I'm a Shipt delivery driver and delivered to this winery today. Normally I don't take the time to write reviews, but this was really bad. The customer messaged me at 12:53 PM and said to call when I was at the gate so that I could drive in and deliver the groceries to the door. I arrived and it went straight to voicemail. I then to let them know that I was there and waited in the car for a while with the groceries and didn't get a response. (Please note that their delivery instructions say if not home leave at gate.) I put the groceries in the shade to the side under their house number which was clear on the photo. Twelve minutes later I get a message from them saying, "You left groceries outside an open gate in hot sun dumbest thing I've ever seen". Contacted support and blocked them. Rude!! read more

In love, plan to be a regular. Black owned, family owned. Met the fam and they were all incredibly sweet and personable. Lots of large cabanas for large groups that were all spaced well. Live music in the back section. Pup friendly, just careful of the vineyard area filled with burrs and thorns. Due to covid complications, no tastings, bottles only. The Santa Barbera was delicious. Black owned winery for Black American History Month. They provide an excellent selection of wines. Tanisha provides an excellent history of the vineyard. Perfect for celebrations. I had an amazing time at Altipiano yesterday afternoon. The setting is so beautiful and peaceful, just what I needed after a long week. This is the type of place you come to soak in the ambiance and leisurely sip their delicious wines. If you are looking for the fast paced, super technical service that most wineries in the area provide, this isn't it. This is legitimately a family run operation and they invite you into their home. They know their wines but they also know the region. We listened to intimate stories about the history of San Diego from Peter, the family historian. This winery has the best hospitality I've ever experienced. It is family owned and run, which is something I always try to support. We were seated in an amazing area overlooking the vineyard and it made for a very peaceful day. The view was spectacular and we had a group of seven, so that was nice. There was live music that day as well. We were quickly greeted by the owners daughter who really made the day for us. She was kind, funny and knew her wines so it helped a lot during the tasting experience. They had mostly red wines, which were all quite tasty. The Estate Barbera was probably my favorite. If you want to make a day of wine tasting and don't feel like driving all the way up to Temecula, this is a great place! read more

They were very accommodating to my wife and our pup! we called to see if we need reservations and with the covid restrictions it is best for reservations, even though they were booked they allowed us to come and stay for a while. the chairs and tables are spaced out perfectly. While wine tasting in Escondido Altipiano Winery was reccomended to us to try. We were really impressed with the patio and so many places to sit. The back yard if you will offer a fantastic view of vines and rolling hills. The tasting room is small but apprapro for the crowd. But with six seats if would fill up quick. Lisa was our server and was very nice. We tasted six wines that were a good representative of the area. The wines I wanted to taste...sangiovese and syrah were not available to taste only buy. Parking lot is as small as the tasting room. About 10 spaces at best. And getting in and put can be tricky if meeting other cars. Nice bathrooms, very elegant with large ovetsized paper towels for you. Definitely Jen G approved. I could see coming back here and enjoying a glass of wine on the patio or back yard. read more

We did Orfila first, and wanted to end the day on a high note and end with Altipiano based on the great reviews and my personal contact with them. However, they were closed before the posted time. I called to simply ask if their wine is vegan and that's literally all I asked (for those who do not know, some wineries use animal based fining agents and some use non animal fining agents). Moving on: The woman who answered the phone delivered questionable customer service. It was that bad. I simply asked 1 question and in turn, she replied with arrogance, disrespect, and attitude. People in San Diego think they have to go to Temecula to enjoy the experience of visiting and winery and don't even realize all of the great wineries right here in San Diego County. Rather than drive an hour or so up to Temecula, just take a short drive up towards Escondido and start your wine tasting tour right here at Altipiano. Only a few minutes of the I-15 freeway in the Highland Valley is this amazing winery serving award wining wines. As you drive up, although they are just minutes from the freeway, with it's scenic views, you'll feel as though you have traveled miles away from the city. There is a sign on the roadway so they are easy to find and parking is never a problem. There is an indoor tasting room and an outdoor patio. The outdoor patio is by far the favorite of all who visit as you will experience an unobstructed view of the Highland Valley and taking in the view while enjoying some incredible wine makes for a perfect day. But at least stop in and see the tasting room. It's beautifully decorated and there's a nice bar with stools and you can enjoy your wine while chatting with the owners of Altipiano, Denise and Peter Clark. My first time there I started talking to Denise and Peter and they have been great friends ever since. Bear in mind this is a "boutique" winery and smaller than your typical winery in Temecula. But don't think for a second because they are little smaller that they don't produce exceptional wine! And moreover, it's far more of a personal experience here than if you were to head up to Temecula. Here you will meet the wine makers and any possible question you have about what wine to try, what goes with what food, and anything else you'll get answered because you're talking to the people who make it and their passion for wine making shows. These aren't people who are doing this for a hobby. They studied the industry and you can tell they put their whole heart into each bottle. So treat yourself to some of the most amazing wines you'll ever have and save yourself from a long trip up north and enjoy great wine right here in San Diego County. read more

