I initially started with Capital Pest, great company with knowledgeable techs. Since being bought out by American Pest, the prices have increased and service has decreased. I called today to inquire about changing plans because my service needs since I began. I was transferred to a supposed "retention manager" who made no attempt at retaining me as a customer. Capital Pest had tiered plans that met the needs of the varying services a customer may require. American Pest seems only concerned with charging the most money they can. I cancelled my contract with American Pest. I can do better on my own. read more

Highly recommend this company. We've had to use them in the past to illuminate for years that our dog caught at the vet. We also called them when we were concerned about some bugs on our deck. The technician came out and told us what they were and that they would not be a problem anymore once the weather dried up. Today I had to call about a fly issue in a new home. The operator was very honest and told me ideas of what to do so that I didn't waste my money with her coming out and not being able to do much more than I could do on my own. Mismanaged poor scheduling who schedules an indoor fumigation from 7-6 pm and then expects the family to vacate the home for 2 hours this company has become a joke. They will say anything to gain your business and tie you into a contract the 1st few visits were great the tech was on time explained what was going to be done. Within the last few months this company or management has gone for 5 to 0 star in my opinion. Once this contract is done I will take my business else where. I typically don't like to leave bad reviews but be warned. In your contract you are required to pay monthly on a cc yet they only come out quarterly. And if you request extra service they claim this is no available tech before your quarterly scheduled appointment. read more

We are disappointed in American Pest. We have had a persistent mouse problem that they have not addressed. They have been responsive and have come when we call to complain about seeing mice in our kitchen, but NOTHING THEY HAVE DONE HAS WORKED. We know exactly where the mice are coming from - behind the stove - and despite "sealing" it, the mice came back immediately. It just seems like shoddy work - we've never been given any indication that it's not a problem they can fix, yet the mice KEEP COMING BACK - even the day after American Pest came to fix the traps and "seal" behind the oven! Our house is a new build and we keep it very clean - I find it hard to believe that there is nothing else they can do to keep mice from crawling all over the place where we prepare our food (and if there isn't, they should let us know that instead of continuing to fail to address our problem). read more

We had mice in our house and needed an exterminator to get rid of them. Expecting that a pest management company did more than eliminate the pest, i.e. put out traps, but addresses the root cause we booked an appointment with American Pest based on the favorable reviews here on Yelp. The service included internal and external check, plugging of entry points smaller than a baseball and one follow-up visit. The technician did arrive on time within the 2 hour window and his focus was generally to put down traps and leave. We asked questions about what types of traps were put out, if they had poisonous materials (we have a dog), when and how they should be removed and what other recommendations he had to avoid infestations in the future. He was unable to answer most of the questions. He also did not know that there is a follow-up visit within 30 days that would remove the traps. While I understand that mice control will largely revolve around traps it is not unreasonable to expect that technicians know the protocol followed for site visits, general recommendations etc. I was left with the impression that the technician was brand new and had not received the necessary training. If you are looking for somebody to put out snap traps you have found your company. If you are looking for a more comprehensive solution I would recommend going elsewhere. read more

This pest company showed up to our house at 7:40am, 1hr and 20 minutes before business hours with no warning whatsoever, disturbing our entire household. We had scheduled a service the day prior, at a specific time. It was raining, and the agent specified I would be contacted by the office for rescheduling. I never heard a peep, and instead had my house awakened by multiple doorbell rings at 7am. This is in addition to a lack of email responsiveness. read more

I feel compelled to write a second review for this amazing business. My first experience with them was for small ants that invaded my house. They were identified as odorous ants by Doug, the owner, who inspected my house. They got rid of these ants in an unbelievable short time...within 3 days there was no sightings of live ants. This was a major infestation that previous exterminators could not put a dent in. I was a skeptic by the time Doug came into my house, but he proved that there are exterminating businesses that do know what they are doing. A few weeks ago I started seeing Carpenters ants in my third floor master bathroom and called American Pest Control and they came and identified the problem. They came back within a couple of days and treated my whole house including the foundation. Result...NEVER SAW A LIVE CARPENTER ANT SINCE! I had used Capital Pest for many years and been very happy with them. They recently became American Pest and my experience with them has not been a good one. When I first called for a termite inspection I was told I would be called back and never was, than I finally was able to get a request for the inspection for 2 properties for any evidence of termites. They called a number that was outdated but did manage to do the inspections. Their contracts are very expensive plus they have a policy of not giving back a refund on a contract if the property is sold. In general a very disorganized company that I would not recommend. read more

