Looking for a good espresso martini but close proximity to our brunch venue, a girlfriend and I found our way to Kafe Leopold--and it did not disappoint. The location is super cute (both inside and outside). If you don't know it's there, you'll easily miss it as it's down alleyway and down the stairs. It did take a while for someone to acknowledge us, but we went at the start of brunch. So the place was packed! Once we did get the attention of the bartender, things were fine. Our party of three got here around 930pm to end the night with dessert. I decided to get the Sachertorte and for my coffee drink the Melange. Normally, I don't go for any other drinks besides lattes, cappuccinos, or espressos, but the melange, which was coffee topped with a foamy cream sprinkled with cocoa perfectly accompanied my dessert. We decided to sit outside in their quiet patio and it was great we were the only ones seated outside. I guess folks wanted to stay away from the heat. Definitely, this is a great place to end the night for dessert and coffee. I've been here before for their brunch weekends and it is super-packed. I have no reasonable explanation as to why it took me two decades in the area to finally go to Kafe Leopold, but better late than never. I always compartmentalized it as a breakfast/brunch place, but actually the modern indoors and cozy, European alley with the fountain proved me wrong. This place has significant Austrian heritage embedded, but isn't exclusive if that is not your thing. I approve the Wiener veal schnitzel and the melange. Manage your expectations with the potato salad (if your bar is Figlmuller like me) and the pastries (cause this is not Cafe Central.) However, this truly is the closest to a European cafe at the heart of Georgetown. read more

Happy to enjoy another great meal at Kafe Leopold. I tried a couple of things today that I've never had here, including Leopold's Hühnersalat (field green salad with lemon & herb grilled chicken, walnuts, & champagne vinaigrette) and Sachertorte (dark chocolate cake layered with apricot preserves & a chocolate glaze). Everything was delicious. I was surprised at how heavy the chicken was in the chicken to salad ratio. For whatever reason, I expected more salad and less chicken, but hey, I'm like many Americans--meat isn't offensive, especially when it's so tasty and moist. The Sachertorte isn't the same as you will find at the Hotel Sacher in Vienna, but what can you expect? It's definitely a good proxy of the original, and it's a delicious version in its own right. Great service and small Austrian touches like the branded chocolate that accompanied the coffee truly brings back memories of Austria. We had a very poor experience at Kafe Leopold. My friend brought me here because it is (now past tense: was) one of her favourite restaurants in DC. She and her family have come here many times, and the service has been excellent. I was so excited to try it out, and my friend made a dinner reservation for us. However, we received very subpar service when we visited this time. The waiter did not come to take our orders until we flagged him down. He came by very few times to check on us, and the restaurant was nearly empty. A lady from another table walked up to him and complained because he hadn't come by with refills in a long time. When he brought us our checks, there were no pens. The primary issue was when I asked him if I could order the Kaeespätzle ($18 pre-tax) and add a small side of protein as it didn't come with any meat. He told me that I could order chicken, and he would go ask the manager for the total price. He returned, pointed at the chicken salad item on the menu, and said the total would be $24, as that was the price of the chicken salad. I said that was fine. I was given a plate of chicken in addition to my entree. Later when we got the bill, we saw that he had charged $18 for the Kaeespätzle and $24 for the chicken, pre-tax. I told him that this wasn't what we understood, and he simply replied that we could choose to not tip him, and that would cover the cost. This was a very unprofessional remark. I didn't want to argue, so I paid the full price, and I did tip him because I still felt obligated to. Foregoing a tip would evidently not cover the cost of the additional dish I was charged for. Unfortunately, the food was also disappointing, as the chicken tasted very dry and chewy, and the Kaeespätzle didn't have an enjoyable taste. I was encouraged by my friend's family to email management, so I have emailed them and am awaiting a response. Edit: I emailed their email they have listed on their website, and it bounced back. I also messaged their Facebook page, and it says they read my message. Now their profile isn't showing up, so they either deleted it or blocked me. I have also tried calling, and no one answered the phone. read more

After hearing about Kafe Leopold'd Viennese cuisine for a number of years, I'm so happy I was able to try it for the first tip. We didn't book in advance when we went on Sunday but the very kind and friendly staff were able to seat us very quickly. The seat was outside the main seating area in the alley itself which was honestly preferable given how lively the outdoor patio and indoor sections are. I started with the latte which turned out to be strong and tasty. We wanted to try dishes which couldn't be found at a traditional brunch restaurant, but Kafe Leopold definitely has those traditional brunch items alongside their special Austrian/German dishes. We ordered the Olive tart which looked like it contained too many olives when it first came out but turned out to be simply excellent. The ratio of olive to actual tart was perfect and the little salad that came with it was the ideal contrast. For a main dish, we ordered the veal schnitzel and thoroughly enjoyed it! One thing to note is that the schnitzel doesn't just come with mustard; it is served on top of mustard. The mustard was slightly overpowering; if I were to order this again, I'd ask for the mustard on the side. Time became of the essence owing to the mustard as well; the crust/coating was in danger of getting soggy if we didn't eat it fast. The arugula it was served with was very nice; I appreciated that each of their savory dishes seemed to be served with a vegetable of some kind of brightness and contrast. We rounded out the meal with French fries; these were good but very akin to what McDonald's offers, only slightly better. They definitely satisfied a craving, but they were perhaps not the best fries I've ever had. I am definitely looking forward to a return visit to Kafe Leopold before summer is over! read more

