Seriously amazing food, wine, and ambiance. The pastas are amazing, as are the chicken and the duck. Definitely don't skimp on the starters - they are something to write home about. Only bummer was not having the surcharge explained. It was partially our fault - we split the bill with friends so didn't realize the surcharge was on there until after we left (and had tipped an additional 20%). We take the blame for doing that, but appreciate when waiters make it clear that gratuity is included when giving the bill. Overall a great experience though and we will be back. read more

This spot is a great place and wonderful outside dining! They have the best heaters!!! They also have probably the best service I've seen in a long time! If you are gluten free and vegan this is not the spot for you. Very hard to find choices. If your are like me and will occasionally eat fish when out and otherwise strictly gluten free then you can find some options. I had the fried cauliflower which was delicious! If you want pasta then I would say for sure try it out as my friends who had the pasta dishes loved it! Sadly there were no dessert options for me to try although the chef did try hard to make things gluten free and work around my allergies but it didn't work and I did really appreciate the effort. read more

Examine your check carefully! They tack on a service charge and keep the line blank for gratuities. I questioned a rep by email and this was their response: "Our service charge is a hospitality surcharge to ensure all employees are paid an above market, livable wage. This is similar to a European service model. This eliminates the vast pay imbalances between chef and server. " I have an idea: the owner pays everyone fair wages! Went to Amali on a Monday night to enjoy the jazz night! The vibes of the restaurant were super nice. They give free bread before - ours was sesame bread with whipped feta & butter which was delicious! We ordered the mezze platter and fingerling potatoes to share. The mezze platter ($54) was pretty good - my favorite was definitely the whipped feta and the others were decent. The fingerling potatoes were super yummy and had a good lemon-y flavor and were a good portion size ($14). Taking off a star because their website says they offer "silent" menu options to accommodate special diets, such as vegetarian. Half of our party was vegetarian, and we asked about the silent menu and they said what was on the actual menu was all the had. There aren't many options for vegetarians unless you get sides, so that was definitely a big let down. read more

Came here with my husband & mother in law during the soft reopening of indoor seating during the pandemic, but sat outside which is heated and lined with gorgeous pampas. Very cute outdoor seating. The food was delicious! It is a little pricey, but definitely worth it in my mind. Even my MIL, who orders bone marrow everywhere we go, said she would be back. And by "back" I mean she wanted to come back the following day. The cavatelli I ordered was cooked to perfection and delicious. Went here for an event, so I didn't have the typical experience. We were seated in a room in the back. Service was attentive. The food was significantly above average. We had a good sampling of the menu- Feta/butter/oil with bread, salumi, eggplant spread, pasta and chicken. They were all really good. I would come back to try the restaurant. Very strange pricing. Menu prices are for raw ingredients of each dish only. There is an extra 18% fee for the labour required to cook the food. There are also accusations that this type of fee is illegal. The law seems unclear but in my 10 years of living in NYC not one other restaurant has charged me any sort of add on fee. read more

This is a nice place I went to several months ago so I don't remember all details. The interior is quite nice and it fits in well in the local area. I'd also put Mediterranean down or Farm To Table if that was a category because this is definitely a place that is proud of the ingredients they get. There was a good mix of ages here from older folks to younger parents with kids by the time I left. The food was excellent though I found the prices are bit high. A lot of people were ordering pasta but they had started ordering after I arrived. I had the Under the Sun cocktail but I don't remember much outside of a bourbon flavor and perhaps some type of sour fruit. It was good and well prepared. They gave some focaccia with some good olive oil to begin with which was good. As the menu was expensive, I ordered only their special of the day which was lamb chops with with roasted wild mushrooms and some roasted vegetables (potato and broccoli perhaps.) The excellent server noted that they tend to cook their lamb on the rare side and as expected the lamb was quite rare. I found it to be quite good though one of the three chops was a tad chewy and had a bit too much fat on it. Outside of the three small chops, there was a piece more like a lamb loin or lamb bacon which was tender and quite good (a large piece of this would have sufficed instead.) I would have preferred more meat for the price or at least for all the pieces to be cooked evenly (especially for a dish in the upper 30's) but overall the lamb was fine. The rest of the dish was well made with a much wider variety of mushrooms (I only recognized maybe 2/3 of them out of the 5/6) then I generally see in a place such as this and the au jus was fine. For the price, I found it good but not great. I liked the meal but it's hard to justify with the prices that I would be back soon. I would love to give this place a 3.5 but I can't bump this place up to a 4. The cocktail was excellent as noted as well as the service though. 3.4 read more

