I stopped by here for a meal with some folks after a long day out. There's a lot of Vietnamese restaurants along Victoria Drive so this was the first time I was aware of Viet Mama. I grabbed a dry vermicelli bowl. The restaurant wasn't very busy throughout our time. I thought the food was fine. I'm not sure if it was bland as is or if I needed to add more fish sauce, but it didn't taste a whole lot. I didn't hate it but it could have been better. I might come back in future to try other stuff. It was pretty chill for a spot overall and wasn't super noisy. It was 11:30pm and I hadn't had pho in the longest time so I was on the hunt for a 24 hour or late night Vietnamese restaurant to make it happen. I checked on yelp and was a bit surprised as to how few of these restaurants seem to exist anymore. It used to be the lower mainland was inundated with them. Maybe I'm just not in the know anymore. Anyhoo, I made my way to the Viet Mama cafe. As I pulled up to the entrance I remembered I had been here twice before a few years back. The first time, I remember, was good but don't remember anything else. The second time I left because everything I attempted to order they seemed to be out of. Hopefully third time would be the charm. I don't know why I do this but I went for pho but ended up getting a rice plate of grilled lemongrass chicken. I should've gone with the pho. The food arrived fairly quickly and I started to add some sriracha and hoisin sauce to my rice. Usually when I order a rice plate at other restaurants it comes with some lettuce, shredded carrots, a few cucumber slices, and sometimes some daikon. On my plate was a sad little piece of lettuce, 5 pieces of shredded carrot, one small tomato and cucumber slice. Then I tried a piece of chicken. I love lemongrass. The smell and taste of it, I am so happy and grateful to whomever discovered it and started using it in their cooking. As I brought the piece to my mouth I noticed there wasn't even a hint of a lemongrass scent and even less of a taste. Not to mention half of the chicken was fat and skin. I also ordered a fried egg with my plate which came a few minutes later. It was actually the best part of the meal. I ate about a third of it and asked for a takeout box, packed it up, paid my bill, and left. I ate half of it the next morning and threw the rest out. It's not very good the next day. The service was friendly and fast but I will not return here no matter how much I may crave some late night pho even though I'd probably end up ordering a rice plate. read more

Viet Mama Cafe has slowly grown on me and becoming my go to place for my Pho cravings. They serve a variety of Vietnamese dishes such as dry vermicelli, lemongrass chicken rice, spring rolls and have a drinks menu of smoothies and milk tea etc. Their beef tendon pho (A5) is my favorite Pho and I like their broth a lot. Another favorite dish that I like when dining in house is their grilled pork chop with eggs on rice (R10). I think their foods taste much better when dining in but this place definitely serves many many takeout orders...as it's quite convenient to order online from them. Their app has alerts to tell you when order is ready for pickup and even offers discount codes. This is a casual diner that opens late till 3am and I appreciate that they maintain friendly service even in the wee hours. We decided to try out this restaurant . For a Friday night, it wasn't busy at all. There was only one other table and don't recall seeing any take out or uber eats orders. We each ordered a meal and I ordered mine without peanuts but my friend wanted peanuts in her meal. Both came without peanuts. We didn't bother. The server was busy doing other things all night and didn't come to check on us or refill our tea until asked. While portions are huge, the food taste was mediocre. Not sure we will be back. I've ordered take out pho before, but perhaps with Viet Mama, since it's a Northern Vietnamese joint and they use wider/flatter noodles it's better to eat in the restaurant. The soup had good flavor though. I also ordered the chicken with sticky rice and it could use a bit more salt. I still give 3/5 stars because it's not bad. Easily missed amongst a slew of other Vietnamese restaurants. We dined in on a Friday evening that was initially quiet but saw as the steady flow of customers arrived after. We ordered Beef Stew with rice noodles, Grilled Lemongrass Chicken with Springroll and vermicilli and Beef Carpaccio. The noodle dishes were incredibly flavourful and generous. The rice noodles were on the softer end but the beef brisket was tender and fatty. The chicken was juicy and paired well with the crisp lettuce