The place is a bit unassuming on the outside, but the view from the inside is incredible. A very nice touch that they do is bringing out small surprise appetizers free of charge-flavored popcorn of the day, different breads, cheeses-all of which are great. While visiting Pittsburgh, I discovered that this city has become a quite the foodie spot. The first place I visited was on a top of the Mt. Washington with a spectacular view of down town. The first floor had some simple interior, large windows, and lots of wines on the wall. It was actually nice and bright. Without much color or artwork, it was rather monochromatic and modern. We had a business dinner setup upstairs, so off we went. The upstairs seemed smaller than the downstairs, but it still had good amounts of seating. The windows were really big here too, giving the customers a beautiful view from up above. And yes, the view was pretty amazing, you got to see the bridge, downtown, and even the tram called Duquesne Incline taking people up and down the Mt. Washington as well. Super cool! Since we were having a business dinner, they had a semi-secluded space, where it can be used as a private event area. The walls were made out of glass, so we still had a nice view of the outside and it did not obstruct from the natural light coming in and flowing throughout the dining area. I started with a cocktail called Missed Connection, very refreshing. It had nice strawberry and ginger flavor, and had nice sweetness to it. They brought out nice amount of complimentary bread for the table, three different kinds: dinner rolls, onion breads (?), and foccacia breads. I had their foccacia bread and it was super tasty! It was one of the best foccacia bread I've ever had! The dinner was pre-set, three course. I chose She Crab Bisque, Chilean Sea Bass, and Carrot Cake. They were all super fresh, high quality, and delicious. Much better than I expected. Full of flavor, very nicely plated, and I enjoyed them all. The staffs were really great, very patient with our large group. They were friendly, polite, and we were well taken care of. 4.5 stars, but rounding up to 5 stars! A group of us made a reservation at Altius to celebrate a special event after hearing all the good things about this restaurant from a friend of ours. All of us aren't from Pittsburgh, so it's definitely a plus for a restaurant to be just a few steps away from another Pittsburgh's tourist spot like Duquesne Incline as well! The restaurant is also a popular spot, so make sure you make a reservation ahead of time. We were lucky to even snatch a table next to a window for early dinner, but even then our reservation was made a few months in advance. All of us ordered different dishes (I ordered duck breast) and, frankly, I was super happy with my food that I literally cleaned my plate (nothing left on my dish at all!). The duck done so perfectly that the skin was crisp but the meat still tender and it went well with the puree/vegetables (including an edible flower) that came with the dish. Best of all, the meat didn't smell or had awkward chewiness to it at all. I also tried other people's ribeye and lamb rack and thought the plate presentation was great and meats were cooked well (although I think the ribeye was slightly more towards medium vs. medium rare that we ordered). What I love also is that they have awesome complementary items such as fancy bread (to your choosing), complementary amuse-bouche (strawberry-pistachio mousse, house-flavored popcorn and truffle for you to try as well! Overall, a nice, upscale dining (and if you scored a table next to the window, with an awesome view, too!). Altius, December 2022, re-opened after someone drove a car into their building and ruined the facade. The food was incredible. The service was on point but stiff? Automatic gratuity for a party of six was surprising, but kudos to our server for bringing the check pad back to my husband after he re-tipped without noticing it. I miss the boxed bread service with choices, it was a really nice touch. Also, I get that the amuse is a gift from the kitchen but it would be nice if you didn't get an amuse of truffled potato soup after you have just finished ordering an app of truffled cauliflower soup. read more

My husband and I went for our one year wedding anniversary and it was the best decision we made. Everything was perfect from the food to the service(Do I even have to mention the view?! we weren't right against the glass and I would say it's the best view of Pittsburgh ) we had Angie as our server and she was amazing. She gave us great recommendations and really personalized our visit. Rob the manager even came by our table to see how things were going and stayed to chat with us. it was a splurge in our budget but everything made it worth it! Went to celebrate my folks anniversary. The entire staff were super friendly and the service was amazing, especially for having a party of 7. The food was wonderful. Had the beet salad for a starter, the lamb as my entree, and the wicked chocolate cake for dessert. Everything I had was wonderful and would order them all again. This was hands down one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. The wine was to die for, the food was exceptional, and the service was better than 5 stars. They brought us not one but TWO complimentary appetizers because it was his birthday and our anniversary in addition to TWO complimentary desserts. I've seen some reviews saying this place is too expensive, but I would have to disagree. You get exactly what you pay for and in combination with the view, it is WELL worth it. Made a reservation for two and we were seated on this strange banquette on the main floor...next to one other...staring at a table of four in front of us who were next to the window. It was a horrible seat. Felt like we were on display but also voyeurs watching everyone else, too. We asked to be moved and were told we could go upstairs but it would be in the back, which was perfectly fine. New table was much better, as was the new waiter. We ordered the charcuterie and crab toast. Both were decent, as was the house bread. I ordered the fish special (either halibut or grouper?) and my husband got the lamb. The fish special was very bland and mediocre at best. My husband enjoyed his lamb and it was cooked to the temperature he requested. The accompaniments were fine, but nothing to write home about. We also both had a cocktail, and they were solid. Overall, for a meal for two that came in just shy of $240 (before tip), we expected more. When we left, we both agreed that we'd enjoyed a lot of other spots in Pittsburgh at this price point much more. Seemed like they were resting on their laurels and relying on the view more than focusing on the flavors. We won't be back unless it's someone else booking and paying. C'est la vie! read more

