We had American Painting paint the outside of our house. This is our second time using American Painting. The review and quote process was fast and accurate. The painting crew completed power washing, small areas of maintenance and color matching before the painting started. The crew was courteous/organized, and the entire job was finished in a few days. Gary and his team are the absolute BEST! No question we made the right decision hiring American Painting. We didn't have an easy job. Three wood garage doors that the varnish had faded on, two exterior wood doors (again new varnish)... but one of them is a huge oversized door with intricate detail and lots of decorative metal on it. Gary sent Jose, who literally spent a week getting the disgusting eggplant colored stain (which was stubborn and didn't want to cone off), sanded the entire door and stained it the most beautiful color! Every bit of the door took the stain differently and it shows such intricate detail! We also needed our kitchen touched up after having another company stain our floors. We have a faux glaze on antique white cabinets and they matched it perfectly. Even extra touch ups where needed due to normal wear and tear. There's no more wood floor stain damage and the kitchen looks brand new! The easiest job was repairing a ceiling that had water damage. We'd had the leak fixed and they made the ceiling perfect! Unfortunately it was a long job (particularly for the front door) because Jose insisted on perfection when stripping and staining but they never complained about the scope of work Pricing didn't change even though the entire job took longer than they anticipated. Not one complaint from them, always prompt to show up and gave us lots of choices prior to finalizing both the paint and stains. We will never use a different Company. I had hired Gary Bens of American Painting in Saint Charles also working with Nevin Bens, for a deck extension, new stairs, and a composite railing. Beware of the initial quote. They lowball the quote to get the contract. My material quote ended up being more than double the original quote. There is no work schedule, never knowing if anyone will show up. It was six trips of material purchases because they didn't know what they needed. They didn't mention delivery charges. I'm stuck with excess materials that wasn't needed. I'm left with an unfinished deck that was not approved by the Village inspector. Gary told the inspector he would be finish the job next week and that was August 2024. My contract reads this project is under warranty for five years but AM Painting refuses to finish the job. Buyer beware, research other options. read more

I hired them for painting my whole house. Gary subcontracted the work and the workers used substandard painting and did not come few days at a time. I am extremely disappointed. The old painting was of must better quality even though i was 20 years old. Any spots on walls would get cleaned up when i wiped with a wet napkin. Quote comes in lower than other painters but be careful. Assess brand/grade and number of coats and primer before they paint. High quality paint was not used, coupled with Improper scraping , prep work and priming throughout exterior resulted in paint peeling, exposing wood within 2-21/2 years. There is cracking on the gutters ,etc. Warranty is two years but when we brought problems to OWNER's attention within warranty period, he did not return calls and/or emails until two-year warranty was up. Then he responded, quoting for labor + paint (our expense) for re-doing/touchups. Previous jobs lasted 5-7 years. This one started to deteriorate within 2-21/2 years! Now, much sooner than anticipated, the exterior needs repainting at great expense. Penny wise pound foolish. (The carpenter did a decent job on wood repair). read more

RUN!!!! When the owner arrived to give us an estimate he stated the job would be done in 1 week..the contract also had hand written by the owner Gary Bens completed in a week. He said he'd send his crew and blah blah blah... 9 weeks later and 2 1/2 months of no privacy the job was finally finished. The crew of professional painters turned out to be 1 solo worker!! Their mission statement claims the owner only uses experienced painters w 10 yrs plus experience. His solo painter would bring his 16yr old neighbor to help on weekends and an inexperienced buddy on a few occasions. To top it off my family had to endure ended swearing f this..f that for months. The mission statement claims professionals in uniform...on several occasions the painter and his buddy worked topless. After waiting for 2 1/2 months once the painter was finished the owner Gary Bens asked..demanded payment the same minute the job was completed. We requested he come the following day to collect himself. We had every intention of paying him..we simply wanted an explanation for all the issues mentioned above. Upon his early a.m. arrival after a minute of pleasantries when my husband asked him to explain Gary Bens got right up to my husband's face and threatened him with physical harm. Unbeknownst to Gary our son overheard and saw from inside...Gary proceeded to yell at my 67 yr old husband saying "no one is here to know what will happen to you!!! Then our son went out w our large dog and warned him to leave our premises. We did pay him that day as we always intended to ..in full. Other than making repeated threats via text he never so much as offered an apology or explanation. We did file a police report although the officer that came suggested we file criminal charges. read more

