This is an extraordinary little gem in a out of the way location, but worth the trip even if you are not local. After seeing the ad for Alys' in the local paper for years, we finally tried it and loved it! Fantastic food, charming ambiance and super friendly folks. They have a limited menu and extensive wine list, but everything was delicious! To fully appreciate the experience, you have to shed your expectations of a traditional fine dining experience. This is more like going to your favorite Aunt's house for dinner who happens to be a gourmet cook and talented wine collector. The place is literally a residential building. Walk in the front door of the house into a front room that houses a awesome (and great priced) wine collection, then you are seated in a modest but comfortable dining room. We were handed a wine list before a menu and then after the wine was poured, the server verbally shared the few entre options (no prices). I had the NY strip, my wife ordered the grilled tuna, and both were outstanding. No appetizers offered, but your meal comes with a choice of soup or salad. Nice dessert options. The vibe is definitely more private dinner party than commercial enterprise. The bill was startingly modest. Reservations are required, and Alys treats everyone like a personal guest whether you know her well or just met her. Enjoy! read more

This was truly one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. Shortly after we walked in we were welcomed and offered the choice of sitting indoors or on the patio, we chose the patio. Our server (unfortunately I don't remember his name) asked if we wanted a wine list but we decided against it (my grandmother ended up getting the cab later, one of the smoothest wines she has ever had and it was only 6 dollars). He brought out our antipasto which was a tomato pesto (forgot the name unfortunately), sheep cheese, and Chinese 5 seasoned pork with fresh bread, truly delicious. Our appetizer choices were house salad or New England clam chowder, my grandmother got the salad I got the clam chowder, I have to admit I was a little skeptical when it came out, I prefer a thicker clam chowder, but this was truly one of the best clam chowders I have ever had, and I am from a costal state. My grandmother loved her salad. It is an entirely verbal menu, he gave us 7ish (maybe 8 lol) different options, I went with the Duck confit with a blackberry currant glaze, jasmine rice, and brown beech mushroom and green bean. My grandmother had the teriyaki pork loin chop on jasmine rice paired with the beech mushroom and green beans. I have been to France, Italy, Germany, the UK, Gordon Ramseys Hell's Kitchen, and other Michelin restaurants. When I say this is truly the best piece of poultry I have ever consumed, I mean it. It was tender but not mushy, the rice was cooked perfectly and the glaze brought just enough sweetness and tartness to balance the fat from the duck. It was one of the only meals I have ever consumed and absolutely loved every aspect of. I don't even like mushrooms and I ate every single one. My grandmother loved her food, she has been having some slight stomach issues and she said it felt very good to her body. The loin was evidently pulled just before 145, allowing it to rest and remain extra, extraordinarily juicy and tender, the teriyaki sauce was sweet but not too sweet, it had just the perfect amount of tang as well as notes of ginger I believe. For desert we had the crème brûlée which was extraordinary, one of the best I have ever had. I talked with the head chef (he went to a culinary school in Scottsdale Arizona), and he was a very kind man who brought out our crème brûlée personally to us. If you are hearing all of this and thinking "man this is out of my price range" it is priced at $40 dollars for the antipasto, the soup/salad, and the entree, which is absolutely ludicrous for this quality of food, they could easily charge 60-80 a plate. I highly recommend you give this place a try. read more

