I put 4 stars because I have been involved with this restaurant for 25+ years - doing business dinners- raising my family eating there - and enjoying take out When no one knew in particular for whom the order was for - but I picked it up - not an outside service I have read some critiques on this site. Some are from people who might want to appear to be food critics I am not - just a returning customer for 30 yrs I have traveled in Europe in 6 countries, Great Britain and the US extensively. I confess I have never been to any part of China. So if the critics have been there - oh well The Sweet and Sour soup is the best I have eaten anywhere in the world - add hot oil The "Special Salad " is something I have never had anywhere in the world and all Personal friends and business associates and clients rave about it As for entrees - we have NEVER been disappointed And generous servings to take home But the Side of Garlic Green Beans is incredible ----Again a dish nowhere but Ambassador So hats off to Wendy the owner She created a neighborhood family restaurant years ago And some people are ignorant in my opinion to know what they are experiencing. Two words... Egg Rolls! Seriously though, my coworker and I got Ambassador delivered to our office for lunch. I got the Szechuan Shredded Chicken lunch special (comes with fried rice and the most amazing, giant egg roll). She got the Curry Chicken. We were both impressed! Each meal came out to around 9 dollars with tax, delivery was free and fast. When I'm feeling too lazy to leave for lunch, I'm definitely going to order from Ambassador again :). read more

I remember reading some good reviews about this place a while back, so when my bf said I could eat Chinese food for lent this Friday, I was like, "Score!" So we ordered some eggrolls, szechuan cold noodles with chicken, orange beef, and walnut shrimp. Eggrolls as a previous yelper mentioned...just pass on those. It was eggrolls on steroid filled with nothing but cabbage. I mainly scraped out the cabbage and just started eating the dough with the sweet and sour sauce. Next was the Szechuan noodles...when it came out, I thought...this looks like it's going to be a really bland dish. It just looked like some regular linguine noodles. Upon eating it, it tasted sort of like the Vietnamese fish sauce (dipping sauce)...sweet but a little sour. Good. But we asked for some chili paste and the ginger chili paste and mixed it all in there. It was so spicy but so good! Try it! Orange beef is always a hit or miss for me. My bf enjoyed it because every piece was crunchy...but I think it was a little too crunchy...kinda like eating pig skin. I like mine a little fried. But when we heated it up the next day to eat, it didn't taste too bad. Walnut shrimp...didn't see it on the menu but we asked them and they had it. It wasn't the typical slathered in mayonnaise...but definitely was good if not better. It's sweet and devine. The walnuts were sugar coated so perfectly. If you have a sweet tooth and really love this dish...order it. Ambience is clean and a little more upscale than the typical hole in the wall place. The owner was very sweet, came out and talked to us several times, and even offered to help us pick out some dishes the next time we came. read more

We ordered delivery tonight (no delivery fee & online ordering). Delivery came on time as promised. Egg rolls were amazing according to my husband (2 for $2.50). They were huge! I had the fried wontons which were fabulous. Crunchy and lots of cream cheese. ($4.50). My husband had beef in oyster sauce which we requested spicy but it wasn't. He thought it was a little heavy on the veggies. I had curry beef. Very tasted. We will order from here again! read more

Hubs and I enjoyed our meal from the Ambassador lunch menu. You select a cup of soup, steamed or fried rice, egg roll or crab puff and an entree item for around 9.00 per plate. We both ordered cup of won ton soup which we found to be good, 2 won tons each. Hubs was happy there were no peas in the soup. I personally like peas in mine, I ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan and Hubs ordered lemon chicken. Both were excellent flavor, no MSG that we detected. was very Moo Goo had loads of Chinese veg and white meat chicken. I ordered the fried rice but will try steamed next trip. Egg rolls are delish. Tried a few pieces of Hubs lemon chicken and loved it and the sauce. It reminds me of a popular dish in Calgary Canada called Almond Chicken Soo Gai, I will ask the chef if he could recreate it for me. They do give you a lot of food, so you can warm up for later. My husband has been eating here since he was a child. So of course he familiarized me with this restaurant. The food is absolutely amazing. The egg rolls are massive and the entrees are always a healthy portion. The food tastes like home style Szechuan. You can taste the authenticity. It truly is amazing and we come here every time we are in town. The staff have always been nice and prompt with our food. Would definitely recommend this place! read more

