I rarely give out a 5 but 3/3 dishes made me wonder "why have I need eaten more Burmese food?" The tea leaf salad was the star,.. cheap, filling, great. Biryani with cinnamon and the Burmese pork sausage noodles... all amazing flavours, yet not overly spicy at all. The clincher was the prices. My wife and I think we could have done fine with the salad ($10) and a single noodle or rice dish ($15 each). This place is top of my "return" list. read more

I'd been wanting to try Burmese food for a while and I finally had the chance to do so at Amay's House! We had to wait a little since it was a small establishment (around maybe 5ish tables?). I really enjoyed how we got some kind of complementary red warm tea with our meal since I was quite cold that day. We tried the tea leaf salad, the Mohinga and a lamb curry (it was a good amount of food and reasonably priced between $12-$18 per plate). The tea leaf salad was definitely the most unique as it had the bitter leaves. I had never tasted anything like it so I'd recommend trying this though it is quite particular and a bit fermented. The curry tasted pretty standard to other curries but I really enjoyed the Mohinga noodle soup which reminded me of a gentler laksa. Definitely would recommend if you want to try smth new! read more

Great little hole in the wall eatery serving Burmese (and adjacent) foods. I had the Tea Salad, which was unique, refreshing and delicious. Note that it should be eaten right away, as even just after only 20 minutes of sitting, the "magic" had largely left the salad... I also had the Shan Noodles - it was tasty. A touch sweet, a tiny bit of background heat (I would have liked more), along with notes of funky brine from the pickled vegetables and beans. Not piping hot, but more a warm-ish dish. Unfortunately I had already mixed it up before I remembered to take a photo! It comes with a very light broth, which I am not sure the point of... maybe if it was a spicy dish, I could understand it. My dining companions shared the pad thai and the marinated chicken with coconut rice. As suspected, the pad thai was not a star, at least for me - it is quite sweet and made with ketchup instead of tamarind. If you like that style, then yes, it was well made. The marinated chicken with coconut rice - well, tbh the little side cabbage salad (very fresh & zingy with chilis) and the coconut rice (wow) were astonishingly delicious. The marinade for the chicken was tasty, but I was underwhelmed with the actual chicken, but then I'm not a fan of long braised poultry, so if you are, I'm sure you will enjoy it. The service was very friendly. The place is tiny, and when I showed up at 11:30 on a Sunday, it was empty, and by noon, almost all the tables were full. Lots of families seem to go there. Nothing better than a tea leaf salad, chock full of many different textures and flavours. Yum! Prata with potato curry is good but I like mine smashed for the texture. Chicken noodles with crispy noodles was soul warming. Burmese food is not easy to find, this spot had some tasty items. Service was terrific by a woman from Burma with a wonderful smile. She kept checking in and gave us recommendations for next visit. The place is tiny with only 5 or six tables. Cozy! I will return for sure. PS must try the house made hot sauce! read more