I really like this company. My house had a lot of bugs this summer- specifically pillbugs. Then I found a silverfish in my bed! I was sure that the home was infested... I'm definitely terrified of bugs. Doug came and did an inspection of the home and assured my family that we did not have an infestation (although he totally could have hustled me into an expensive service i didn't need)! We signed up for a quarterly treatment contract- I think it's more preventative than anything, since we didn't have any full-on infestation. Sam did our first treatment and I noticed a difference right away. THEN our basement flooded and after construction I found a cockroach (which I had never seen before). Of course, I thought we had an infestation all over again. Sam came back, viewed a picture of the roach, and told me that it's not the type of roach that multiplies... it was American and not German. He assured me that there wasn't an infestation (although I totally could have been hustled by a dishonest company AGAIN.) He did the same treatment as the first time (spraying for american roaches, pillbugs, silverfish, and other bugs), told me what to look for in the future, and left me feeling comfortable and happy! Sam is super cool and I'm so grateful that he didn't make me feel silly for being afraid. He specifically told me that he understands and he felt the same way before he started working at American Pest Control (I suppose now hes not afraid because he's seen everything.) I know the treatments worked because before Sam sprayed along my windows, I could always see tons of bugs flying and buzzing outside my window at night. It was like they were hovering around the window, looking at the light in my home, hoping to break through the glass (if they could). It was so scary because they were only a few feet away from me!!!! However NOW, after the two sprays, there are no bugs flying outside near the window! I can shine all the lights in the world and they won't go NEAR the window. I can sleep comfortably having turned the bug problem over to these wonderful, honest, kind, and skilled professionals. They told us that we needed to do the canine inspection for bed bugs as it was much more accurate. The canine came through, taking maybe fifteen minutes. They said they didn't find bedbugs. This inspection cost 400 dollars, more than 2x the price that we were charged by another company later. They called us to reschedule less than an hour before the time planned. When an inspector came out to physically examine, since we still thought something was biting us, they found evidence in the couch and then didn't look elsewhere. They quoted us over 3 thousand dollars for treatment (the second opinion we got charged half of that). We asked them to apply the cost of the canine inspection to the fee and were told that actually, the result of the canine inspection was inconclusive because the inspector couldn't go everywhere. We did not refuse the inspector entry to any part of the house. Additionally they will not guarantee their work. They said there was a zero day warranty because we share a wall with another unit. We have gone with a different company who was much more professional, and with a much better price. I wish we'd found them first. read more

I would have given them 3 stars but they have really bad accounting services. I gave them my card to charge for service way back in November/December and they never did. I am totally late writing this review but I just had to make sure I did. My technician's name was Troy I believe. He serviced my apartment in Landover MD. He was extremely patient and knowledgeable about what he was doing. He answered all my questions about prevention and so forth. I went room to room laying out traps for me. Thankfully I was there and he was the one who found the source/ entry point of my pest problem. He laid more traps and I even went and purchased more traps myself because of how petrified I was. In 2 days,I caught the pest and have been problem free since then. That was back in May/June. Thank you thank you Troy for your patience and diligence in finding the problem. Contacted this company on October 17 to schedule a preventative Pest control service for our new home. Scheduled an appointment for the afternoon of October 20 for a free estimate. A few hours before a technician was due to arrive, I received a call from the company saying the person who was supposed to come called out that morning. For one that's unprofessional and two that's not my problem. They called back and asked if it was okay if we did a phone interview. I said sure and answered all of the questions asked. At the end of the call, I was told they'd prepare an estimate and send it via email that evening or Friday morning. It's now been a week and I still have not heard back from anyone. This company is running quite the scam. They took over the phone number of the local pest control in Charlottesville Va. They sold me a bill of goods about termite protection, never did an inspection, claimed it was termites based on a single photo I sent them. Charged me $600 to install termite shield, did no treatment at all for my existing problem, then charged me $40 a month for monthly service, its been 5 months NO ONE HAS EVER COME HERE SINCE INSTALLATION. I called the local manager who told me, no inspections were really necessary , regardless of what the salesmen told me. BUT that he would send someone to do a treatment. NO ONE EVER CAME and if I stop paying they say they have the right to remove what I paid $600 for, this is totally disreputable and just a money grab read more

