Came with slabs of chicken (a little tough), some prawns, & the usual fixings you'd expect in a bowl of laksa. Not entirely authentic tasting (compared to laksa in Singapore), but it still tasted decently good. Pad Thai was flavourful but a little on the wet side. We got take out from spot and it was my daughter's favorite meal and she wistfully said I wish we lived here so I could have this regularly. We ordered Laksa, Hainan chicken, papaya salad, roti kanai, nasi goreng--all were great to eat but the papaya salad was a little too heavy on fish sauce for me. My favorites were definitely the chicken and rice (wish we had gotten two!), Laksa, and nasi goreng. We really enjoy the laksa here. It is flavourful and really hit the spot. I recently decided to try this Burmese fish broth vermicelli soup called Mohinga. OMG! It was so good. The layer of flavours in the soup was so satisfying. It is not spicy on its own but dry chili flakes was served on a side dish so it is entirely up to you to use it or not. Our very first time trying this cuisine. We drove past it last trip and insisted we'd try it if we ever made it back. We're back. This time we're here with a French couple and a couple from PEI. No experts to consult and the staff here are not quite cutting it. The place is very much Thai but different. We did a community spread with Mango Salad Nasi Goreng fried rice Drunken Beef Rice Chicken Mee Goreng Beef Rendang & Butter Chicken You better like things hot and spicy or tell them to calm it down or you'll never make it through a meal here. Came here since we are both craving laksa, it looks like a diner with all the decorations and booths but it's serving authentic laksa and other dishes. I got one with less spice and rice noodle, it's very delicious, full of flavors. I enjoyed the chicken so much, I think they marinade it beforehand which gives it elevated flavors. Tried the mohingar, roti canai ($14 for 2) and skewers. The skewers were good (almost $4 each) which is rather expensive. Overall it was ok. The roti was fluffy but very small, the skewers were marinated nicely and was tender but the Mohingar was a let down. Although flavoursome it lacked protein (only 1 hard boiled egg). There's fish in it but fried and cooked to smithereens in the broth to a consistency of a smoothie. I had asked for additional meat on the side and the waitress said it's not recommended as it's a fish broth. It's a very small restaurant with even smaller booths. This is maybe the 4th or 5th time I've been here! I think their laksa is the best I've had in recent years in the city. The broth is tasty, spicy (but not too much), and has a good curry flavour. I opted for the mixed noodles (egg and vermicelli) and I liked the texture blending. I especially liked the tofu puffs soaking in the broth, and the large shrimps! A perfect dish for me, for this wintery season. Service is very quick and attentive! We have gotten take out from here twice and love this place! We have ordered the papaya salad (fantastic), satay skewers (great), veggie spring rolls (amazing!!), butter chicken (sooo good!), mee goreng (loved it!). So far we have not ordered a dish we have not liked! I love how unique the menu is and fusion it is ~ they really have all of my favorite asian dishes but with a spin on it. We have seen the owner as she is always super friendly, helpful, and clearly has a lot of pride in the great establishment. My first time having laksa and it was yummy. The parking is a bit tricky, as you need to park on the streets somewhere nearby. The inside of the restaurant somewhat resembles a diner. We ordered the laksa. We had the choice of vermicelli noodles, egg noodles, or mixed noodles. I've tried both noodles before and prefer egg noodles because they went well with the savory and creamy soup. The laksa contained chicken, shrimp, fish balls, tofu, and a hard boil egg. I can't handle spicy so we ordered it mild, but it still came with a kick. I also got lime/lemon on the side to squeeze into my soup. I will definitely be back when I'm craving laksa. read more

Service is non intrusive but you tend to have to ask or flag down someone if you need anything. Not the type of place where they come fill your water glass or ask how your meal is. Authentic Malaysian food! I tried the Laksa and it was great and it comes with lots of ingredients! The beef Rendang was great too with very tender meat and flavorful sauce. The roti canai was also delicious and I believe they are made fresh and not like some places that serve frozen one. Time to come back after some 12(!) years. Totally forgot about this place. Parking is available on the side streets, as well as on Hastings in the evening. Place looks basically unchanged from my last visit. Wow. Looks like the owners haven't changed either. They are Burmese/Myanma. Mohingar (Myanma fish soup) - nice and thick. Reminds me of the satay stuff. Served with a rather interesting deep fried bean(?) pancake/fritter on top, and a sliced boiled egg. Also comes with a slice of lime, and some seriously spicy chili flakes (powder?). Dip the fritter and eat it quickly before it gets soggy. Pretty tasty I must say. I also had the seafood laksa. Once again, hit the spot. There is a choice between white (vermicelli) noodles and yellow (egg) noodles. One can also do half half. Great flavour. Decent toppings. I liked it though, something unexpected. Their laksa is good, BIG portion, a little spicy. Burmese food is new to me, I never heard of lahpet thoke and my friend got it so I tried a little. Located in deep East Van, this retro looking diner is actually the location of a cash (and debit?) only Malaysian restaurant you should definitely visit. If my Malaysian mom were alive, I know she'd enjoy this place and it would remind her of home. We simply love their Laksa (I mean this place is called Laksa King for a reason), with your choice of rice noodles or yellow egg noodles or both! Egg, curry broth, shrimp, jalapeño. Soooo good and warms you up. The roti is more dense than if you were to get it in Malaysia or Singapore, but still hits the spot. The chicken satay - big juicy pieces - which isn't a bad thing! In Malaysia I always found the skewers to be quite thin, flavourful and cheap. I guess for the satay skewers, since it's more pricey, they make bigger skewers. Doesn't taste quite the same but still good. I mean who doesn't love a peanut sauce? Mohingar - a fish based soup. Not to be confused with "Laksa" found in Penang that is actually fish HEAD soup, in a thick delicious broth. I actually haven't had more than a sip of Mohingar though I love fish head Laksa. We ordered their most popular dishes - laksa, roti and lamb curry. Roti was hot and flaky - very addicting. Laksa broth had rich flavor but not overwhelmingly sweet like some places. They didn't skimp on ingredients. Soup could be hotter. Lamb curry was very savory and the meat was lean - which may also be the downside because the meat wasn't very tender. CASH (and debit?) ONLY! After a long day of spending our time outdoors, my boyfriend and I wanted to grab some takeout dinner but didn't know where. I saw this restaurant on Yelp, and it was near the place we were staying, so we decided to check it out! It's located across of the Hastings North Temporary Commmunity Garden and in between Everight Computer and Sunrise Village Dental Centre on E Hastings Street. Apple maps took us to the back of the building structure which confused us as there was no entry from that way. There's only street parking around the area on the smaller streets and across the street at night. The inside of the restaurant looked like an American drive-inn diner with the booths, retro lights, and the vintage pictures. Very interesting for a southeastern cuisine restaurant! My boyfriend and I ordered takeout of the Laksa (obv) with mixed noodles (vermicelli and egg noodles) and the Drunken Beef. The laksa was delicious! Really flavorful broth with a ton of noodles and proteins (shrimp, fish ball, chicken, and fried tofu). I'm used to a creamier laksa which I feel was kind of lacking in this dish. Regardless, the bowl of noodles was delicious! The broth definitely had a spicy kick to it as my mouth slowly felt firey as I continued to eat it. YUM! The egg noodles threw me off a bit because it was really thick compared to the thin version I was used to. Nothing bad tho! The drunken beef was also really good! It was soaked in a lot of sauce but wasn't overwhelmingly salty at all. Tons of flavor where the beef melted in my mouth and the rice balanced it out. It's not as spicy as the laksa but once my boyfriend ate the pepper on accident, it got super spicy on top of the laksa LOL. Found this restaurant on a whim and definitely loved it! It's been too long since I've had a good bowl of laksa so we decided to check out Laksa King. They do a mix of Malaysian, Thai and Burmese dishes. It's located a few doors down from Vietnamese Tea House. The inside is decorated like a diner but don't let that deter you. Service is friendly, waters were refilled multiple times and the food came out quickly. The menu is a small two pager; appetizer, salad, rice, noodle/noodle soup and desserts. Interestingly, they have several Burmese dishes on the menu. Trip #1 We dropped in on a Sunday (around noon). - Lahpet thoke (#9) ($10.50) - haven't seen too many places in town that make this dish other than Amay's House. - Laksa (#27) ($13.50) - broth lacked depth and complexity. - Sunday special - kyee o (#37) ($13.50) - excellent. Broth was balanced, homey and flavourful. Good mix of meats and vegetables. - Fujian noodles (#34) ($13.50) - flavours won't blow you away but still satisfying. - Beef rendang (#20) ($14.00) - stew sauce was tasty. Beef itself was a mixed bag; some tender pieces, others slightly dry. - Roti canai (#3) ($10.00 large for 2) - decently flaky but pricey for what you get. - Satay chicken (#4) ($10.00 for 4) - chicken was a touch on the dry side. Trip #2 We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 8:15pm). - Roti canai ($10.00 large) - the roti was a touch undercooked in the middle. Didn't have that satisfyingly crispy, flaky texture. - Laksa ($13.50) - decided to give their laksa a second try. The broth is light and lacks depth. I'm puzzled by the red onions; adds a harsh sharpness to the bowl. - Fish cake curry (#26) ($14.00) - tamarind added a nice balance to the chili. Fish cakes were tasty. Would have liked a bit more rice to soak up the sauce. - Tom kha (#30) ($12.50) - this was our favourite of the dishes we ordered. The lemongrass and acidity from the kaffir lime really shine through. J wanted to have this broth with the ingredients from the laksa bowl. Cash or debit only. To my surprise, this is of the best meals I've had recently (and I eat out a lot). The interior decor is...funny lol. They inherited the space from a diner and did not reno. Totally fine with me. The laksa was so flavorful. I rarely drink the broth of any soup noodle I order, but I drank this one. It was not salty or greasy, just packed with flavor. Generous meat portions with 3 big chunks of chicken. Tofu puffs were yum. It's spicy though so be warned. Both the vermicelli and yellow noodle tasted good. I'm definitely coming back! read more

