Ambient Expert HVAC replaced two old furnaces in my apartment building located in the Rockridge area of Oakland. The units were located in the attic and the duct work was old and not well insulated because they were over 30 years old. I called several companies and Adam from Ambient Expert HVAC responded quickly and professionally. He made suggestions on the project and his price was reasonable compared to the other companies who bid on the project. Adam removed all of the old furnaces and duct work and installed new Carrier High Efficiency Heaters (95% efficient) and placed all the new insulated duct work for the cold air returns and supply lines. The 3rd party company who did the duct leak test gave complements to Adam as the ducts had a very low number and passed the Title 24 testing with plenty of margin. Adam also installed the new wi-fi enabled thermostats (Honeywell T5+ Smart Thermostat). The Building Permit process was also easy as well as the final inspection by the City of Oakland. After inspecting things, he gave us a thorough explanation of the issue and what needed to be done to fix it. The heater was pretty old and he needed to hunt down a replacement part. They installed a new furnace and adjusted the ducts. Good price on a solid Carrier high efficiency system. Set it up so we can add AC later if needed. Came back a week later after we used it for a bit and needed some adjustment. Referred then to a friend who had a broken furnace and had gotten a $1500 quote from one of the bigger companies who also gave her the hard sell on replacement. They charged her $100 for the service call even though she had them install a $10k AC unit a few months ago. Adam from Ambient went up and diagnosed the issue was t that bad and fixed it in the spot for a small fraction of their price. Can I give 6 stars?? Blazing heat for the bay area, two power shut downs from PG&E and a week's worth of migraines later, my A/C decides to act up. I had my wall heater checked a few months ago, and was told I needed to replace it. I finally contacted a few of the companies on Yelp. Adam from Ambient Expert HVAC got right back to me. He came the next day, Saturday, and gave me the option to try to repair it or replace it. For safety reasons and because it was 50 years old, I replaced it. I had a 15-year-old wall heater (direct vent wall furnace) which had a $300 repair three years ago. At that time, I was told that if the heater went out again, I would likely need a new heater. When the heater stopped, I called Ambient. They got to me in a few days; the situation was not urgent. I wanted the same heater (Empire), available on the web for about $1000; however, it is not available by any wholesaler or service companies in the Bay Area that I know of. Adam, the owner, did not test the heater because I said I wanted it replaced. He measured my heater, and checked the condition of the outside vent. He said that a Williams heater was his recommendation because Empire was not sold locally. The estimate the next day for the installation of a Williams wall furnace was $1,800. This ranged between $600 to $1,400 less than three other companies. One should not select a contractor simply by price, but I felt comfortable with Adam's demeanor and knowledge. It turned out that he did a good job installing the Williams heater. It wasn't as easy as he probably hoped, but he didn't charge more. The next day he called to see that everything was OK. This is a small company (his wife does the books), and I am glad that I choose him. Maybe he should have charged more (he came with one helper); things are expensive in the Bay area. My advice: give him a chance to look at your situation. Note about Williams heater: Not as good as Empire. The blower on the Williams just sits on top as a separate unit. The Empire blower is on the inside and more powerful. I actually had to send the first Williams blower back because it would not automatically turn on when the heater got hot. read more