APC was recommended by our condo building manager shortly after my husband and I moved into our new place and I found a bug I suspected was a bedbug. Having lived in NYC, I am no stranger to this awful pest...but of course you always want to be sure. APC offers free inspections, which is great. Because of this, there is often a wait time of a few days. If you are able to sit tight and wait a few days for them to inspect, I suggest you do so. Doug, the owner, was able to make it out to our place to conduct the inspection himself. He confirmed that the bug I found was indeed a bedbug. He looked at the specimens I had obtained first before proceeding to do a thorough inspection of the bed and couch (the only two pieces of upholstered furniture in the condo because we had just moved in). No evidence of bedbugs in the bed or couch, but since we had found live ones near the baseboards he encouraged us to proceed with treatment. I was really hopeful that the bedbug sniffing dog would make an appearance, but when I inquired, I was told that the dog doesn't work in the summer because the heat makes for a higher inaccuracy rate. Fair enough. Speaking of dogs...my dog (Nigel) loved Doug. I consider my dog to be a very good judge of character. Doug and I were sitting on the couch discussing treatment options and Nigel kept soliciting Doug for pets. It was adorable. Doug was very sweet with him. So if you have animals in your home during the inspection, no need to worry. Doug and I set up an appointment for treatment the following week. Of course I ended up calling him in the meantime to ask him questions about the prep work that needed to be done, and he never acted exasperated. He was very kind and answered all of my panicked phone calls in a calm, knowledgeable manner. He also empathized with me about our condo association refusing to pay for the cost of treatment and provided suggestions for convincing them to pay, or at least getting them to check other units in the building for bedbugs (my husband and I ended up paying for the treatment ourselves, and I don't think they ever got permission to check any of the other units, but I appreciated the gesture). Treatment was easy though it's recommended you don't sleep in your house the first night and there are some very specific aftercare instructions. I've waited several months to write this review because 1) needing pest control services can be kind of embarrassing and 2) I wanted to make sure treatment actually worked. It's been over 3 months and not a single bedbug sighting. APC actually guarantees their services for an entire year (or they will come out and treat again for free!) which also made me feel very confident choosing them for my pest control needs. I had to have a neighbor come and help me put it back together. Then they took everything out of my living room closet, and this is how they left it. (see photos) I tried to call them to no avail. We signed an annual service contract with these guys when we moved to Loudoun. I'd never seen the need for bi-monthly pest control before, but this was the largest house we'd owned and it backed to woods in an area rife with Lyme. Also, ewh. Bugs. I've been very happy with their service. They send out helpful email reminders for service and, despite what some other reviewers seem to think, you don't actually have to be home for the service unless you specifically request indoor treatment. (At least 75% of the time, they do outdoor only for us.) They have always provided us a four hour window and the technicians are very friendly and professional. One of my favorite things about American Pest is that if you are on a contract with them, additional treatments between your scheduled treatments are gratis. So when the weather heats up early or you suddenly notice a bunch of stinkbugs, all you have to do is email them. They've always had someone here within 3 days, including weekends. I also very much appreciate how they consider your household. We have two dogs and recently added a baby. The technicians always gave clear recommendations about exposing the dogs to an area after a treatment. Once our baby arrived, they completely changed the chemicals they use in rooms that the baby spends a lot of time in. I've never gotten a sales pitch from them, or an upsell. I have no complaints about American Pest and would gladly recommend them to a friend. read more

