It is unbelievable that you can get 2 hours of unlimited drinks and brunch for $50. The bloody mary was STRONG, might I add. We ordered a host of dishes (hangar steak, mac and cheese, shakshuka, flatbreads, the dips, etc...) and everything tasted good (not necessarily a revolutionary culinary experience but REALLY solid good quality food. The restaurant is also beautiful and our server was so kind and attentive. Loved this brunch.

Well this was my first time at Ambar and it was an amazing experience. They offered an all you can eat experience which for the low price was great! As well as all you can drink unlimited beverages. It is a Balkan restaurant so I was able to try different foods and known foods just prepared a different way. All the food came out hot and had a delightful flavor. The service was impeccable as expected. Our waiter was very attentive and catered to our every need and want. He made sure our glasses were never empty. The ambiance was nice. The aesthetic was comfortable but also classy. I would 100% recommend. I will be back soon.

I would come back to try their buffet, but this is a happy hour (food) review only. My friend and I walked in pretty much right at 5 pm and it was fairly empty so we got to enjoy the quiet atmosphere. Service was good and food was overall mediocre with a couple of gems. We didn't get any drinks. Cauliflower ($5): A little too salty, but well crisped. Would order again. Balkan salad ($5): The amount of pepper and onion in this was too high. It didn't taste bad, but the ratios of the ingredients were off. Nice enough veggie option. Lamb sliders ($9): Fine, dry, didn't taste the yogurt sauce. Veal soup ($5): Delicious. Honestly tasted a bit like chicken pot pie with more cream (adding a lemon made it even better). I would come back just to order this if I was ever craving cozy soup. Drunken mussels ($6): These had a strangely strong olive taste, so were a little on the more bitter and briny end.

I thought Ambar's restaurant week deal was amazing - $55 for unlimited plates plus a drink and dessert! I didn't even grab pictures of most of our plates because they were coming out so often. We split as many as we could - the spread sampler plus another feta urnebes spread (our fave!), halloumi, croquettes, lamb lasagna (melt in your mouth), Brussels sprouts, short rib goulash, lamb medallions, chicken skewers (would skip next time), and the white flatbread. Needless to say we were stuffed but still had room for a few bites of baklava and raspberry cake! We also tried the NA mango mule which was really delicious. Our server was wonderful and the dining room was beautiful and cozy. Will definitely be back here!

First time having I believe Balkan food and will definitely come back if in the area. Me and my friend stopped here before going to an event which was right across the street. I see that have an all you can eat selection, but I knew I wasn't going to be able to eat all that so I decided to try the lamb lasagna, Greek salad for some greenery, and an assortment of dips. I was disappointed that they didn't have babaganosh which I absolutely love. But tried the I believe beet hummus and couple others that slips mind. The complimentary breads/pitas were really fresh and had to control myself so I wouldn't be too full to complete my meal. The waitress was really nice to explain the menu and offered suggestions of drinks as this was our first time here. The drink I believe was a kiwi and mint, but whichever it was really good. Nice interior decor that is airy and full of light which opens up the restaurant and makes the are seem bigger that it actually is. 3.75 stars!

Potato hash with random pickles and carrots that shouldn't be there

I had a very mid brunch experience at Ambar. The service was just ok. Had to flag our server down serval times. She walked past my empty drink glass and even saw her look at it and keep going. The food was also just ok. I usually go to the capitol hill location and absolutely love it every single time so I'm not sure why the food was different and not as good. You can't ever beat a bottomless brunch with or without drinks. It's always a good time. I was just disappointed in my overall experience. The potato hash had random pickles and carrots that weren't supposed to be in there. The flat bread and apple waffles (not pictured) were the best item we had. The creamy grits are not creamy at all. The mimosas were strong and just a hint of juice how I like it

    Lamb Lasagna was delicious

Since we don't have many Balkan cuisine options on the west coast, my husband thought it'd be fun to celebrate Valentine's Day with a dinner at Ambar. It was easy to get to the Shaw location, as it's only a few minutes walk from the Howard university/shaw street metro exit. Once we arrived, we realized we accidentally booked our reservation at another location, at Capitol Hill! Thankfully the staff were very understanding and told us they could honor our reservation at this location. After everything got figured out, they handed me a long stem rose as part of the Valentine's Day special. At Ambar, the Valentine's Day dinner included a starter bread and spread with an unlimited amount of small plates, unlimited drinks, and a shared dessert within a 2 hour timeframe. The Valentine's Day menu also included special items and was a total of $99 a person. The menu was quite expansive and everything came in small portions. It was a great way to sample a bunch of dishes, as long as you have the stomach to try everything. After 1.5 hours, 16 small plates and 4 drinks, I'm happy to report that everything was quite delicious! Out of all the dishes, our favorites were the Oxtail Wagyu Gnocchi, the YAGA Roasted Lamb, the Lamb Lasagna, the roasted Cauliflower, the Drunken Mussels, and the Grilled Shrimp. To drink we tried a Balkan-style old fashioned made with a Serbian liqueur instead of whiskey, a kiwi smash mock tail, the sangria, and a mango lemonade. I liked the mango lemonade the most as the old fashioned was a little strong. Our server was very attentive and soft spoken, he also made some excellent recommendations and we felt well taken care of. It was a pricey dinner after adding the tax, restaurant surcharge, and the included gratuity, but it was worth it for the experience. Next time we hit DC, we will come back for the less expensive brunch option.

