This is the best restaurant in Huerfano County hands down! My husband and I have eaten here a half-dozen times and have always enjoyed it. Alys' has a warm, homey ambiance with very friendly service. The steaks and rack of lamb are always first rate and cooked to order. The mashed potatoes are fantastic! The desserts are consistently delicious and the coffee is fresh-brewed and piping hot. Our biggest critique would be that we wish they provided patrons with a menu. They always have plenty to chose from and it's difficult to remember all the choices when they are called out by the server. Or, maybe they could have a standard menu and the server just goes over the weekly specials. It's nice to dine and take your time picking your entree. People enjoy talking about the menu with friends and family and what they plan on ordering. The restaurant has a nice wine list however, it would be helpful if patrons could order their wine after making their entree selections in order to better pair the wine with their meal. Also, we noticed that our green vegetable side was consistently cooked in the microwave. It would be great if the greens were grilled right next to the meat. It would provide additional umami to the entrees. At some point during your meal, Alys typically comes to your table to say hello and see if you are enjoying your food. It is truly a lovely place. If I could I would give a lower rating. This place thinks to highly of themselves my wife and I ordered a take out meal we were charged the same rate for our dinner as if we were set in dinner. The meal was served on styrofoam plates and we were charged about $40 per plate, $80 for a picnic dinner when we ate at DJ Streak House in Pueblo we paid $50 for two gine steak dinner. So do not waste your money here. As the mesl gave diarrhea for 2 days 2 hours after I eat. read more

What an amazing little jewel in such a small little town like La Veta! It's a very intimate setting that gives you the feeling that Aly is simply hosting you in her home for supper. The ingredients are fresh and the tastes are amazing! Tonight I had the smoky bleu cheese soup, a salad and the bone in New York strip steak. My companions had the rack of lamb and paprika chicken and everything was prepared exceptionally well. Alys' has become our Thanksgiving tradition - we've come here for the holiday four times now, and each time has satisfied every wish. It feels like home, it tastes fabulous, and we often see others who've been here on previous Thanksgivings. It's a simple but beautiful room with eight or ten tables, so it's intimate. The staff are so considerate, yet willing to crack a joke if it feels right. Alys circulates among the tables. Thanksgiving offerings are traditional with an occasional twist, such as the fresh cranberry relish instead of a cooked sauce or jelly. If you have dietary needs, the staff and Alys will go out of their way to accommodate you. There's a lengthy wine list and we had a choice among eight desserts (which probably dwindle as the day goes on - we always come for the first seating). When you leave, you feel as though you're in a Currier and Ives town - La Veta is small, quiet, and full of charming old houses. read more

I visited Alys' for the first time this past Thursday for a family member's birthday and we were offered at least 10 entrees to choose from, all of which sounded delicious. The ones we selected definitely were! However, even more notable was the special attention and care I received from Alys personally as I have several food sensitivities. She ensured that I knew exactly which items on the menu would be safe options for me and even provided me with a gluten free side that was not on the menu that evening. Additionally, our family member with a birthday received a free dessert! I can't say enough good things about Alys and her charming restaurant! We had such a lovely evening dining with friends at Alys' restaurant. Such a treat to have tried so many things. The mushroom soup was incredible (and don't forget to have a margarita!!). I had the full rack of lamb chops and somehow finished most of them before being coaxed into the brownie sundae which I don't regret. (I didn't)Surprise, there was a table available. My little sirloin was ok ,I thought a little over priced at $30. Service was good. Such an incredible find in the small town of La Veta. Aly is awesome, very welcoming, and social will all her guests. I am so glad she opened this house-based restaurant. The interior is small and upscale dining experience, much like you would find in trendy spots like Boulder and Fort Collins. I stayed at a local AirBnB on my way to NM, and very happy my host recommended Aly's. I started with her Thai Peanut soup. I love anything with peanuts and this incredible compilation was a creamy and peanut paradise. For the main course I went with the bone-in ribeye and I am glad I did. It was the most delicious ribeye I have EVER had, and that's not a light complement. I've eaten at much touted steak joints including Mickeys and Elway's in Denver and this steak was impeccable and a much better price. Ally said she marinades the steaks in a soy sauce-based mix for two days and the result is incredible. I added Asparagus and Garlic Mash Potatoes as sides and it was a perfect ensemble. To put this in perspective, I am willing to drive from Fort Collins South to La Veta (242 miles) JUST to have this again! Paired with a wonderful Argentinian Malbec and this meal was simply incredible. Another incredible feature is the wine list. Aly's chooses to sell her Bottles at just over cost. That means my entire bottle was only $20 for a delicious Malbec that just a glass anywhere else would cost at least $8. The steak was so big (over 16 oz) I had to take half home. To finalize, I enjoyed a piece Aly's fresh Tiramisu. It was a a pure piece of heaven paired with fresh brewed coffee. So stuffed at the end, I had to take a late nite stroll around peaceful La Veta. There was a full moon out and I could hear the coyotes yipping in the hills nearby. Such a a wonderful, classy restaurant in a small town...truly a jewel you won't want to miss. One last note...if you do plan on dining at Aly's, make sure and call ahead. Most nights she is booked solid with reservations. That can't be said for other dining options in La Veta and nearby Cuchara. That's always a mark of just how truly exceptional the dining is. read more

