble and a mixture of fresh evoo, garden greens and garlic dressing. I couldn't get enough of it. The crumble made the salad. My husband had the prime burger. He took his first bite and said wow! I had the steak frites over pomme frites, Stilton butter on the steak and green pepper corn Demi. The pomme frites were yummers. Especially amazing soaked in the Demi glaze. The dessert was a chocolate cake with ganache frosting and local Manning's vanilla ice cream. Paired amazingly. Also had a piece of cheesecake with lemon glaze. Lemon glaze was a little tarte but hey it's lemon. The atmosphere is pleasant. Cool, modern decor. Well lite bar that is the center piece of the restaurant. Waitress was attentive and patient and wonderful. Hope to get her again. She even brought over the bottle of moscato that we were having to show us what brand. Topped our drinks off often. Masks required, though their were some that forgot. but that's not the establishment's fault. I would have told them to put their masks on before the staff. After people left their dinner table, staff promptly cleaned and sprayed table and seats down. Will definitely be coming back...and bringing my sister. Reservations a must for weekends read more

A new restaurant on the scene here in NEPA and the Abingtons that is sure to not disappoint! The food is delicious and priced right. The staff is attentive and the ambiance is fantastic. I really noticed every small detail that was put into this restaurant and the food. Would recommend for a date night or night out for something new and special. Worst food period! Pork chop was way under cooked and the sea bass my wife had was more like a under cooked sea guppy. I have been here a few times, cocktails are great and the bartender also does a good job with mocktails. If you like octopus, the grilled octopus with romesco sauce was great, the octopus was cooked well, very tender and the sauce that came with it pairs well. Although their Club Diane was good, I have had better somewhere else but the steak was prepared well and sauce is tasty. The fries with the lump crab and Brie cream was also tasty, the saltiness of the fries goes well with the creaminess of the brie cream sauce and a hint of sweetness comes through from the crab. The burger was a bit of a let down, and if you come here, I don't recommend getting a burger though, try the other entree they have on the menu or daily specials. This is not the place to get a burger if you are craving for one. To end the meal, the day we went, the choices for desserts was limited and the ones we got (cheesecake and chocolate cake) was just okay. read more

If you haven't been here you are missing out. If you are looking for a spot that pays attention to great detail, fabulous tasting food...farm to table, (I am talking here from a local farm in PA then you need to visit Alter House. You won't need to drive out to Pocono, Wilkes Barre, or Scranton-- it's right here in Clark Summit. A hidden gem for sure. Their bar is huge and the bar top is gorgeous, you can sit there and watch the magic in the kitchen happen. The powder room is immaculate and reminds me of one you will find in Vegas-- beautiful for sure! Service is bar none, we hope you get lucky and got Hayden but everyone else we interacted with was also superb. We had brunch, both girls got Steak and Eggs, hubby got a Vegi skillet with extra bacon, I got Salmon with arugula. The only thing I regretted was not having my self saucing chocolate cake first!! A must at every visit. I look forward to coming back to try their Happy Hour menu. I cannot say enough good things about my experience at the alter house. The service we received was top-notch. From the second we walked in, to the second we left, we felt like royalty and family all at the same time. The food is exquisite, the bar really has what you want and need. You can taste how fresh everything is, it feels like everything was grown in the back and put together in the kitchen while you waited. The Cook's really have a grasp on how to blend these different flavors and turn them into artwork on your plate. I almost didn't want to eat it oh, but I did LOL. Went to Sunday brunch- our first visit to the restaurant after having been talking about it for a while. We were not disappointed. The drinks were amazing. We shared the French toast special which was excellent- not too heavy. We also split the house flat bread and Brie and crab fries. I can't decide which was my favorite- all delicious and different. Service was terrible and the food was disappointing. The server spent more time and focused on the other tables despite us being seated and greeted first. We ordered two steak frites which were 42$ each, two cocktails and the crostini small plate. The bartender did a fantastic job on both drinks, they were phenomenal ($11 & $10), and the crostini ($9) was good as well. The steak frites, 42$ each mind you, reminded me of something that would come from the $10 TGI Fridays menu. I was so disappointed in the steak I focused more on the salad that came with it and the potato chip strips served underneath it. For a total of $145.00 (with tip) it was severely over priced for the quality of food and service that were received. We were looking for a new spot to frequent and tell our friends about, but unfortunately the Alter House will not be it. read more

