The array of flavours here is really impressive. I didn't notice anything really crazy, but there are some less common flavours and every "standard" flavour of gelato and sorbetto you can think of. They don't do sampling so you will have to use your eyes and faith to choose. The prices are good: my single scoop on a cone was $5.5, tax included, and the scoops are pretty generous. I had the ginger gelato. I really liked the ginger flavour! The gelato was a little icy and unevenly frozen though. Based on my limited expertise in frozen desserts, I would guess that it was stored too cold - gelato should be creamy and velvety, and all of the gelatos in the display looked rigidly frozen like ice cream. This gelato wasn't bad by any stretch, but I did have higher expectations. I'd be open to going back if the opportunity arose, but I don't think I'd go out of my way for it again. read more

This place got yummy selections of gelato and sorbetto. We came on Saturday afternoon and there's no line up. We sampled a few of the gelato/sorbetto before we decided. I settled with mango sorbetto, which I thought was delicious. Mr.7 who loves sorbetto, had the raspberry sorbetto which equally delicious. Mr.10 had the strawberry vanilla gelato, and Mr.2 wanted strawberry gelato, but the server said that they don't have it (Later on I found that they do have strawberry gelato. Not sure whether she's new or she cannot remember that they do have strawberry gelato). I don't like the strawberry vanilla gelato as much as the sorbetto, it tastes artificially flavoured rather than using real fruits. The place also offered popsicles, pre-packed gelato/sorbetto, and also ice cream cakes. Nevertheless, it was a successful afternoon for us, dragging three boys longing for a yummy treat. read more

I would probably skip this gelato cafe. A couple of red flags. 1. They don't allow you to taste test any gelato. I've been to many gelato shops and they've always been ok with allowing customers to taste one or two flavours before committing to a flavour. Especially after I purchased a cup already (I've paid, so I'm not just trying to get free gelato). 2. The lemon gelato had a bitter after taste. This is a go to flavour and I've never had this issue before. Perhaps a taste test would've solved this. But I literally threw out half of my cup because it was not enjoyable. 3. Not sure if it was my mistake, but they literally force you to tip. There was no "no tip" option. I'm ok with tipping for sit down restaurants. But for you to scoop one scoop of mediocre gelato into the cup is not worth a tip. My recommendation would be to skip this place read more

Best. In. Canada. Need I say more?! When I raved to the servers at my favorite restaurant in Squamish about their incredible desserts and asked where they got their ice creams from, they told me it was all from Mario's Gelato! I quickly googled it to discover the shop selling Mario's to be called Amato Gelati in downtown Vancouver! On our way back from Whistler we had to stop in and get some road gelato so we made our way over and managed to find parking next to the construction zone. Someone had overpaid so we got free parking - whoo hoo! I took my time perusing all 50+ flavors and settled on cinnamon and hedgehog. I've had a lot of gelato in my time circling the sun, and this definitely ranks up at the top! It beats out the gelato I had in Firenze near the River Arno! I will definitely be back here again in the future! Service was good and there was plenty of seating in the place. I live close to this place now and don't know why I've only been back a few times ..I guess because there are so many icecream shops around here now. Sometimes, quantity has a quality of its own, and Amato really impressed me with the absolutely massive selection they have on offer. They had more flavours than I've seen just about anywhere else, and a lot of those were quite interesting and unique, along with common staples. I went for caramel lava cake and mint cookie, which were both pretty good, and I saw a lot more I wanted to try. Add to their sheer variety the fact that they also sell pints and boxes of frozen treats, including some cute animal-shaped ones, and this is definitely a frozen dessert shop that should be on your radar. With so many flavours, though, several of them were also very similar to one another in both theme and taste; and while I thought the gelato was very good, it wasn't knock-your-socks-off good. This place is nestled in a building that I feel has been there for a long time. On the outside of the building it says Mario's Gelato but the store is actually called Amato. I love it here! Their gelato is so delicious and smooth and they have 3 freezers of flavours to choose from! I keep walking back and forth because I can't decide. Early fall/autumn came, and it was only natural that this gelato store had barely any customer looking for cold desserts. No line-ups at all so the store looked spacious indoors. Very easy to find parking spot in front of the store, too (paybyphone street parking). I would highly recommend their soy-based Chocolate Tofulate. Holy. It was good (not very sweet or "heavy" for my taste). It wasn't too "creamy" compared to gelato at other stores. This gelateria has 3 display-freezers of gelato and sorbets. There were so many flavors to choose from, I didn't know where to start. The guy that was helping told me that I could sample some of the flavors before choosing, which is a typical thing I do at ice cream shops/gelaterias. I tried the golden custard, cinnamon bun with cheese cake, and olive oil. When asked what the flavors would presumably taste like, he didn't really know how to respond and whenever he does, he speaks in a monotonous voice. Didn't bother me much, but would have preferred a more enthusiastic helper. I wanted to order 3 scoops on a cone, but was told that I can't and can only get three in a cup. I really wanted a cone, so I ordered two-the golden custard and cinnamon bun with cheese cake (by the way, this was a facebook customer created flavor). I noticed a major difference at this place compared to bella is that you try your flavors first, then pay and they'll scoop. Which is the other way around at bella, you pay, try and scoop. I like the process at amato better because this way I can see which flavors I like most and decide whether I want a double scoop or a single. Whereas at Bella, if I paid for two, I'd have to choose two flavors regardless. Both flavors were awesome. Smooth and light, just like how gelato is suppose to be. What I love about their gelato is that it doesn't melt as fast as the ones from, for example, bella gelateria. I spent about.... 5 mins trying to take shots of my gelato and it wasn't even dripping. But other than that, I think this place would be my go-to in the future when I want to get a gelato-fix. read more

