Bad experience when filling out the form online, I selected a neuter plus a shot package during drop off. They made me signed paperwork, but did not confirm anything with me so I would assume because I did the form online. They would've provided the shot package to my dog, but they did not since I did not confirm it during drop off, which why would I think I had to do that and in the end, my puppy could not get shots! I've brought a few dogs here over the years. Most recently, I brought a pup in on Thursday, 02/16/23. Drop off was a little hectic, I tried waiting off to the side so that my dog could wait in peace, which ended up moving me to the end of check in even though I was there early. They sent an email later in the day that allowed me to pay prior to pick up. I arrived on time for pick up, but they were short staffed and said they needed about 20 more minutes. Pick up was smoother than drop off, and we left with our meds and cone. read more

I am giving two stars because they did and do perform surgeries on many animals per day. But the front office staff is CONSISTENTLY rude to many people every single day. I've used this service a good twenty times because I used to help a TNR group do trapping. I would then bring the animals to get altered, and the veterinary staff has never been anything but patient, kind, helpful, and wonderful. The front office, though, oh, my gawd, horrid experiences over and over. In particular, the woman who sits on the left side (as you face the counter) with the dark hair and glasses is just wretched. She is consistently short, impatient, and downright rude. I don't work there! I think if I have a question, even if she thinks it's a "dumb" question, my question should be answered professionally, which includes patience, kindness, and in a neutral, not sarcastic, tone. I truly don't understand how she still has a job, because she has been incredibly rude to both me, my fellow trappers who work for the same organization I did, and perfect strangers that were also in the waiting area/in the line. As an aside, I have also brought animals to the Altered Tails Mesa location. NIGHT AND DAY EXPERIENCE. The Mesa group is always professional. The Phoenix location, well, here we are, a 2-star review. First of all I called the day before and emailed all day no response I even left a voicemail! This place is sketchy asf! Like doesn't seem clean at all!!! In the hood .... The flyers said that there would be a line, and there was literally nobody outside. Some people pulled up, and I instantly kept getting calls from them and then when I called back, nobody answered yet again. A little annoyed because normally I like to confirm before I drive off and I should've waited but I drove 45 minutes to get here and I gave a $40 deposit. The first time was my mistake. I was nervous , i mean NERVOUS to have my puppy fixed. I cried at drop off , i cried at pick up. I'm sure the staff thought i was a little crazy but my fur is my whole wide world. Years ago i went with a boyfriend to get his dog fixed here , and also i have a friend extremely active on the pet rescue scene who spoke highly, but still , momma was scared. The whole process the staff was really nice . These people love these animals, regardless of if it's routine and they see soo many a day . Her recovery was a million times easier than i would have expected . She never seemed in pain even after her meds and her scars are soo tiny . I had paid a $20 deposit to schedule my dog's surgery, however, my dog wasn't allowed to get the surgery because of a rash he had developed. At the time, I was emailing back and forth trying to get his surgery rescheduled. His vet finally gave us the approval to go forward with the surgery so I called to schedule his appointment. I was just told that they marked it as a no call/no show and the system turned the $20 into a donation. I emailed and spoke with someone about rescheduling and they had told me to call when my dog was ready. Now I'm being told to go online and submit an appointment request and pay $20 again. I have tried calling, as well as the adoption group. I left one voice mail. I am not going to keep wasting my time trying to call someone who can't even own up, and is upset that they have a bad review. Sorry but I am a person who does reviews to let other people know my experiences. Most of my reviews are good, but when something goes bad I also write a review. Can't always post the good.