Four of us decided to try out the Alter House as it had been recommended for good food. The food was not good but great!! Best pork chop I ever had. All four of us had different meals that were so good we each shared our meals, which we rarely do. The service was outstanding and very attentive. They obviously have a professional chef as reflected by the food. If you want great food and great service give the Alter House a shot. I'm glad we did and we'll be back. Are you interested in a well-thought-out eclectic drink menu with an incredible wine list? Happy hour specials are inexpensive but not lacking in size or flavor ! The entrees have been flavorful, beautifully plated and well thought out with the drink specials. Disappointing My husband and I came here for a special dinner because we had heard it was so wonderful. We were very disappointed. First are the things that I want to mention but did not take into account for my rating: Service was very slow and inattentive. We waited at least 20 minutes for our initial drinks and for a refill. I know help is hard to find these days and I think the waitress was doing her very best, but it was crowded and she had too many tables. My husband says the men's room was a mess--the trash had not been emptied and there were paper towels all over the floor. It was very noisy. The table next to us had a baby and at one point I could see by the baby's face that she was screaming, but I could not hear her at all. Now for the stuff I did take into account: The food was overall marginal. We had the crab and Brie fries and and eggplant special for an appetizer. The crab mixture was good, but did not belong on the fries, which were overcooked and had a very strong taste that overwhelmed the more delicate flavor of the topping. The eggplant had very little sauce with it so we put the crab on the eggplant and it was pretty good. I would suggest serving French bread or something like it with the crab and Brie. My husband had a Caesar salad that he reported was one of the worst he had ever had. He said it did not appear to actually BE a Caesar salad. There was no romaine, no identifiable cheese, no anchovies, no croutons and very little dressing. He had the strip steak for his entree. I tried it and it was not a good piece of meat. I know the price of meet has gone up, but a $49 steak should be decent. It was tough, fatty, and full of tendons. I did not care for the Cajun seasoning on it, but that is a personal preference. He said vegetable mixture was soggy and overcooked. I had the pasta special which was a mushroom cappelletti. I asked if is was vegetarian and she said it was but I could add chicken ,shrimp or salmon, so I had shrimp added. What I got was a bowl of what appeared to be supermarket tortellini with four half shrimp floating in a clear, flavorless broth. The shrimp did not work with the dish at all; beef may have worked, but overall the dish was just plain bland and boring. My niece is vegan and she makes recipes for us all the time that are tasty and interesting, so it was not lack of protein that made it bad. It was lack of ingredients and imagination. There was no salt and pepper on the table. For desert we had the key lime tart and dessert board. I would give dessert a solid three stars. It did not wow us, but it was good. You cannot go wrong with Mannings ice cream. The coffee I give four stars. I read this review to my husband before I posted it. He said I was kinder than he would have been. read more

A diamond in the rough! Found this gem en route to Ithaca. Staff was super friendly and food was fresh and delicious. Grilled pork chop was crispy on outside but juicy inside. My wife had the filet and was thrilled that MR was actually MR. And my daughter loved her burger. The only reason this is not 5 star is that they close on the early side - we barely made it before they closed at 7pm. Hope to visit again soon. read more

Came here while visiting the area from Los Angeles. Was excited to try this hot new restaurant. Pros Service was excellent! Staff was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. They hired the right people! The decor is fresh, bright and modern. Menu is very creative and uses local ingredients. Excellent cocktail and wine list. Lots of parking. Nice vibe inside. Cons The cocktails we ordered were flat tasting. It was as though something important was missing. I've had better mocktails. While the wine list is very well curated, the by the glass offerings are sadly uninspired. I'd suggest featuring several wines each week (or month) to allow guests to take advantage of the terrific bottles offered. The food is comprised of many ingredients and yet was sadly under-seasoned. Our appetizers and main looked beautiful but we were making too much use of the salt and pepper shakers. This was our biggest disappointment. Desserts were limited, and after the let down with the food, we passed. The French Press coffee was very good! I'll be back next time I'm in town to see if they've worked out the kinks of opening. My boyfriend and I stopped by for the first time just to have an after dinner drink and share dessert. The place is absolutely beautiful and there is a decent sized parking lot. It was a Saturday night around 9:30pm. The outside patio was empty, but looked like a great place to sit and have dinner (which we plan on doing). When we walked in we chose to sit at the bar, which had many open seats at that time. There were 3 people working behind the bar and all 3 were very nice and attentive. I ordered the bourbon smash and my boyfriend ordered a beer. We shared the Altered Peanut Butter Pie. It was just good. I don't think I'd get it again because there are probably better desserts to try. It also looked a little sloppy on the plate and not how I imagined it and how I've seen it advertised. For a place like this I feel that consistency is key and that there should be more attention to detail on these little things. Maybe they thought we wouldn't care because we were just there to check the place out, but we do plan to go back for dinner sometime. We live about 45 minutes from here and don't mind traveling for good food. In fact, our favorite restaurant is called Apollo Grill in Bethlehem and everything is always spot on. We spent right around $24 for two drinks and one dessert before tip. read more

