This was truly one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Shortly after we walked in we were welcomed and offered the choice of sitting indoors or on the patio, we chose the patio.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our server (unfortunately I don't remember his name) asked if we wanted a wine list but we decided against it (my grandmother ended up getting the cab later, one of the smoothest wines she has ever had and it was only 6 dollars). He brought out our antipasto which was a tomato pesto (forgot the name unfortunately), sheep cheese, and Chinese 5 seasoned pork with fresh bread, truly delicious. Our appetizer choices were house salad or New England clam chowder, my grandmother got the salad I got the clam chowder, I have to admit I was a little skeptical when it came out, I prefer a thicker clam chowder, but this was truly one of the best clam chowders I have ever had, and I am from a costal state. My grandmother loved her salad. It is an entirely verbal menu, he gave us 7ish (maybe 8 lol) different options, I went with the Duck confit with a blackberry currant glaze, jasmine rice, and brown beech mushroom and green bean. My grandmother had the teriyaki pork loin chop on jasmine rice paired with the beech mushroom and green beans. I have been to France, Italy, Germany, the UK, Gordon Ramseys Hell's Kitchen, and other Michelin restaurants. When I say this is truly the best piece of poultry I have ever consumed, I mean it. It was tender but not mushy, the rice was cooked perfectly and the glaze brought just enough sweetness and tartness to balance the fat from the duck. It was one of the only meals I have ever consumed and absolutely loved every aspect of. I don't even like mushrooms and I ate every single one. My grandmother loved her food, she has been having some slight stomach issues and she said it felt very good to her body. The loin was evidently pulled just before 145, allowing it to rest and remain extra, extraordinarily juicy and tender, the teriyaki sauce was sweet but not too sweet, it had just the perfect amount of tang as well as notes of ginger I believe. For desert we had the crème brûlée which was extraordinary, one of the best I have ever had. I talked with the head chef (he went to a culinary school in Scottsdale Arizona), and he was a very kind man who brought out our crème brûlée personally to us. If you are hearing all of this and thinking "man this is out of my price range" it is priced at $40 dollars for the antipasto, the soup/salad, and the entree, which is absolutely ludicrous for this quality of food, they could easily charge 60-80 a plate. I highly recommend you give this place a try. read more

If you are ever ANYWHERE near La Veta, CO you MUST visit Alys' restaurant. We were looking for a place to celebrate our anniversary while on the road and decided to try Alys'. It was PHENOMENAL! We had lemon drops and an old fashioned (10 out of 10), the teriyaki pork chop and bistro steak and the amazing sides were *chef's kiss*! They were delicious. This was such a special experience! My husband and I stayed in Cuchara with my parents and went to enjoy a meal here. Made reservations (important as it's a nice intimate dining experience). Alys was an amazing and welcoming hostess. Everything on the menu sounded delicious. I had the half rack of lamb, garlic butter mashed potatoes and steamed asparagus. It was yummy! We've heard about Alys' Restaurant from friends raving about her food. They were spot on, maybe even undersold it. I started with the soup which was delicious and light. For my entree I ordered the ravioli with mushrooms and side of corn and it was amazing. Homemade ravioli with a mushroom ragu that was rich and flavorful. My friends had the T-bone steaks and said they were tender & cooked to perfection. I had the homemade apple cake for dessert and wish I had Alys' recipe, it was delicious. A hidden gem in La Veta, Colorado. We visited on a whim while camping near Cuchara and were delighted to find a warm atmosphere, delicious food, and second-to-none service. The stars finally aligned for us to dine at Alys in LaVeta two nights in a row! What a treat to have such fabulous meals....rack of lamb cooked to perfection, tender lamb shanks both served with melt in your mouth mashed potatoes & asparagus. Second time we enjoyed the tender, oven braised cod and succulent chicken breast. Extensive and reasonably priced wine list with Als herself offering excellent suggestions to accompany our meals. Two for Service and four for food. I am a semi-regular customer eating at Alys' several times per year. The food is up-scale with menu items that you will not find in chain restaurants. Aly is very creative with the menu. The last few times I dined there my experience was less than satisfactory. The meat was a little tough, but the glazing was amazing. The food overall including the sides and desert was good but the service was unsatisfactory. We had reservations and requested a certain dish in advance but when we arrived we were told the dish was not available. We were asked to choose a different item. It was extremely hot in the restaurant. We were given water when we arrived and asked for more throughout the meal, but never received the water even after asking several times. Fortunately, we had some water in our car we had after we left. They were busy, but very slow at responding so we ended up spending much more time in the restaurant than we should have - 2 hours. When we asked for the check, the servers checked out other tables that arrived after us. I gave a 15% tip, which is lower than what I usual give because of the service but is still generous considering the service. The servers have a tendency to hover over you while you choose your tip which makes you feel a bit uncomfortable. We had a bill of about $200 because we had a nice bottle of wine, so 15% was still a nice tip. I didn't get a thank you when I paid, which seems a little rude and entitled. I am only writing this review because the past few times I have been in there I've had a similar experience with the service. If you spend $200 plus tip on a meal, I expect better. I'm sure if/when I will go back. read more

