I'm updating my review because I've been back several times since my first visit, and a few things have changed. When I first came here, the food was excellent but the service was... not. The place was busy -- maybe a dozen tables plus bar seating, and about 80% full -- but even with a busboy helping, the waiter/operator barely paid me any attention. Maybe it was the beard and the autumn work attire, maybe it was just bad timing, but I felt pretty ignored overall. I was so irritated that I only tipped fifty cents -- and that's saying something, because I always tip well. Fast forward to now: he's much better. It seems like he may have seen my original review (the 4-star one) and wasn't thrilled about it. Still, to his credit, the service has definitely improved, and the food remains phenomenal. On my return visits, I've tried the Western Omelette (pro tip: ask for it with their jalapeño cream cheese for a delicious kick!) and, for the first time ever, chicken and waffles. Both were fantastic -- and honestly, I'll probably never order chicken and waffles anywhere else again. Still, I always find myself coming back for the huevos rancheros. Funny story: I asked the owner/waiter about their huevos rancheros recipe. He told me it's been in the family for 45 years. The ingredients are surprisingly simple -- nothing fancy, not even cumin -- so either he's guarding a well-kept family secret, or his father, the cook, has simply perfected the art of turning ordinary ingredients into something extraordinary. As far as ambience, this place is just an ordinary, mountain diner. I love their floor though, and I would like to replicate it in the next cabin I build. read more

Such a great little diner! We were headed from Taos back to Denver and needed to grab food and decided to stop here. The service was so awesome and friendly! He mentioned how everything is homemade except for the chicken nuggets. The honesty was great and the way he knew the menu of what they had or didn't have was impeccable. I also appreciate his attentiveness even when the place filled up! Food was delicious!!!! Even something as simple as the French fries were so good! This was our second visit and we couldn't be happier to have a wonderful local gem! Service is great! We've now had three different omelets while enjoying this establishment and the amount of mushrooms in the western omelet is amazing along with their ranchero sauce and jalapeño cheese sauce! It's a very clean establishment and is a must stop in Fort Garland! The homemade cinnamon rolls are to die for and they serve alcohol, which is nice for those occasions. Avery has been extremely friendly every time and we look forward to our next visit. It's also nice to know that his dad does all the cooking and you can tell everything is made with care! Wow!! We drive through here on our way to Denver frequently and have never stopped in before. So, so glad we did. Then commenced to stop twice in three days. Incredible food. Please don't skip the chicken fried steak. Crispy outside, tender inside with amazing cream gravy. Also had the tender, flaky biscuits with eggs and fabulous hash browns. Everything was delicious. My husband ordered the country fried chicken that came with green beans, mashed potatoes and a soup or salad. He opted for the soup which was broccoli cheddar. My husband noted that everything was very good. For my 2 toddlers we got the chicken strip meal. The strips are hand breaded and were very clean and delicious tasting!! Somebody should tell the manager to buy fly paper or perhaps a small zapper from Amazon.com if Amazon delivers out here? You will even see flys mating. My wife and I almost walked out, but where does one go from here? this is a tiny town. There is no Rye Toast, only white, wheat, their own biscuit, or Texas Toast, which should be called Brick Toast for its thickness... LOL Other than that, the restaurant has some great mountain views. Pricing more than reasonable, a lot of tables. The food was fresh and good. Solid tasting juices, no lemonade. Only one co-ed bathroom with one bowl and a sink Clean. Now we have to figure out how to get back to Ft Garland to get to probably the best diner we've ever eaten in. The owner came over and explained EVERYTHING is made in house (except the chicken nuggets, and apparently several desserts). I ordered the most popular dish, chicken friend steak. He said it was tender enough to cut with a fork... correct! By far the best chicken fried steak I've ever had with hash browns that were potatoes that morning (owner, "we get 100 pounds of potatoes from down the street and nothing is ever frozen." Note: same statement for their beef, also purchased from a ranch near them, also never frozen). My wife got a omelet with turkey sausage, which had so many bite size pieces of sausage that it was closer to a sausage sandwich but using eggs instead of bread. Sausgae was deliciously spiced, not just salty. Pretty dang awesome! We had peach cobbler for dessert (not made in house, but very good). I could imagine if I lived closer I would be back to try everything... but if I come in every few months, I would have to go with that chicken friend steak again! read more

What a nice addition to Fort Garland. This diner has been open for a week now and is so welcome by the community. It's a cute spot right off the main drag. I've been in twice now over the weekend. First yesterday for a late dinner which was burgers and fries and this morning for coffee cinnamon roll and breakfast. The space is bright and clean and the staff is friendly and welcoming. They serve breakfast all day. I'm not sure about the hours, because posted hours outside the building differ from the website. I'm sure I will be eating here a lot. My only criticism is I could do without the religious music playing. Can't wait to get back and try the rest of the menu. read more