I've driven past this joint at least 100 times on my way to the plethora of Asian joints down Richmond. We stopped here for lunch last week, and I've got to admit, I don't regret not stopping all those times before. The food was very average, with that Americanized selection we've all come to know and love. There really wasn't anything that I can say stood out about Ambassador. My colleague got the vegetable manchurian, and that was quite good. Very gingery and fresh. I had the Szechuan stripped pork, which was more water chestnuts than meat. I'll probably try this place one more time, if only to get the manchurian dish and because it's so close. Next time I'll get delivery perhaps. read more

This established Houston restaurant is convenient to the Uptown District and we've enjoyed both dining in and ordering out regularly over the last three years since we moved here. It took a while for us to find a Chinese restaurant we liked and have been pleased with Ambassador. So after 11 years I'm finally taking the time out to say how I love this place! It's a family feel from the moment you walk in. The food is Fresh and hot 99% of the time and the customer service is exceptional. I personally love the vegetable egg rolls! I've never been to a place that has a delicious gigantic egg roll so delish! The tofu dishes are a crowd pleaser for my fam! Tonight my husband and I went to Ambassador for the first time in forever! We live far from the restaurant but I grew up eating there. From the moment I walked in I felt like I was home! Mrs. Wendy and Sally remembered me even though it's been at least 5 yrs since I've been back! The food was superb! Their egg rolls are second to none! We live in Conroe and not one restaurant makes egg rolls like Ambassador! I was taken back to my childhood with all the amazing food and service! I hope I can make more trips soon! read more

I was so excited to try this place! I arrived at the time Google stated the restaurant opened. The doors were locked, but I could see that staff was inside. I called the restaurant and asked what time they were going to open. The young lady Who answered the phone replied, "Ummmm maybe in 30 minutes?" "Ummm maybe?" Was a huge red flag. I stayed in the parking lot until they open and ordered food. The food was excellent! The next time I went back I ordered pan fried noodles. When I arrived home I realize there wasn't a single fried noodle in the box. In fact, not only were the noodles all wet, but they were mushy. I couldn't eat my food, I tossed it. I ordered to go and the two women at front who helped with my order were friendly and the service was fast I had the mixed vegetable lunch special. The egg roll was large, greasy, and bland. The vegetables were bizarre. While the broccoli and celery seemed to come from fresh produce, the mushrooms, baby corn and bamboo shoots clearly came from a can ---- very, very old cans. The baby corn tasted like cardboard, something I never experienced before from a baby corn. The sauce was extremely bland, two packets of soy sauce and large squirt of Sriracha sauce couldn't fix. I ordered General Tso's chicken, pork fried rice, and a couple of egg rolls. *big sigh* I would have done better just throwing $23 out of my car window. The chicken is mushy and bland... Based on the sign of the restaurant hanging over Richmond street I thought this would be an authentic Chinese restaurant. Upon first entering the restaurant the ambiance reinforced my impression. But upon my first interaction with the waiter and the menu I was greatly disappointed. I guess this restaurant is actually based as if it is for ambassadors to China who would like the idea of eating Chinese food but not really authentic Chinese food. First I looked for tea on the menu and didn't find any! I asked the waiter and he looked at me clueless. I ordered the vegetable and shrimp spring rolls which are huge. They tasted pretty good but I didn't taste much shrimp in them. I ordered curry chicken for the entree. The menu said it would be spicy but it was not spicy at all. I didn't like the taste at all and I do not have a picky sense of taste. My coming in expectations worsened my experience. There's Chinese characters on the outdoor sign but none in the menu. Just ordered from Ambassador an hour ago and they delivered pretty promptly. They gave notice they were going to be a little late, despite the fact that I didn't feel they were and the delivery fellow was pretty apologetic when he showed up to my door. I ordered the Moo Goo Gai Pan, Beef Lo Mein and Egg Drop Soup and they were all pretty tasty. The only thing stopping me from putting in 5 stars is the fact that they brought me white rice when I ordered (and paid the extra $1) for brown rice. Since it's a check box, I assume they missed it, so I'll just make a point to writing it in the details next time. It's definitely going to become my go-to chinese delivery place though! read more

