A friend was having a gathering here recently and invited us to join. I have been hearing about Forgotten Barrel for a few years now, but I assumed it was pretty far out there in Escondido. I was wrong. It's not far off the 15 freeway in a small unassuming neighborhood. If you didn't know it was there you would never discover it. We arrived and took the last spot in the front parking lot. There is another parking lot, it seems like there's plenty of parking around. We found our party in a courtyard next to the tasting room. There was plenty of seating and tables for everyone, and it was sectioned off from the rest (if you need a private area). We went in the tasting room and tasted several wines before deciding. The staff were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about their wines. After we got our wine, we decided to walk the property. It's a very quaint, unique piece of property with old buildings and new ones made to look old (bathrooms). You can walk through the vineyards and there are various areas where you could have parties. There is a barn, which is beautifully decorated and lit inside. It would be perfect for a wedding reception or any other type of party. There are several areas where you could put multiple groups of people or use the whole facility for a giant party. When we were there, there was live music. The band was really good and we enjoyed sitting under the umbrellas and trees while listening. There was also a pizza food truck whilst we were there. I ordered a pepperoni pizza and they delivered it to where we were sitting. I shared it and we all enjoyed a slice. I can't believe I didn't know this existed here before, but I'm so glad to have discovered it. I will definitely come back and bring friends. It's just the perfect little spot to spend some time. Maybe listen to some music, eat some food and drink some wine. read more

I just got back from an afternoon at the Forgotten Barrel Winery. What an amazing time we had. No only so they have a wide choice of wines to choose from, by the glass and by the bottle, but the prices are reasonable. They also offer tasting menus, so you get healthy pours of different wines to try. They also offer some premade food for sale, charcuteries, hummus, crackers, cheeses. Plus there's a food truck that sells amazing burgers starting at 3. While we were there, there was live music being played in the Central courtyard. Guests could sit on their provided seating under a large shaded tree and some had their small dogs with them on leash. Because we were a medium size group and had made a reservation, we were placed in a separate room with plenty of inside and outside covered seating. The winemaker even gave us a tour of the facilities. Showing is the process from the grapes, to the hopper and ending with the barrels where they age. It's definitely worth driving out to visit this beautiful winery in Escondido. read more

This place is really cute! It's a historic winery tucked away in the back of a neighborhood in Escondido. Would have never even known it was there if someone didn't recommended it to us. The ambiance is really chill. Nice outdoor space with lots of quiet spots to enjoy your wine. I like their whites and roses. The rose on tap is actually really great with slight effervescence. This is a beautiful winery in Escondido. It's easy to get to off the 15 freeway and tucked in a quiet residential area. Service was great. There was love music when we were there on a Sunday afternoon. We walked around exploring the winery grounds while enjoying their wines. We opted for the wine tasting and I appreciate the nice size pours. Some wineries do miniscule pours. Not here! No outside food allowed but they do have some pre-packaged meat and cheese options for purchase. Nice plates and utensils are provided. No paper plates and plastic utensils here. read more

I'm so sad I've lived in San Diego county for 13 years and haven't been here until this weekend. I am equally as sad that they're only open on the weekends. I came here with a few friends and our kids, and it was absolutely wonderful. Truly the best wine I've had in North County San Diego and way more intimate than some of the other venues that offer live music. John, who helped provide the wine, said that soon they will be offering food truck services as well. There is a turf lawn area where kids can run around and play so all around it's a family friendly spot. read more

Tucked away in the land of endless Christian churches, schools, high schools, pre-schools is Forgotten Barrel Winery. Conveniently located just a few minutes from the freeway. Walking in you come across a rather rustic and mechanic vibes winery. Lots of old machinery hanging around on the corners of the winery (kind of odd) it adds character I supposed. They have a large space for celebrations towards the back and the actual groudns of the winery are pretty big, offering various seating areas. Both under shade and sun. There are many beautiful trees on the property and bushes with flower varieties. The wine itself was ok. Not my favorite compared to other wineries in the area. The staff of one was ok. She was towards the end of her shift, she seemed a burned out. We did come about an hour before closing time. All in all an ok winery, would come back for convenience but not particularly for the wines nor the vibes. read more

