First of all, I should preface this review with acknowledgment of a minor bias. Being from the Bay Area and having lived in Oregon for the last 6 years, there is a chance I may have hyped California Mexican food in my mind too much; I don't think so but there's always a chance. Had lunch here with some colleagues (I've been here before but it's been 10+ years). In general, the group found the ordering method a bit wonky. It falls for me into the category of one of those spots who did some things for Covid and has continued those practices because they seemed to work. You go into a line and order entrees at the first station; but it's not clear which ones and some are precooked and some aren't. But you don't order beverages or sides there you do that at the register. Seating is self service and you grab your own napkins and silverware at the bar. Fine; but if you don't know no one is going to tell you even if you ask. Food - pretty decent food. I got the shrimp plate. Rice and beans standard - and lots of them. Came for lunch on a weekday, late afternoon, and we were waiting at the entrance for someone to acknowledge us. 3 different staff saw us walk in and wait and not one had any courtesy to say hi or that someone would be with us, nothing. Even with a 5% SF mandate tax & $5 tip, good value for $102.40. The food was that good. But the reason I give a 3 rather than 4 is inattentive service & the price of salsas. Nobody told us to get silverware or napkins. Or where to get water. Clearly the staff doesn't have service in mind. I'm okay with charging for salsas, but $2 for a tiny cup? So many Mexican restaurants either don't charge or at least give you fair portions. The service here is great. I sat in the bar area while waiting for my friend and the server there was very personable. It helped that we liked the same flavors. Once my friend arrived we got a table. We had the chips and salsa that were great. We also had the Old School Combo which was okay. I enjoyed the grilled chicken taco, however the cheese mole enchilada was a different story. My first experience here was great, which is what made the second visit a little surprising. We came for dinner the first time and had an excellent meal. The carne asada was really well done, the margaritas were great, and the overall experience left us wanting to return. We raved about our experience and eagerly looked forward to returning. When we returned mid afternoon, the setup was completely different. The restaurant was operating more like a fast casual taco bar, where you order at the counter as they make the food in front of you. A large portion of the seating was closed off, so you order first and then look for a place to sit if one is available. Drinks are handled separately, meaning you have to go to the bar and open a second tab for cocktails, which felt disjointed. It is helpful to know this going in. Tropisueno has great food and happy hour menu, however their service can be a mix. On this particular visit, I got there at 5:10pm (Sunday 7/12) and got seated right away with a menu. I was seated near the windows, unfortunately behind a post. I keeping waiting for a waitstaff to come by to get my order, or at least pour some water and acknowledge I was there. At the time, there were 3 other tables (party of 1, 2, and 2) inside the restaurant. Party of 1 was already eating, the other two parties got water and their orders in. At 5:26pm, I waited enough and got up and left. I told the hostess (3 people standing there btw), that I was leaving due to no service in the last 15 minutes, not even water. It seems like there's no communication between the hostess and the waiter staff. If you want somewhere with faster service in the Yerba Lane area, head to Ippudo Ramen. I used to come for lunch when I was younger and had good memories of this place. I came with my parents for dinner one night when we were in the area. We didn't know the dinner menu was different and a lot more expensive. We got the pork 3 ways plate, chili verde plate, and tacos (birria, carne asada, and Baja fish). The best thing was the Baja fish taco, which was really crispy. The birria taco was way too wet. The carne asada needed some salsa and felt a bit dry and bland. The chili verde was a bit salty and dry too, we needed some salsa for everything. Overall it seemed like this is a better place for drinks at night rather than food and the total of our meal came out to almost $100 for Mexican food. The restaurant is pretty big and has lots of larger tables to accommodate the FiDi team dinners. Inside is super loud and more crowded. Outside has some tables and lots of heat lamps which is perfect for the SF winds. We shared the Chips & Salsa ($4.25 - 3.5/5 - chips were very thin and nicely fried and salsa were average but the spicy orange one was the best tasting) and I got the Carne Asada Tacos ($20 - 3/5 very average taco and wished there was more flavor to this one). The food is reasonably priced and good (though I wouldn't say anything spectacular). My favorite dish was the chile con queso. They have a good size menu with lots of appetizers.
