I give 3 stars because I've only been here once. This is where hubby and I had breakfast our only full day in the area. My husband is a BIG fan of diners. After looking through the menu, which is a few pages, we settled on sharing the French Toast Deluxe. I'm glad we shared! As you can see from my pictures, it was a large amount of food. French Toast: 2 Giant pieces cooked to a fluffy point of perfection. Eggs: We got scrambled with mozz and had no complaints. Bacon: 2 strips, crispy, but a thicker cut then I'm used to. Sausage: Simple, but yummy. Ham: This I gave to hubby since he eats more in a meal than I do. Served with butter packs and container syrup, my only qualm is the syrup not being at least from a bottle. Those tubs have sooooo much added sugar! I stuck with butter and found it didn't need syrup. Topped off by our normal selection of iced coffee, this was a good way to start our day. The waitress was friendly. The place was very clean and kinda empty since we got there about 8A when I assume locals are busy with other things. read more

The outside of this diner isn't the prettiest, but don't let that fool you. My fiancé and I were taking a random road trip and after 40 minutes we ended up here. Our waitress was very sweet! It's a diner. Open kinda late serving warm food. It's not great. It's a diner. Desserts are sugary and some chocolately and satisfying in a guilty pleasure way. I have eaten here the chicken gyro and cobb salad. Both not great and not the stuff of happy memories, though not bad. Salad is pathetic as is the gelatinous dressing. There is no joy in the sad noncommunicative money-taker. When you're hungry and don't patronize fast food joints, this fills the bill. read more

Went here today, wow this place has changed. All new everything, including food. I got the Ambrosia Panini (chicken breast, fresh spinach, feta, red onions and pesto) i give 3 stars. If the onions were caramelized it would have been amazing, also if the bread was better, would've been a 5 star panini. French onion soup was okay, my boyfriend ordered chicken fingers and they didn't come with fries, but came with about 6 chicken fingers. One of my favorite things about New York state is no mater how small of a town you drive into there is a 99% chance there will be a diner. A nice little, shinny place where I can get a coffee and my eggs over easy. Staff was very nice. Took our order right away. I had my trifecta of drinks (OJ, Water and Coffee) in about five minutes. Food came out fast and hot. All in all it was a good experience. Now as a diner I gave it three stars because to me all diners are three stars unless they do something special for me. Another trait of New York diners is they mostly all have little bars. I love that. Jersey needs to catch up on that there. read more

If you've seen one diner, you've seen 'em all... That being said, I was satisfied with this place. We were in town for a wedding, and had planned on heading into Hudson to find a breakfast place, but the lovely woman at the Catskill Motor Court (see review) talked us into staying in the area, and told us how to get to Ambrosia. The only real issue I had, was that the menu was too extensive. Do I want steak? Burgers? Breakfast? Italian food? A wrap? Greek food? Dessert? It was very overwhelming and it took me forever to choose. I ended up getting the double stack of pancakes, which were good - a little crispy around the edges, which I always enjoy - with a side of bacon, which was standard, and a half grapefruit, which was actually sour and not very satisfying. The decor is new-ish and clean, and looks like it's straight out of the 1960s, like a lot of other diners I've been to. The prices are average, and the service was satisfactory. Would I go back? Only if I were ever to go to Catskill, NY again, and even then, I wouldn't object to trying someplace new. read more

Came here on a very rainy Sunday morning (although it might have been past noon, but whose really checking the time) with a huge group of people. The staff was super accommodating in getting us seated together by moving tables around. First off, our waitress rocked! Some of the people in my party can be a little sassy in a playful manner, asking questions about the pictures on the menu, stuff like that. She took it well and even laughed with everyone. She remembered everyone's order and was extremely attentive. Thanks for your patience!! We mostly ordered breakfast items, as well as a few bloody marys which were tasty and cheap! Although it took a while to get our food, since we have about 15 people in our party. Everything was served at the same time (amazingly) and everything was hot (even more amazingly). I dont know how the kitchen timed everything, but it was perfect. We loved the eggs, home fries, waffles, french toast, breakfast meats... everything you can think of, we tried and loved. My over medium eggs were cooked perfectly and the home fries were really tasty. Even the freaking rye toast was perfect. Would definitely come here again if I'm in the area. read more