When I see a Gelato place, I think: Do they have Sorbeto as well? and they do. I tasted the Lavendar Earl Grey (!) and was impressed with the "bouquet" but it diminished right away and I was left with a shallow ice taste, so boo-hoo for me and my Dairy allergy. The big guy however, enjoyed very much his Acaiberry Gelato. Unfortunately, I found the staff to be very sour and underwelcoming. The good news is that there is a sign on the door: "Part time and full time Help wanted" SO, maybe there will be happier faces soon to serve. Mario's Gelati the guys that make the gelato that gets served at their Amato Gelato Cafe's is probably the most well known at this location with their giant sign. The parking is a bit of a pain, but on a hot summer night this place is always busy. Staff here all seem very happy to be working here and are always patient with dishing out samples when we're trying to decide on flavours. Prices are reasonable for the various scoops and the assortment of flavors is plentiful without being overwhelming. read more

Twice I found myself in this part of town looking for a non-existent office that I was supposed to pick up some papers from. The first time, I saw Mario's and dismissed it. The second time, annoyed at the futility of my office search, I went in to indulge in some comfort food. They have a pretty vast selection (not quite like Casa de Gelato)- but still give them credit for over 50 flavors!! They have the normal standbys, as well as some of the more daring flavors. I ended up with a white chocolate raspberry that was phenomenal. The staff was friendly and offered to give free tastes of as many flavors as I might want to try. I asked the employee which one was the most popular since there are wayyyy too many flavours. She suggested the expresso flake, which was pretty good. But the gem was the durian flavour. The durian flavour tastes so real. The unique aroma fills the palates on initial contact, then it melts into a creamy fruity taste. Definitely recommended if you pass by! As a disclaimer, I don't really have much of a sweet tooth, so it's pretty hard to wow me with sugar! My friend and I were biking back from Granville Island and decided to stop for ice cream. The line for Earnest was still spilling out of the door so we went for Gelato instead. I tried a few flavours, some of which were yummy, some I wasn't too impressed by. I went for the nocciola in the end (as I almost always do with gelato because it reminds me of being a kid). The scoop was huge, which was great, but it would have been nice to have the option of two flavours per scoop as I was a little tired of it by the end. The flavor selection is staggering, from old favorites like Mint chocolate chip to more interesting ones like Tomato Basil sorbetto, you'll definitely find something you'll like. The price is on par with others around town: $4 for single scoop, extra if you want a waffle cone. Pro-tip: check out the cooler on the far right. We scored mint chocolate ice cream sandwiches for only $2.50 and mini gelato cups for $2! read more

Amato is definitely some great Gelato but the lines coupled with inefficiency at the till and prices are enough to keep me away. We've stopped in a couple of times for a treat but each time I do I'm forced to wait in such a huge line by the time I actually reach the till, I'm rushed through without having a chance to do the sampling that I generally relish while selecting my Gelato. We all know peak times in the city and with the weather being the way it is, if they could figure out their line situation or staff more efficiently I'd be much more likely to come back. read more

