I'm giving The Ambassador a full-hearted 4 stars. I like it...I'll go back. But a 5? I'm stingy with those. We stopped at the Ambassador for a late lunch...pizza, nachos grande, broccoli cheddar soup. The pizza was our standard sausage and pepperoni; it received high ratings from the hubs and son. PHENOMENAL! AMAZING! The pizza itself earns 5 stars. (Note: I've had the popular tostada pizza before...not that great. Don't tell my neighbor I said this.) The nachos grande were the perfect mixture of ground beef and sloppy toppings (I mean that in a good way). They're a 3 star...a good-hit-the-spot-in-a-junk-food-kinda-way nacho. No free-range chicken, farm-to-table veg happening here, but sometimes you want the big mess of sloppy (in the good way) nachos. These hit the spot. One thing...I *hate* iceberg lettuce...the nachos are loaded with it. So now, back to the tostada pizza. ORDER THE NACHOS INSTEAD. There, I said it. The soup, skip the calories here, invest the in a few more beers. The soup was below average. Great beer selection...not a fan of the fishbowls (kool-aid + liquor), but they are iconic. Bouncing around all over the UP over the Fourth of July when every place was slammed, we popped into Ambassador on a lark and couldn't have been happier for it. The atmosphere is charming, the drinks are an experience, the food is solid- and its all at a pretty dang reasonable price point. Honestly though, the service took the cake. Attentive, but not overly so, generous with recommendations when asked, happy to substitute and special order and a quick turn around on the Greek Pizza we'd modified. When I looked for best restaurants to try in Houghton, MI, this one showed up a few times. They are known for their pizzas, and I happened to be craving pizza on this particular day so we gave it a shot. They are supposed to be known for the tostada pizza, but based on previous reviews it's a hit or miss item so we made do without it. But what we did end up getting was a taco salad to get an idea of the flavor profile since Tex mex was clearly a theme at this restaurant/bar. In addition to that we also asked for a small vegetarian pizza to share. I have to say I'm a little conflicted. We did enjoy both the menu items we ordered, but I really didn't understand why this restaurant was recommended so highly. The pizza tasted like something I could have bought at a frozen food aisle at Kroger and the taco salad was okay (the seasoning was great though admittedly). Maybe this place is popular with the college students around here on a late night bar crawl, but as a stand alone restaurant it's kinda overrated. read more

My husband and I ate at this restaurant recently while vacationing in the upper peninsula of Michigan. What really impressed me about this restaurant (during the Covid-19 pandemic) was that they made it clear that masks were required, and they followed thru with the sign that they had displayed out front. The tables inside were clearly marked so that you knew where to sit to maintain the social distancing measurements, and you seated yourself. I got an 8" Italian submarine sandwich and my husband got their Yodeler. We did not get any sides as they didn't have fries or chips or anything of the like........not that we needed any, the sandwiches were enough. I enjoyed my sandwich but I would have liked it more had it been made with mayo instead of salad dressing, I'm not a big fan of salad dressing. I asked the waitress for mayo instead of salad dressing (salad dressing was in the description) and she assured me that regardless of what was on the menu it was made with mayo. She was wrong. It was still good though, but I probably wouldn't order it again. My husband enjoyed his sandwich too. This place offers a bunch of different kinds of sandwiches that I would like to try if we are ever in the area again. Service was great! read more

A Houghton landmark for most MTU grads, Ambassador seems to never change. Walking in the other night after not visiting for a couple of years, I was immediately transported back in time to my college days which definitely sets the tone for a good night. I don't believe the fishbowl menu has changed since then, but my tastes have and it was fun to try something different from what I remember on previous visits! Our appetizers were the loaded potato skins - complete with sour cream WITH chives (awesome way to take it up a notch). It's never a bad idea to try the pizza - I will say I have more fondness for the memory of tostada pizza than I do for the actual taste, but only because it feels a little heavy on the sweet taco sauce and that's rectified easily enough! I just never remember to request it on the side. I love their beef raviolis the most. The sauce is tangy and has depth and I wouldn't hesitate to try some of the other pasta offerings. Interestingly I was recently in an older building/restaurant in Madison where I live and I felt like it was a bit dingy/smelly and needed a good cleaning. This building and restaurant is easily as old and was spotless. I believe the owners take a lot of pride in their business. If you are visiting from out of town, look no further. read more

We had a friendly waiter, I enjoy the murals every time that I show up, they have a long history in the Copper country and date back to Roosevelts time. The pizza isn't as good as it used to be, hopefully they can modify the recipe or find the old one, but it's a great place to meet friends, and hang out as it always was. read more

We used to love Ambo pizza and atmosphere but things have changed. Waitstaff was very inattentive, wings were soggy and tasted old, pizza was overpriced. I got GF crust which is a $5 up charge on $15 pizza. Got the veggie pizza which I asked for light cheese and extra sauce (which they also charged extra for) there was literally no cheese and a gross amount of sauce and all the veggies were raw. (Onions, carrots, zucchini, tomatoes, and broccoli) two thumbs down for that one. The wings were just gross. Don't go for a mixed drink because that will be light alcohol as well...not sure we will be back after 40 years of supporting the Ambo! read more