Typically you don't need a reservation, but if you plan on going during the weekend I'd recommend doing so. The menu is mainly European fare with delicious pastries, salads and schnitzels. Hard to say who ate more - us or the mosquitoes. Although the outside is pleasant in Cady Alley - we had over 25 bites between 2 people. The pumpernickel bread was nice. The poached eggs came in a jar which was pretty inconvenient considering most people pop it over the toast. Even the salt and red pepper were separated. The more I write the more I realize it was like they brought me the ingredients on a plate. The omelette was also deconstructed oddly (the vegetables weren't cooked into the egg). Overall the dishes were okay. My iced latte was meh - would rather have gone elsewhere. Really nothing to right home about or send to the family group chat. Who would've thought in a back alley in Georgetown, you would find an Austrian restaurant that served German/Austrian fusion dishes at reasonable prices? I had the schnitzel dish with arugula salad and I substituted fingerling potatoes for the potato salad. The arugula salad served on top of the schnitzel was overpowering and bitter, but when paired with a bite of the schnitzel, evened out the grease flavor from the fried entrée. The fingerling potatoes were perfectly cooked. Probably the best I've ever had in my life. I would go back and eat at this joint on any day of the week and twice on Sunday just for the fingerling potatoes again. read more

I guess it's over for my love affair with Kate Leopold. The last time I was here was pre pandemic, and I was really excited that they survived those dark times! I asked to go here with my parents for brunch today and, while I might come back to retry some of the desserts, I would say that the food left a lot to be desired as did the service (though our actual waiter was lovely!) We came at 10am, and went to check in. There were three people at the check in desk, but they couldn't quite figure out who was in charge and where to seat us. After a few minutes of trying to figure things out, we were sat outside under an umbrella. My mom had a salad, which she contends was good, and my dad had the spatzle breakfast, which seemed far too heavy and saucy. I decided to order the two soft boiled eggs with bread and a raisin danish, so I could have room for dessert. The danish had exactly 6 raisins and way too much cinnamon for my taste. The eggs were a disaster. First of all, they were hot to the touch and came in their shell, so that was a fun process of trying to take the shells off while not burning myself. But the real disappointment was that they were far from soft boiled. I basically ended up peeling the full shell off and putting them on the (stale) bread with some salt. I'm sorry, but when a kitchen can't manage to soft boil an egg, it's pretty disappointing. I also watched a couple next to us, cut into their poached eggs, which were pretty solidly overcooked. My coffee was fine, but the Esterhazy dessert was far too sweet. Either my taste has changed, or it just wasn't great today. I would come back and try some other desserts, but this is definitely off my loves list! Also, as far as service goes, again, while our actual waiter was perfectly nice, and he's the reason this place got more than one star quite simply... the front door staff were less than friendly. There was, what I assume was a general manager, who stopped by our table while we were waiting on dessert and interrupted our conversation (rather unexpectedly) to ask if we were waiting on our check, followed by the front door guy coming over and deconstructing our umbrella and telling us matter of factly, that the sun wouldn't affect us for a while. It was all just disruptive and inconsiderate, which, on top of the overcooked eggs, left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

The interior of the Austrian café is modern and sleek with the floor-to-ceiling windows allowing plenty of light to come in. I came here one night for dinner with my sister and friend. We shared some calamari. My sister had the rostbraten vom angusrind (Angus skirt steak). My friend had the miesmuscheln (mussels). I had the schnitzel. The food was good. However, I never got the potato salad that came with the schnitzel so it was an incomplete meal due to the missing starch component. When I asked our server about it, he said that they had ran out and that he could substitute it with fries instead. It would have been nice to have been told before ordering or getting my food as I would have chosen another entrée instead. I declined the fries as there was enough on the table already from what came with the mussels and steak. For dessert, we shared the Esterhazy, fruit tart, and some macarons. The desserts were beautiful, but they are a tad too sweet for my preference. Kafe Leopold nailed it on the ambiance, but the food and service does not hit the 5-star mark. Their savory food is decent, but you have to have a really sweet tooth for their desserts, especially the Esterhazy. Though our server was super friendly and personable, the service was a little slow and not very proactive.
