SO so good! GREAT sauces, great expressed flavors, beautiful, healthy and delicious food. The gluten free baked goods were great, not too sweet (as gluten free often is). It wasn't too crowded on a cloudy holiday weekend at 1:30, but steady. People working there were friendly and warm. We would definitely go back, in fact, 6 hours later I'm craving it! The "only" very slight disappointment was that we thought we saw pics of egg's Bennie, which we were craving, before we got there but we quickly pivoted and had lunch instead. Glad we did! read more

GOOD + Healthy and tasty - I love the purple eggs for breakfast and the quinoa bowl for lunch. + Cookies - Their signature cookie is GF, grain-free, and vegan. I am not any of these things, and I love their cookies. + Matcha Rose Palmer - Haven't found anywhere else that has this, and I love it. + Veggie AND meat eater friendly. A lot of their dishes are inherently veg/vegan but they do have bone broth and meat options. + One time I saw Carrie Brownstein here :o ! I know I was less than enthused by the clientele that was there for my last review but since then I've been coming back frequently before the shutdown. I have come here with my Gf friends, and my son who is allergic to so many things. Their menu continues to change and their prices don't seem as awful (or maybe I'm not as financially strapped?) and I appreciate the choices and how much superfood is infused in foods as compared to restaurants that serve just junk vegan food which seems rampant sometimes. I don't understand all the reviews praising the food here. It was very subpar. I ordered the green eggs and was very disappointed. The portion was pretty good, but thats only positive thing I have to say an about the food. Completely lacked flavor. It felt like they just tossed a bunch of things that looked pretty on a plate instead of really thinking about flavor pairing. Is salt a gluten? Must be, because it was missing. My boyfriend ordered the breakfast burrito and he said it was "fine." The chipotle sauce was good, but the burrito was uneven. One side was all egg, the other side just guacamole. The place is nice and clean. The staff were friendly and nice. I guess if you just want a nice place that serves pretty food for your IG feed, come here. Otherwise I'd skip. read more

I've been loyal customer for 4 years since we live so close. It seems lately, I just can't catch a break here. The service is soooo slow, employees just chat and take their sweet time which is sometimes fine, but it's also rude when people are visibly waiting. It took me a few encounters like this to finally make a comment. And I've had a few too many 15-20 min waits for a basic iced latte that were just astounding. One time they lost my ticket, another time it didn't print, another I could see my ticket being overlooked bc it was marked as to go order. Even though I ordered it there and was waiting with my child. I even once was the only person dining inside, off peak hours and told the girl to make it to go, bc I had my child, but told her we would start eating it here and I waited and waited and watched her. Then finally I went to look at to go rack and my order was the only one there, nobody around and she didn't even remember or think to bring it to me? Or like come check on us bc we waited so damn long for a pancake? It's just not worth the price increase for the disrespect I feel when eating and ordering here now. Wish we had another option within walking distance. I hope the staff gets a pep in their step and a few manners. Giving stars bc the food is still refreshing. read more

Pleasant surprise to find this nice little neighborhood cafe hidden . . . in the neighborhood. Popped in with seven people an hour before closing. We were concerned that we wouldn't be able to get our food within a reasonable amount of time but Amara pulled through. They got us all fed on time and they did it with a smile. I was very pleased with the service we received, especially since the place was packed and the staff was up against a time crunch. An outstanding item on the menu is the Spicy Chicken Bowl. I got it with a poached egg side and it blended very nicely with the quinoa. Also ordered in the group was the Amara Burrito, the Breakfast Sandwich, Rice & Veggie Bowl, and the Quinoa & Veggie Bowl. The Rose Palm Iced Tea is also very nice. Big flavors and nice sized servings here in this little Amara Kitchen. What a nice find. Definitely stop by when you are in the neighborhood. read more

Amara is lovely. I had been in years ago around when they first opened, and I'm happy to see this little cafe thriving and looking better than ever. I won't speak to the food because it's been so long since I've had it, but I had an amazing iced americano with their house made cashew milk today and could definitely go for another sometime soon. Unlike a lot of the trendy spots in HLP, this isn't right on Figueroa or York, but on one of the side avenues (and you might miss it if you're not looking for the cool paint job). Parking is easy and the neighborhood is charming. A few people have commented on the 10% gratuity thing that they put on all bills over $10. While I agree, it's kind of rare and your cashier should maybe let you know, I definitely did notice that they called it out on the menu. I also think that 10% is below the minimum of what you should be tipping anyway, so I have no idea who would need to make a big deal or ask for it to be removed. Just add that extra 5-10% and move on with your day. Not sure if there's wifi and there isn't a ton of seating, but this is a good spot to come with one other person for lunch or a snack or coffee. Sounds like they're great with dietary restrictions, so if you're sticking with any sort of specific diet (or just like bright, LA vibe food), Amara is worth a try! read more