Ambrosia is a typical diner. We seem to end up here each time we visit Catskill. The food was good each time we went , just what you would expect of diner food. A lot of choices on the menu though. The staff on the days we were there just recently, didnt seem too happy. Kind of just standing in their station, frowning. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. I came here during a weekend trip and stopped by for some food. We arrived as a group of 4 people with diverse ethnicities and received the worst service of my life. I am not sure what the waitresses name was but she was heavy set and had glasses with short, grey hair. I ordered waffles no whip cream or butter on it just strawberries. Then I see her go off in the corner and point at our table to another waitress saying look at who she has. The food arrives shortly after and she throws my plate down in front of me and says here is your "fun less" food. I get turned off by the way she presented my food and didn't want to eat the rest. When she returns she asks if I need anything I say no thank you I'm fine. She then rolled her eyes and mumbled something as she walked away. I am not sure what her problem was but that attitude and way of speaking to us was far from professional. This is based on two stops. The first time I had the cheeseburger deluxe. I thought it was a good tasting burger, the coleslaw was good too. Everything you expect from when eating at a diner. My wife had a salad and she thought it was great. Second time I got the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. My wife got the cheeseburger deluxe. Two of our friends got a panini, one a turkey club and the other a tuna melt. Everything looked delicious. The bacon, egg and cheese was phenomenal. It was the bacon. I asked for xtra cripsy and they delivered. And, it's really good bacon. The panini's looked great. Our friends said they tasted great. They were big so they each only ate half and took the rest home. The other two sandwiches were good also. Can't wait to go back there again. The diner is pretty standard. I'd say that the service is above average which is what makes it a perfect place for breakfast with out-of-town relatives I don't even like. The food (usually breakfast only) has been pretty standard. The french toast is excellent and one of the better ones I have that never disappoints. Omelettes are a different story and sometimes come out over-cooked. Some people may prefer this but at the same time, what you get is not consistent. Hash browns are usually ok but I have received an order that was slightly on the colder side. So, like I said before. The service is really what sells this place for me to go back regularly - they never let my coffee cup go empty. read more

My experience started when I went to ladies room and not only found one of the cleanest rest rooms around the last was cleaning the doors and walls!!!! Then as I walked to my table I glanced behind the counter to find NOTHING out of place or on the floor. We were greeted by an awesome waitress. Our food was awesome . I understand that if it costs more to stay open then close early however on numerous occasions I have gone in later on a Friday night with groups of friends from the city, excited to show them our town's local diner and although tables were still eating inside, I was told every time that they are closing early and unfortunately could not seat us. While right now I am unsure of the exact business hours every time I have gone in late and told it was closed it was before their posted hours on the door, which is disappointing. I am not talking about showing up 10 minutes before close either (respectfully, I wouldn't do that), it was at least an hour before the posted time which is why I have gotten upset each time.. My recommendation to owner is to make new hours and not change every weekend based on how business is doing at that time. As one of the only places to get food in town after I don't know 9pm? She packages it to make it easy to travel out with: drink tray with straws and drink condiments, and tied closed the bag of food. One of my favorite places to eat in catskill. Some diners are iffy and you stick with eggs or a burger. Not this place. Everything on the menu is delicious. My favorite is there BBQ chicken and ribs special. It is fall off the bone delicious. One weird thing is there almond horn isn't what you think it is. To get the cook shaped horn, ask them specifically. Will continue to come here all the time! read more

Eh, as another reviewer most accurately put it: "If you've seen one diner, you've seen 'em all". That's the best I can say about this dive, and that's even saying too much for it. Ambrosia Diner - a dingy-looking, old-school diner, used to be open 24hrs, but after suffering a very newsworthy scandal a number of years back that the locals still remember but would prefer to forget, they now close at 10pm. The food here is not even on par with standard diner fare. Simple things, like fries, arrived at the table barely cooked and stale tasting (they were frozen fries, so how old could they even be this stale?). Standard sandwiches are apparently a challenge for the staff here too, with the bread being dry, and with minimal fillings. I ordered the "half roasted chicken", which arrived pink and raw in the center. My interpretation of a "half roasted chicken" is a roasted chicken cut in half. THEIRS, apparently, is a chicken which has only been half-roasted. Ugh! The Hub ordered the Chopped Steak with fried onions, which turned out to merely be 2 hamburger patties slapped together with a smattering of barely-cooked, steamed onions. Horrible! As if things weren't bad enough, our lazy waitress didn't bother to return to our table to refill water even once, nor to inquire if we needed anything. Not only did she forget to bring condiments and other items we'd originally requested, but when she did emerge again, it was only to plop the check onto our table mid-meal, which I found somewhat insulting, considering how we didn't even make a fuss about the raw chicken that was served, among other things. Had Ambrosia Diner not been the only eatery open at 10pm within a 20 mile radius up here (yes, fellow NYCites, this is NOT an exaggeration, such is life up there) I would have stuck to my guns and continued my boycott of this place, but since The Hub wasn't in the picture at the time this place made its infamous headlines, he urged me to give it another shot. Bad move! He should have gotten tipped-off by the fact that there wasn't anyone besides us in the place at 8pm on a Saturday night (remember - this is the only place open for miles). Next time, we'll either eat somewhere else earlier; cook at the house; or simply remain hungry until morning. Any and all are a better choice than revisting this dive ever again. Gotta give it to them for consistency, though: They were lousy then, and they are still lousy now. read more

We live on the other side of the river and are rarely in Catskill especially at 10:00 on a Friday evening. We were hungry and chose to try Ambrosia and it certainly did not disappoint. Quaint, old school, traditional, classic diner serving up truly delicious classic diner favorites and the old fashioned service to boot. I swear Dean Martin was on the jukebox when we rolled in.. I had the veggie burger with fries and my Fella had challah bread French toast, eggs potatoes and bacon with rye. Their desserts and pies looked AMAZING TOO! Classic do not miss spot right off NYS and convenient to downtown Catskill area. We will definitely be back. read more

It's a diner! Certain items are reasonable, some overpriced. For the only diner in the area, what do you expect? Lots of loyal locals, pretty crowded breakfasts, food is hit or miss, but never foul. At least there is plenty of parking around the back!! The owners, once they know your name, will greet you every time.