* If I could put zero stars I would. We adopted a dog from one of the local adoption companies, but before we could have her she needed to be spayed so they brought her August 4th, and two days later we got her from the fosters, and every place she had been before had been around healthy dogs, and showed zero signs of illness. Well she did indeed pick up kennel cough from here, and unfortunately all of my animals got sick. Blue Pearl confirmed it, even though I already knew in my gut. Mistakes happen and in this case this one is a big one. They need to do a way better job of keeping sick animals away from healthy ones, and cleaning the facility a little more frequent. They also need to answer the phones when people try to call. The adoption company tried calling multiple times to inform them, and get some medication from them and no answer. I was extremely grateful to find an affordable place to take my kitten to. Although one of the front desk representatives are extremely rude. I'm not saying all of them and unfortunately I didn't ask for the name of the one that had spoke to me over the phone, but I had asked a couple of questions about my kittens medical history that was done there and the response given was very sarcastic and rude, speaking to me as if I was stupid. Even if my questions had easy answers, I would appreciate to be responded with some human decency. I took my cat to the Phoenix location this past Wednesday to be spayed and given her vaccinations and chip. Setting up the appointment online was simple and convenient. They emailed me back early the next day ( I'd made the appointment on a Sunday ) with confirmation on my chosen date and full instructions, along with a PDF form to be filled out beforehand to bring to the clinic to save some time. I arrived a little after 7 am for the 7:30 opening time. There was a short wait outside until the doors opened but once inside the process was reasonably straightforward and quick. My little girl was taken back in her carrier and they told me I could pick her up at 4:30 pm. The surgery and process went well and I can say I'm happy so far with the results. Check out was smooth and pretty quick as well. It's been just over 3 days now and she seems to be doing fine, albeit a little more sedate from her experience. The sutures are very clean and there has been no sign of seepage or anything to cause concern so far. The staff was friendly and efficient, asked if I had any questions and gave the impression they cared about what they do, so I was more at ease in my nervousness to be putting my pet through this. I can say I'd definitely recommend Altered Tails as a good choice in getting your pet spayed or neutered. The Phoenix location might be described as being in a sort of "sketchy" part of town but don't let that dissuade you in choosing them if you live in the area; it's not that bad. It's a tiny place, and I wonder how they spay neuter, so many dogs & cats, plus do all the laundry, of trap covers, put new lining in traps, give reverse shots, and have them ready for pick up, all by 4pm. I've been having my Pekingese's spayed and neutered with these guys since they use to drive a bus around Phoenix to different locations until they got the building they are in now. Yes they are busy. But they are the best. I don't trust my pets to anyone but them. They also have an amazing trap n release program as well I recommend them to everyone all the time. Can't beat their prices anywhere. Altered Tails is wonderful. They provide low-cost spray and neutering for dogs and cats, as well as, for feral cats. The staff is extremely friendly and caring. They took the time to carefully explain in detail after care steps to ensure my puppy would heal promptly. My dog was spayed a few weeks ago she started to open her wound during the night by licking-- they fixed her up for free and really took the time to take care of her. MELOXICAM (pain meds) ONLY LASTS ONE DAY NOT THREE DAYS LIKE THEY TELL YOU!!!!! Only reason I'm giving this place three stars is because I kno how much this place helps animals in need and providing low cost spay neuter... I paid extra for pain meds when my little girl was spayed. The lady up front informed me Meloxicam was injected into to her and she will be pain-free for 3 days!! And that this injected meloxicam lasts 3 days in the system. And that she is way too small to take pain meds home (such a lie because my vet gave me meloxicam to take home when I went to him after she had surgery at altered tails). My poor baby girl was in so much pain the next day, she would not pee, eat, and had constant diarrhea. I was so worried I took her to a vet. This vet at Banfield Hospital informed me that meloxicam only lasts one day, so I was completely misinformed and my poor baby was suffering tremendously. Don't tell people the wrong information!!!! And have your pet suffer!!! How would you feel if you had your ovaries ripped out and they tell you your pain meds will last 3 days but in actuality it wears off after one day. Wouldn't you want to die from such pain?!!! Spaying is a lot more painful than neutering (my vet told me this) so I recommend if you are spaying to go elsewhere or make sure to get pain meds you can take home. I like that this clinic is nonprofit and they help so many animals, but for how much my baby suffered and the costs of going here and then taking her to a vet all equalled about the same as any other hospital. Plus they lost her baby blanket and I called several times asking for it and they NEVER called me back nor did the manager even call me back to discuss them giving me the wrong information!!! I would pay the extra money if u love and care for your pet and do not want them suffering!!!!! read more

