The coconut flavour is out of this world and mushrooms excellent. - the crispy banana blossoms salad is very unique. I loved the banana blossoms. What a fantastic experience! The dining experience is a multi-course pre-fixe menu in a modern Thai setting. The majority of the courses came out family style for our party of 5, each beautifully plated and smelling so good! The Tom Kha and watermelon w/smoked salmon bite were my least favorite (not in a "don't like" way... just not on my favorites for everything we tried). Otherwise I'm not sure what I'd choose as a favorite! It was all so delicious! I'm including a photo of the menu, as I couldn't even tell you all that we ordered! My brother and I opted to do the wine pairing with the meal, and I think with those selections, they were more take it or leave it for me. Maenam ended up being my favorite meal in my trip to Vancouver. The restaurant took care of my party very well throughout the set menu experience, and it was a very reasonable price. Several large seafood items must be ordered in advance, including the lobster claypot. If you are a fan of glass noodles and seafood, I would definitely recommend the dish! My favorite dishes were actually some of the starting bites, but the sable fish main was also very strong. It's an exquisite Thai restaurant that offers fresh, delicately balanced dishes for you to enjoy. Of course it's easier finding this place when your date loves food as much as you do and has a special back for the best places visit. You're greeted in the most polite way possible. Your sever guides you through the menu and make recommendations based on acquired taste for certain things. They ask if you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies. Truly top notch service. This is my second time here. First time was with a friend for dine out and it was a bit disappointing. This time it was very tasty! We got the pad thai, shrimp chuchi curry, chicken skewers and tom sap soup. The pad thai was tasty - noodles were chewy and sauce was good. Could use a bit more smokiness though. Chicken skewers also needed more smokiness and caramelization but the peanut and chili vinegar sauces paired well. The shrimp chuchi curry was very good - flavourful and shrimp were grilled perfectly. Lastly, the Tom sap was by far my favourite - sweet, sour soup with a kick. I went here for lunch with a friend during Dine Out Vancouver. I've been to Maenam a few times, but this was the first time for my friend. We had reservations so we were seated quickly, but the restaurant never more than half full that day. The space continues to look pretty traditional and classic. Since we already saw the Dine Out menu, we quickly ordered. Although all the food wasn't bad, I think it suffered a common issue with Dine Out menus - quality suffers to bulk production. The dishes didn't seem freshly prepared, nor carefully plated compared to previous visits. Service was adequate, but also didn't hit the same standard I've experienced before. So overall, it was OK. Came here last night for a light dinner with a friend and had a great experience! Interiors were absolutely beautiful inside and at around 6pm the restaurant filled up quickly! I wish I got to try more items on the menu, I'll definitely return for that. My friend and I shared the steamed mussels and shrimp pad thai and it was sooo flavourful. The mussels hit the spot and had a nice thai basil/citrus flavour and was paired well with a fish sauce dip. The shrimp pad thai was absolutely delicious and had the authentic tamarind taste. Our server(s) were very friendly and helpful. Not shy of telling us their favourites. This day we were here to celebrate a big bday. So it has to be perfect. The dining partner wasn't disappointed. We started with 3 small bites. Very tiny but interesting. Then followed by the soup of our choice-hot and sour clam and mushroom soup. So so for me, but my dining accomplice enjoyed it. Then next we had 3 main courses to share, curry beef, pork ribs and duck confit salad. Finally followed by 3 sweets. Needless to say we were stuffed. The food was flavourful and well crafted. Steep prices, however it was a pleasant dining experience. Service was upscale to reflect the prices. We had the tasting menu. The soup was the best part of the meal. It might be because I was so famished and it was the first hot flavourful dish that I had. I would return if I could have the exact same soup that tasted exactly the same. By a friend's recommendation, we made an appointment here on a Sunday evening and was blown away by the chef's tasting menu. When I think of fancy meals at a high price point, I automatically assume that each dish will be small and that I'd leave hungry. I was wrong! At Maenam, not only was the portion perfect for 3 people, the mouth watering and unique flavors from that meal is something we still talk about to this day. Even though we struggled to finish dessert, we did it anyway and did not regret it. The service was unbelievably wonderful! Each person we had the pleasure of speaking with was remarkably kind and never made us plebs feel out of place. If I lived in Vancouver, I'd come here once a month! Fancy-ish Thai restaurant in Kitsilano, Michelin recommended for the year. Mid-small interior, has a number of small tables and also seats at the bar. Nice interior. We made the reservation for the chef's tasting menu which is $88 per person, and the portions are for 2 people. On the tasting menu, there are 3 options each for soup, salad, curry, and stir fry. You also get snacks to start, and