Highly recommended. My friend came across this restaurant while hunting for a reservation around a specific time. Reviews online seemed good so we checked it out. It is now one of my favorite places to eat and i can't wait to go back. We essentially ordered most of the items on the menu and everything was cooked or prepared to perfection. Talk about a hidden gem. Not sure why I have not seen this restaurant on lists or in food blogs, but it damn sure should be. Chef Alex took great care of us and every single dish was amazing. The menu rotates and one of the new additions was a burrata dish with fresh green strawberries. The pop of freshness made the dish and it was great. We did sunchokes and the Spanish octopus as well and both were perfect and had amazing flavor. For our main course, we had their Frascatelli pasta made with uni and it was the perfect amount of uni flavor, not too strong and uni-forward, but also not to subtle that it got lost. We paired that with the sea scallops and a side of the cauliflower, both of which I'd recommend. Overall we had a great experience here and will be coming back for more. We're planning a private event here and Michael has been exceptional to work with and has been so accommodating. read more

I ate here over a week ago and I'm still thinking about how wonderful it was! Upon arriving I was pleasantly surprised by the chic decor and vibrant atmosphere. I was meeting 2 friends for dinner and the staff was quick to seat us and take our beverage order. They perfectly paired our wine with our dishes so we didn't have to think about it. Worst lunch experience I have ever had in NYC. We ordered take out. It was over an hour late. And it was the worst food we have ever had in this city. I'm attaching the $32 steak salad we received. An no, that was not half eaten. The picture was taken before we even tasted it. The steak was burnt and not edible. I had an unbelievable dinner and a pretty good brunch here so I guess ... four stars? This is why Yelp should just bite the bullet and offer a half-star option. That would make things much fairer. Amali falls in that category of really nice but also really expensive midtown east places that aren't a fast-casual chain or a cupcake bakery. For the dinner, I remember being blown away by well-executed takes like the roasted octopus and the eggplant with yogurt. You can probably find some of the dishes at other Greek/Mediterranean/Italian places in the city (for example, it seems to be a rule that you must have roasted carrots, broccoli or spinach under the sides as well as one or two dishes incorporating quinoa) but there were two appetizers that really stood out: (1) the mushroom and cheese crostini. It was too bad this came in a relatively small portion because I could have certainly hoovered a whole plate. (2) walnut carrot hummus. It tasted better than that description sounds. Can't remember the entrees but there was definitely a fish. And I think saganaki. I know those descriptions are super helpful. Came here a second time for brunch and ... I'm sorry but rarely does a place shine at this godforsaken invention. I'm a firm believer that we should just do away with brunch entirely. That day, I happened to be in the mood for eggs Benedict and yes, Amali's poached eggs were cooked perfectly. Thumbs up. And the breakfast sausage was actually a full-sized patty. My wife and I (2x women) had our wedding dinner in the Sopra room, Amali's event space upstairs this past August with 35x guests. Planning the event went seamless and we felt very taken care