Unique and hard to describe. Simply delicious. If you dare, absolutely try one of the curry sauce dishes. I had the Button Mushroom curry and was very impressed. The Nasi Goreng was a big hit at our table and everyone equally gave a thumbs down to the Mohinga. It's a fish/noodle soup that, in our case, had mostly noodles, almost no bits of fish and a weak broth. I felt bad for Meida and ate the lions share of her soup and she had my mushrooms. Our server was overly friendly, bless her heart and the diner, while small, I found to be intimate and relaxing. Do to the greedy asinine behavior of our glorious financial institutions, we avoid plastic and pay with cash most of the time. I'm thinking this is a cash only restaurant. I'm seeing all these other rave reviews about this place and don't like being the black sheep in the herd but if I'm being honest, we really didn't have such a great experience here and based on what we ate tonight, I really can't understand how this place has gotten so many high ratings. Maybe they were having an "off" day? We ordered the following: Pickled Mango Salad Roti Prata Stir Fry Vermicelli Noodle Beef Lemon Grass Curry Shrimp Fried Rice Veggie Curry To be fair, we have not dined in a lot of Burmese restaurants. My husband's family is Malaysian though, and a lot of the dishes on the menu were dishes that you would find on the menu of a Malaysian restaurant. Burma is in pretty much the same part of the world as Malaysia so it stands to reason that there might be some overlapping menu items. Beef Rendang was on the menu. We didn't order that, but it was on the menu and that is a very typically Malaysian dish. Roti, which we did order is also another item you would very likely see on the menu of a Malaysian restaurant. The pickled Mango salad was interesting. I'd never had a mango salad like this before. Mango is usually a sort of yellow/ orange colour. I really couldn't figure out which part of the salad was mango since none of the salad had any of the usual colours that we're accustomed to seeing on a mango. No basis of comparison for this one since I have not had pickled mango salad anywhere else. It was interesting is all I can say. Roti Prata was pretty good in terms of texture. I didn't try the Stir Fry Vermicelli noodle since I don't eat meat, but I heard it wasn't bad...that there was some "wok hei" flavor in it. Everything else we ordered was either "meh" or a huge disappointment. I'd say the Veggie Curry was the saddest dish of all. It was very much lacking in flavor and didn't seem at all like a curry dish. It was a bowl of vegetables sitting in liquid that looked more like soup broth than curry. This place has been on my list for a really long time so I was very excited to finally check it out and it certainly lived up to my expectation! Amay's House is a Burmese restaurant with a small space. I went there on a Saturday afternoon for lunch, it was pretty empty so this is my new fav spot for last minute lunch plans. It raining outside so we decided to get some soups! For appies we tried their Prata with chicken curry, the prata was SOO good! Flaky but soft and it soaked the curry flavours so well. We ended up ordered an extra prata. The chicken curry 5/5 Both our main dishes were 5/5! We tried their coconut milk noodle soup and their laksa with chicken and shrimp. Apparently Laksa is one of their spicier dishes but I did not find it that spicy, the spice level was perfect! The chicken was cooked to perfection. We got it with their mixed noodles which was lovely and added a good texture. Their coconut milk noodle soup was thick and creamy! The chicken was very well marinated and the egg was cooked so well. Best part about this place, it is so affordable for their portion sizes! $14 for the coconut milk noodle soup and it was so much that I had it over two meals!! I thought they permanently closed, but it looks like they relocated to Kingsway & Joyce. It's a hole in the wall and we were served by the owner's daughter who was very sweet and friendly. Mohinga (fish noodle soup): the last time I had this dish was when I was in Myanmar and this tasted just as good. It was a big bowl and the broth was thick and flavourful with a bit of crunch. Lamb curry with rice: I liked the spices and flavour of the curry but the portion was a bit small and hubby was still hungry. Golden puffs: only $6, we really enjoyed this dessert. My friend recommended me this restaurant, my gosh Amay House did NOT disappoint. Solo'ed in and was lucky to grabbed a table right away. I know I will be returning soon, as it's been a long time I've had such yummy fresh, seasoned south East Asian food that isn't too greasy. Tea leaf salad was so delightful, the crunchy fried lentils? was so wonderful with the tea leaf and chopped tomatoes and salad. It's been awhile since we've ate at Amay's House. No idea how they came back from the dead. They're next door to Pho Tan. Been for a couple of Friday dinners. No wait, friendly service and tea carafe refilled. Prices are reasonable. - Myanmar tea leaf salad (#8) ($10.00) - flavours weren't as bright as before. - Roti prata ($4.00) - side order doesn't come with sauce. Roti was light and crispy. - Burmese garlic pork noodles (#14) ($15.00) - pork balls were bouncy, pork intestine tasty. Vermicelli with the tamarind sauce was excellent. - Laksa (#22) ($16.00) - opted for the mixed noodles. Broth was okay but lacked complexity. - Marinated chicken with coconut rice (#24) ($16.00) - chicken leg was tender, coconut rice was meh. Upgrade to the biriyani dish (#31). - Coconut milk noodle soup (#20) ($14.00) - bland, not much substance to the bowl. Appetizers have appetizer portions and appetizer prices, but noodle mains had generous portions for price, which is not that easy to find nowadays. Great value! Burmese Style Samosas ($10 - samosas stuffed with diced potatoes, onions, traditional spices) -Inside it looks like curried potatoes but the flavour is quite weak, though the subtle red onion does make itself known. -The description doesn't say it's curried potato so they can't be faulted for not having a strong curry flavour. -Not spicy at all (despite the 1-chili warning on the menu) even if you slather on the sauce. Prata served with Curry Chicken ($14 for two pieces) -You may know this as roti prata or roti canai. -Despite being basically an oily dough, I found the product served to the table a bit too oily. -Also a bit over done, with too much charring leading to too much flaking. -Despite the barely passable prata, the chicken curry at least did not disappoint. Coconut Milk Noodle Soup ($14 - egg noodle, coconut milk, chicken curry, onions, deep fried noodle crisp, one hard boiled egg) -Though tasty enough, this sounded more interesting than it turned out to be. -Basically a chicken curry with breast meat strips, and a lot of coconut milk. -A few strips of deep fried noodle for fun but it's not a big part of the dish. read more

My Nani (maternal grandmother) was Burmese, so I grew up eating a few staple dishes like Khaosey, Mohinga, and Leh Thoke. Finding Amay's House in Vancouver was incredibly exciting for me since it's so rare to find this cuisine in a commercial setting. I was craving Mohinga and Tea Leaf salad so much after my friend introduced me to Burmese food in California. When they finally re-opened after the relocation, I rushed there to try because I think this is one of the only Burmese restaurant in Vancouver. And WOW! Amay's House exceeded my expectations and I was happy that they didn't skimp on the spices. The Mohinga was sooo flavorful and thick and hearty with a little bit of crunch. The tea leaf salad also packed a lot of flavors and textures with the very distinct tea taste from the leaves and perfect combination of flavors from the other components. The chicken biryani was also really flavorful but it was my least favorite because I love the other two so much. This was my boyfriend's first time having burmese food and he loved them as well. The place is small, however it feels weirdly homey to me. Just writing this has me drooling so I can't wait to be back. read more

New location and I believe even better food than before. I took my foodie group here tonight. We had tea leaf salad, ginger salad, mango salad, Mohingar, paratha and chicken curry and the Shan style noodles. Everyone enjoyed everything and most of the table had never had Burmese food before. I have been fortunate enough to have travelled to Myanmar and can tell you this is authentic and the pricing is really good! For 5 of us to share it was $18 per person tax and tip included which is very reasonable. If you haven't had Burmese food before you should go! read more