and noodles. The grilled pork (Banh Mi Thit Nuong) came out temperature hot and the bread was so crispy and stuff with good amount of veggies. When simple stuff is made right then I knew it could only get better. The coffee, we had one hot and one cold, came to the table ready to drink and not needing to wait for the slow drip. Creamy, smooth and strong. For the noodles, we had the Spicy Think Vermicelli. This soup dish originate from the middle of Vietnam and can be very spicy. This one was but I was able to make it though. If you won't like or can't take spicy food then this dish it not for you. Spring rolls were fresh and hot, hand-rolled and fried to the perfect crunchy golden. Bahn Nhan - $14.95. Everything came in a healthy portion. The peanut noodles could have called for more peanut flavour. But I enjoyed it regardless. They were also really generous with the toppings. The rice rolls were very soft and the filling was a bit dry but when dipped in the provided sauce it was good. I liked that they provided fish cakes and when wrapped together was very good. The rice topped with chicken and spring roll was I believe the smallest portion of the three. The spring roll was very crispy. The chicken had a very strong lemon grass and wasn't too dry. Delicious food with amazing service! The ladies were very attentive, always on their foot to check any new comers, or any one needs to order. I've been here a few times since they opened, and have been very happy with my meals. It's new and it feels very bright inside. It is a small restaurant, but they manage to fit quite a lot of seating inside. Every time I've been here, I've ordered the same thing. It's the crab meat with fish cake noodle soup. It comes with a plate of herbs and chiles. I tend to not drink a lot of the broths when I get noodle soups because I find they can be too salty, but this was definitely not the case. The broth was very flavourful, yet light. I felt like I could drink the whole bowl of soup and not feel dehydrated after. Overall, it was a satisfying bowl of noodles. Tasty Vietnamese spot in the block of Vietnamese spots along Victoria. There must be at least 6 Vietnamese restaurants within a block of this place. Parking is available on Victoria, as well as the side streets. This place closes early, at 1900 as of the time of writing. Be sure to plan your visit accordingly. The place is fairly new and modern. The place faces W so the interior becomes a bit of a scorcher in the evenings. Fortunately there are blinds. Pretty cool looking neon style sign on the side. Staff are friendly. Menu pricings are a wee bit expensive, at $13-15 for most dishes as of the time of writing. I was going to try the spring rolls but they were $8 for 2. Yikes. The #14 vermicelli crab meat with fish cake was quite tasty. The soup is of the clear broth type. The noodles (bun) were noticeably thinner than those of other places. Special mention for the freshness and springiness. The fish cakes and fish pieces were decent. Served with vegetables and tomatoes and green onions. There was a bit of dill in there too, but the dish could've used a bit more. The vegetable toppings were a mix of 90% chopped lettuce and 10% bean sprouts. Portion size is smaller than the competition. There is only 1 size available, which is comparable to a "regular" size at other pho places. In other words, my friends and I left somewhat hungry. We ordered the beef carpaccio, bun bo hue, bun rieu and ice coffee. Upon ordering my BBH, the lady who was taking my order was asking me how spicy I want it. I've never been asked this question in my life and so I asked her how spicy was it for her to ask me for my spice level. I told her I can eat spicy but she made it sound super spicy. Comes with a generous serving of chopped lettuce and fresh basil. The dipping sauce was delicious. We had the strangest experience ordering a few Bahn mi for take out from this restaurant. It took the rather unfriendly server a good 30 minutes to make 4 sandwiches. We asked that they didn't put chilies in two of the sandwiches and the server looked at us with a "what are you talking about" expression on their face and said we don't put chilies in our sandwiches. I am pretty sure it's common to have jalapeño chilies in bahn mi. The server ended up putting fairly big pieces of Thai chilies in the sandwiches. I love spicy foods and I can tolerate the heat but that level of heat and flavour takes away from the quality of the sandwich. I order a lemon grass chicken or pork sandwich thinking that the meat would be freshly grilled...they were remade, frozen and reheated in the microwave. Kind on the phone and in person when picking up, the