Vietnam Coast is one of those places I can't believe I went so long without trying! I've lived in Houston my entire life, but I never came here until I joined Reiki Circle at Unity Houston in 2017. They meet for lunch afterward, and now it's become one of my absolute favorite spots. It's wonderful for groups of any size, the staff is always attentive and friendly, and in all the years I've been coming here, I've never had a bad experience. Everyone I bring ends up loving it, too. What's funny is my friend Sal was in town from Chicago this weekend and had actually lived in Houston for 25 years himself. He used to come to nearby spots like Garson and Antonio's Flying Pizza all the time but always turned his nose up at Vietnam Coast because of the outside appearance. Last night he finally came in and absolutely loved it. I almost always start with the Vietnamese egg rolls, which are deep fried and served with lettuce, cucumber, cilantro, carrots, fish sauce, and spicy red sauce. You wrap the egg roll in the lettuce and customize it however you want. They're fantastic. I also love the Vietnam Coast Beef entrée itself, which comes out in a little boat with beef, jalapeños, onions, green onions, and rice. But last night I ordered my favorite dish: the Vietnamese beef fajitas. They are SO good! You build your own wraps using rice paper with lemongrass beef, carrots, pineapple, bean sprouts, cilantro, noodles, fried onions, fish sauce, and whatever extras you want. I always add fresh jalapeños. My only annoyance--and it's minor--is that sometimes they bring lukewarm water for softening the rice paper. If the water isn't hot enough, it takes forever for the wrappers to soften, so definitely ask for hot water if needed. It makes a huge difference. I also love their Thai tea with boba. Considering the quality and amount of food, it's still very reasonably priced even with inflation. Two people with Vietnamese egg rolls, the Vietnam Coast beef entrée, and Vietnamese beef fajitas, two beers, and a Thai tea with boba came out to just under $60. Additionally, the restrooms are always clean, there's always a good crowd, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. One more positive thing that did unexpectedly come out of the afternoon yesterday: the back parking lot has a curb filled with roses and purple heart plants, and they must have cut the purple heart plants back, but just left the cuttings all over the surrounding parking spaces and on the curb itself instead of discarding them. I have an incredibly brown thumb, but these plants are incredibly easy to propagate and bloom the prettiest pink flowers. I ended up leaving with an armful of free propagates for my garden, which had bloomed by morning even while still in a grocery bag. Those cuttings honestly may have been the highlight of our visit to Vietnam Coast this weekend. . This place is absolutely worth visiting. read more

My family and I love this place and always stop by whenever we're nearby. The ambiance is great -- it's a nice-sized restaurant, and the bathrooms are always clean. The food is consistently amazing, and we usually order the bò lúc lắc, which never disappoints. This time I tried the orange chicken. It was really good at first, but as I kept eating, it started to taste more and more sour, so I probably wouldn't order it again. Still, sometimes you try something new and it's just not for you. Overall though, the bò lúc lắc is always super good and remains my go-to. The staff are always sweet and caring as well. Great place! read more