Everyone I know loves the fishbowls from the ambassador and for a good reason, they're delicious. My favorite is the sweet tart. The portion, price, and taste leave nothing to be desired. The pizza sandwiches and salads are also delicious. If you only come here once try the lobster pizza it is so unique yet somehow they've perfected it with the perfect balance of sweet lobster and crispy pizza crust. I really like the Greek salad, Greek pizza, BLT pizza, and club sandwich too. I love eating here. Although it is almost always very busy so it's important to plan on being okay with waiting for a bit but it's worth it (I like to put my name in then have a drink down the street to speed up the wait). One really cool part about the restaurant is the antique original paintings on the walls and ceiling along with the cool green glass fixtures. It really adds something to the experience. read more

My group arrived here at 5:15 and were told we would be seated in the next 45 minutes... it took an hour and twenty minutes to be seated and at 7:00 we had not even received our drinks. They seated everyone behind us before us and we're not remotely accommodating, we offered to split up our group or squeeze together and they would not, despite the fact that may of the larger tables only had two people seated there!! We eat here at least once a trip. The pizza is a bit different, but if you think about it as a round flatbread it is good. My kids loved the garlic toast, but weren't too into the pizza. Adults had a garlic chicken pizza that was good. There are a lot of tasty beers on tap and some fishbowl options as well. The decor and wall images are entertaining. We had- what we hope- is an unusual experience. I want to start by saying that the staff were all friendly. The menu is creative. Ironically, we ordered boring food that day. They have an extensive drink menu with numerous options for specialty craft beers and wines. Many Michigan made options. We ordered the taco salad along with a single hard shell taco, and a Caesar salad with herbed chicken. The portion sizes are very generous!!! I also had a Pickaxe ale from a local brewery- definitely recommend! Blonde ale very light and smooth. We also ordered a chicken quesadilla flatbread pizza to go. We thoroughly enjoyed the pizza cold over a couple days. I would give 5stars but we had an unfortunate experience. With all patients and understanding for the current environment of staffing limitations- the kitchen was apparently a little short staffed this day- though there were at least 5-6 people in the kitchen at all times. We were seated directly in eye sight of the kitchen. Our salads took over an hour to come to our table. My chicken was warm- not hot. The hard shell taco was soggy. The pizza was warm- not hot. Not a deal breaker since we planned to eat it later anyway- but they didn't know that. This suggests that our food was sitting out long before we received it. Our waitress- although polite with a sweet demeanor, largely ignored us for the duration of our visit. Once she brought us our first drinks she disappeared for over 20 mins- no one checked on us -nor let us know they were running behind. We tried to get her attention- but she never looked in our direction. At one point I saw her check her phone in the corner - giggle and walk off. I wouldn't care except she was ignoring us. She finally brought our food after we had been seated for an hour, we requested a second drink for each of us. We watched her at the drink station for 10 mins before she brought them back. She never came back to ask if everything was good or if we needed anything else. When we finished our dinner salads I cleaned up the plates and placed them at the corner of our table. It was 10 more mins before my husband finally got up to speak with the manager. It was the manager who brought our bill and the no longer hot pizza to go, cleared our plates. He was apologetic but With all the other tables around us Seated after us - with different wait staff - Receiving their food before us It's hard to believe that it was a kitchen staff issue. Thankfully the food was good so I'm apt to be more generous with my rating. My suggestion: go for lunch or an early for dinner - do not go during the dinner rush. I want to love this place, I really do. I fully plan to return the next time I'm in the area. But my visit left a bit to be desired. The building is old and very cool. We got to sit in a booth to the side of the door that's in its own little nook, which was awesome. Our waiter was great. The drinks steal the show here for sure. The fishbowls are sort of an interesting size- too big for one person but not big enough for two, IMO. But they are CHEAP. SO cheap for the size and for how good they taste! I like that you get a basket of garlic bread for the table instead of like rolls or something. It was good but not great garlic bread. I got wings and this turned out to be a bad call. When they were brought out to me they were served on a plate that was too hot to touch, but the wings themselves were ice cold, which was... disorienting. I had to send them back, and the waiter came back to let me know that they were frozen and he told them what temperature they had to cook them to. This was odd, because I figured the cooks should already know how to cook the items on the menu and not need directions from the waiter, lol. He came back a few more times to let me know they were still cooking, during which time my boyfriend finished his meal. Finally, I got my wings. They were fine but definitely nothing special. I'm guessing the ranch is made in-house though; it was very good. I did get the wings for free since I had to just sit there and watch my boyfriend eat, then he had to sit and watch me eat lol. That ranch though! This place has yet to disappoint. We used to always be about the pizza but lately we are loving the sandwiches. The food is always great and full of flavor. The 16" Italian Sub is so fresh and a great dish to share! The meatball sub quickly became a new favorite. They also have a pretty fun drink menu. If you are a ranch fan, there's is the BEST. Incredible history - supposedly a famous gun fight took place at the bar where fur traders overthrew federal officers and imposed an Ambassador for the town until order could be restored.