service makes a big difference in an experience! The vermicelli crab meat with fish cake and noodle soup was not bad but I found the soup a little bit too salty. There was a good amount of fish cake and the crab patty was very flavourful. The raw beef salad had great textured beef with plenty of onions and herbs on top. It was very flavourful without being too heavy and was great for a hot evening! I hesitated a bit because there was no one inside on a clear Sunday around 5:45 p.m. But it looked very clean inside so I decided to give it a try. The staff was very friendly. We stopped by for Vietnamese food over the weekend. We ordered a number of items to try. The highlight items worth trying were the meat rice roll (available only on Sundays) and the vermicelli crab meat with fish cake noddle soup. The meat rice roll was a meal on its own. The rice rolls were thin sheets of steamed rice batter mixed with pork meat and topped with dried shrimp and fried shallots. The side of fried ham added the needle protein to make the meal more substantial and filling. This dish is not found at many restaurants so it is worth trying if you have never tried it before. The vermicelli crab meat with fish cake noodle soup was amazing. The flavours were great. I could taste the crab flavour in the broth. The fish cake pieces soaked up the broth nicely. The noodle portion was decent. Lastly, I tried the spring roll. It was a very good spring roll. I could not taste much of the crab flavour. It was made well, but I prefer spring rolls made with rice wrapper instead of this wheat wrapper. Also, I was looking at previous Yelp photos and the current spring rolls just look like average spring rolls. I was a bit disappointed as I was expecting what other Yelpers ordered and received. Service was good. High chairs available for young children. Covid precautions were in place. Staff wore face masks and hand sanitizer was available. Last weekend, Mr. and I went to Viet Mama Cafe, which specializes in Northern Vietnamese cuisine. It is a family-owned business, and you can tell from their service that they really care about customers' thoughts and hope to offer the best to them. All the dishes here have no MSG and use fresh ingredients. Viet Mama Cafe is clean and bright, with a decent amount of seats. They have a small menu, but still with a good amount of varieties. One thing I noticed is that they put pandan leaf in their tea, which gives a soothing, aromatic flavor. I really enjoyed the small detail and care they put, even to a cup of tea. I ordered a few items to share with Mr. - Meat Rice Roll (#8 Banh Cuon Nhan), Crab Meat Noodle with Fish Cakes (#12 Bun Rieu Cua Cha Ca), Chicken Noodle (#13 Pho Ga), and an Iced Vietnamese Coffee. Yes, I think we ordered slightly too much for two people, without knowing their portions. The Meat Rice Roll first arrived, and it is rice flour with pork and shrimp, topped with fried shallot. On the side, it has a bowl of pork meatballs and fish sauce, along with fried ham and vegetables. It was my first time trying Vietnamese rice rolls, and it tastes amazing. We dipped the rice roll in the warm fish sauce broth, and I really enjoyed it. The broth is not salty and relatively light, which allows the rice rolls to shine. I also think the pork meatballs are a great pairing in the broth. Chicken Noodle is a shredded chicken soup noodle with thick noodles. The broth is clear and light, but still flavorful. The shredded chicken is tender, but I wish it has more meat in the bowl. The portion is huge, but I feel like it is mostly noodles. Crab Meat Noodle with Fish Cakes is a popular pho, which has real crab meat, fish cakes, tofu, and vegetables. Unlike the chicken noodle, it uses thin noodles, which I think a thicker noodle should be used, so the noodles can absorb more flavors from the broth. The broth is not as flavorful as expected, but the owner said we can ask for fish sauce next time. I think the broth lacks the crab flavor, which fish sauce might not be helpful in this case. It has a generous amount of fish cakes and tofu, as well as a lot of noodles. The Iced Vietnamese Coffee here is served differently, which is shaken up with the condensed milk. I found the coffee to be slightly too sweet, and I still prefer the traditional drip Vietnamese coffee. *** Overall Impression *** Viet Mama Cafe is a newly opened Northern Vietnamese restaurant, and I can feel their passion for the food. However, there were some hits and misses. My personal favourite is the Meat Rice Roll, and I would totally return for more. As weird as it sounds, I do wish the portion for the pho is slightly smaller or with fewer noodles. After a few