I had a wonderful experience at Amali! We sat at the bar as our table was being prepared and had a cocktail from their unique drink menu carefully curated by their bartender. We were then brought to their upstairs dining area where we were serenaded with jazz music. The band was fantastic and created a great ambiance. We started with their burata and labneh which were so creamy. They even brought out their fresh made bread and garlic butter, DESLISH! For our entrees we got the branzino for two, potatoes, spinach, cauliflower, and wagyu. It was all divine and was more than enough for us! We took half of it home. The service was impeccable, they even scraped our table of crumbs between each course which I truly appreciate. We ended our meal with a complimentary grapefruit digestif. Selected Amali for our team dinner and it did not disappoint. Everything was fresh, amazing and delicious. Cocktails and wine were on point, service was friendly, excellent and very patient as it took us a while to figure out what to order. Amali was very accommodating for our medium sized group of 7. We enjoyed our table setup right in the middle of their back room which is glass roofed. Totally makes you feel as if you're sitting in a lovely quiet courtyard instead of in the middle of bustling midtown east. I would definitely return on my own for dinner with friends or family as everything was delicious! Starters - *Seared haloumi - nicely seared & the grilled pita went nicely *Salumi & cured meat: serrano ham, chicken liver pate & finocchiona (all very good) *Octopus a la plancha - nicely marinated and grilled, very good *Whole black seabass salt baked - awesome presentation, it was very moist and amazing Entrées - *Roasted chicken under a brick - read about this being really good here so we made sure at least one was ordered. I dined here for my birthday and I had an amazing time! I was able to make a reservation for a party of 9 and our table was ready and we were seated right away. I ordered a hibiscus drink that was really tasty. For dinner I ordered the scallops (which were really delicious and large) and my friends ordered the tagliatelle Bolognese (pasta was a little too al dente in one dish and cooked perfect for another) the spaghetti alla chittara delicious and flavorful for both guests) the frascatelli Noro (person who ordered didn't like it due to lack of bread crumbs on top and difference from pictures and taste) the crispy chicken (which was one of the best plates on the table- highly recommend and a really generous portion), roasted sunchokes (vegan friend approved) and the cavetelli which was also good. We also ordered a side of fingerling potatoes and roasted broccoli and both were star sides and I would recommend. The staff was very attentive and friendly and added to the overall experience. For desserts we got the chocolate cake (reminded me of a upscale cosmo brownie with a fruit sauce, not my favorite out of the options), the olive oil cake (delicious) and the strawberries and cream (favorite of all desserts due to flavor and texture -simple yet upscale). Everyone has their "remember where you were when..." moment and Amali will now forever be that to me, when I recall the moment my 17-year old son earned his foodie badge. I tried mightily to keep him away from the gateway drugs (fresh uni, pomegranate seeds, and anything local and organic) but the influence of Marin's farmer's markets, the ability to have Sol Food delivered directly to his high school, and his internship with a local winemaker proved to be tipping points. Then Amali went and pushed him over the edge and voila, a foodie was born. The expression I saw in my son's face at the end of our meal was both blissed-out and very alive. He was sated by the multitude of food presentations and flavors, charmed by the owner who stopped by our table and complimented our choice of Winter Squash with Brown Butter, Sheep's Milk Ricotta, and 25-year old Aged Balsamic Vinegar ($12), and enchanted by our waitress who returned to our table after we'd ordered the "Kataifi Cannoli" (with Sheep's Milk Ricotta, Honeycomb, and Fennel Pollen) to tell us quite honestly that we should really get the "Marcona Almond Cake" with Blood Orange and Anise Gelato ($9). Thankfully, that excellent waitress also offered a welcome suggestion on how best to enjoy the menu. A little of this, a little of that, select from the various categories, and share. Sharing is good. So we did just that and never even made our way to the "Meat & Fish" category. For starters we shared our choice of three wonderful Salumi ($12) from a list of seven: * Smoked Lonza with Hickory and Sea Salt * Bresaola with Red Wine and Black Pepper * Cold Smoked Pancetta with Juniper and Thyme From there, we segued to our choice of four Crostini, splitting a single large delicious one three ways: * Wilted Escarole Crostini with Garlic and Yukon Potatoes($9) From the starters we selected an Artichoke with Grana Padano and Mint ($12) and found it the only less than stellar sampling of the evening. We moved onto the "Vegetables" section of the menu, where that previously mentioned Winter Squash blew us away. The owner stopped by