Completely unsatisfied. I paid over $100 to have a uniform skirt taken in and hemmed, and after wearing it once (two weeks later), the hem completely unraveled after the first wash. When I called, I was told their policy only allows corrections within one week no exceptions. I explained this was my first time wearing it since the alteration, but that didn't matter. Instead, I was told "if a hem is cut, it will unravel," which doesn't apply here because I never altered or cut anything myself. This isn't a timing issue, it's a quality issue. A properly done hem should not fall apart after one wear. The lack of accountability and unwillingness to make this right, especially for a new customer, is disappointing. I understand policies exist, but when workmanship clearly falls below standard, there should be some level of reasonable resolution. Unfortunately, that wasn't offered here. read more

I needed some fairly simple alterations but the language barrier made this difficult to convey. I had two dresses and needed the sleeves shortened. Nothing special, just straight hems. Both came out okay. I had a second dress that I wanted hemmed to a blouse. It was a straight column fit. In the end instead of a blouse I had a very cropped top with a very uneven bottom hem. I have used this business 2 times. The first was good. The 2nd time it was not. I brought in 2 Richardson 862 hats in to have simple Velcro patch sewn on the front. They charged me $30 which is absolutely ridiculous. I left them for a week. I had my wife pick them up. They do not accept credit cards or cash. It's Venmo, Paypal or check. I guess that's a way to avoid paying taxes. I got the hats and was instantly upset. They sewed the patches into the sweat band of the hat for starters. That's just lazy and unprofessional. If you know anything about Richardson hats they all have form liners in the front so the hat keeps its shape. Well, they smashed both hats down on the top and on the left and right sides. They creased the liner and bent it so that the hard now look crumpled instead of sharp and firm fitted like they should. I spoke to the owner and she said to bring them back and they'd redo them for free. I assumed that meant I'd get my money back. I didn't realize she meant they'd attempt to fix their lazy and shotty work without charging me again...how very professional of her. I go back today and attempt to get the hats fixed. They removed the stitching and sew it on underneath the sweat band but the hats are still crumpled and not sharp. After explaining this to them and showing them on the hat I was wearing what I meant she understood and explained that she has to do that the sew it on. She attempted to get the creases out with an iron. It helped a bit but the hats aren't like they were when I took them in. I accepted it because there was not much else I could do. I texted the owner and asked her if I'd be getting a refund. She replied no because the work was done. Never mind the 1.5 hours I had to spend driving halfway across town to take my hats back to them so they could fix the work they should've done correct the first time. Never mind the fact that the hats are not right and may never be right and they cost me $60. Oh and one last thing. If you don't speak Spanish you won't be able to converse with them which is a HUGE problem when trying to convey what you want done. When I called the store after my wife gave me the hats and was attempting to explain to the lady what was wrong, she didn't understand me so she simply hung up on me. My advice is to go to another seamstress that stands behind their work and is reasonable on pricing, expectations and customer service. Needless to say I'll never be going to this business again and won't recommend them to anyone I know or come into contact with! read more

Very expensive and not much attention to detail. Tailoring is an old art, this shop does not have passion for it and their work show it. I turned in a weather prof jacket for a zipper replacement and aside from giving me the wrong product, the sutures look crooked, way off from original and there's left over suture all over the inside of the jacket. Overall, lack of passion for the art and big lack of respect for costumers. BTW the price for a $1.00 zipper replacement was over $50. Never going back. read more

Not recommended! Story: Went there to get several pants hemmed. Came back when they said to as stated on my receipt. Get there and they looked very confused and said it was not ready... Thoughts: They were lucky I am a pretty nice guy, and did not complain about the situation even though I drove about 45 minutes round trip for nothing. Highly recommend! I purchased matching dresses from Broadway Pinups and they only had bigger sizes for little girls. I needed my one year olds dress altered from a size 7/8 to a 2/3T and they did such an amazing job!! Had it ready next day in time for our New Years Eve festivities. I certainly did not write a hot check and explained to you over the phone it was an error and the legal copy of the check could be renegotiated or redeposited. You could have even taken the check to my bank to resolve the issue and receive cash. It was then a personal choice of yours to not do so and rudely demand an alternative payment. It certainly would not make sense for me to write a hot check and return to your business for additional services and drop of additional clothing items if I had not intended to pay for my original services. There are respectful way to go about collecting funds and threatening is not one of the especially when you have a legal payment form that your choose not to re-negotiate. read more

I left a very expensive sequin gown to be hemmed, plus it needed a few extra minor alterations. Price? Almost $150.00. I arrived to pick up the dress a day AFTER date given to be picked up. I could see by the lady's expression the dress the dress was not ready and it appeared it had not been worked on. She asked if I could pick it up the following day which was not an option. Picked up the dress later that afternoon, brought it home to find it was a terrible mess. The hem was horribly uneven, very long in front, too short on sides and back and the slip underneath was worse. The slit on the dress had one side several inches longer than the other. When I took the dress back to be fixed, on the day dress was needed for the event, no less, the seamstress yanked and pulled on the too short sides to attempt to lengthen and said the dress needed to be pressed. When the owner came to look at the dress she stated that is how we had wanted the hem to be sewn! Unbelievable. I did request the gown be touching the floor, and a few inches in the front were touching, too long, but touching. There was no care from the owner in the investment we had made in the gown nor the exorbitant price of the shoddy work. She clearly could see the terrible job that had been done but did not offer an apology nor a refund. Beware! Overpriced, understaffed, and terrible service. read more