Ambar is pretty much always my first choice whenever someone asks for a good bottomless brunch option. I like that they have so many different options for drinks as well as a lot of variety on their food menu as well. They can accommodate many different dietary restrictions and nearly every time I've come we've had very good service. With the time limit on brunch it's important to have servers who deliver food and drinks promptly to feel like you're getting your moneys worth and I've never had any issues. I've also been for dinner, which is a much more relaxed, but still extremely pleasant experience

This was a vibey spot that was not too busy for a weekday lunch. The waitress that was helping us was so friendly and great at providing us with recommendations. There's quick service, lovely ambiance, and delicious food for a great lunchtime price. I think this is also a great option for people less familiar with Balkan cuisine (like my gf and I) as you get to try a large variety of options. Some standouts from our order included Steak Tartare (which we ordered twice because of how much we liked it) and the beet salad which is a must try!

    Mushroom crepe
    Mary-Ann L.

Definitely a must try place for relaxed yet deliciously seasoned dining. For $28 it's all you can eat Balkan cuisine with tapas like servings from salads to proteins ranging from Chicken, shrimp, beef, pork, etc. and for $4 more you can have all you can eat dessert as well! Service was friendly. Ambiance is simple, inviting (warm) atmosphere. Highly recommended are: ground beef kabob, grilled shrimp on corn mash, goulash, lamb lasagna. The lamb medallions weren't medallions, were too famey and chewy and accompanying potatoes and carrots were too salty. The mushroom crepe looked appealing but the taste of leeks was overpowering. Still with these misses, rating food for value a solid 5 stars.

    Creamy mussels and lamb lasagna
    Brianna T.

Quite possibly my new favorite spot! You cannot leave without trying the lamb lasagna, creamy mussels, beet dip, and beet salad! They have a lovely outdoor covered patio and the bar upstairs is decorated nicely.

I chose Ambar for my group, and I'm very pleased with our selection. Food Most of our group had dietary restrictions. Several of us were gluten free, and one person was both nut and seafood free. Ambar did an excellent job curating a menu that worked for everyone without making anyone feel like an afterthought. We opted for the Chef's Table experience, which included a spread tasting with veggie sticks and a variety of dishes that were clearly labeled and thoughtfully prepared: * Bean hummus - GF / DF / NF * Ajvar - GF / DF / NF * Balkan salad - GF / DF / NF (one prepared without feta cheese) * Baby carrots - GF / DF / NF (one prepared without tofu sauce) * Roasted peppers - GF / DF / NF * Cauliflower - GF / DF / NF * Baked beans - GF / DF / NF * Roasted lamb - GF / DF / NF * Stuffed pork belly "Sarma" - GF / DF / NF * Brussels sprouts - GF / DF / NF (one prepared without yogurt and bacon) * Seafood platter Everything was flavorful, well-seasoned, and beautifully presented. The meal was so delicious that I didn't even manage to get photos of everything, which rarely happens for me. Just know we dined very well and left completely satisfied. Service The staff was wonderful from start to finish. From the event team member who served as our account manager, to the chef, to the servers and wait staff, everyone was attentive and accommodating. They handled our dietary needs with care and professionalism and made sure our group felt taken care of throughout the evening. Pricing We paid a set fee that we were able to negotiate, and the final rate wasn't too bad for a group experience like this. Just keep in mind that there is an admin fee, a 20% gratuity, and taxes added on top, so be sure to factor that into your planning if you're booking a group event. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend Ambar for group dining, especially if you have guests with dietary restrictions. They made coordination easy, delivered great food, and created a memorable dining experience for our team.

When we walked in, we thought it was gonna be packed because there were no reservations on OpenTable however they were able to see us right away. A very nice touch to add a stem of Rose for the women. I would say that I gave it a lower star rating not because the food was bad. It was actually delicious, but probably the experience itself. The restaurant felt chaotic, and even though all the tables were not completely packed of course there were flowers everywhere people gathering with grandmother's mother's children, etc We were seated in a two people table and all the top past dishes started to pile up very quickly. Instead of monitoring, the progress of the finished dishes and removing those dishes due to space constraint, the dishes came from the kitchen, almost on top of one another, and at one point I had to hold a dish in my hand in order to make space to put a dish on top of another flatbread pan/dish, making things super chaotic. Also dishes had to be put on top of the menu because in order to order additional food, you need to leave at least one copy of the menu at the table. Overall, again the flavors and taste were good, though I might have had similar dishes from other places, and my partner commented that some of it is actually very close to the Capital One landing at DCA. I would just say that it was more due to the chaos and just the way that all the dishes piled up on top of us we felt like we were we had to eat super quickly so that we could stack dishes ourselves and create room at the table. Also, when serving the dishes were not kept level and basically was slide to the side of the dish, making presentation off