My family has been coming to La Veta every summer for almost 30 years now. We're from Dallas & Houston and love having a getaway out in the country, but it's always so wonderful to a nice out with a truly fine meal! The service is always immaculate; everyone is kind and Aly herself is always wonderful to chat with when she has the time. It has gorgeous patio and indoor seating, a fabulous wine selection, and I believe is wheelchair accessible as well. I have nothing but positive things to say about this place! If you are ever ANYWHERE near La Veta, CO you MUST visit Alys' restaurant. We were looking for a place to celebrate our anniversary while on the road and decided to try Alys'. It was PHENOMENAL! We had lemon drops and an old fashioned (10 out of 10), the teriyaki pork chop and bistro steak and the amazing sides were *chef's kiss*! They were delicious. This was such a special experience! My husband and I stayed in Cuchara with my parents and went to enjoy a meal here. Made reservations (important as it's a nice intimate dining experience). Alys was an amazing and welcoming hostess. Everything on the menu sounded delicious. I had the half rack of lamb, garlic butter mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus. It was yummy! Dessert was the chocolate whiskey pudding. Yum! Alys has a full bar and wine list as well as a good beer selection. Our waiter was also amazing. We've heard about Alys' Restaurant from friends raving about her food. They were spot on, maybe even undersold it. I started with the soup which was delicious and light. For my entree I ordered the ravioli with mushrooms and side of corn and it was amazing. Homemade ravioli with a mushroom ragu that was rich and flavorful. My friends had the T-bone steaks and said they were tender & cooked to perfection. I had the homemade apple cake for dessert and wish I had Alys' recipe, it was delicious. A hidden gem in La Veta, Colorado. We visited on a whim while camping near Cuchara and were delighted to find a warm atmosphere, delicious food, and second-to-none service. The menu is relayed verbally by the servers and it included a nice selection of beef, fish, lamb, and a no-meat option. The stars finally aligned for us to dine at Alys in LaVeta two nights in a row! What a treat to have such fabulous meals....rack of lamb cooked to perfection, tender lamb shanks both served with melt in your mouth mashed potatoes & asparagus. Second time we enjoyed the tender, oven braised cod and succulent chicken breast. Extensive and reasonably priced wine list with Als herself offering excellent suggestions to accompany our meals. Save room for dessert, German chocolate cake (a rare find) and a delicious plum tart . Staff are friendly, engaging and Alys takes time to chat with the diners. Two for Service and four for food. I am a semi-regular customer eating at Alys' several times per year. The food is up-scale with menu items that you will not find in chain restaurants. Aly is very creative with the menu. The last few times I dined there my experience was less than satisfactory. The meat was a little tough, but the glazing was amazing. The food overall including the sides and desert was good but the service was unsatisfactory. We had reservations and requested a certain dish in advance but when we arrived we were told the dish was not available. We were asked to choose a different item. It was extremely hot in the restaurant. We were given water when we arrived and asked for more throughout the meal, but never received the water even after asking several times. Fortunately, we had some water in our car we had after we left. They were busy, but very slow at responding so we ended up spending much more time in the restaurant than we should have - 2 hours. When we asked for the check, the servers checked out other tables that arrived after us. I gave a 15% tip, which is lower than what I usual give because of the service but is still generous considering the service. The servers have a tendency to hover over you while you choose your tip which makes you feel a bit uncomfortable. We had a bill of about $200 because we had a nice bottle of wine, so 15% was still a nice tip. I didn't get a thank you when I paid, which seems a little rude and entitled. I am only writing this review because the past few times I have been in there I've had a similar experience with the service. If you spend $200 plus tip on a meal, I expect better. I'm sure if/when I will go back. read more

I felt she might have had a bad day, and I decided to call again and left a message. The lady called back and again was highly unprofessional. Alys Restaurant does not disappoint. We both had the rack of lamb. It was outstanding! The mash potatoes were the best we have ever had. For desert we both had the peach melba 1/2 fresh peach with some slices, a huge scoop of blackberry sorbet (very yummy and added extra flavor to the peach) and dollops of whipped cream. I couldn't finish the lamb and peach desert so took home. The lamb the next day was still delicious and the peach melba - well the sorbet had melted and mingled with the whip cream and the peach was swimming in this sauce. It was even better. Was very impressed. The food was delicious and the drinks flowed well. The menu changes weekly, so you can't see it beforehand. I had the salad with goddess dressing and a half rack of lamb. The mint jelly was delicious. We were a party of 4 so we ordered 4 different desserts to share. It worked out well. The carrot cake was good, but the chocolate bread pudding was AMAZING! Alys was so very friendly and kept checking on us to make sure everything was ok. I am definitely going back. Very solid location and good quality food. The location has a good wine selection for a smaller establishment. The menu is small which is good as the chef doesn't have to focus on a lot of different choices. We had the ravioli and lamb which was fantastic. Aly's' Restaurant is a must if you are in the Cuchara area! Not only is the food delicious, but the atmosphere is unique. Alys makes all of the food herself and the menu is limited but it sure to have something for everyone - there was even a vegan option. She greets everyone and explains the menu as well. The setting is an old home that at one point was an art gallery that is now a restaurant. The seating is in what would be the living room to the house and there is a beautiful patio as well. The bathroom features a hand-painted claw- foot tub and is a great photo-op. Reservations are a must - there are only 8 tables in the main dining area and they only seat guests between 5:30 and 7:30 PM. read more