Came here with a couple friends on Mothers Day to get away for the day. Beautiful views here, they had a nice guy playing music and wine tasting,. I wish the gal pouring poured more than what that spigot poured, we all did. It also would have been nice if there was someone to talk to us about the wines we were tasting. Shading every where and unique little touches for each guest. I can just go there and read a book with a glass of wine that's how comfortable it is. Nope. The space was beautiful. The wine we tasted, meh. If you are hungry or don't drink wine, this is not the place for you. Our DD asked our server, Roseanne Barr, what else they had to drink. She said "We don't have anything else except water " which she returned with and promptly tossed 4 little bottles of water on the table as she was walking by. Then we were greeted by the husband of the winemaker. He told us a few bad "funny" stories that might have been funny when he was younger 100 years ago, where we had to force what might pass as chuckles. When we went to pay, it was confusing to figure out where to go to do that. We were directed by a lady sitting at a table with another lady drinking wine to " Just go over there, in that door ". When we went in, it turned out to be their retail shop that was empty of any staff. We waited for a few minutes until Roseanne came through the door to cash us out. No wonder she was a little surly, she seemed to be the only one working, as the lady drinking wine that pointed and told us to "go that way " was the winemaker/owner! read more

Ah Altipiano! where do i begin? Everything about my visit was phenomenal. I think meeting Denise really set the right tone for me, this is a beautiful property owned by two thoughtful and wonderful people. We even met some of the club members who embraced us and sat with us, spoke about the winery to us and even suggested i should join the wine club...AND I DID! There is only one white and the rest are reds. My favorite was the due barili which was made from two barrels and a blend of two vintages. I wish they sold food but then i would never want to leave there, it is far but worth the visit. read more

The music of wine played a symphony in my soul at Altipiano Vineyard & Winery. It was like traveling to Italy, and yet I only travelled as far as Escondido! Red wine highlights included the Altipiano Estate 2012 Brunello Sangiovese, an award winning wine, as well as the Altipiano 2013 Estate Due Barili, which is a black and red Sangiovese blend. Also outstanding in taste was the Altipiano 2013 Carignane, with hints of chocolate and cherry, and a pleasantly smooth shelf of taste on the tongue. These reds are all created on the estate. Vineyards are traditionally planted north to south facing for the best sun, but at sunny Altipiano they are planted east to west facing to take advantage of the prevailing winds for natural pest controls. Very comfortable patio furniture is placed on shady patios, with pleasing colors. Complimentary chocolates and oyster crackers were on the table to enjoy with our wine. Food isn't available, other than the crackers and chocolate. We were fortunate to hear fascinating stories told by the owner, who poured our wine. He credited his wife with having an exceptionally rare and discerning palate for wine. This is the very best winery I have visited in the USA! I'm planning to join their wine club. read more

We took some friends here while they were in town and we had a great time. The grounds were beautiful and the wine was amazing. Their Barbera is my absolute favorite, I've been dreaming about it ever since we shared the bottle there. They weren't serving food when we went, but we were able to bring our own. Found off of the 15 north. The location is hidden, and beautiful. The owners are sweet and personable. Good scenery, cute location for couples. I had a great experience here. I headed to the area, I'm not sure what you call these hills, but the area is littered with wineries. We showed up prior to opening and called from the gate and they were kind enough to let us in without a reservation. We sat outside in their lush patio and had a bottle of their Cabernet Sauvignon. We got to meet some of the Denise one of the wine makers and her daughter and grand daughter; all of whom work on the property. They were so friendly and inviting that it really made for a wonderful experience. While I'd love to see some of the other wineries in the area, I will definitely make it a point to include Altipiano on my next visit to the area. read more