Been getting take out from Ambassador for years. Usually the food is excellent, but I got to tell you tonight's meal was poor at best. The Moo Shu Shrimp was over-cooked and dry, and the combination fried rice was missing some of the ingredients that we've come to expect. I would recommend this place to anyone. I am usually very picky from where I eat Chinese food from. This restaurant has the best shrimp egg rolls they are very good and are not expensive for the size they come in. Their food is amazing and they have great customer service. Out of all of my reviews that I constantly write, I can't believe I haven't written one for Ambassador!!! This is my boyfriend and I's favorite Chinese restaurant in the Galleria/Uptown area. It is phenomenal and doesn't make the health sanction list (our old go-to spot is on it every time). The egg rolls are HUGE and very flavorful. You get two at a time. The crab wontons are creamy and delicious and the honey walnut shrimp is out of this world. We usually get delivery which can take a good hour or so, but it is completely worth it! Give this place a try. We definitely order weekly. read more

We've never had a bad experience here. Always seated immediately - they are usually not crowded. They have offer a wide variety of menu options. I like try something different every time we eat there. I have yet to be disappointed. My only complaint is that they are closed on Sundays. But, everyone needs a day off. read more

i hardly eat out solo.....but when it comes to Ambassador chinese, i am always solo and i do not mind at all. i have gone during the lunch hour. my coworkers either do not eat anything that ends in "ese" or they are on a diet and cannot eat out. so i find myself going to Ambassador alone.....which may seem depressing at first, but when the deliciously hot and tasty food comes out....you forget about your surroundings because you are ready to dive into that plate of rice and saucy stir fry! the restaurant is located inside the loop, a few doors down from Ragin Cajun on Richmond. It is in a rinky dinky type of building, so rent doesn't seem expensive, which explains the cheap menu prices for an innerloop restaurant. Me likey the pace! read more

Disclaimer: This is only for the location at Rice University in the Student Center. I ordered rice and a "jumbo" eggroll for $3. The rice was hard and dry (how can a Chinese restaurant not execute white rice correctly??) and the jumbo eggroll turned out to be full of cabbage, no meat and SUPER soggy and greasy! it was terrible. The worst eggroll and rice I've probably ever eaten. I feel bad that Rice students and staff do not have a better Chinese food option on campus when there are SO many good Chinese restaurants in Houston. I felt like that was $3 wasted that I'll never get back. I really hope they make better quality food or that Rice can get a better vendor. read more

The yellow sign out in front may throw you for a loop and may get you thinking, "Do I really want to try this place?" Well the answer is YES! My friend and I were greeted and seated as soon as we walked in. The service was definitely a plus at this place. Everyone had a smile and was very friendly. As I looked over the menu, there were so many items that I wanted to try but with just two people at the table, I didn't want to over order as well. We ordered the steamed pork dumplings to start the meal. For the entrees we chose sesame chicken, Mongolian beef and Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. The dumplings were steamed perfectly and tasted oh so good. With a little bit of chili oil added to the sauce to give a bit of kick, it definitely hit the spot. Soon enough the rest of our food came out and filled up the table. It definitely looked a lot of food for two people and the servers just smiled and commented, "hungry, enjoy." That is exactly what we did. The Mongolian beef was definitely my favorite between the two meat dishes. I'm just not a big fan of sesame chicken, but it was too good to say no. The Chinese broccoli was OK. I just wished the oyster sauce was thicker and there was more of it. I guess I could've asked for more sauce, but at that time I didn't think of it. A co-worker picked up lunch for us here. We both got the egg drop soup which I loved. But I my review is inspired by the egg rolls. These are huge and very tasty. When my co-worker took them out of the bag I couldn't believe how big they were. I got the vegetable egg rolls and I couldn't eat them fast enough. I've never seen egg rolls this hardy. Ordered delivery from this place and it was pretty underwhelming. The Cantonese noodles had good texture but no flavor . Same with the chicken and broccoli. Unfortunately it's the kind of meal that leaves you wishing you had ordered from somewhere else. On the upside the service, even calling in and placing a to go , is really nice and professional.