Amazing gelato and service ! The girls tonight were so patient and accommodating with our group of 10. They let everyone try however many flavors their heart desires until they found the one they loved which I find awesome! It's very important for me to be able to try flavors at a ice cream shop and a lot of places normally aren't so nice about it but this stop and the two employees working were so patient and awesome! On a hot night, with our transit plans dashed by crappy aqua bus hours, the only option left was to cool off with some gelato and grab a cab. Despite what looked like an insane number of people trying to get their gelato fix, we got helped pretty quickly and were in and out within 5 minutes, gelato in hand, and mouth! The prices are a little steep for the size, but this is gelato, which tends too be expensive, anyhow. I had my usual pistachio, which was enjoyable, and the mojito sorbetto (yeah, I got two scoops) which was refreshingly yummy. I was impressed that they had plenty of staff on for a hot Saturday night, so that was a bonus. And the staff were actually pretty nice, though I was a quick serve, as I knew what I wanted. Those of you who remember Willy Wonka landing in the chocolate factory could probably see yourselves landing in Mario's and landing in the gelato, sorbettos, frozen yogurt factory. I thought I died. To me, this was just another gelato place. However, further research shows that Mario's has grown throughout the years expanding its line of products to include over 500 items--shipping to all sorts of restaurants and stores. Go figure. My childhood place to eat delicious sorbet and getting my sugar fix, is a corporation. It doesn't matter. Their special ties of gelato (Italian ice creams), sorbettos (sorbet), frozen yogurt range from sweet, to tart, to creamy, to fruity. I remember grabbing a pint each of red-bean and some chocolate concoction after woofing down several small samples of what ever was behind the counter. Well, I was craving gelato --and when a craving hits, it's important to indulge. I did have to fight for my right to lick here (there's a lot of construction going out front right now) but I suppose I was expecting there to be a little more excitement happening on a sunny afternoon in Vancouver. Marios is a nice pit stop on a sunny day if you decide to head around the sea wall! Just make a slight detour at science world and you will find yourself caught spending a good amount of time trying to decide on the flavour you are craving. The construction is easing off, so don't let this discourage you. The only discouragement I would probably say is the price. A double scoop waffle cone is just over $6 and a 500ml tub of gelato is worth $6.50. It definitely makes me think twice. I personally always fall for the coconut but there are way more yummy flavours to try! read more

They are sitting rubbing their little hands together waiting for the O Village or as City Hall calls it the "The Big Sink" to be populated, the neighbourhood is changing but as I understand they own the building so they're not going anywhere. Finally, a beautiful sunny spring day in Vancouver. Even though it was a brisk 49 degrees Fahrenheit, I felt like celebrating with gelato and a walk along the waterfront. Luckily for me, Mario's Gelati completely fit the bill. Mario's is situated just two short blocks from amazing views of the water, cityscape, and mountains.There's an enormous range of flavors that you can sample from before deciding on what you want. I went with "Coconut Surprise" which was super yummy coconut laced with mango. I highly recommend getting a cone to go and exploring the surrounding neighborhood. This highly contentious plot of land was built up to house athletes during the Winter Olympics and now is in weird limbo land of receivership. Like me, you can enjoy your creamy gelato while pondering politics, city planning, urban development, and all of life's mysteries. read more

After eating like an Ethiopian (literally) at Harambe, we were craving frozen Italian sweetness. We were going to go to La Casa Gelato, but had to pick up someone downtown so we ended up at Mario's joint. Still bombarded with Olympic fences, we parked at Burger King. Staff were slow at acknowledging we were not ghosts despite not being busy. For $3.50 you get a comparatively small single scoop in a cup or cheap, plain non-waffle cone. I had coconut, which was ok, but just didn't can't measure up to the La Casa experience. It's like eating gelato in a fridge vs. a buzzing town square. Get a pint to go! While sometimes I enjoy variety (buffets, woot woot), I think my logic takes over and tells me to get more of one thing for the same price as less of a couple. Case in point, ice cream... oh wait, my bad... Gelato. For the same price as a double scoop, you can get a whole pint. As long as you and your crew (or just me and hubby in my case) agree on a flavor and don't mind sharing out the tub, then the best value by far is the pint from the freezers. Tiramisu people, tiramisu. Otherwise, when the variety bug bites you, they do have a lot of delicious flavours. I normally try to get fruit ones (I am trying to be healthy... no, not really), but the creaminess works with other things like sour cream or something chocolate-y. I would really like a whole scoop of just the marscapone gelato that's in the pint of Tiramisu, but I didn't see it when I went. I've had black sesame, but it wasn't my fave there... it's never as black and rich as the Japanese place on Main. There's places to sit or just walk back to the seawall and taunt people as they exercise. read more

This entire place confuses me. 1. You pay for your scoop and cone ahead of time, before picking out your flavors. Says what? No, I wanna choose a cup or a cone and have the attendant follow me around and pick up 4 different scoops of random flavors as I swoon with the thoughts of wonderful flavors in my mouth. Instead, I go to the counter, pay for a single cup and a single scoop and get angry with myself for not getting more scoops. Or, you take a walk through the place, pick out what you want but can't buy it, go pay at the counter, then come back and repick what you want only to forget what they heck you chose in the first place. 2. This place doesn't take credit cards and paying by debit costs an extra service charge. Why? This is a giant chain of Gelato stores! Not taking credit card and having your customer decide on only one scoop ahead of time only eliminates the impulse buy. 3. (This is going to be a useless complaint for most people) Everything is SO sweet. I'd love to have a half sweet or non-sweetened option. I know I know, it's gelato, it's junk food, it's supposed to be sweet. I don't know.. it's just a personal preference thing. 4. Not enough seating. Again, this might not be a big deal for most as you just take your cone and go.