to tell us that some critic somewhere (Food & Wine?) loved that dish and honestly, we did too. I was half a step away from ordering up a second round. From the "Pasta" section we sampled Taccozette with Braised Lamb Shoulder Ragu, Chili Peppers, and Sheep's Milk Yogurt ($19) then moved onto that excellent Marcona Almond Cake. Naturally, we complemented all of this with an excellent red and finished with French Press Coffee ($14 for the table). The subtle restaurant interior was designed by the firm that did Louis Vuitton's flagship stores in Manhattan and Paris. All materials are re-purposed and made by local craftsmen. Every animal comes into the kitchen whole and all parts are used. Their mushroom appetizer with this middle eastern style pancake was delicious and definitely a must have in my opinion. Their clams seem to be a signature dish, and are delicious as well. The fingerling potatoes were crispy, flavorful and made for a great side dish if one is needed to share. The other 2 menu items we tried was the Burger and the Tomato Pasta, both of which were clearly made with fresh ingredients but lacked a little oomph to make it a stellar dish. I would've given this place a 4 star review BUT the salmon tartare was pretty disgusting... not being dramatic but the fish quality was not great. It must have been a frozen farm raised salmon as it had poor consistency AND very fishy. People can refrain from saying 'well it's fish so it should be fishy'. If you have been to good restaurants with good quality fish you know that your fish shouldn't smell or taste 'fishy' especially good quality salmon. I was extremely disappointed and frankly grossed out. Their menu boasts of sourcing from organic and local farms etc but I guess it makes sense why the salmon was bad because their fish wasn't on the menu as locally sourced. The good-- their cocktails were actually very yummy and nice presentation! Their sesame bread and whipped butter w olive oil they give for the table that's warm and seems to be fresh was super yummy is well! The waiter we had also was great/ service was fine. I got their pasta with lamb and I was also disappointed here as they really skimped on the lamb in my opinion. Their wine list has over 400 selections and has been called "daring" by The New York Times and "one of the best Mediterranean selections in Midtown" by New York Magazine, quoted from their website. Came here for a night out with four girlfriends (five of us total) and had a fantastic time. Ambiance: lovely table towards the back. Music (jazz) was loud enough to drown out other table chatter but soft enough not to be intrusive. Upscale crowd and classy vibe. Perfect for dates or colleagues or friends. Drinks: cocktails are lovely. Wine list is expansive with solid selections in all price points. Sommelier was helpful in confirming our selection was correct based on what we all wanted/liked. Food: excellent. We had the mezze platter and all four selections were great. Pasta was cooked perfectly and portions were appropriate. Chicken dish was tasty and hearty. Scallops were perfectly cooked (and I'm very particular about scallops). Service: waitstaff was perfect. Just the right amount of attention. No hovering, but always available if we needed something. Areas of improvement: No stars deducted because it's still COVID and staffing is tough. Timing: four of us received dinner before the fifth, only a few minutes but instigated the awkward "we'll wait!" "No, eat!" Back and forth. Luckily the delay was only a few minutes. Cocktails were similarly oddly paced but that's less of a big deal because the bar does what it can. We all received a gratis round of an aperitif which made up for it. Billing: as others mentioned, there is an 18% "admin fee" which I had to get up and confirm with staff was for tip (because we didn't want to short change them). This place is not expensive but pricey so I was surprised they'd add a mandatory tip- 20% is generally minimum so they may be short changing. Regardless, there is a tip line to add more but "admin fee" is confusing and should be changed to "gratuity" to make it clear. Additionally, we put in 5 cards (no separate checks, just split 5 ways) and yet only 4 were charged with no explanation. So it took us a minute to figure that out (why we were charged more than we were expecting) and then the friend whose card was in the folder but not charged had to venmo each of us individually. Again, not a big deal but something for the restaurant to be aware of as they train up new staff. Overall: would absolutely return and look forward to doing so. With a long list of cured meats, pastas, and wine from small businesses, Amali promises a meal that is high quality and easy on the conscience. The space is open and clean, although not very large. The corrugated metal walls and bare bulb lighting are juxtaposed with well finished wood tables and floors, which yields a space that feels a tad rustic yet industrial. The place feels intimate, but not crowded. I think they also have a private room in the back. The service is fantastic - prompt, cordial, happy to help, and aware. Al dente, flavorful, fresh - we both polished the