This place was off the hook good. We often eat in Portland OR (which Bon Appetit rates as competitive with NYC for dining) -- and on this trip we spent a couple days in NYC hitting, among others, Michelin starred food. Alter House, at least the dinner we had, is right in that category, a very memorable and well done dinner, with both excellent executions of standards in the standard way, and also innovative dishes served.. well, innovatively. All just to say -- what a find in Clarks Summit. I'm astonished at the number of negative reviews here, though with only one visit I can't rule out inconsistency. We very much look forward to testing that theory when we are next in the area. One thing I want to say, do you know how you get a wine by the glass and check it out later and find that you paid more for the glass than you can get the bottle for? Well, the glass I had with dinner was probably not marked up at all from retail on that bottle of wine, what a bargain, and now I'm turned on a to a whole new Italian wine region to explore. So, thanks to both the chef and sommelier for a really lovely evening and ongoing enjoyment. read more

For the record.. I never make posts... This is our second time eating at the alter house. We hoped after the second try our meal would be better. The first visit my husband & I had wedge salads and scallops, which were delicious yet when the burgers came out they were extremely charred and obviously frozen. We enjoy eating out and expect when paying high end pricing that our meals be exemplary. A $17 burger should be juicy and delicious.. this was far from that. Our second time eating, this evening, we were excited to give this place another try. We enjoyed drinks & company for about an hour and a half prior to receiving bread, after we asked because we were starving. Once we received our main dishes, we were still hopeful yet immediately disappointed with the swordfish and home-made pasta dish. The swordfish was overdone & tasted like overcooked chicken, the pasta only tasted like oil with no other flavors and was the portion of a child's meal. None the less we will not be returning. Our waitress did not want to hear about this and seemed very frustrated. Although we did not enjoy our food, the ambiance and place was beautiful aside from there not being sufficient parking. Our meal and drink was $172 without the tip and most definitely not worth it. If you want a remarkable burger go to Hennings local in Sullivan county Ny and if you'd like a great dinner go to Rikasa in Pittston- the Canning House in Forty Fort is pretty amazing too. Call me a food snob but I know good food and the alter house is not to my standard for the prices they charge. read more

If this went to 10 stars, it's not enough to describe Alter House. My fiancée and I had our engagement party at the Alter House. From the exquisite decor to the signature cocktails, every detail was superbly attended to. The staff ensures that every moment of your experience is completely impeccable. But all of this may pale in comparison to one of the best meals that I've ever had. The local lamb was a meal that I will never forget. Visited Alter House last night for the first time as we live closer to Philadelphia. Service was prompt, very good, and checked in with us appropriately. Given Covid-19, the restaurant has a nice outside dining area with tables well spaced out. Wine selection is tasty and charcuterie board was delicious. Shrimp and fettuccine dish was a nice portion, and very fresh. New York strip steak was cooked to our liking, though a bit fatty. Frites were nice and crispy and flavorful. The only part of the dining experience that was negative was being seated at a high top table with high, very narrow seat bar stools which were extremely uncomfortable. These High top tables are better served as cocktail tables and not for a meal as the dishes were very crowded on top and you can not slide the chairs under the table to eat your meal comfortably. Suggestion might be to replace them all with low top tables seen around the restaurant. Look forward to visiting the restaurant again in the future. Thank you for a nice meal! read more

Another great dining experience. We have been coming here since it opened and are always happy with the wonderful cocktail and food options. Tonight we had the French 75 and the cran ginger tonic to start. We both had the Bibb salad ( because it was so good the last time!). I had the salmon-delicious! He had the short ribs- yum! Great menu, I ordered the chicken breast with pickled blackberries, unfortunately I think the waiter forgot to enter our order and the chef rushed and thus undercooked my chicken. When I told my waiter that the chicken was undercooked he tried to convince me it was due to it being sous vide, raw chicken has a very distinct texture. They offered to make me a new one but since it had taken over an hour to receive the initial entrees, and they closed in a little over a half hour, I declined.