This is a tough review to write because Amara is, hands down, my favorite cafe in Highland Park. The food is great, lots of vegan options, the staff is friendly and they even remembered my dog's name after only seeing him once which was pretty impressive. The issue, however, is with the forced gratuity that they low key add to every order, dine in or take out. You can only have it removed if you 1. Are aware of the charge and 2. ASK the cashier to remove it... like that isn't awkward. It's not the customer's duty to pad the wages of Amara's employees. The owners should pay their staff a fair wage from their own pocket, not ours. Also- there is also an additional option to add ANOTHER tip when you charge it to your card, while customers are unaware that 10% has already been added to your bill. I tipped almost every time I've gone in not knowing about the 10% that was already added. The whole thing comes off very deceitful. I'm honestly not even mad, I'm genuinely disappointed. read more

I had so much hope for this place, and I was so disappointed!! I checked on yelp and saw their pictures were really pretty and they had a lot of gluten-free options! So we decided to give it a try finally. We arrived on a Friday morning around 9am, there were not that many people, there was no line to order. We had a chai with homemade almond/cashew milk, a coffee, a vegan/gluten free muffin, a gluten free pancake, a purple egg bowl. So the gluten free muffin was very delicious, it was just about right sweet. Texture was similar to the regular one. We were excited. The chai was good too, not the powder sweet chai, so it was good. Then we waited and waited and waited. that's where things went wrong. We saw people were getting their dishes, but ours didn't come. 20 min in, still not coming. I thought maybe they just had one chef in the back. Until I saw the guy came behind us got his pancake, I could not be more patient. I had to sent bf to ask. There were 3 girls at the counter, only two machines to order, there was just 1 girl definitely didn't know what she should be doing. She was just standing behind another one watching her. So finally after 30min from we ordered, we finally received our dishes. And the dishes tasted really sub-par. I admit, if I am out of patience, then I would be extra critical about the taste. The food was not that hot! it wasn't like it came out of the kitchen and rushed to our table. It was like it sat there for a while. I checked my bowl, it was just an assembly of greens and some sweet potato and a poached egg. Like I said, it wasn't even that hot. Then my anger reached to the limit when I ran my folk into the poached egg! It was not poached! It was hard-boiled!!! There was no runny yolk, there was only that hard, sad, solid yolk. Plus, the 2 pieces of gluten free bread, which were as tiny as the palm of my palm, tasted like egg, not bread. The whole dish was worse than what I could do at home! At that point, I had no mood to finish the bowl, and I was beyond anger and disappointment. The girls behind the counter were very cold. She was not cheerful at all. She had no smile the whole time we were there. And they automatically charge you extra 8% for their employees? For what? Terrible experience. I would not come back again. And I would not recommend people to fall into the hype of 'gluten-free'. You can find things way better elsewhere. read more

Absolutely loved my experience here! I got the paleo pancakes and my boyfriend got the vegan breakfast sandwich :) The pancakes are super light and fluffy, and the maple syrup along with the berries balanced out the flavor of the pancakes nicely. Their sweet potatoes were super soft and had a lightly savory seasoning. As someone who is on the paleo diet, I'm very happy to have found a restaurant with some familiar paleo friendly dishes that taste just as amazing as if they were homemade. Been eating here for years and the quality has plummeted straight off a cliff in the last year. Their 'green eggs' dish is now a salad with undercooked, crunchy potatoes, raw shaved beets, and raw spinach which is unappetizingly coated in raw, runny egg yolk from a poorly poached egg. If you think eating a raw salad coated in runny egg yolk sounds good, by all means pay 15 dollars plus for this dish. I was so happy when I found Amara since being on a gluten free/Paleo diet feels very isolating when going to restaurants. My first time at Amara I felt liberated with the menu, as they have a very friendly allergy menu. I ended up ordering the Paleo Pancakes and the Avocado Toast! I really missed good pancakes when I went gluten free/paleo. These pancakes were soooo yummy, topped with fruit and a delicious spread. The avocado toast was very yummy as well. There is a normal bread option and a gluten free option. The gluten free bread they use is actually very good which is hard to find. My only disappointment is with their drinks. The prices are steep for something I didn't necessarily enjoy. However, I think it is cool they make their own 'Amara' milk! read more