I just had my 50th birthday party at Forgotten Barrel this past Saturday. Everything went perfectly and it was an amazing evening. The venue itself was so charming and lovely, and the wines and beers are delicious. Everyone had an amazing time and I received numerous compliments on the venue and party overall. We have been Escondido residents for years. Finding this small winery was a real surprise and joy for our family. Our first visit last year was very memorable. Unfortunately, yesterday our return visit left us with a really bad taste. Not from the wine but the guest service we received upon arival. The bar tender didn't acknolage us when we arrived in the tasting room and was less than hospitable. Mind you we were the only guests in at this time. Without much guidance from the person staffed, we settled on a bottle of your Chardonnay. We enjoyed privately and pleasantly in the upper courtyard. We were aware of the 7pm close and arrived at 6pm. Sadly, the most interaction we received from the tasting room bartender was to let is know that they were closing,. Hey, Incase no one noticed but we are in a Pandemic. Yet, we need to get out for small social interaction, life enrichment and fresh air. This particular Saturday was World Mental Health Day, and yes, this applies to all of us. Forgotten Barrel came to mind as a local urban winery. They were only open for pick up for six hours out of the week and just opened up at reduced capacity on their quaint yet broad property. One can make a reservation for a table for $40 and the monies are applied to any bottle, glass or food purchases from the tasting room. When I worked in in wine education, sales and events for a local vineyard and winery we would taste at places at no cost. We came here when Ferrar Winery was in this residential neighborhood, it was strange and funny being in a residential neighborhood. But with a completely revamped plan, the Forgotten Barrel is a perfect wedding site, with lawn for ceremony, barn for reception. There is also ample outdoor space for workshops and events of all sorts in a covered space. And plenty of spaces on weekends to lounge for all. There are Adirondack chairs, tables that hold your wine glasses in slots spread around the property and perfect for 6 ft distancing. I first enjoyed their Pinot Noir at the New Village Arts Center in Carlsbad at a play. They source their grapes from the best places in the state. The soil where certain varietals grow matter. We came to celebrate World Mental Health Day and had to go with the area 5150 to celebrate life. We had to order a charcuterie, as this power combo is so fulfilling. Then a bottle to take home when the mood moves us. The service here is solid, the wine is some of our favorite for a San Diego winery and the grounds offer opportunity to explore some history. Did I mention, it is also dog friendly. Our wine server brought our fur babe water. There were about seven other parties enjoying the day. We are so happy that Forgotten Barrel is almost in our back yard and plan to spend more time with them, Pandemic or Not! We had an amazing time here for our work Xmas party! They also have beer here too which was nice for the ones not really feeling the wine but there for the party. The only thing I wish the venue would have provided or suggested is things to help keep the food warmer for a longer period of time. I'm pretty mg bougie boss would have paid for it for the party he would have been willing to spend the extra money for that. Who knows maybe he didn't think of that. It's super rustic here and the wine was great! After the party later at work a coworker said there was wine tasting and that's something that should have been marketed better and made known to guests because I seen a little room but it looked like they were just selling bottles in there. Beautiful and charming and cozy and lovely. Went last night for the first time tagging along with a friend who told me there is as a free opera concert (freebie, yes!) And we should go. Located in a residential neighborhood I would have never guess or think about going there if it wasn't for this invitation. This used to be the Ferrara winery dating back late 1800s and now under new owners and with a modern twist without losing the old trees (very old ones, the stories they can tell!) And the mural depicting some fun character. I liked everything, every corner of this small winery and with the music and the summer orange and cloudy skies, what a jewel. read more

We really enjoy coming to The Forgotten Barrel. It's a nice place to hang out and relax with some good wine. They often have live entertainment and food trucks. I do wish they had more of a selection for food choices since you can't bring in outside food. The sangria is delicious and you can't go wrong with good wine. read more

We absolutely loved hosting our wedding at Forgotten Barrel. The venue was perfect for our group size (88). The space was just right for our ceremony, cocktail hour, dancing, games, photo booth and a warm & cozy atmosphere. We chose Forgotten Barrel because we wanted to have very specific food. Most venues have preferred vendor lists and are very rigid. We were able to hire the caterers we wanted to meet our cultural needs. Forgotten Barrel even introduced us to one of the vendors we used. We also enjoyed the winery's package that included dessert, DJ, and the bar. Having that already lined up, helped us. All the vendors that came through the venue were absolutely amazing! Alyssa, Venue Coordinator, helped us in every step of the way. We had a lot of questions and she patiently helped us with everything she could. We had a challenging theme, sustainability, but Forgotten Barrel did everything to help us reduce waste. At first we were uncertain if the winery was going to photograph well, but our pictures were absolutely fantastic. All the different locations available at the winery made for fabulous photos. We were so happy with how everything turned out. Alyssa, the Forgotten Barrel team, and all their vendors made the day extra special for us. We were very glad to have them by our side. read more

This place exceeds expectations for wineries in Southern California. It's in Escondido for God's Sake! They manage to circumvent the limits of growing grapes in this region by sourcing great fruit from other appellations like Napa Valley, Paso Robles, Sonoma, Santa Rita Hills, and elsewhere in San Diego county. The wines are really lovely and the staff that we've met are knowledgeable and very friendly (Linda, I think). On the day we went, they also had live music that was a super talented band. I went with the family this weekend for the first time (and I live less than 5 miles from it and never knew). I'm so happy I found this spot. The winery is a great spot to relax and enjoy some delicious wines. I tried some of the reds and enjoyed them very much. We also had the sangria which was perfect for the warm day. We also ordered some meats and cheeses. Very cool spot right in the heart of Escondido. I will be coming back many times. The service is wonderful...clean spot with a very relaxing atmosphere. Ferrara was in our town for many years and a piece of history so it was a sad day when they did close. However now Forgotten Barrel has brought the winery back to life. They are making many wines with sourced grapes and they have grapes growing on site that should be ready to use in about two years. The property is gorgeous. Its got a lot of old things lying around, but its really a lovely place with multiple locations onsite that can be used for private events. The tasting room is small, but worked well on the Saturday afternoon we visited. There were about five parties experiencing tastings. Two of our party of four did the standard tasting and two of us did the Red tasting. Most of the wines were terrific with lovely flavors. I got the luxury of also tasting the whites that my husband had in his standard tasting. My favorite tasting hands down was the port. I'm not even a port person or a sweet wine person, but the Papadude Port Style dessert wine was ridiculously rich, velvety and tasty, especially along with the chocolate they made available. I cannot explain how great it was except to say that I don't eat chocolate or sweet wines and I was in love with this stuff! I also enjoyed both of the Chardonnays, the '12 Carneros was bright and fresh, reminiscent of apples and the '13 Atlas Peak was creamy and interesting. I also enjoyed the '13 Carneros Pino Noir and the '13 Alexander Cabernet Sauvignon. Some of the others were various levels of good or not so much. I'm not a great wine connoisseur - I'm more of a whiskey or beer girl, but I know what I like and what I don't! I had a really nice time. I love that its almost walking distance to my house. I did not join their wine club, but I might... I'm still thinking about it. Definitely recommend. GO. read more