of by Michael Van Camp throughout the process. However, our experience greatly changed during / after the event. Michael was not in attendance that evening and the on staff event person Sebastian did not bother to introduce himself during the 4x hours we were there. We opted to do drinks upon consumption for our guests; upon entering we noticed multiple bottles of wine were open / being served which we did not request, so I had then made the server aware we just wanted cocktail menus out. Hours go by, we are all having a good time; it's our wedding day so both my wife and I were pretty oblivious to anything happening. We kept seeing Veuve being poured, even into glasses that weren't fully drank (and to my 15 year old niece), and honestly assumed this was a nice gesture they were offering as we did not approve the cost for everyone to consume bottles of the most expensive champagne. Later we had discovered that one of our guests had ordered some tequila shots. The server had asked one of our friends if this was okay, and our friend told them they needed to ask the brides for permission. We were never asked but multiple $50 Casa Azul shots were served (they did top shelf, even though their cocktails don't even include top shelf). I can continue on with other complaints (including staff walking in and out / serving drinks while we read our vows), but the majority of the issue stems from how the staff handled the beverages. My wife is sober and had requested a Coca-Cola 3x times, never received it, and yet we were charged for a handful. At the end of the event we received a bill for almost double what we had anticipated per head (~$13K). We confronted Sebastian with our concerns and were met with a un-pleasurable attitude immediately. He actually refused to give us his name for the longest time, apparently didn't have a business card and was unwilling to get us on the phone with the Manager. After pleading (including 5x of our friends / family), he finally called James Mallios. James was condescending and rude from the bat. We stood up for our selves that we did not give them permission to charge our card on file until we came to an agreement, to which they eventually agreed, apparently to shut us up, because as soon as we left our card was charged. Our wedding night was not ruined, but severely affected by the drama that took place. We tried discussing with Michael in the following days, to which we ended with no compromised solution after they only offered a very small discount. We decided to pursue disputing for a portion of the bill, of which we felt we were overcharged, approx. $4K. Michael's response was: "Our managing partner, James Mallios, is an attorney. In the event that you that you dispute your accurate bill, or post negative comments based on your unhappiness with it, please be aware that James aggressively protects the business's rights." - Then Jame's response was: "This would be exclusive of any damages for defamation if there is an online posting. It is in everyone's interest for this matter to not escalate and I would urge you to both: (1) reconsider Michael's offer (for which I would ask for a short release) and (2) not doubt my resolve in pursuing this matter." We won the dispute and got our money back! We would not recommend Amali, how they manage or handle events, and especially how they threaten lawsuits for freedom of speech. Our story is accurate and I have 35x guests to back it up and willing to share their experience. I look forward to Jame's hasty response I am sure we will get below. read more