Can't say enough about Gary and the crew he sent to paint our home. First he sent in the carpentry guys- who were fast, professional, reasonably priced, and very accommodating with "extras" we needed- like replacing all of the rotten spindles on our screened porch and handcrafting a top railing to match what they didn't need to replace. The painting crew, led by Vincente, were awesome as well. Communication was good and job got done at a great price by the date it needed to- even if the guys had to be here past 7 pm one night because of previous rainy weather. Was referred to them by two of my neighbors- and so glad we used them! Don't be scared off by some poor reviews- seems if you pay them as contracted, for the work they did as contracted, there aren't any issues. Sounds reasonable to me! read more

Got the exterior painting of my home done in June 2022 from American Painting inc. It was chosen because of its good customer reviews in "Best Pick Reports". My initial experience of contacting the office and getting a quote/ contract was quite prompt and good. However, the things started downhill once the project was signed and accepted. First of all, the project could get started only after contacting the office through multiple calls, texting, and sending emails .The crew was not well organized, the supervisor didn't provide any details of the tasks to be completed during the day, not much effort was made to protect the ground and plants during the pressure wash and scraping stages, had to pay 2.5 times the initial estimate of replacing the damaged cedar sidings, only 1 coat (white) finish done for the trim, soffits & facia, top parts of the chimney were left with old paint, and the ground area was not properly cleaned after the project completion. The owner/ president of the company was sent a note to complete the left over top chimney covers but it was not done even after waiting for more than a month! In a nutshell, here is the PROs and CONs list: PROs: good start with detailed contract and reasonably priced quote. CONs: after signing the contract you are left on your own to make extra efforts wasting your time and energy for pressing a start date, getting the project completed in a continuous fashion without any interruption, to make sure of asking the details for the day and what's next, and to insist on getting a clean area and complete the unfinished things. read more

After the project was over I noticed some screen damage which may or may not have occured during the painting as I had other work done to replace my roof. He fixed it no questions asked and even fixed other sceens I know they didnt damage. I asked if I could pay to get them done. He said no charge and did them all. Never use this company for your painting job. You got what you paid for. They subcontracted the job out to the lowest bids. Those guys just power washed your exterior, and then spray painting to cover all the underneath problems. They did the whole thing in one day. Never scraped the loose paints, never sanded the trim, never chalked the joints, and never used brush or roller. The spay painting was so thin so bad, it will start bubbling and peeling within two years. Once you paid them, you will never find them again if you have any issues. read more

I don't know where to start, but first and foremost...if you need any painting done, call Gary (or Michelle). They were professional, accommodating to our needs, and did a gorgeous job! Neighbors drive by and don't know us, but will stop to comment on how beautiful of a job they did. We've used MANY different painters, handymen, contractors etc and my biggest pet peeve is if they say they'll come one day and never show up. Just call to tell me you can't come, and I won't even question why. Just notify me. Never once did they not come when they said they would. If it was raining, we obviously knew they couldn't come, but they would still call me. We thought most of the trim around our windows outside had deteriorated and we would need new trim which would increase our cost. They were absolutely truthful. They replaced only which ones that needed to be. They didn't try to steal our money. And we told them we "knew" we'd need more work done, but they were honest. The work was done in a timely manner (rainy weather is only reason it took a little longer than we thought it would). They were all so nice, respectful and a joy to work with. We believe in referring to our friends who we are happy with. But we want EVERYONE to know how wonderful they are. I don't know why they have any stars under 5, but with all the many projects we've done in our old home and now in this new home, I want to help everyone get the best (or warn about untrustworthy or unprofessional people). And I don't get any "commission" for referrals for them. Thank you, Gary, Michelle, Jose and Rob. I did not like the outer look of my home when we bought it, yet we all loved the inside, but you all made me fall in love with my home. Avoid this crook at all costs! If I could show negative stars we would. My story briefly. Last year we selected American Painting to repaint the exterior of our home. He quotes us $1,600 to replace rotted wood. This obviously has to be completed prior to painting. The crew comes out to perform the work and drive two nails through the wall into the bathroom shower, destroying the tile. We were furious as we had to source the tile to repair the shower. As any reasonable person would do we politely informed the owner Gary that we will be using a different contractor for the painting. This is where Gary showed his true colors, and the scumbag demands 50% of the job as a cancellation fee!! No way are we going to agree to this and even offer him $500 for a release, which he declines. Then a year later sends the invoice again and a week later a letter from a lawyer that he is going to sue us!! Now we are going to have to sue for consumer fraud and the damage he created to our home. Like I said, Gary and American Painting is a crook and a scam artist. An awful experience and and even worse work quality. We were told the job would take a week and there would be a crew of painters working on our job. It took over 2 months! There was a single guy to complete a job that was simply too big. The guy left the job to start a 2nd job (unrelated to my home) after he completed 1/4 of the work. We were told that one of his best guys would be coming to finish the job. That didn't happen. He contracted with a new painter, he'd never worked with before to do the job. We occasionally had more than a single painter. We agreed that they would use 2 coats of paint, they only used 1 and now the underlying color is bleeding through. There are paint drips in various places in the house. Gary did cover a paint upgrade and give a minimal discount on additional electrical work, but the paint job is SO bad and took SO long, I just wanted the whole process done and over. Again, there's only a single coat, so the free "paint upgrade" is useless because the underlying color is bleeding through on the walls. The number of times I had to point out issues with the paint job were too numerous to count. Just save yourself a huge headache, poor work quality, and an unnecessarily long job. read more