I had my 2 year old golden spayed here this week and everything went very well. The morning check in process was very easy and staff was very friendly. The incision site is so small and looks great. We did choose to give her the extra pain med (meloxicam) which is just an NSAID and I was worried it would not be enough. However dogs are amazing and she doesn't seem to be in any pain at all. We had our puppy neutered here on Thursday and couldn't be happier. We showed up a little early, as recommended, to wait in line. The staff came out and told us they had funding that day and that most of us should be covered. We left our sweet pup there and were told to come back at 4 for pick up. They called us at 11:30 saying he was done and upset, so we could come get him early. Pickup was great, the staff was super nice, and we paid only $35 for neuter, meds, cone, and microchip! We would've paid over $100 for all of that had they not had donors, but even that is cheap compared to the vet's office who wanted $350! All in all it was a great experience, our puppy is doing great, and the staff and facility was super nice. Would definitely use their services again. read more

We went to the Altered Tails in Mesa last Saturday to get our 15 mo old dog neutered. GET THERE EARLY is my best advice since everyone has a check in time at 7:30am. We got there around 6:45 and were 8th in line. The staff was friendly and handled our dog with care. The check out went very smooth. The front desk staff was kind and helpful. We even got a discount for a portion Petsmart covered. Total neuter with microchip, all shot, e-collar and the discount came to $102, very reasonable. We were given 3 days worth of pain meds. The tech took time to explain what they did and what to look for in the next week. All in all it was a good experience. read more

I can't thank the staff at Altered Tails enough! They worked with myself and a couple that found a stray puppy in the desert, unfortunately this couple couldn't keep her. We wanted to adopt her but wanted to make sure she was healthy before bringing her home. Altered Tails helped with a blood test and then in the same week they were able to vaccinate and spay her too. They were so kind and helpful! They were patient with me as I asked questions and very supportive of our unique situation. We took our dog who we just got from a family that had to rehome her, to altered tails on Tuesday to get spayed. My husband and son dropped her off in the morning. They said the drop off, even though there was a line which we were told there would be, was quick and simple. I went to pick her up at the scheduled time, she was ready to go and the vet tech who brought her out could not have been nicer. He clearly explained the medication we needed to give and then put her cone on. At that point she laid down and didn't want to get up, so the tech was kind enough to carry her to the car. Great, great, great service. Again, two more dogs were dumped at my school. I helped them find homes. Part of the whole adoption and rescue included a visit here. I wish I knew about it for my cats. It is very cheap compared to the plan I got with Petsmart. It is a five star service for sure. They do great things and even have a Feral cat program. God Bless them. Please, someone help them to open more clinics. As much as I hate to do this since Az is just awful as far as animal welfare goes, I am knocking off a star. I am doing this as a heads up to folks who want to use the service because of a very rude staff member and a very disorganized check in procedure. Just be flexible if you chose their services. Perhaps bring another person to help you? The place has an assembly line check in so do not expect fancy Vet customer service. You get what you pay for. In my case I was not paying. I was just helping out and dropping off the dogs. I kept telling the woman at intake this and she kept arguing with me. This proved to be very stressful for me and the dogs. I left the place extremely upset. The dogs were very scared. They had been through a lot these last two weeks. I was especially annoyed at the way one of the intake clerks was treating me. She was snappy and rude with me. I noticed she treated a few other patrons the same way. I think the check in process is stressful, disorganized, and unclear. Maybe a sign to tell you how to do it? I had no idea what to do. When I returned the paperwork on the counter the woman literally tore my head off, threw it back at me and said, "get back in line." I was so confused. Usually one hands in paperwork at a medical clinic and then gets called back up in turn. Also, there really was not a line to get back into. Maybe they should do a ticket number thing like at the Deli? The intake room is way too small for the volume. Lots of pets peeing, smelly, and loud barking craziness. There was nowhere to sit. I had to fill out the paperwork standing up with two dogs tugging on a leash, jumping on my legs, and hiding behind me twisting the leash around me, scared to death. The intake worker kept telling me to move away from the counter but there was nowhere else to go. Those dog's butts were not budging from their hiding area. Poor babies were very stressed out, so was I. A few patrons were yelling at the intake workers for not having them down for their verified appointments too. I wanted to video tape the scene it was sooooooooooo crazy. It sure was a zoo both literally and figuratively. lol. When you have scared animals it can be very aggravating. The intake worker could have been much nicer. However, all of the other staff members were very helpful, especially the Techs. I also liked the woman who was walking around helping people. Karma dictated that she appeared after I already checked in and was on my way out. Anyway, it is a great service for sure just be open minded. Be prepared to be a bit aggravated for your reduced cost services. I could have given them 5 stars but they need to improve their check in services. They also should educate staff surrounding sensitivity. read more

Had my dog neutered here last week. He came home with a scrotal hematoma. Tried calling Altered Tails the following day (Friday) but they must have been closed because no one answered multiple calls. Ended up having to take him to a different vet for more medications. It's been 4 days and my dog is still in pretty rough shape. I gave three stars because this place provides a valuable and important service. They were professional and helpful when I brought my dog in. I understand that they do dozens of surgeries every day. Altered Tails has done three spays (one adult cat, two kittens) and two neuters (both kittens) for me, and all of the cats were very well cared for. The staff are professional and no-nonsense. The waiting room and parking lot are clean, although occasionally noisy. I've seen plenty of small dogs (and medium, and big) here, and they had no problem with anesthetizing small female kittens, so I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about.