I felt she might have had a bad day, and I decided to call again and left a message. The lady called back and again was highly unprofessional. Alys Restaurant does not disappoint. We both had the rack of lamb. It was outstanding! The mash potatoes were the best we have ever had. For desert we both had the peach melba 1/2 fresh peach with some slices, a huge scoop of blackberry sorbet (very yummy and added extra flavor to the peach) and dollops of whipped cream. I couldn't finish the lamb and peach desert so took home. The lamb the next day was still delicious and the peach melba - well the sorbet had melted and mingled with the whip cream and the peach was swimming in this sauce. It was even better. Was very impressed. The food was delicious and the drinks flowed well. The menu changes weekly, so you can't see it beforehand. I had the salad with goddess dressing and a half rack of lamb. The mint jelly was delicious. We were a party of 4 so we ordered 4 different desserts to share. It worked out well. The carrot cake was good, but the chocolate bread pudding was AMAZING! Alys was so very friendly and kept checking on us to make sure everything was ok. I am definitely going back. Very solid location and good quality food. The location has a good wine selection for a smaller establishment. The menu is small which is good as the chef doesn't have to focus on a lot of different choices. We had the ravioli and lamb which was fantastic. The lamb was so mild that I would recommend taming down the sauce (mint salsa verde) for the lamb. We would go back anytime. read more

Aly's' Restaurant is a must if you are in the Cuchara area! Not only is the food delicious, but the atmosphere is unique. Alys makes all of the food herself and the menu is limited but it sure to have something for everyone - there was even a vegan option. She greets everyone and explains the menu as well. The setting is an old home that at one point was an art gallery that is now a restaurant. The seating is in what would be the living room to the house and there is a beautiful patio as well. The bathroom features a hand-painted claw- foot tub and is a great photo-op. Reservations are a must - there are only 8 tables in the main dining area and they only seat guests between 5:30 and 7:30 PM. read more

This is the best restaurant in Huerfano County hands down! My husband and I have eaten here a half-dozen times and have always enjoyed it. Alys' has a warm, homey ambiance with very friendly service. The steaks and rack of lamb are always first rate and cooked to order. The mashed potatoes are fantastic! The desserts are consistently delicious and the coffee is fresh-brewed and piping hot. Our biggest critique would be that we wish they provided patrons with a menu. They always have plenty to chose from and it's difficult to remember all the choices when they are called out by the server. Or, maybe they could have a standard menu and the server just goes over the weekly specials. It's nice to dine and take your time picking your entree. People enjoy talking about the menu with friends and family and what they plan on ordering. The restaurant has a nice wine list however, it would be helpful if patrons could order their wine after making their entree selections in order to better pair the wine with their meal. Also, we noticed that our green vegetable side was consistently cooked in the microwave. It would be great if the greens were grilled right next to the meat. It would provide additional umami to the entrees. At some point during your meal, Alys typically comes to your table to say hello and see if you are enjoying your food. It is truly a lovely place.