There was a time when Vietnam Coast was renowned for its unique take on Vietnamese-inspired cuisine. With over four decades in business -- and more than 30 years at its current Hillcroft location -- it was a pioneer in the area, not only as a women-owned establishment but also for producing imaginative dishes such as Vietnamese fajitas, which expanded the local community's perception of the cuisine. Lately, it feels like the restaurant has seen better days. My last two visits were quieter than expected and my Viet group and I encountered some language issues with the staff (#1), which seem to be catering to the local Spanish-speaking community which has become prominent in the neighborhood. The food has also shifted to better suit the neighborhood's evolving tastes. (#2) Yet the decor is still as charming as ever. The large murals depicting the tranquil landscapes of Vietnam and the lush rice fields of the Mekong Delta creates a colorful and peaceful atmosphere (#3). The hanging lanterns create a more intimate vibe at night and the condiment station are a nice touch. Even the wall portraits of ao dai clad women and birds in cages feels extra in the best decor-kind of way. The dedicated parking lot is also a nice perk, especially when there are spaces out front and back. While the baby chairs being left in the bathroom feels super random, it's not all that different than other divey Viet spots where the toilets are located next to the cleaning supplies. There is something about the picture menus that feels reminiscent of American Chinese-takeout spots in NYC with the dated faux-Asian font, out of of focus photos, and highlighted dishes that include the sweet and sour chicken, pepper steak, kung pow chicken, and mapo tofu. To be fair, I couldn't bring myself to try any of it. However, the things of which I did order did not pan out as I had hoped. The crawfish fried rice was unique, but was overly bland. The stir fried noodles and fried wontons were expectedly underwhelming, and the cha gio egg rolls were a bit too tough for my liking. The biggest offenders were the chicken and beef ball pho, which were admittedly worst I've had. Everything was really off, from the broth to the portions, that my group and I had to really think about what we were eating. Despite some misses from these experiences, I still wonder if there was something that my group and I missed. While the food didn't hit the way that we wanted, we understand the service, ambiance (#4), and price point make this a destination for many. Or perhaps, it's simply for a different audience? __________ (#1) A first for me: ordering Vietnamese food in Spanish. (#2) Not quite gringo'fied, but certainly getting there. All right, I love PHO ! So I'm always on the hunt the best pho places there is in Houston! I went here for my friends's birthday. I know it's not a birthday spot, but we both love this type of food so we went here and it was amazing. I didn't get a chance to try more things on the menu, but I will definitely be back again to add an additional review of other items but to a test to what I did have it was good 8/10. The broth was really good. The only thing that was questionable was the chicken was a little tough. Like it was overcooked. So much fun exploring new restaurants. This is one of my friend's favorites. Started with the spring rolls. Vermicelli, bean sprouts, lettuce and grilled chicken wrapped up in rice paper served with a peanut sauce. Love the dipping sauce. You might need an extra one. The Thai soup with chicken, tomatoes, and scallions in a spicy lemongrass broth is so warm and soothing. Get a cup or a bowl. The Vietnamese Salad was so fresh and healthy. Cilantro, carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, tomatoes and bean sprouts topped with grilled lemongrass chicken. Yummy. Finish the meal with flan. Served in an ice cream dish. So light and delicious. A bargain at $2. The restaurant is so cute. Love the murals on the walls. Reminded me of an amazing trip where we went kayaking in Ha Long Bay. So magical. We met our son and two grandbabies for lunch and the food was amazing. This place came highly recommended by a friend and it's been around for over 30 years. The service was friendly and informative. The bowl of wonton noodle soup was tasty and we have enough left over our evening meal. The General Tso's chicken was very good. The fried dumplings really hit the spot. Intro: After watching a soccer match with a friend at a bar close by, he recommended that we check out Vietnam Coast for lunch. He's a regular here and praised the restaurant as his favorite spot for Vietnamese food. I was sold. Located in The Galleria area, we made our way over and parked in their lot. Ambiance (2.5/5): Vietnam Coast isn't the most aesthetically pleasing of restaurants. It fits the bill as more of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Which has never been a problem for me. If the food delivers, that's all I care about. Service (4/5): With my buddy being a regular, we got the VIP treatment. I'll have to return solo to better gauge the service. Drinks (4/5): Da chanh (homemade Vietnamese lemonade) is my go-to at Vietnamese restaurants. Could have been a little more sweet for my taste, a tad bitter, but solid. Food (4/5): My buddy got the crawfish fried rice and I tried a bite. It was delicious and quite the portion. I'll have to try it for myself the next time I return. I went with the loaded wonton soup which is like the wonton soup you get at Chinese restaurants on steroids. Instead of a cup or a bowl, it's as much broth as if you were ordering pho. That means more dumplings. And other goodies here too including shrimp. I added an egg for an extra charge. A filling soup. Next time around, I'll go with more of a traditional Vietnamese dish. The food here was really good and I would definitely attend this restaurant again. The portions were very plentiful and flavorful. I had the Vietnamese eggrolls and the wonton soup. The wonton soup was spectacular and very delicious. The broth really hit the spot and reminded me of one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants that closed many years ago. I ordered a vermicelli bowl to-go. It came with Vietnamese egg-rolls, grilled pork, veggies, and fish sauce. There was so much food that I was able to eat lunch for two days. The only reason I gave this restaurant four stars is due to the fact they don't have fish balls to add to a bowl of Pho. Had a Thai tea to wash it down. By the end of the meal I was very full. This place was very cute and cozy interior. The service was nice and quick too. The pho and wings were bland. The pho noodles were over boiled so it was too soft and took away from the pho flavor too. They were also very skimpy with the meat as you can see in the photo. It's Monday! Nah, it's Wednesday. So excited to get our regular take away, but so desperately miss our normal experience of arriving, ordering our food, and then talking with everyone while enjoying our beverages and waiting for our take away. Called at 8:30PM to check on hours. The person who answered handed the phone to "her." She paused then said "9:15. What time can you be here?" If you close at 9:15, how does my arrival time factor in?" My husband and I have both worked in the Service Industry. We were both taught a kitchen is open until the restaurant is closed. You can clean early at the risk of having to dirty it up before close. Our order takes ten minutes from request to bagged. Two persons just arrived at 9:23 and were met at the door being told the kitchen was closed. 9:26...lights out. I love this place, I do. I love the staff, the Owner and her Sisters. I went here tonight and ordered the Spicy Crawfish Fried Rice. It was very delicious with a lot of crawfish pieces and fresh, well seasoned fried rice. It was made just right and had a lot of flavors in it without being too salty. I could really taste the rice. However, when I walked in my initial waiter wasn't friendly or attentive. He never came back, didn't refill my iced tea and didn't check back even once after bringing my meal order to my table. The place was not even busy at all tonight when I arrived, which made this much more unacceptable. I find it hard to give 1 or 2 stars to any Vietnamese restaurant because Vietnamese cuisine is definitely among the top 5 of all cuisines I love and keep returning to. That said, Vietnam Coast, in my opinion, does not get anywhere close to the high quality of the old Vietnam Restaurant which disappeared from Main Street many years ago or, for that matter, Van Loc. Based on the fact Vietnam Coast has been around since 1981 and the structure has been a familiar sight for years, I mistakenly thought it would be reminiscent of some of the older Vietnamese restaurants which have gone out of business. The cha gio in my order was cold and practically flavorless. That was a shame because cha gio is honestly one of those very simple items that is hard to get wrong. As for the house special fried rice, the chicken was inedible and nothing but gristle. The shrimp were also too tiny. It was just a fail. I expected better. read more