I had the best experience with Alterations to go! On Sunday I sent a message with pictures to ask if they could add sleeves to a dress that I needed for a wedding the very next day. The owner Carmen answered my email immediately "yes" they could with a nominal fee for same day service. I bought the dress in at 10 am on Monday with images of the sleeve design I wanted and by 3pm I had exactly what I wanted, altered perfectly. Rosa was the seamstress and is truly amazing. They are NOT closed. They should be. After going to this place five times or more, my husband had his jeans altered for $21. Yes, it was original hem, but in CA where we used to live I paid only $14. Highway robbery! I picked them up for him, and they were too long. We went out of town for the weekend, and when we took them back to be fixed...they would not fix their mistake without us paying the full fee again. They said they had a 5 day return policy which was in VERY small print on a plaque on the wall and NOT printed on our receipt. A verbal warning was also not given. After we explained that they did not tell us about their return policy, she looked at us and said that she did not care if we ever came back. Wow. The place is dirty, and the owners are arrogant. WOW.... Just had an opportunity to peruse the previous reviews and all I can say is that I had the complete opposite experience and that I was thoroughly impressed with "Alterations to Go." And too, I have been to every other recommended alterations firm in town.... I will start by saying I am not a novice to alterations. Ever since I was a kid in Dallas, I have hopped around to a variety of shops because I am the type of person who rarely finds a perfect fit for my clothes. Sadly, I have gotten to a point of apathy after having so many poor experiences. I have pretty much gotten to where if it doesn't fit- I don't buy it, or I will wear it as is since it can be so disappointing... Carmen is a rare delight in every way. She is professional, detailed, elegant, respectful, courteous, genuine, and passionate about delivering quality results. And contrary to what I have read here, speaks perfect English??? So far, Carmen, and her team at "Alterations to Go" in Olmos Park have been one of the most inspirational service and results oriented businesses I have come across... I was incredibly impressed. I am in no way related and only happened upon this location RELUCTANTLY after having poor experiences and trying to salvage a silk suit from a previous debacle... I don't usually leave bad reviews, but I wish I could leave zero stars here. Two weeks ago I dropped off a bridesmaid dress for hemming and the top to be stitched with an extra liner. I was told it would be ready in one week, and I remembered the bill to be about $100. I thought it was a bit expensive, but the dress is delicate and I don't mind paying more for quality. One week passes, and the tailor calls to say it will be another week. I say that's fine, but I leave next Friday for the wedding. He said, no problem. The next week comes, no phone call. I call around 2, that Friday afternoon and he says it'll be ready after 5pm. I show up at 520pm, and I see my dress on the table with pins still in the top, unstitched. He says 20 more minutes, cash only. I ask what the total price will be and I can use this time to go get cash. He doesn't remember and can't find the receipt, so he says $60. I get $60 and return, but he found my receipt and said it was actually $108.25. That's fine, i leave again and pull out another $60 cash. When I return, I give him the cash, but he didn't have enough change, and told me he'd had to give me $7 in QUARTERS AND DIMES! First off, I obviously don't hold cash myself since I had to go to an atm, I hate cash, I usually use credit. Also, it didn't look like he had $7 in change in the register. So then I ask if instead, I could pay with credit and I'd be happy to. He says no, he doesn't accept credit (even though the owner claimed they do in other reviews). So then I ask if he can just take the $8.25 off the price, I'd appreciate the discount and that way I don't have a purse full of change. He says no, he's not the boss, only a tailor, and he can't make that decision cuz she's not here. To which I ask if we can call her (the boss apparently). He says no, he can't call her. I asked why, he said she's on a trip. I asked again, why can't we just try to call her? He said, she's out of the country. I asked to where... he paused awkwardly, and blurted out, "SPAIN." Look, I know when someone is lying, we all do, it was obvious. At this point I just felt uncomfortable, so I asked for my money back. He asked if I was just going to leave the dress, to which I said, "I guess, I'm not sure, but right now I just want my money back. " At this point, he finally goes, "oh wait, why don't I just go get change?" WELL DUH! He walks out of the store, comes back with change for me. I grab my dress and walk out. Also, let me say, it's very obvious he stitched the top liner in the 20 minutes I was gone getting cash, it was a cheap, shoddy, rushed job. Definitely not worth the money. Not only am I never going here again, I'm suggesting everyone stay away as this guy is obviously a liar and probably avoiding taxes (which is why he only accepted cash). read more