desserts. The snacks were 3 different one-bite items, each with a different seafood paired with various ingredients. The most notable thing was how sweet some of the snacks were. Next up is the relish, which is prawn coconut and salted egg mix, and they provide some leaves to wrap up the relish. Was refreshing. Moving on to the soup, we got the halibut hot and sour soup. It wasn't really that spicy, but has a nice sour flavor that's not overly sour. Tastes like tom yum with halibut. Next up with the wagyu steak salad, which tasted like a standard salad with beef. The two mains we got were the red curry with smoked duck breast, and the turmeric lamb shoulder stir fry. The red curry was very sweet. The sweetness dominated the flavor of the duck as well. The lamb stir fry was in contrast salty and heavily flavored, and they put some peas in there. Finally, the dessert portion included 3 different items. A sorbet that was tart and refreshing, a brown sticky rice ball that looked a donut hole but was only mildly sweet, and slices of what was a less sweet version of creme brulee. For our soup, we chose the Tom Kha which I am still dreaming of. The delicata squash was perfect. For our salad we had the duck leg, which had a decent amount of meat on it! We chose to do the lunch set menu, which comes with an appetizer, a salad, a curry, and a stir fry for $45 per person. Went to Vancouver for a business trip. Met up with some friends who lives in Vancouver and recommend trying Maenam. Cute small Thai restaurant with a very cool modern vibe. Service was excellent with the server being super attentive. We decided to go for their 14 course tasting menu. I wasn't able to post all the pics as it only allows me to add 10 pics to this post. The food was so amazing, small amounts so you can taste the flavours and also so you won't get too full. You simply can't go wrong with wagyu beef. Perfect marbling giving it lots of flavor and tenderness. The dressing has a nice kick. Not shy on flavors at all. 5/5 Pad Thai: Rice noodles, tamarind, peanuts, tofu, chives, sprouts, egg, and prawns. A classic. Soft noodles, tofu and egg; crunchy peanuts and sprouts - make the texture profile for this old time favorite. 4/5 Thai Iced Tea: Although they have a lot of delicious sounding non-alcoholic beverages on the menu, I had to stick with the tried and tested. New favorite thai place in Vancouver! Came here to celebrate an anniversary, was greeted by the nice staff. We had reservations and were seated pronto. It was our first time here so we asked for some recommendations, our server recommended the thai cupcakes with BC sidestripe prawns. She mentioned that we highly never have had anything like this before and boy was she right. So many flavors, blended into a perfect bite, it was our favorite dish for the night! A second starter we had was the grilled thai sausage and crispy rice salad-- another dish which we've never tried before, very delicious with a bit of tang. On top of that we had the pad thai was prawns which were cooked to perfection. The prawns were moist and juicy, not dry at all. Second main was the grilled beef green curry, also very delicious. For starters, this is a lovely Thai restaurant on West 4th. I want to say that my stars on this review are only a reflection of my thoughts based on my personal tastebuds and palate relative to the overall service and cost of dining. I still highly respect this restaurant based on the foundation and the skilled chef who began this restaurant's story, but it may have just not been one for me to enjoy. I decided to try out this restaurant earlier this month for my anniversary with the bf after hearing about Maenam float around Vancouver's food scene. The restaurant is small but cozy and it was filled with the hustle and bustle of chatter on a busy Friday night. We opted for the chef's tasting menu ($68/ pp) to get a full sample of Thai cuisine. When the amuse bouche rolled out, the high anticipation began. I don't completely recall what was on top of the pineapple and taro chip but what I do remember is the lovely mash of soft/hard textures combined with sweet and savoury flavours. Next up, the hot and sour prawn soup. It was HOT and sour indeed!!! The bf loves and can highly tolerate spice (like 2x spicy korean fire noodle type spice lol) so unlike me who had to back out after one bowl, he completely took over this dish. Needless to say his entire face was very moist with sweat after finishing it. I think it's a great starter dish to open up the tastebuds and prepare your appetite for the rest to come but be wary of the spice! The steamed mussels followed promptly with a side of thai basil nam jin dipping sauce. I really liked how the sauce was sweet and sour, it worked great at neutralizing the 'sea' in the mussels. I munched on it with a side of roti and it worked great together. Now after the mussels, there was a very long silence between it and the main dishes. I think dish timing could be a bit better, to bridge the appetizers and mains closer and perhaps space apart the mains a bit more - Once the duck salad rolled out the curry and squid followed immediately after and we were overwhelmed with quite a few things to work at. I quite liked the duck salad - it was a good mix of protein and leafy greens and hit the spot of savoury and sweet. Likewise, the curry also hit a sweet spot with tender beef and eggplant inside. The stir fried squid was well cooked, not overly chewy but I had a hard time searching for a prominent flavour profile. Dessert was probably the highlight of my