The worst pho, spring rolls and Vietnamese egg rolls I have ever had. First, the "pho"- broth was weak as could be, no option in choosing different cuts of meat, its just beef, chicken, etc.. VERY little basil was on the garnish dish. The last straw is that the meat already comes cooked in the broth, unlike any other pho place that gives you the eye of round, raw, on the side and you cook it to your liking in the broth. Next- the Vietnamese egg rolls- just greasy and do not resemble egg rolls like any other Vietnamese places. Again, just greasy. Lastly, the spring rolls- meat was not flavored at all. You know its bad when you are relying on the peanut sauce to save the spring rolls. Maybe they changed owners recently- My first and last visit was on Feb 20th, 2023. read more

I joined a friend at this spot for dinner. I used to live in the area and work as well - I have passed this place at LEAST a thousand times and never went - BOY have I been missing out!!! I like the inside, it's cozy (aka small) but it's nice. Seating is open so you choose where you want to sit. I decided to keep it simple and chose the the lemongrass chicken salad. Ladies and gentlemen - Salad never had it so good until it was done here. I normally don't get all excited to get salad again, but after this dish - I'm ALL IN. Only $7, this salad has sautéed chicken with onions and seasoning atop a collection of lettuce, cilantro, cucumber, tomato and other delish veggies. There also some dressing/sauce to it - dunno for sure, but I ate the whole bowl and damn near wanted to lick it clean. Best authentic bargain food I've had in a LONG time. WINNER!!! read more

Hubby and I came here to try their Pho for the first time. It was delicious! The broth was flavorful with red onion, green onions, beef and all the trimmings. When I come across a place that surprises me with amazing, fantastic food, I'm thrilled and want to shout it to the world! In all fairness, I did not discover Vietnam Coast solely by killer instincts. No, I was in search of good Vietnamese food, so I did what any intelligent, logical foodie would do: I asked a Vietnamese friend! "What's the best Vietnamese restaurant in town?" I asked. Without a moment's hesitation, she blurted, "Vietnam Coast." The flavors of each dish are divine. And man, this garlic beef is MIND-BLOWING. Garlic lovers, you have GOT to try this dish. I also very much appreciate that, because I asked for no rice, the kind lady, who assume is the owner, told me that she gave me extra vegetables. Wow! Without me even asking for it! When a restauranteur does something like that, unsolicited, that shows me that they care: about their food, their business, and their customers. Well done, Vietnam Coast! I don't understand how this place isn't more crowded. I can truly call this place a hidden gem. Came here on a Friday during dinner prime time as a suggestion. Small, intimate place inside. Wouldn't have ever really tried this on my own. Plenty of parking available. I was craving wonton noodle soup all week, and was surprised that they had this on the menu considering it's not a popular item at a Vietnamese restaurant. Secondly, I was a little hesitant to order it because of the fact that it's not a popular dish at a Viet restaurant, but I decided to live my life on the edge that night and give it a try. My fiance ordered the fried rice special. When the food came out, it looked pretty average, but tasted great. My wontons had a lot of flavor, the soup light and not too salty, and the noodles had a good firmness. The fried rice wasn't bad either. But the star of the night was the whole coconut jelly for dessert. The small size seems to be just a small serving, but the whole coconut came in an actual coconut. It was sooo fan-diddly-tastic! Made with real coconut juice. Great place for cheap good eats. Will definitely be back. read more