I just posted about the other Alterations To Go location but had meant to post for this locations though I think they are run by the same owner. I would have to disagree with the other review of this location, I have had nothing but good service and excellent quality of work. If I may, I'll repost what I had written for the other location, "I've been going to this store for many years. My grandfather first took me here to have my first real suit altered. I've been going there ever seen, probably at least 15 years. Every little thing I have needed they have been able to do. I've grown several inches taller and changed weight several times through out the time and they have found ways to make my old clothes keep working for me. This is the type of place that business that values its customers and values the quality of the work they do. I left SA for college and stayed up in New England after but continually find myself saving clothing that need alterations to bring back with me when I visit my family because I have not found the type of service or quality anywhere else." I have been to the store several times after the previous post and still find their service impeccable. Even when I was in a rush to have a jacket tailored hours before a Christmas party I was told that they would stay open late so that it would be ready in time. I have been going to have my clothes altered at this place for 5 + years and haven't had a problem until today. A week ago I took three pairs of new uniform pants to be altered and when I picked them up this afternoon I realized that they were not properly done. When I brought this to the attention of the owner her response was, "well, we can't be sure that this was our fault so we will not fix them for free." I was speechless. In addition to not accepting responsibility for staff error, she is willing to lose a good, loyal customer for $38.00. Amazing!!! I will be searching for a new place for all future alterations. Amazing work and great people. I had my new Gucci suit altered elsewhere and let's just say I thought the damage done meant throwing it away. HOWEVER Alterations to-go took the suit jacket apart and fixed all the damage that was done. You wouldn't know it had ever been repaired. A saving of over $800. If you want cheap then Good Luck with your results, if you want quality then you pay for it. I wouldn't trust anyone else after my experience of a cheaper tailor. Thank You for your help in repairing my jacket and repairing my trousers, I love wearing them and think of you every time I put my suit on. I didn't think I would ever get to wear this suit. Only speaking on Alterations to Go in Olmos area. Decided to get a long sleeve shirt altered to a short sleeve. After being charged an "arm and a leg," I Wore it one time and washed it one time and noticed some of the stitching coming undone. Took it to them and they said it wasn't their fault and they could fix it at a price. I said, "No thank you." First and last time ever going to them. read more

We have used Alterations to Go for about 4 different occasions and their pricing always seemed a bit high. We recently took 2 suit jackets in with a pair of shorts and our bill was $200. When the alterations were finished, we picked them up but noted that the jackets were only tailored on the top but not fitted at all around the back or waist. The woman who "helped" us was named Rosie and she did not speak english so it was impossible to fix the problem. Rosie acted like she didn't even recognize my husband nor the ticket SHE wrote and therefore could not help us with the problem. I even called my mother, who speaks Spanish, to translate the conversation between Rosie and I and we were unable to be helped without paying another $200. She then proceeded to write us another ticket for $200 to tailor the two jackets, which would have taken us to $400 total for two jackets and a pair of shorts. That is just crazy. I am extremely frustrated at this business in their audacity of overcharge customers with the goal of making as much money per transaction as possible with little or no work required. We will never be back at Alterations to Go, and encourage you to think twice before overpaying for cheap work. read more

There was a guy that worked there that was super nice and understood English..dropped a pair of miss me jeans I needed hemmed and they charged $16. They are perfect! Just went back to drop a pair of True Religion jeans off and now I'm getting charged $40.... For the same thing. Just hemmed. The lady only speaks Spanish. I only speak English and now when I call to ask for the gentlemen that works there so I can ask why is the same job now doubled in price I only get the lady and she can't understand a word I'm saying. It's very frustrating. They do amazing work but when I can't even ask about the work or pricing it makes me not want to go back. Not happy. read more

Ruined a dress. After many poor attempts to repair (at the Lincoln Heights and Olmos locations), when I was originally told they could do what I asked, I was told by the owner that I would have it fixed on the house as a courtesy for the trouble. It was fixed but not the way I originally had asked for. So then she wanted to make me pay after all. It still was not the way I wanted and wouldn't have had them go to the trouble to redo it if I knew I was still going to have to pay. I would not pay for the ruined dress/skirt so she told me she'd take me to court unless I let her keep it. Obviously I won't be returning. Not the best alterations anyway. But added insult to injury when I was told I wouldn't have to pay for anything. No money spent, but I lost a dress that I could have sold or taken somewhere else. She also told me she'd have to take her employees word (who originally ruined the dress) over mine as I am just the customer and she doesn't know me. Unacceptable customer service. read more

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT GO to this tailor. There are other tailors in town that are significantly better - from quality of work to customer service to prices. The woman that owns this place is extremely rude and is only out to steal money from the affluent that she serves in Olmos Park and Alamo Heights. I came in one day to pick up my hemmed pants and I pointed out to her that the legs were not the same length. Rather than admitting that they had made a mistake, she told me to leave and never come back. Clearly she was wrong, but she could not own the mistake and take responsibility, despite continuing to tell me that the length of the legs were the same. Poor attitude and horrendous customer service. Go somewhere else. And be sure to tell others not to use this place. By not doing so, you're encouraging the owner to continue to treat others in the same manner. See other reviews below and you will see this is a common occurrence with this woman. read more