plate. I also liked my panna cotta - rustic, creamy, not frivolous, but kinda homey. The kataifi was a really cool idea, well executed, and tasty with honeycomb. While the location is a bit odd (and why is it behind a zen wood wall?) the food is terrific and worth a try. Brief update: I've gone back for brunch a few times and the food continues to be spectacular. The service is also amazing. The octopus appetizer is easily one of my favorite dishes. They also seem to have switched their recipe for biscuits to a better one (and I liked the original). Only one bummer: apparently the rear section I sat in during my first couple visits is no longer open for brunch, only dinner. It's a shame because the lighting in that area is absolutely gorgeous. My entire experience here was disappointing.. My boyfriend took us here after our date for dinner. Aesthetic: This would be the only noteworthy thing. I liked the orange hues of the place. Service: From the moment we entered, we were told we could be seated as long as we were out of the restaurant in an hour and fifteen minutes. There were so many staff members in the restaurant but no one decided to come help us with the menu. Maybe because we were in our early twenties? Then, just as we were about to order, our waitress tells us that a different waiter will be helping us instead. Talk about unprofessional. Food: We were served a measly three small pieces of bread. First of all, there's two of us so what are we supposed to do in that situation with only three pieces? The pricing of the menu items was also very strange. The appetizers were all priced around $20 and the entrees were priced around $20-30. I ordered the spaghetti and my boyfriend ordered the pork. The portions were small almost pitiful and flavor was nothing special. I've had better similarly priced food with bigger portions. Went to Amali for lunch after learning that they are a slow cook, farm to table, local farmers restaurant. The place is very small with room for only about 50 customers. Yet is was very well decorated had great natural light and did not feel cramped at all. We ordered prosciutto de Parma and chorizo as an appetizer and chicken as the main course. I had told them that were gluten free so the adjusted everything and we had a great time. The food was fantastic. The taste were perfect. The chicken took 20 minutes to cook and came out tender and juicy. The service was fantastic as well. One of the things we hate is that as soon as it looks like anyone is done they are trying to take the plate away. Tonight I ordered the spice-grilled chicken and I think it was the absolute best chicken I've had in my life (and I eat it and cook it a lot!) The flavors were amazing, and it was perfectly cooked. I also enjoyed the gluten free appetizers - the olives and charcuterie were excellent, the fall squash hummus with the gluten free bread were super delish. I had a side of roasted broccoli which was crispy and flavorful. All the desserts were light, sweet, and beautiful, and we left feeling delighted. I chose Amali for Sunday brunch to accomodate a group of friends to celebrate my engagement. I'm really thrilled with my decision. They were very kind and easy to coordinate with on the phone leading up to the event, and went above and beyond to create a special experience for our group. We were greeted with celebratory, complimentary champagne upon our arrival which we really appreciated. The staff was extremely patient with us while we chatted amongst ourselves--at no point did we feel rushed to place our orders or order extra food. Soooo I went here after work around 6pm because I was craving Italian. I was greeted by Louis. At first he told me to come back in an hour. There were plenty of open tables. Then he said you are welcome to be seated now, but the area was on the lower patio in a puddle of dirty water from melting snow. I couldn't brace myself to eat in those conditions. So I declined. Luis then offered a table on the main patio. When seated, I immediately felt rushed. Even though I ordered a wine right away. Luis came over to my table at one point just to make sure that I ordered. I had. I ordered the bolognese, which was tasty, but a small portion for $27. After my meal I asked for a dessert menu. The waiter responded did I want a dessert to go? Never had a bad meal, highly recommend the Spicy Tirokafteri Dip or the Spanish Octopus. Both are crazy good and awesome options to share, especially the dip. For dinner, the Salt Baked Fish for 2 is a really tasty option for the fish lovers out there. Last 2 times have been a branzino/Black Sea bass, really flavorful and good portion size for two people. I am very torn with Amali, because on one hand, the food was great but on the other hand, I left feeling a bit cheated when it came to the actual bill. I organized a dinner at Amali as a business dinner for 8 people. We were only given an option of the tasting menu at $65/per person. I thought this was very economical (especially for NYC). With a budget of $125pp, I felt we would be well under in the total bill. Boy was I wrong! The tasting menu gave a choice of four appetizers and three entrees to be served