I had the quinoa bowl with spicy chicken. It was more filling than spicy, an amazing dish. Wife had the quesadilla, which was full of dark beans and heartier than any quesadilla was designed to be. The pastries are all gluten-free, and a nectarine muffin was too good to pass up. It wasn't too sweet, the highest quality to which a muffin can aspire. The tip is included in your final bill. You bus your own table and grab your own water. The menu is limited to breakfast and lunch, as are the hours, but it's all good. When we tell our out-of-town friends how easy it is to live in Los Angeles with dietary restrictions, this is the restaurant you take them to. read more

I'm not a huge brunch person only because American food can often be really too heavy or greasy, like a regular breakfast burrito with tons of bacon and cheese will make my tummy ache, but I love Amara for this reason. If you're more health-conscious or can't intake too much grease or salt for breakfast, I would recommend this place. This is such a cute brunch/lunch spot in highland park. There is both outdoor and indoor seating so it's pet friendly which is a plus! There are so many amazing food options from gluten free to dairy free to vegan they have options for every type of eating preference. Paleo Pancakes- this was only okay for me. The other dishes had bolder flavors. Avo Toast- we got it with two perfectly poached eggs and romesco! Who doesn't like avocados and eggs?! My friend ordered the Bison Ragu Bowl, while I opted for the simple Quinoa & Veggies Bowl. My friend enjoyed his bison ragu bowl, as well as an iced hibiscus tea. My bowl featured tri-colored quinoa, avocado, roasted squash, sea veggies & beets w/ pesto & greens, which when tossed well, was delicious with the roasted squash and pepitos providing some crunch. The avocado gave it the creaminess it needed since the main ingredient is quinoa (it prevented the dish from being too dry). Service here is wonderful. Unfortunately during hot days, the cafe gets a bit hot indoors as they do not have air conditioning. We ate at one of a handful of tables in their front so-called patio. I tried and loved the Bison Ragu which was Pasture-raised bison & house made marinara on tri-colored quinoa, topped with queso, quick- pickled red onion & mixed greens. If they have their chocolate chip cookie, this cookie is a must try. With the sweet and salty taste from the chocolate chips and the sprinkled salt on top, made a perfect combination for me. And it wasnt an ordinary chocolate chip cookie. It's made much more healthier and grain free, but the flavor of the cookie was surprisingly so good I ended up buying more to take home. I came in on a Friday during the lunch hour. Peak hours are definitely a thing here. Fortunately I placed my order moments before the crowd came in. Food was delicious! And although staff was courteous, they weren't very informative. When I asked for an auditory list of the drink menu, she only offered coffee. Y'all, let me tell you . . . I completed a road trip to LA from Ohio yesterday evening, CRUSHED some Panda Express and fell asleep faster than Kermit the Frog could say, "hello." This morning, I awoke naturally to the sound of my grumbling stomach. This meant either two things: one, last night's dinner was fighting me from the inside or, two, it was time for breakfast. I decided to retain my optimism and check Yelp! for some healthy food options. Little did I know that I'd find so much more than a place that offered TASTY, FRESH and AFFORDABLE food (not to mention, free street parking nearby). After my 3rd, 4th and 5th hour inside--and on the patio--of Amara Kitchen, I found myself throughly impressed by the entirety of the environment. I had the avocado toast with (two poached eggs on top) and two of their most popular pancakes. I'll spare you the juicy details. Just know that they didn't last long. 10/10. We rarely get to stop because they're often crowded. So much on the menu is gluten free, my thought was it's a great place to take my friend with Celiac to eat his birthday breakfast outside in the sunshine! He said his Amara burrito was excellent. I had the green eggs. I'd asked for no beet puree but guess they forgot to 86 it. Rather than have them remake it, luckily, the beets weren't so much of a puree than they were shredded removable bits. This made it better, too, because the eggs/ salad did not taste like dirt! Other than the beets close call, I liked my meal a lot, too. More disappointing than the beets, Yelp! needs to encourage owners to update their seating arrangements. We wanted to be outdoors apart from folks but had to sit on a bench next to the door. No surface area made it awkward eating eggs from a box. Images of tables and chairs outside still appear on Yelp!. Like everything else in LA, the food is pricey but I happily paid it. My wife and I have been to this place about 5 times. It's been bad 3 times and the other two have been so-so. We always hoped it would get better because we live so close to it. It's gotten worse. I'll give them some credit for having a cute spot, good coffee, good pancakes, and good pastries. Here's the bad: - They charge you 10% service charge on orders over $10. It shows as gratuity on your receipt. - They ask you for an additional tip when paying with a credit card - They tax the 10% tip. Businesses should NOT tax tips. - They use vinegar in their guacamole. -Their fermented cabbage is awful - They serve an awful aïoli with everything - Their hot sauce (made with aïoli) is awful - Their avocado toast is served on one giant piece of bread so they can save on avocado. - Their breakfast burrito taste like vinegar and is as orange as Donald Trumps face. It's an order at the counter, take a number kind of place, with plenty of square tables for customers and some outdoor seating to boot. It's a casual place, no need to dress up, just be ready for some yummy, healthy and tasty food. I made the mistake of picking a coffee substitute drink (aka decaffeinated coffee- I don't drink coffee) and the staff was nice enough to replace it for a Rose Palmer. In this day of gentrification, it's rare to find a hippie/alt/punk/progressive cafe or restaurant. There's Rosebud but Amara is gourmet. The food is great. Purple potatoes has multiple layers of flavor and is wholesome and delicious. Lots of gluten free and nut free options including gf nut free pancakes. No decaf but they have an alt called dandy which isn't bad. Love the atmosphere and vibe too. Not to be confused with Amara Chocolate which is also amazing and very different. read more