The Henri checked off these criteria, and then some! One friend got there early and started at the bar. When we arrived 15 minutes later, we were seated in the dining room room right away. This was about 5:45 PM on a Wednesday night. The dining room room was maybe half full, and we could easily have a conversation without straining to hear each other. When one of us was scooting in our chair toward the table, we noticed soundproofing pads mounted under the tables...so that might account for the ability to hear one another. (Smart design!) I had The Henri Margarita, which was a beet infused casa del sol tequila with beet agave. OMG it was fantastic! My two friends tried mine and ordered one for themselves. Refreshing and delightful. They brought a small bread basket while we waited for entrees, and the sliced bread tasted homemade with a crisp crust and soft interior. Two of us had the Rockfish Imperial: rockfish with a seared crust, topped with lump crab meat, seasonal vegetables and potatoes, with a beet buerre blanc sauce. (Wouldn't that technically be a buerre rouge, then?) It was very well prepared, the seared crust excellent and well seasoned, fish cooked to perfection, and the caulilini (part of the vege medley) was a new vegetable that I've never had before and enjoyed! Not a crumb left on the plate when I was done. Our other friend had the classic Orange Glazed Duck Breast that came with fingerling potatoes and sunchokes. He enjoyed his very much as well. For dessert (and I'm sorry I didn't get the actual name of it) we shared a chocolate mousse cake with banana gelato. The cake was good, the gelato was delicious and refreshing, and the pairing was outstanding. The service was very attentive, and we didn't need to flag anyone down for anything. We even forgot to warn ahead that we had a show to go to! They were able to split the check in thirds, and we were able to check out with plenty of time to head across the street to the theater. I'm still thinking about that beet margarita, five days later! In looking at their menu, they accommodate may allergies and eating preferences, which is always a bonus. Bubbly and browned cheese over a deeply flavorful broth of onions and a slice of French bread. My companion loved the mussels. As to the entree I had what was called Beef Diane, a twist on the classic Steak Diane. It consisted of tips of filet in a delicious gravy flavored with cognac. My companion had Rainbow Trout and was very happy with it. For dessert we both had cheesecake with strawberry sauce. A good example of a New York style cheesecake. Both entrees were served with well cooked mixed vegetables. The portions were not a scaled down size but normal size. The meal comes with fresh baked toasted bread served warm. Delicious. The service was attentive which was to be expected because there were only 3 tables occupied. A complimentary shot of a what I think was kahlua was served at the end of the meal. I cannot believe that I have lived within walking distance to this restaurant for the past three…read moreyears and never have visited. Hey, better late than never. Because of an unexpected change of plans, we decided to have a weekend dinner here, and it turned out to be a great decision - based on the food and service. What really worked for us was that the restaurant has a few outdoor tables, and the outdoor seating is dog-friendly. First, the restaurant has a pretty extensive menu with diverse options. I will admit that I was a bit overwhelmed when the waitress mentioned all of the specials for the evening. It seemed as the list kept going, going and going. Also, the restaurant has a dinner special for about 35 bucks that includes either a 3 course meal or a 2 course meal + a glass of wine. For my dining pleasure, I went with the baked (or maybe it was broiled) flounder that was served with potatoes and green beans. Overall, I thought my meal was absolutely delicious. I do wish the portions were slightly larger. Overall, I thought the service was absolutely wonderful. Our waitress was very friendly and constantly checked in with us to make sure everything was going well. Although we visited around 5:30 pm on a Saturday, I was a bit surpised with how crowed the restaurant became around 6:30 pm. If you are planning to visit around this time, I highly recommend making reservations even though this section of Wheaton can be relatively quiet. Also, the restaurant seems to be very popular with the eldery community. During our visit, I'd say the average age of diners was somewhere in the 60s.

Thankfully we ended up at the Unconventional Diner and it was perfect for satisfying everyone in the group!! We were all able to get tasty drinks- from n/a Hibiscus Citrus lemonade, white wine, a cinnamon toast old fashioned (what? A cereal inspired old fashioned, yes please and it was fantastic!), and a Bourbon basil smash. Then the crew settled on some food-the waiter was patient with the questions and contemplation from the table (thank you!). We started with the SKILLET CORNBREAD with Habanero Honey Butter | Sea Salt (v) And that was melt in your mouth cornbread. Damn. Real cornbread seems hard to come by any more and this is the real deal. And the honey butter and flake sea salt-can't go wrong. I'm a spice weeny-for reals-and this was incredible. It's a MUST get. Across the table we had two of the double cheese burgers (I warned, we have a lack of adventurous eaters) -and they both said the burgers were the best they've had. I had the Philly French double dip, with horseradish cream and caramelized onions-so fantastic-the roast beef was melt in your mouth and the broth was the perfect saltiness. Our fourth got the fried chicken sandwich and really loved the dill pickle slaw that came with it, and the chicken was not over cooked and not raw-perfect! We all had fries with our meals, the thinner kind with light seasoning and none of us could stop eating them, even when we were clearly full, the fries just kept disappearing.