bites, I felt stuffed eating just the noodles, which is difficult for me to enjoy other dishes. Meat Rice Roll / Banh Cuon Nhan This is the first time I tried a Vietnamese rice roll and I enjoyed the thinness of the crepe as it reminded me of my Cantonese rice rolls. However, I wish there was more filling because according to my Chinese-Vietnamese friend, she is use to rice rolls with more fragrant filling. It was true, at times, I forgot what I was eating as the rice roll masked the flavours of the filling. I absolutely loved the fried ham and pork meatballs in this dish! The star could have been the pork meatballs because it was soaked in a fish sauce broth and with the addition of chilis, it was a fragrant bite! Special Beef Noodle | Pho Dac Biet The beef broth flavour was subtle as other spices such as lemongrass swept the broth towards a sweeter side. So, the broth ends up being very light and clean but no complaints about that. Great meat quality. My only observation was that the noodles were quite short and made it difficult to pick up with my chopsticks! Crab Meat Noodle with Fish Cakes | Bun Rieu Cua Cha Ca It is difficult to compete with long standing Vietnamese restaurants serving Bun Rieu but as my first try, I think Viet Mama Cafe did a simple and clean version. For those who are not too familiar with Vietnamese food, coming here to try is a good start. I loved the texture of the fish cakes as it was filled with dill! The tomato broth would have excelled even more if there were slices of tomatoes. This is because the tomatoes in the broth had most of its fresh, tangy flavour extracted and only traces of its flesh was left. Potentially more dill would have elevated the dish more too but can't say too much as I am not a culinary expert on Vietnamese cuisine! They're located next to Fatty Cow Seafood Hot Pot along with several competing Vietnamese restaurants (Hoang Yen, Hoi An Cafe, La Maison Da Nang, Cafe Dang Anh and Hanoi Old Quarter). The menu is limited to 20 items; appetizers and entrees (pho, vermicelli, bahn cuon and rice). You can also get your bean sprouts cooked (but you need to request it). Trip #1 We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 6:45pm) for takeout. Service was prompt; our food was ready in 10 minutes even though we were quoted 15. - Bahn cuon nhan (#17) ($14.95) - the rice rolls were solid, topped with Vietnamese ham and fried shallots. The nuoc maam was well balanced and came with three small (but mighty) pork meatballs. They reminded me of spring roll filling but tastier. - Pho tai ga (#8) ($12.95) - broth was piping hot. The tai was very tender unlike the chicken, which was a touch tough. - Bun rieu cua cha ca (#14) ($12.95) - this was my favourite of the bowls; light, clean and refreshing although light on the dill (compared to other versions in the city). Crab meat was packed. It also came with tomato wedges, meat balls (very tasty) and tofu puffs. Trip #2 We dropped in on a Wednesday for a late lunch (around 1:45pm). - Herbs - two different types of herbs for our bowls. One of the packs also had pickled onions with an unexpected light kick to it. We were even given a side of chili flakes. - Cha gio (#2) ($7.95 for 2) - these were light and crispy. Filling was decent. A couple dollars overpriced. - Bun rieu cua tom (#13) ($12.95) - enjoyed this bowl over the fish cake. The crab meat is excellent and flavourful. Broth is on the light and cleaner side. The noodles are of the thin, vermicelli style; decent but it doesn't fill me up (compared the usual pho noodles). - Bun rieu cua cha ca (#14) ($12.95) - again, the broth is light and clean. Does it beat Hoang Yen across the street? Personally, I don't think so but it's still a solid bowl. - Pho ga (#9) ($12.95) - J got this for himself and enjoyed it. - Bahn cuon nhan (#17) ($14.95) - still as good as the first we had it. Viet Mama! Finally got a chance to eat here and boy was I amazed with their quality of food and service! We went around 1pm or so and it wasn't too busy. I noticed they had a less common dish, the Crab Meat Noodle with fish cake so definitely had to try that out. Also ordered the spring roll and Meat Rice Noodle dish (the main thing I wanted to try!), Clear dumplings and a coffee. 1. The Crab Meat Noodle dish has such a clean and rich broth! The first sip of the soup totally wowed my tastebuds! The dish was literally jam packed with ingredients. They give you more stuff over noodles so that is definitely a plus! For $12.95 it's a great price for the quality you get. 2. The Meat Rice Noodle dish was by far the best I've had! The ratio was so on point! It comes with a side of Vietnamese ham, a fish sauce based soup with 3 mini meatballs( the filling in the roll). The rice noodles were super fresh and thin but it's clear since it's a 30 year+ technique and recipe that as been passed down! 3. The Spring Rolls! They were nice and crispy and has a lot of filling! The taste was great but I'm I did feel weird eating a spring "roll" that wasn't in a cylinder shape. But don't be fooled by the shape cause it still tasted amazing. 