Gary had an appointment window of 4-5pm. I reiterated that I would be leaving work early to make this appointment, so if he was unable to make it to give me a heads up. At 5:05 I get a call saying he hasn't left the office yet, he will be there in 10 minutes. 20 minutes later he shows up. (should have taken this as a red flag). Get the quote for the interior and exterior work to be done, about $4000 worth. He calls on a Wednesday and we agree the work will start the next Monday at 8am. He and his crew will be out there. Rather then come by (10 minute drive) and pick up the contract, he asks me to mail it. Monday comes and goes, no call, no show. About 10:45am he finally calls and isn't apologetic or anything. Basically saying we can write up a new contact. Sorry I'll pass. Someone who doesn't value other people's time isn't someone that will earn my business. read more

American Painting, Inc. was very helpful for my family's situation. We didn't need an entirely new set of siding, which is what a lot of other companies tried to sell us on. The owner came by and said that they could repair and replace the parts that needed it, and then paint everything to make it look newer. That's exactly what they did. Instead of paying $20K, I paid $4.5K. I am quite satisfied with their work and recommend you contact them for whatever you need for your house. read more

DO NOT WORK WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!! The owner Gary was misleading about payment options. When getting estimates for a paint project I asked if I could pay with credit card and he told me yes, they take all forms of payment. Fast forward to completion and now he says I have to pay money order! Oh and he threatened to put a LIEN on my house if I don't pay the way he wants me to!!! Giving 1 star is still too much. They are so horrible, I don't know where to start. I will start with most recent. After only 4 months the paint peeled off my deck. Even though the contract says they power wash everything first, they didn't do my deck. Worthless owner Gary tells me flat service isn't warrantied even though it started peeling in 4 months and they wrongfully didn't power wash. Going with the lowest price isn't worth it because they won't do anything they sell you on unless you watch them like a hawk. First Gary subcontracted his work out to guys that shouldn't be painting. They say they will scrape walls, but don't even carry one in pocket. They started painting and I asked why they didn't scrape first and he actually said they do it after first coat. Unless you catch them they don't caulk anything above eye level. They skip steps, but will have an excuse for everything. Put a finished date on contract and didn't start job until after that date. Even though Garys painters don't do what's written in contract, Gary instead of fixing problem first he will shove contract down your throat. Hands down worst business owner I ever met. After a week of complaining Gary finally came to job site, so he could finally see the horrible job they did. Gary made a comment that made my jaw drop, he said "not all home owners are home to watch the job they do and don't realize we skip steps". I couldn't believe he admitted that. I wish we paid more money, so job would have been done right. I got so tired of complaining I let them finish and fixed their mistake ourselves. Another thing that made me laugh was Garys subcontractor asked him for more money because they had to do more work (because they needed to do what was in contract) and he wanted us to pay it. This company was hired to paint decks in a townhouse community I'm associated with through a family member. Many of the reviews I read here resonate with me and we didn't even use this company. First office lady made false claim that HOA pays for repairs on deck prior to painting which is not the case. That was her response when I asked her why she was calling to tell me when carpenter was coming to make a repair when I only asked for an estimate at that point. What company just sends out a carpenter to make a major repair without first providing an estimate which I made very clear my request for an estimate specifically saying send carpenter to assess repair and leave estimate between the front doors. Secondly I was at the residence townhouse looking at the deck waiting for MY painter to come to give an estimate when a very young teenage girl approached us and asked if we wanted them to power wash our deck. I was shocked. No wonder there was an issue with another reviewer here that says his deck peeled shortly after painting because it wasn't power washed. Perhaps these kids say they power-wash and don't? Perhaps missed one or two and thought they did it, but didn't? Additionally the neighbors deck was just painted by them the day before I was there and it rained that day. Rain was in the forecast so why would they paint someone's deck when rain was in the forecast the very next day? Rain all over a freshly painted deck. The coverage was also questionable you could clearly see the roughness of the wood through the fresh coating being rained on. I just had my deck painted with the same product by my painter and the coverage is superb. read more