for the table. At the time of ordering, or server kept asking us to change our selections. At the time I thought nothing of it. For example: we chose Fall Crostini as one of our appetizers. He informed us that it would be a dish that could not be easily shared. A little confused here - if we are paying a per person fee, why wouldn't the kitchen make enough crostini for each person? He suggested we order a Burrata di Campagna instead, which we agreed on. Instead of a salad, he suggested we order the Spanish Octopus, which he said was great! We also agreed. I should have been paying attention to the menu, but I was not, so perhaps it is my fault for not noticing that each dish he suggested had a surcharge of +$5pp. In addition, we ordered the Salt baked whole fish which had the $15pp and the Dayboat Scallops, that also had a surcharge. In combination with wines (the wine list is heavily sprinkled with Greek wines, which are not that great IMHO) and cheapest wine bottle being $60, sparkling water and some coffees we ended up spending $140per person before tax and tip. Our food portion of the bill ended up being $95pp after all the surcharges. Looking at the menu, 6 dishes have a surcharge. Why not make the menu more expensive and not charge this ridiculous surcharge to begin with? What upset me the most, however, was the amount of food served. There really was barely enough to go around for the 8 of us. For example, the fish came as just one fish to be shared between 8 adults (6 of them men). What if it was only 6 of us or 10 - would it still be the same one fish? For appetizers, there was only one plate of each to be shared. I think if you are paying a per person fee, there should be more than enough food to go around. In fact, looking at the regular menu, I could have ordered an appetizer, entree and dessert all to myself for that same price. I would like to end on a positive note - the food was delicious! Everything we ordered, especially the octopus was cooked to perfection. The fish baked in salt was brought out to the table to be presented. It was moist and perfect. I am torn weather I would recommend Amali. The food and ambiance was great, but I think the large party set up is a bit of a scam. read more

We came here for a private dining party on the 2nd floor of this restaurant. This place has amazing ambiance --very chic and upscale but warm and comfortable at the same time. It was cozy but felt spacious at the same. There is full sound wired system which is a big plus. The chefs were making appetizers in front of us. The hor dourves were fresh, delicate and delicious. The food was mostly farm to table and tasted quite healthy and hearty at the same time. The steak was cooked perfectly medium/rare. The bar was nearby and offered a nice array of wines and beer. I am in the hospitality industry, so I expected superior service after witnessing the behind the scenes of their sister restaurant, Calissa in Water Mill's close attention to detail, but Amali still exceeded our expectations. When my partner booked one of my favourite hotels near Central Park for our 11 year anniversary and left the restaurant reservation to me, I knew this was the one. Every staff member from the maître d' to our server, from the food runner to the bus person was knowledgeable yet humble, professional, but not pretentious and friendly without being intrusive. The Salmon tartar was bright and fresh, the Black Bass with tender with crispy skin and the loukoumades were fluffy and flavorful. Will be back read more

Amali is a pleasant dinner spot with a big space: seating outside, up front, and in the back. The food was all presented beautifully; my friend and I split the sunchoke appetizer (could have used less oil in my opinion), sautéed spinach and I had the lamb with with orzo in a tomato based sauce. I ordered the lamb medium rare which came out pretty good. My friend had a standard pasta dish I can't remember but he thought it was fine (he's also not a picky eater haha). I tried to see if I could get ANYTHING instead of the orzo but the waiter insisted that each dish was made the way that the chef thought it tasted best and no changes to dishes are ever made. Fortunately I don't have any serious sensitivities but I would have tried more if one or two slight changes could be made. Basically, I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone with any food sensitivities - let alone allergies. I'm from out of town and stumbled across Amali, my family and I decided to try it out since the vibe inside was very cozy and appealing. We love raw fish, so we decided to try the Hiromasa Crudo to start. The fish was so fresh and my whole family loved it. For the most part, we all ordered pasta and you could tell the ingredients/quality was top tier. On top of that, the server was extremely attentive and personable throughout. Came here for their NYE celebration. Very happy with food, very sad with party. So I reached a couple of minutes early and they seated me at the bar. i ordered their house ginger soda. Very yummy! Please do try it. We had signed up for their $99 pre fixe menu. They started us off with their focaccia. So flavorful and