4. The Clear Dumpling. A dish that's not typically served in most Vietnamese restaurants. It's a clear tapioca dimpling that's typically filled with shrimp and pork belly. The filling was pretty yummy but I felt like there was a bit too much wrap. Something to try for sure but not something id be coming back specifically for. 5. Vietnamese Coffee. It's usually served in a drip filter and handed to you over a glass with condensed milk at the bottom. They served premixed and ready to drink. The owner specified that the drink was a combination of three types of coffees. I found that drink to be quite tasty. All in all it was a really tasty meal! Something that seems to have picked up more steam in the Vancouver food scene lately is bánh cuốn. Similar to Chinese rice rolls, bánh cuốn rice sheets tend to be much thinner and more delicate. I decided to try the ones at Viet Mama Cafe on Victoria Drive as I've been hearing good things about this place. In addition to the Bánh Cuốn Nhan ($14.95), I wound up ordering their Salad Rolls ($6.95 for 2pc) and Spring Rolls ($7.95 for 2pc). While I found the salad roll to be a bit standard, the unusually flat spring rolls was a stunner with a good crisp on the deep-fried rice wrapper which encased the generous amount of pork, shrimp, crab and veggie filling. Of course, the main event here is the meat rice rolls which has a pork/shrimp filling that's sprinkled with fried shallots and served with Vietnamese ham (in addition to meat balls which come separated in a container of sauce). This is the first time I've tried bánh cuốn and I have to admit that I really liked the lightness of this dish. Definitely pair this with their crispy spring rolls for some textural contrast. read more

***** Foodsafe Alert ***** Best place avoid !! The whole place smells like in trash land where fish sauce smells all over entire place. Order two Vietnamese sandwich, the lady was in lalaland ring in 1 only then had to ring in 2nd one. Saw the kitchen guy pull pre-cook meat from a bucket sat in danger zone room temp and reheated. I pray todays food not going kill me. Food fly on fish sauce jug without plastic wrap cover it. While wait for my food. The same lady ring my food in then prep the sandwich at front. Didn't wear glove nor handwash. Only wear glove which suspect not clean ? Handle my cooked meat load in sandwich. After she done, she decide just hand me 1 instead 2. Maybe she had too much marijuana earlier ? Working in lalaland state of mind ? The other part time worker just hand me the food after. Theres a new Vietnamese Restaurant in town! Viet Mama Café aims to be a homey restaurant serving delicious home style Vietnamese food. It definitely hit the mark. I had their pork rice rolls and it was so silky smooth and so good with the special sauce they serve it with. It was definitely one of my favorite. Also tried their crab soup with noodles and that had a nice tanginess of the tomatoes to cut the rich flavours of the crab. I really liked the noodles as well! Next I got to try their tapioca dumpling with pork and that had a really nice chewy texture from the tapioca. They are way bigger than I usually get elsewhere so that was a nice surprise. Had the seafood pho. Very clean tasting broth. And not the usual oily broth as in other places. The noodles were amazing! Perfectly semi-soft and not the usual thick spaghetti width most places use. I was able to drink the broth without post MSG symptoms. My friend had the regular beef pho and he loved the clean taste. Shared the spring roll. Quite meaty and just a little less aromatic, seasoned and crisp as other places. The rice roll is a nice change and new for me. Mild flavour. This is dipped in a sweet broth containing 3 mini beef balls. Everything tasted fresh and clean, not overly fishy or starchy. Each dish came with a good amount of chopped greens (lettuce, mint, cilantro, basil and Vietnamese greens.) I love the spices pickled onion but you only get a tiny portion of it. Everything was well balanced and I left feeling like I ate "clean" food and not smelling like it. The atmosphere is pleasantly bright (not harsh LEDs) and clean with simple furniture and I don't recall seeing any television! Service is great with constant refills of pandan tea.