Another issue was the lack of communication between the hostess and our waiter... I had called in hours earlier to make arrangements for a birthday celebration. You pay for the view. That is the long and short of it! My husband and I have been wanting to come here forever! We finally decided to come in and while the view was fun, the food was just not awesome. Two appetizers: tartare and crab point toast. The issue with the tartare is that the ratio of meat to toast was way off. The toast became soggy. So it was all- soft. The textures were all off. No yolk, no sauce, just a too thick patty of raw meat on a soggy piece of toast. The crab toast was alright- but the other flavors muffled the star of the app: the crab. Honestly- it would have been more delicious to just have a simple crab cocktail. The entrees: the strip steak was ok. The meat was high quality- the salt ratio was off, so the flavor of the steak didn't shine as much as it could have. The weirdest thing about the dish is that they PILED food all over- fries, green beans, carrots, all over each other and mixed in. It was really strange. The fries are good but they shouldn't likely be mixed with vegetables and piled like you are at TGI Fridays. The sea bass was cooked and seasoned well. So that was a high point. However, we ordered two shrimp to accompany it and they were rock hard and piled on a mustardish sauce which was - really awful. We could not even touch the shrimp after the first bite. The drinks were also an issue. My husband had a couple cocktails and I opted for non-alcohol options. I ordered a mock tail "dry spa" but they did not hear me correctly and gave me the alcohol version. As I cannot drink alcohol right now, I was just really relieved that the neon green drink was so unappetizing because I only took two sips. Obviously- the names of the drinks should be more distinct. Our waitress was pleasant but didn't seem to care when food was not touched. The took off the drink mistake but the manager didn't even bother to apologize or try to fix it in any way other than not charging me to the alcohol I did not order. Basically- they didn't not seem to care and we didn't want to make a scene since the place is tiny. We did not want dessert after all this because the thought of spending more money for eh food was not ideal. Come for the view and maybe/maybe a glass of wine at the bar? I was in Pittsburgh for a girls weekend and I am so glad that we splurged and decided to try this place for dinner on Saturday night. The views from our table perched up on the second floor were superb but everything about the experience was topnotch. We called to make a reservation earlier in the day and were not sure if they could fit us in but showed up at 8 pm as was suggested and were able to be accommodated. We assumed we would be stuck at a random table in the middle of the restaurant away from the floor to ceiling glass walls overlooking the city but no, ... we were given the best table in the house right up against the glass wall on the second floor and right in the middle of the restaurant. The hostess, bartender and waitstaff were top notch and added to the VIP feel of the evening. The meal started with a "complimentary" buffalo chicken bacon popcorn which was pretty tasty. The restaurant bottles their own water and offers both still and sparkling water. We opted for the still. We did not do a starter since we wanted to save space for dessert but had a few drinks to start. Between the three of us we had sangria, mountain top coffee (baileys and frangelico mix), and a drink called blackberry winter (which was a mix of Prosecco and blackberry puree), ... all of which were divine. We were so distracted by the amazing views that the waitress had to come back a few times before we were ready to order. We had the filet mignon and salmon risotto and had no regrets about our choices. The portions were so much larger than you would typically expect from a high end fancy restaurant like this one. Almost forgot about the bread offerings, ... a waitress walks around the restaurant dispensing fancy breads from a tray. Bread options included French baguette slices, focaccia and croissants served with a sun-dried tomato spread or an herb butter. As you can tell everything was just super fancy and divine (said with an English accent of course). We shared the deconstructed tiramisu for dessert and while it was okay it didn't impress me as much as I expected. Th meal was still pretty fabulous even with the less than perfect dessert experience. The restaurant is only open for dinner but the Duquesne Incline runs till past midnight so if you're not interested in driving you can park in the free lot at the bottom of the hill and take the ride up the hill and enjoy beautiful nighttime city views from their viewing area before walking next door to Altius and enjoying a lovely dinner. What amazing views!! My husband and I took the Duquesne Incline up to Mount Washington and we didn't know what to expect when we got to the top but immediately I saw the windows of this restaurant and had to go! We were dressed in pretty casual clothes but we were able to go in at sit at the bar. Danielle and Frank were our bartenders and they were awesome! We were so impressed with their service and the bar itself. It was probably the cleanest and most organized bar I have ever been too! We were super impressed! And the drinks were extremely reasonable, we had a dirty martini made with a local potato vodka. The drinks were all only $12...so reasonable especially with that view! We didn't eat anything but the food that was going by looked delicious...the steak, the pork chops...wow! They even have popcorn and a bread tray that they walk around with...it looked pretty fantastic! If we were to visit again, we would definitely eat there!!! read more

