Tried Alturas today and I need more people to know about this cafe!! The theme is modern Mexican and is decorated beautifully, you can tell how much thought was put into every single detail! They offer breakfast/lunch I had the breakfast torta with a limonada and had to stop myself from also ordering the horchata because both taste so fresh. None of that powder mix BS this is quality ingredients. The food was delicious, they even had some of the best Green salsa I've tried. Houston is a wacky city. One place will open and get crowds from day one. Another, offering the same quality of food will be empty. In the Heights, Las Alturas has hit the ground running and has established itself very quickly as a go to venue. On their menu, they feature a mole casera called Origen. I want to try it. But today , I opted for a pambazo, which I incorrectly associated with the Yucatán. And so, today, I decided to "do my research" lol. Google AI states "...The origins of the pambazo date back to the viceregal period of Mexico (16th to 19th centuries) and trace to the Ladino word pan basso (Spanish: pan bajo or "low-class bread"). It was a humble, economical bread reserved for the lower classes, made from lower-quality flour or leftover wheat. Mexico City even had specialized bakeries (pambacerías) that solely produced this coarse, flour-dusted bread.The sandwich itself is tied to two vastly different origin stories:The Imperial Legend: Another popular legend claims the pambazo was created in Orizaba, Veracruz during the 1860s. The story goes that Empress Carlota, wife of Emperor Maximilian I, commissioned chef Joseph Tüdös to invent a dish inspired by the majestic, snow-capped Pico de Orizaba volcano. Pricing is VERY FAIR. Almost too fair for this quality of food. Other places charge much more for food that is not this good. There is love and soul in the kitchen for sure. I was told that the family is from Puebla. Two dishes , famous in Puebla are chanclas Poblanas and enchiladas Augustinas. I wonder if they would make those with a special request? Plenty of parking. I like that the space is small. Here is hoping that helps them keep overhead costs down while still being able to fill the tables all of the time. We had a bit of a mixed experience here -- definitely some highlights, but also a few areas that need improvement. The good: The coffee was great, and the barista was quick and very kind. Most of the food was enjoyable as well. The rojo chilaquiles weren't particularly spicy, but the flavor was still just right. My only note there is that it came with one slice of avocado. Prices were okay. The not-so-good: Some of the food arrived cold. While the fried items were hot and fresh, the rice and beans were noticeably cold, which was disappointing. Service overall also left something to be desired. The full experience: When we arrived, we learned it was counter service where you place your entire order upfront. That's totally fine in itself, but what made things confusing was the seating policy. Guests weren't allowed to sit until after ordering, so even if part of your group was waiting in line, the rest couldn't grab a table -- we (and others) were asked to move multiple times. This might have worked if it were applied consistently, but it wasn't. At the same time, staff was reserving tables for groups who hadn't even arrived yet. So what started as a "first come, first served" system wasn't consistently practiced. On top of that, it became even more frustrating when we were told we couldn't order because there were no open tables. To avoid the confusion, we decided to order our food to go and were told that if a table opened up, we could take it. However, when a table did become available, we were then told we couldn't sit there (a 2-top) because a larger group had arrived (after us) and they needed the seating. That inconsistency made the experience feel even more disorganized, resulting in a disjointed and frustrating visit. If the restaurant plans to reserve tables while also restricting seating, it would make much more sense to have a host managing seating. Alternatively, a straightforward seating policy without reservations would also work. Trying to do both at once just didn't work. Given these issues, along with the food arriving cold, I likely wouldn't return. read more

I was looking for a Mexican restaurant to come try with my mother through TikTok and Google and was recommended this establishment. The ambiance is nice but the seating and restaurant is small. You order through the register and then get a number and wait for your order. I ordered the Chilaquiles in salsa roja and a coffee ( $3 and was advertised as columbian.) As soon as it was sat down in my table i could smell that it was Fo Folger's. I knew by that smell my drink was going to be distasteful. I'm not upset, I got played, this coffee costs maybe .05 cents to make and i bought it for $3. The chilaquiles were great, just the portion for the price ... I don't know. read more

Location is hidden and the cecina plate with papa and frijoles($15) I don't think it's worth the price. I came with my bf and literally look like 1 big cecina was cut into two for me and him, that's how small the portion was for each lol. The horchata was ok a bit watered down not the thick kind of horchata iykyk. Service was quick just drop off plates you don't really have a server. Popped in here after a nice bike ride and wanted a little brunch. New restaurant that opened so everything we neat, clean and in its place. Walked up to the counter and ordered them had a seat. Ordered the agua fresca which was very refreshing. My friend ordered the Mexican Burger with fries and he said he very much enjoyed it and the fries came out hot and crispy. I had the shredded chicken enchiladas with a verde sauce. Was very good and satisfying. The wait staff was kind and friendly. I would definitely come back again since the food is made to order and not expensive. I would come back and try more. Also there is parking so that's a bonus. read more

It was close to 9am, I was so excited to try this new spot for us (mom and me) but unfortunately we could not even make it in to try the place out. I have read the reviews and understand that's it a small family owned restaurant but for those who need wheelchair accommodation this may not be a place for it. The entry to the restaurant is not accessible very well as there is table near it and the line to order is crowded with the rope guard and tables around it. No tables available and Room to even wait is to be desired. Might have to try to order and take to go next time. read more

My friend suggested this place for breakfast today and maaaan, it was so good. The girly who placed our order was super sweet. She was quick to check in on my friend who was having cafe de olla btw (super good). I had the chilaquiles de mole poblano and they were GREAT! Food is always excellent. The charro beans are fantastic brought back many memories of when I was a child. Their mole though, on another level! It's sweet and savory hits home every single time! This restaurant is in the vicinity of Farmer's Market and El Bolillo. I like to try new restaurants and I wasn't disappointed. To begin, they have good parking space. As we walked in, we were warmly greeted by the owners. As for the food, I only have good things to say. I ordered the street tacos with al pastor meat and it came with delicious frijoles a la charra. I tried my husbands milanesa, and that was yummy. I also had a sample of their mole sauce and it was very good! It wasn't bitter like some i have tasted. Visiting the Houston area and came across Altura's Mexican Cafe on google maps. Very clean and organized establishment. We were greeted so kindly upon entering. The food was DELICIOUS I can't begin to tell you guys. I ordered tacos, expecting the tortillas to be out of a bag (as most places) but they make their tortillas from scratch!