Best high end dining for 50 miles. Alys does it right. The food is always fresh, and interesting. The entrees are always excellent. And dessert - well, the brownie sunday was impressive, and the creme brulee was perfect (soft underneath, and crunchy on top!). A very pleasant experience. This is a dining club. You MUST have a reservation. It seats 14. Seatings are at 5:30 and 7:30 pm. No walk ins, it iis not a restaurant. This is also NOT a place for kids. I don't know where to begin - everything about this place is amazing!! We often vacation in Cuchara, so it's very exciting to have Alys' Restaurant in the area. All of the menu is prepared each day depending on the quality of meats. It's not printed, so the waitress tells you the specials which include about 6 varieties of meats and a vegetarian option. All of the entrees are served with a salad with homemade dressing or soup and the most delicious homemade bread! We ended up going twice in the week. The first night we had rack of lamb, which was cooked perfectly with wonderful flavor and veggies on the side. We had the creme brûlée and whiskey pudding for dessert, which were so awesome!! The second night we went with a group. I had the Cornish game hen, which was prepared with rice and veggies - it was delicious. My husband had the ahi tuna steak with mashed potatoes and veggies, which was also cooked perfectly and had great flavor. We decided to share all 6 desserts, which were all fabulous!! We recommend the key lime pistachio torte, blondie or creme brûlée but you really can't go wrong!! Alys also has an extensive wine menu and works hard get the best quality items for a very enjoyable experience. Alys has a true gift & I can't wait to visit her next summer! read more

Wow, there's a ton of positive reviews here so I'm sorry to be the sole dissenter. I thought the food was fine, a little on the bland side, not much in the way of seasoning. I found it to be on par with food at Denny's or maybe Applebee's. Given that, I would have been fine if the price was $10-12 per plate. I was astounded to learn it was $25-30. Even with a salad, the food in no way justifies the price, especially in such a small town! I've had absolutely delicious dinners for two people that clocked in under $30! My husband and I stopped in here after a day at Great Sand Dunes National Park. It was absolutely delicious!! Alys (the owner) came around and talked with everyone in the restaurant, including us. The waitress told us the menu from memory. My husband had the rack of lamb and I had the New York strip. Both were delicious! Soup, dessert, and coffee were also included in the price of dinner; all of which were fantastic. The restaurant itself is small and quaint with a lot of art on the walls. Very nice atmosphere. I was visiting friends in Cuchara and they suggested dinner at Alys'. I'm glad we had a reservation, they were turning people away without reservations on a random Tuesday night! By any standards the food was excellent and service great. We had 4 different entries - lamb, pasta, chicken and I had beef ribs sliced horizontally with a Korean sauce - all outstanding! 3 of us started with borscht, served with a dollop of sour cream - it was perfect. The wine selection is terrific and the price range very reasonable. Alys, the owner and chef, was very engaging and spent time in the dining room and patio with her guests. We met friends from out of town. This was the first time we have eaten here as well. We sat on the patio and it was very pleasant. I had the full order of rack of lamb. It was cooked absolutely perfect. My wife had one of the chicken dishes and she said it was also great. All non-alcoholic drinks are included in the price of each dish. With 4 of us each having dinner and 2 appetizers and one glass of wine it was around $150. While it is not an inexpensive meal, it was well worth it with the quality of the food, atmosphere and non-intrusive wait staff. My family and I had the supreme pleasure of dining at Alys' Restaurant this evening. From the lovely outdoor setting, to the gracious, knowledgable waitress every step of the way, to Alys stopping by a number of times to chat personably delightfully, and ensure all was well, we were provided with a perfect setting for the piece de resistance: the outstanding food prepared and served in the finest manner! Each course was delectable and frankly this was the finest meal I've enjoyed since I moved to Colorado two years ago! We stopped in one night to try it out. We were staying in walsenburg and this was the best place we had heard about through word of mouth. It's a tiny home and it feels very welcoming. The owner herself is friendly and makes sure you are truly enjoying the whole night. The food was great, service was great , and the atmosphere was perfect. We were amazed to find a big city quality gourmet restaurant in a tiny town. 3 course prix fixe menu with every course made in house, with an extensive wine list. This small restaurant feels as homey as it really is. Alys lives here, and takes great pride in serving you well. We took a friend who lives in Walsenburg, and he was unprepared to find a restaurant in La Veta this good. La Veta is beautiful, and this restaurant could compete in Denver. All together this makes for a surprisingly romantic quiet getaway in the mountains away from the crowds in Aspen, Crested Butte, or Salida. read more

Being primarily a carnivore, I hold a pretty broad tolerance to what I consider rare (which should be a cool, pink center) but this was beyond done. Aly's is a wonderful restaurant! The owner and chef (Alys) has transformed an adobe house into a charming, intimate gathering place for exquisite meals served with a nicely curated wine selection. We took some out-of-town visitors there and had one of the best meals I can remember. Each of the meals ordered got high praise and the desserts were wonderful too! Wow! I've experienced restaurants all over the world and Aly's ranks at the very top. In a home atmosphere that was once an art studio. I ordered the rack of lamb that was as tasty as I've ever had. Served with three sides of veggies and mashed potatoes. The side salad came with an excellent blackberry vinegarette. Jackie had the swordfish. It was her first time having swordfish and she wasn't disappointed. Flown in fresh from Hawaii, a large portion cooked to perfection. All breads and desserts are baked fresh daily by Aly. Dinner, salads, and desserts came to $80 and worth every penny. read more