I was really happy that this restaurant has all the little extra details fancy restaurants usually include including: an amuse bouche, popcorn compliments of the chef and even a cute little take home treat which was a brownie/cookie bar. The amuse was delightful, a little oyster with seaweed. It tasted delightful. The bread service was also excellent. There was three choices to choose from and the server presented the options beautifully in a white tray. I was able to choose whatever I wanted. I got the maple croissant and the focaccia bread. The spreads were an herbed butter and a tomato spread which were both great. This place oozes fancy. From the view outside, to the beautiful details such as the lighting and art, there was no inch of Altius that lacked refinement. The food was wonderful. Very generous portions and beautiful presentation. I ordered- All the options of the caviar, the lobster thermidor, salmon poke and duck ravioli.. along with two desserts- the 14k and the seasonal truffles. The food was great! But nothing was the best dish I've ever had. The caviar was great very classic presentation and delicious. The lobster thermidor was tasty however, it was nothing special. I liked the flavors and presentation of the salmon poke. I do wish that the rice underneath the salmon would've been more "sushi rice" like. I felt like it just tasted like normal rice with a slight stickiness- no vinegar taste at all. The duck ravioli had the best presentation. I was super pleased with it. There was a good amount of duck inside the raviolis and outside. The flavors and textures were pleasant however, I was so full that I was not able to eat all of the dish. However, I did have more room for dessert. The dessert was the best part of the service. One of the best presented desserts I've had in the city. The 14k honey dessert was very wonderful with unique and tasty textures. I really enjoyed it. Everything was very rich and full of flavor. The truffles were very beautiful. I did not think they were full of flavor, but I appreciate the effort that they put into them. I'm only saying that the customer service was ok because the host and I'm assuming the manager was a little cold when greeting me and my partner. They did not really greet us with a genuine smile or hello, it felt forced. As with all restaurants, you must enter with a mask, you can take it off while you're at the table, you must put it back on if you use the restroom or when you leave. They say there is a 2-hour time limit at the table, which is a reasonable amount of time. We were celebrating our anniversary and had a fabulous time. 5 stars for this giant view Pittsburgh hotspot! The view is second to none and the food was delicious, plentiful ( it's Pittsburgh so duh) and presented beautifully! My party of 4 delighted in 3 entrees but before I get there let's talk about the nibbles that were served before. First was a metal cone of " movie theater popcorn" . That's exactly what it tasted like but elevated somehow. There were no savory spices like I experienced when popcorn was served at Culver City's now closed A- frame, but I suspect special butter and salt were used because it was really good. . Then came the facacha with 2 spreadable- sun dried tomato dip and basil butter. Both a delight. The facacha was good but I like it when it's a bit more dense. Then came a salmon and mascarpone combo served in a cone . This was yummy too but it felt like bagels and lox in a mini ice cream cone. Yummy but without the tomato and onion your mouth expects- adorable presentation but so close I'd add some raw red onion and a bit of tomato. My entree was the halibut special. It came with a giant scallop and 2 shrimp all served on top of béarnaise . This was delectable and very filling. The others ordered a tomahawk pork chop which was one of the best chops I've ever had and not tough at all which pork chops can be and a rib eye steak cooked perfectly . We asked for med rare and got just that. For dessert we had vanilla and rum raisin ice cream. We went very basic because we were stuffed but didn't want to skip dessert entirely. I've eaten here several times and I just absolutely love it. From the atmosphere and the view to the service and food. It is elegant and classy but still relaxed and not stuffy. I've never had a bad meal and always look forward to coming back. Business casual attire. Valet for $7. I highly recommend making reservations. I most recently had the chicory salad followed by the sea bass with coconut curry. I love curry so I was drawn to it and it was perfect! If you like a little sweet on your salad, then you'll like the chicory salad which has pomegranate on it. The brussel sprouts were also phenomenal which made me happy because so many places totally ruin roasted brussel sprouts even though it shouldn't be hard to make. Topped with bacon and some of aioli, it was wonderful. My husband said his bone in rib eye was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing with the herbed butter. The apple crisp dessert was so creative and delicious and I can't recommend it enough! I typically prefer chocolate desserts but I'll take this dessert any day! The Good: Charcuterie and Seabass 10/10 The Ugly: Ordered the chefs special steak - came out dry and rubbery over cooked ( better meat