I've driven past this place so many times over the years and I've finally got the chance to try it ! And it does not disappoint in any way. We ordered : Chicken pad Thai - perfect balance of tanginess and spice. Laksa with mixed noodles - it's more on spicer side Than other laksa. But the flavour is all there !!! I finished the whole bowl. But it's big enough to share. Lots of meat and seafood. We'll worth the money. Pork skewers with peanut sauce - THIS WAS THE SHOW STOPPER. You must order this !!! No wonder it's limited quantities. It's soooo good. You can taste the smoke, and the sambal and lemongrass. The peanut sauce is the perfect match for it too. Small roti - very fresh, and the roti was thick and perfect to Pick up the curry sauce. Veggie spring rolls - this one was okay.. I wouldn't order it again though. Over all, I would come back. The laksa came with an option to mix egg noodles with rice vermicelli -- a combo of amazing textures and flavor. Swimming in a tasty pool of curried greatness were lemons, peppers, bean sprouts, tofu, and chicken. The creamy, spicy, savory, and slightly sweet flavors were so pleasurable they reminded me of my first time in Singapore. This place is a gem. I got the Me Gorieng noodles. It tastes like chow mein but way more tastier. I really like the vibes of this place. It's like an old school diner on the inside but it serves asian food. Only downside was portion felt a little small. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the noodles here. I tried the Drunken Beef. Very savory and sweet dice. Rice compliments it well and nice that they give you rice and don't charge you extra for it. The only thing is the beef was very chewy so it was overcooked a bit. If you like spicy savory soup, the laksa is very delicious. Our regular haunt when we are feeling the need for soup noodles and need a change from ramen or pho. Lots of free parking around the area which is fantastic. This is a family run restaurant and service is good. Small hole in the wall place that isn't overly big that they can't handle to service everyone. The decor is eclectic and the tables are a funny dimension. Enough about the place. Now the FOOD!! It's just comforting and consistent. Yum. Our goto dishes are the laksa (slightly spicy) and the coconut fried seafood rice. So. Good. And the roti. Yum! Walked into Laksa King and thought I went back in time! Such fun vintage decor reminiscent of a retro diner. Like everyone else, we got the laksa and roti canai. We got the mixed noodles with the laksa since the server told us it was the most popular option. The broth and chicken reminded me a lot of Vietnamese curry, just with some added items like fried tofu and hard-boiled egg. Now for the star of the show, the roti canai. Oh boy, it was so good! We got the double serving to share between 3 people. The roti was crunchy and crispy and buttery and stole my heart. I could probably just eat the roti alone. My only complaint would be that I wish the dal was room-temperature. Not sure if it's supposed to be like that but my preference would have been for it to be at least warm, to go with the warm roti. To finish the meal we got the faluda (cold dessert drink made with noodles, jelly, rose water and served with an ice cream float) and fried banana with ice cream. It was my first time having faluda and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It wasn't too sweet and was very refreshing. I always think that I will try new things but I love the filling comfort of the traditional laksa soup/stew with a whole egg, chicken, prawns, cuttlefish and a creamy spicy curry broth with your choice of rice or wheat noodles ( my fav is to get both). I ordered a vegan laksa, via Uber eats. I lived in Malaysia for 4 years, so I know a bit about laksa. The spice level is ok, but the broth lacks something. The soup is full of green peppers and mushrooms- this is totally not legit - and I hate those! There's also raw onions in it, I'm not sure why but it is not nice. There's not enough tofu in it. Another no frills restaurant..have been here a few times and just love it. They spend their time and money on what matters the most and that is making good food. The restaurant must have been an old 50's diner as it still has paintings of cars and booths which resemble way back. If you just want good food come here. This time I order the laksa with a mix of rice noodle and vermicelli and also roti. The laksa soup is nice and creamy with a bit of spice and just right. Noodles were done right..this is a can't miss really. Roti was good, other places make it flakier, but the flavour was nice and he curry that came with it was a bit cold. Other times it was hot, but still tasty. Even though I didn't have this time, but the Singapore Curry Noodles is worth a try. They don't make it like other restaurants with the yellow curry powder, but the flavor is similar but just so much more satisfaction here. We had late lunch at Laksa King. We found they're not busy at all, may be just a bit late at 1ish. I heard they served authentic Burmese and Malaysian dishes. Great, let's try it. We ordered an appetizer spicy squid, it turned out quite disappointed. Boiled squid and stir fried with Costco Thai spicy sauce. Laksa - their signature dish. The portion quite generous but served with small shrimps. It didn't taste like authentic coconut curry broth. Nasi Goreng - I would say some HK style café make better Malaysian fried rice than them. Update: came back to give it another chance Oct 2023. Still disappointing! Sizes reduced further, menu prices still hasn't been updated (see my previous review) but the owner just verbally tell you to expect prices will be different when you pay the bill. The worst of all is the tea leave salad was very small. The 3 of us each took a tablespoon full and it's already half of it. It was extremely salty we didn't want to eat anymore. I told the owner we want to cancel. She said rudely that we are not allowed to cancel but she could fix it. We said ok and guess what! She came back with the same left-over amount of "fixed" salad! Not only not apologetic but doesn't even have the decency to replace the order!