night! Sadly I can't remember the name of this dessert but the texture was to die for...I love subtle sweet and wet cake texture (that sounds not appetizing and odd but for reference I love a well soaked tiramisu.) Overall, I think it occurred to me that I couldn't quite find the perfect 'umami' within this tasting menu. Portions were good and service was overall prompt and I found my mouth salivating and generally liking what I ate throughout dinner but I didn't taste complexity or the long lasting satisfaction on my tastebuds. Fantastic cocktails ! I would come to Maenam for them alone. Delicious food. Been here several times over the years and every dish has knocked it out of the park. Last night we had chicken Tom Yum soup, mussels and spicy tofu salad to start. The mussels came with a dipping sauce that was heavenly. Following these dishes we shared lingcod with 8 spiced sauce ( omg my favorite. Definitely not good for you as it's fried but for a special treat yes!) , stir fried crispy pork with purple eggplant, and braised beef curry. The beef melted in my mouth it was so tender. Get the homemade roti with peanut sauce too. Service is attentive and warm. The ambience is classy and cozy and covid safe. Plexiglass barriers all over the place. Technology may be good but sometimes the old fashion way of calling the restaurant may also work, this is how we got our table! Nowadays, using APPs to book a table is almost the norm, but in my attempt to do this at Maenam, I was not able to do so for two occasions, as the APP says the night was full and automatically wanted me to book for the next day, on my 3rd attempt, I decided to give them a call, and with my luck we finally got a table! Once you are inside, you are greeted with a warm and relaxing dining room with a view of the gorgeous Bar! Staffs are casual yet friendly, provided us with just the right time for us to decide. Orders for tonight: Brussels Sprouts Salad - lets say we will skip this next time, I find it lacks any flavours and was just a fried sprouts with nuts etc. Fried Wings - This second dish totally salvaged the impression we had on the first dish, fried to perfection, with very little grease, the outer shell was light and crispy, the meat were cooked perfectly with juices oozing out when you bit in! The tamarind dipping sauce gave the whole dish an extra 10 stars!! Halibut with Green Curry - Best Green Curry in Vancouver is all I can say! Pad Thai - Their version is slightly on the moist side, which I really enjoyed, all the flavours were well balanced! Tasty, way overpriced Thai food with plenty of vegan options. This is fancy Thai food with some dishes being fairly authentic and others being only Thai-inspired. The prices are exorbitant, and in my opinion, the quality does not come close to warranting the prices. That said, the food is very good. We ordered: -Crispy Brussels sprouts salad (vegan; $18 plus tax). This dish was not really Thai at all, other than the light lemongrass character. The sprouts were charred nicely, but the dish was missing something. It was under-salted and just all-round under-seasoned. Not bad, but this was a somewhat disappointing starter (especially for the price). 3/5 -Tofu larb salad ($29). This was solid. Very citrusy and acidic, but balanced with just enough sweetness. The tofu was cubed and cooked perfectly, accompanied with some greens, crispy shallows, and a touch of thin radish. Nice stuff. 4/5 -Tom gati vegetable curry ($32). I'd never had a white curry before, so this was a nice change. It's served with various root veggies (rutabaga being the centrepiece) and kale, but I think they change up the veggies since the menu said we'd get different veggies. The curry itself was wonderful, uniquely and richly spiced, and very hearty. It doesn't come with rice, so be sure to order some steamed rice on the side. 4.5/5 -Vegan pad thai ($25). This was wonderfully done. They got the tamarind character down perfectly, served with the traditional mix of sprouts, green onion, crushed peanuts, and chili flakes on the side. And this vegan version comes with thin strips of fried tofu. Excellent stuff. 5/5 The service was top-notch, very attentive and helpful. The food is certainly good here, but only slightly better than vegan Thai food you can get elsewhere in town, which does not warrant such prices. I had no idea this was a Michelin recommended restaurant, but I can see why after having visited. Great place to go with a group, especially if you do the chef's tasting menu. With 4 people, we were able to pick 2 of the 3 dishes in each of the categories. In the end, we samples at least 10 different dishes including relishes, soups, meats, salads and desserts. Our dishes included: -HERITAGE PORK NAHM PRIK ONG - Giesbrecht farms heritage pork relish with roasted garlic & chilies, assorted crudité -HOT & SOUR CLAM & MATSUTAKE MUSHROOM SOUP - Clear hot & sour broth, local clams, holy basil -ROASTED CHICKEN & BC CHANTERELLE MUSHROOM SOUP - Roasted free-run chicken, garlic chili oil, light coconut broth, thai basil -BC ALBACORE TUNA LAAB SALAD - Garlic oil confit Tuna, toasted rice powder, prickly ash, Thai aromatics -LOD CHONG - Pandan jelly, coconut milk, maple syrup, crushed ice All the food was excellent. Great way to taste so many different flavors. I would note some dishes were a little heavier on the coconut cream. Cocktails were flavorful and new flavors I have never had before. Service was sincere. Drinks were delicious. Food comes in generous portions - we enjoyed the tasting menu. Easy to get to from downtown.