found at Applebee's ) definitely not elevated food lol Even Worse: The cocktails - had a cucumber cocktail which tasted way too sweet like the juice was old or processed. I told my parents when I first moved to Pittsburgh, that I am going to save Altius for a special event and that is what we did. When they came into town to visit me we were celebrating their 42nd wedding anniversary and some big personal happenings in my life. It was a time to celebrate and enjoy and Altius was the perfect location. I have to say the biggest surprise here was the portion sizes. We all had enough to take home as leftovers which is rare for a restaurant of this price and quality. My mom had the scallops and my dad the pork chop. I opted for a steak because I always like trying the steak the first time I am at a fancy restaurant. The wine was wonderful and they did a great job presenting the desert as well. This is a favorite spot for sunset dining. You'll want reservations well in advance. It's right next to the Duquesne incline so the view and the popularity is great. Cocktails are top notch. If you can't stay for dinner, get the bisque or a Caesar at the bar. Or s'mores dessert - wow! The chef sends out treats to the guests, too. My wife and I had dinner here for our Anniversary on a Saturday night. I made reservations a month ahead of time. I knew they had valet parking so we went for it. It was $7. We walked in and were warmly greeted. We were about 10 minutes early but they took us right to our table. We were on the bottom floor in the middle of the floor at a two seater. We didn't get a window seat but it still was a spectacular view. Next time I will have to ask to get a window seat. I liked this restaurant because we weren't too close together to other tables. It wasn't that far but in other nice restaurants they really cram you in and we didn't feel like that here. Also we came at the perfect time at 630. In the fall time we could see the sun light shining on the city and then the sun set into evening while we were here. It was perfect. Service was slow but very top notched. We weren't in a rush and you shouldn't be when you are here. Sit back and enjoy yourself. It wasn't too slow of service but it's slow. We pretty much knew what we wanted to order so we started with their Grass fed steak tartare. My wife got their version of a Old fashion for her drink and I ordered a Sazerac. My drink was good but I usually enjoy my Sazy's with some whiskey and this one lacked it. It was good but not the best. Our starter dish came in and it was really good. It hit the spot. The steak Tartare was very flavorful. It was a great starter dish for the night. The bread service came through and we ate some bread. My wife really wanted Duck for her Entrée but they didn't have it this time so she went with the Sea Bass. I had my eyes on the Pork Duroc Pork Shop. I'm glad I ordered it! So our Entrees came after a little bit of time waiting but still we just enjoyed ourselves and it wasn't too long. Both of our dished looked amazing. My Pork was cooked perfectly and it was really good. Delicious. Might be the best Pork Chop I have ever had. We looked over the dessert menu but decided to pass. We will not go to this restaurant again. My girlfriend and I went to Altius today for dinner and we were very unsatisfied. The service is just terrible. I made the reservation more than one week ago and I specifically said that I want a table with a view in my reservation. What they gave us? A table in the center of the room. What makes it worse is that the view is completely blocked by two reflective glasses (set up in the middle of the room probably due to Covid reasons). The entire time we were there, the only view my girlfriend can see is her own reflection on these glasses. We were very unhappy and it's a complete waste of money. Of course, we told our server that we reserved a table with a view and asked why we got such a bad table and whether we can switch. He outright refused and said reservation cannot reserve specific tables. So we thought we might just be unlucky. But then customers at tables by the window began to leave, so these tables by the window became vacant. Therefore we asked again whether we can switch tables. This time, the waiter told us, these tables are reserved! How ridiculous! There were 2 or 3 tables that became vacant and the server never helped us switch. What makes us mad is that we noticed a group of four, who were seated in a table with equally bad views. We heard them complaining to the staff too about their table. And after 10~15 minutes, they were able to switch to a nice table by the window. We arrived earlier than them and we requested to switch to a nicer table before they were even seated. And why couldn't we switch to a nicer table, while they can? We felt our request was completely ignored by our server. We were not respected by the restaurant. Altius is not one of those restaurants that pay detailed attention to diners' requests. Its service is terrible. It is a cheap $20 restaurant with a high-end facade. We regret going there so much. With that level of service and without the view, you can get better food at $20 in strip district or squirrel hill. Save your money. read more

Took the Duquesne Incline to the top.. was looking for a place to have a cocktail and maybe an appetizer... stumbled into Altius and as if the view wasn't enough, were doubly blown away by the food and the service. One of the best experiences we've EVER had! We ordered the meatball app and the crab toast... YUM! And then had the Sea-bass and Strip Steak for entree.. followed by Coconut Chocolate dessert, which was the BEST dessert I've personally ever had... and also had the Lemon tart, which was very good, but compared to the Coconut Chocolate number, was a distant 2nd! I could go on and on, but what an amazing experience. We got there around 530pm and saw the sunset and city lights turn on.. Highly recommend a trip here anytime you are in Pittsburgh.