such spices. Also hot from the oven. Went beautifully with our red. For appetizers, we had a mix of duck arancini balls, scallops, dip with pita, and some caviar on a bread. I know I have butchered some of the names. Their breads are just marvelous. We probably had 3 diff. kinds that night. Not one disappointed. The duck arancini balls were perfectly fried- crispy on the outside and soft and yummy inside. The dip was creamy and had a hint of eggplant, and went perfectly with the pita. BTW I now can say this place serves one of the best pita. I also had the octopus salad (by their standards, this was the relatively less tasty thing I had that night). My friend had their sphagetti and that was a classic dish. WE both had the leg of lamb as our main. The lamb was cooked perfectly; it was tender and full of aromatic spices. It was on a bed of herbed rice with nuts and raisins. It had a hint of sweetness that complimented the dark meat pretty well. I will have to say their desserts aren't great! But everything else on the menu was superb. They promised a disco party but nothing really happened. We wore some party hats that's all. No complimentary champagne etc. The food is exceptional but might be steep for $99; then again it was NYE.l read more

I never write one star reviews for restaurants (it's a tough business) but my experience at Amali was unbelievable. The waitress dropped my credit card somewhere in the restaurant so when the bill folder came back the entire amount had been charged to my friend. Not a huge deal but when I informed them of this fact, it turned out that the hostess had found my card and after checking my name against the reservations (we did not have one), called the credit card company, who put a hold on the card and told her to chop it in half and throw it away, which she then proceeded to do!!! Now I have to get a new card and new number, which is a huge hassle as I am sure anyone who has had to do that knows, because all my subscriptions have to be updated, etc. Although the hostess seemed pretty chagrined, neither she nor the restaurant itself did anything to make things right -- like comp us at least part of the cost of our drinks. Ridiculous. PS the food and drinks were ok -- nothing to write home about. I'd give that part of the experience 3 stars. read more

Came here for restaurant week lunch on a Sunday with a friend. I got the hummus and she got the whipped feta to start. tbh it wasn't anything amazing. Solid 3/5. We both got the mussels with fries and that was ok as well. There was some sand in the mussels which was unpleasant. Fries got soggy after a few minutes in the broth. read more

Amali has a cute little façade on a quiet street located on E 60th street, not far from all the bougie shops. I was looking for something casual for brunch in which I could make reservations around the midtown/59th street area and luckily, there were plenty of reservations for Amali on OpenTable. I honestly wouldn't have known this place existed without the help of Yelp. We were one of very few tables there for brunch on Saturday at 12:30pm... I prefer atmospheres that are slightly more bustling, but I was happy that I didn't have to wait for brunch as is the case at a lot of the more popular brunch spots in NYC. Service was nice - our waiter was attentive and suggested several dishes for us to try. I ordered an iced coffee, which comes in a tiny highball glass and was some of the most watered down coffee I've ever had and didn't allow for refills. I'd suggest getting coffee somewhere else. As for the food, we ordered the mussels to start. This was a hefty portion of mussels, but then you find that the bottom of it is a giant chunk of bread. Regardless, the mussels were well cooked and the sauce was flavorful and was tasty when dipped with bread. Note that a lot of their menu items come with a poached egg. We also ordered the smoked trout salad which was a nice refreshing salad with a reasonable amount of smoked trout, topped with a poached egg. I liked the fresh lemony dressing, but it probably could have done without the soggy potato chips. The shakshuka had a bit of a kick to it and is perfect for tomato lovers - comes with pita for dipping. We also ordered the risotto, which surprisingly, was one of the highlights of the meal. It was a good consistency and had lots of flavor, especially with the meat in it. Amali is a good place for a quiet brunch without having to wait, but it is indeed a bit on the pricier side for what you get. The dishes were decent and there was not much to complain about, but the value here is a little less than what I would normally good for. Friendly service. read more

Dined here with friends recently and had an ok experience. The charcuterie was delicious, as was the wine and hummus with warm pita. The trouble started when the main dishes arrived. The roast chicken was woefully plain, as was the bolognese my friend ordered which had hardly any sauce on it and barely any meat to speak of. The filet that I had was good and flavorful, with a nice sear + rare interior but came only with a handful of large cut potatoes. The plate practically begged for a vegetable side dish.