I just left this place and I'm very disappointed.I was looking for a brunch restaurant on the upper east side on the Infatuation website, so I ended up there. Making a long story short is terrible! I didn't find many Mediterranean dishes on the menu and, unfortunately, I ordered a burger. The burger comes with an old brioche and a salty caramelized onion. My wife ordered a Spanish Tortilla and it was just okay. The hummus appetizer was a joke (look at the photos on Yelp and you be the judge). They automatically included 18% service on the check, which is totally fine with me, but I thought it was weird. I usually leave a 20% tip minimum or 25% if the service and food are impeccable. We were excited to celebrate a special Easter brunch here and were a small party of 4. But the waiter must have forgotten to put our order in and we waited for over 90 minutes for our food despite the waiter walking by us to the kitchen dozens of times. We finally asked about it and they rushed it out, with my son's burger not even completely done (the rest of us just ordered pancakes/crepes so simple). They never apologized, offered anything as a comp, or even seemed to notice anything was amiss. I had also inquired about the cost of individual mimosas/bellinis because the waiter informed me that their bottomless bubbles brunch was only available if all members of the party ordered it, and he said "I think like $12" but then they were $14. Overall there seemed to be zero care for service here and while I am usually a good tipper I felt scammed here by this policy. Bad business. We had the following: -STRACCIATELLA: Thomcord Grape, Walnuts, Rosemary: this was very good and I would recommend getting this. All of the flavors went so well together -SQUASH CAPONATA: Parmigiano Reggiano, Pine Nuts, Currants: this was good, but it was so oily. I don't think I would order this again. -TAGLIATELLE: Bolognese, Parmigiano Reggiano: this was very good, but the sauce wasn't traditional. It was a very light sauce which I liked but my husband prefers the more traditional bolognese sauce -AGNOLOTTI DEL PLIN: Koginut Squash, Black Truffle, Parmigiano Reggiano : this dish was very good and the sauce was amazing. I just wish the pasta was a little thinner. -we also got about 4 different cocktails, but they were all just ok. We were at theater which ended early and the theater recommended Amali as one of the neighborhood places that is most popular with their audiences. I really wanted an interesting, delicious meal....so many places have food that is just good but not memorable. Everything about Amali more than met my expectations. When we arrived, just 2 of us, we were given a spacious table although we did not have a reservation and this was our first time there. It felt almost immediately as if we had been frequent customers. The sense of being valued was palpable, the service has a warm solicitous feel. Amali has a very specific sort of menu with interesting and unusual dishes. After an excellent cocktail, we had a delicious, perfectly cooked cavatelli and a capelletti, and it was a very satisfying, filling meal. We would have had more but who could resist the chocolate mousse with sour cherry luxardo cream ? Well, certainly not us. It was absolutely delicious. The ambiance of this restaurant is very cute and Mediterranean! If you were just walking by, you'd definitely want to pop in. Unfortunately, the food and service were just ok, and the price feels inappropriate for what you're getting here. I went with a friend and we started with the labneh appetizer which was great but only came with two pitas, not a lot for two people. It took a really long time for our server to come and we also had several servers throughout the night that seemed confused. The entrees are not what you'd expect at somewhere that advertises Mediterranean. It's a lot of pasta and there are much better pasta places on the upper east side. I had the spiced chicken and it honestly tasted like it was just smothered in barbecue sauce. The meal was also almost $200 without alcohol which is pretty steep for what you're getting. None of the servers wear Masks and I wasn't even asked for my vaccination card. The table was not cleaned prior to me being seated. The oysters were the only highlight but how often can a restaurant get oysters wrong, lol. First time back here in a long while.  Delicious food and good cocktails, as expected. Surprised by how high the prices have gone -- $98 for bronzini for 2! Also surprised by how packed the restaurant was inside. We had the duck, half chicken, and squash hummus. All were outstanding, well portioned, and well composed plates.  I liked that bread and "butter" were brought to the table. The Grass Fed Beef with Arugula Salad with Shaved Pecorino is uncomplicated but supple, well-seasoned, slices of delicious grilled beef, balanced with the slightly bitter bites of Arugula. Nothing more is needed. The Roasted Salmon and charred Broccoli were also delectable, light and filling. The chunky mixed Tomato salad were hearty bites of piquant Greekness with bold nuggets of Feta throughout. The oven-baked Pita and fresh, thick hummus was creamy and pillowy but the hummus could use a pinch of salt. The wine selection was on point: a dry, light strawberry-plum flavored French Rose that was LIFE, a sweeter, yet dry Prosecco and a juicy Merlot, all had our tables buzzing with delight. Amali is more on the higher end side for me for lunch. The service is even a little stiff for my liking. The interior is chic and modern with a good amount of space between tables which I love. Too often in NYC you are on top of the table next to you. Not here. For lunch I had the Lamb burger. It popped out at me because of the description on the menu. The description unfortunately was better than the dish. It was very dry and had too much bread. A perfect burger has the right proportion of bread to meat. This one didnt. The lamb was also overcooked and pretty dry. The flavor wasnt terrible though. We also got a side of brussel sprouts which were very good. They were perfectly roasted and had both a softness and crispyness to them. Amali was cool but it is an expensive lunch. I think there are better lunch spots out there. I can't judge the dinner or drink menu so maybe give those a shot. read more

My first time here so Ill get to the point. The staff is very friendly - 5 stars. The ambiance is also 5 stars. The food however was a little too salty for my preference.... i couldn't finish it :(. Maybe i needed to order something else - I got a burger with fries. The fries were salty but what surprised me was that the burger was over salted as well.