I called American Pest Control based on the reviews and high rating here. I was expecting great service, but I was beyond impressed with Doug from American Pest Control!!! We had a home health aide, for my mother, sleep on our couch and sit on a chair that she believed had bedbugs, because she had tiny, itchy welts on her arms. So I needed to have the problem taken care of before the aide returned for my next trip out of town. Doug came out and he could find no evidence of bedbugs. He didn't find bedbugs, but he did find $1,400 in cash that my mom had stashed under the chair cushion many years ago. He didn't charge us for the visit, but we are now $1,400 richer. BONUS! Doug was polite, courteous, and told amusingly educational stories. We learned a lot about not only bedbugs but how to prevent bringing bedbugs home from hotels. We also found out that American Pest Control is the only local company that exterminates bedbugs with 1 treatment that is guaranteed for 1 year! I would like to praise and extend kudos to AmericanPest: An ANTICEMEX Company, as well as to the Riverside Apartments' property manager and other Riverside personnel. Riverside is an apartment complex in Alexandria, Virginia. Mr. DeAndre Dunn, an employee of American Pest, has worked in close collaboration with the property manager of Riverside Apartments. Mr. Dunn has proved to be a "miracle worker." In the winter and spring, there was a rat infestation behind Building 3 of Riverside Apartments. One night I saw 9/repeat 9 rats in the space of a few seconds behind Building 3 on/near the loading dock, near the back walls of the building and scrambling along the sidewalk. Mr. Dunn, under the supervision of the RIverside property manager, has aggressively tackled the problem -- crisis, really -- of the Building 3 rat infestation and ended it. I say this is a "miracle," because this seemed to be an impossible task when I first saw evidence of the rat infestation, with rats and mice scrambling in all directions in the dark of night. Mr. Dunn, presumably with the assistance of the grounds crew, appears to have identified and sealed off the rats' nesting sites and hiding places. The rats and mice had dug holes all along the back wall of Building 3 and constructed a complex warren of tunnels. Mr. Dunn and Riverside personnel deprived the rodents of their nesting sites and places of refuge. Doubtless at the recommendation of AmericanPest and Mr. Dunn, the property manager and RIverside personnel have worked to clean up the debris piles and clutter on/around Building 3's loading dock and sought to remove the remains of foodstuffs left as trash. Likely also at the advice of Mr. Dunn, Riverside personnel also have been more aggressive in hosing down the loading dock and surrounding areas. Mr. Dunn has sought to use rat poisons -- specifically, rodenticide -- and bait boxes in a more intelligent and aggressive strategy to eliminate the existing rat infestation and deter rats and mice from returning to their former nests and warrens of tunnels behind Building 3. Mr. Dunn has used rodenticide in manners designed to minimize any danger to people, dogs and other pets, not to mention more innocuous wildlife. As a result of Mr Dunn's strategy, I have not seen any rats or mice behind Building 3 in weeks. That is why I call Mr. Dunn a "miracle worker. " Mr Dunn, in collaboration with the RIverside property manager, appear to have ended the crisis of the recent rat infestation, killed the rats and mice, repelled new rodents from nesting near the building and from taking up residecne in the building itself. That is a disaster averted, thanks to the hard work of Mr. Dunn, the RIverside property manager, and other Riverside personnel. AmericanPest: An Anti-CEMEX Company should recognize and reward Mr. DeAndre Dunn for his hard work, attention to detail, and aggressiveness in achieving results. I had Terminex out and they told me YES - you have a big infestation - and here is a contract and it will cost you $1,968. THANKFULLY I listened to my instincts and got a second opinion. I called American Pest Control in Rockville and Becky was very concerned about my situation, knowing I had already signed a contract with Terminex and had only 3 days to cancel the contract. Becky had an inspector come out the next day. I opened the door to Doug and knew no matter what the outcome I was in good hands! He spent an hour inspecting the target bedroom - and concluded there was NO evidence of infestation and NO treatment needed. READ your contracts carefully - note the differences - Terminex has a guarantee if you can call it that for 3 months with multiple retreatments. Am Pest Control has a one year warranty. Their website is so informative for anyone who travels and needs a better understanding how to best protect your home. At the end of the day - right now - no pesty bed bugs. I called APC to enlist their help in battling the mouse war that's been raging in my house (in Columbia Heights) for months. Doug came out and was incredibly informative, honest, and so, so nice. He told me that he felt that using his services would be a waste of our money, as it seems that we've gotten over the bulk of the problem. He outlined how to address future issues, and assured me that if we run into any problems with which we don't know how to deal, that we could call or email anytime and he would come back and reassess. Honestly, after an incredibly unhelpful visit from Orkin in which they did nothing to assuage concerns, Doug was such a nice breath of fresh air. We have a mice problem and I called american pest control to do an assessment. I do a lot of DIY and i caught 7-8 mice so far. Cleaning up after each kill and also not sure how long will this take made me consult with the professionals. I called on Monday and Brian visited us on Wednesday. He did a assessment and told me that most of the things I do are correct and if i keep at it i may not need their service! This is what i call a pro service. He could have said i needed to sign up for the service and needed quarterly visits for a year. But he didn't. I asked for quotes in case i needed their service. Update: After 2 years the problem was back and my DIY work wasn't working anymore. The mice community were avoiding all the traps and I had them on camera that i had on for all night. So I signed up for a contract with APC for mice and also they helped me with carpenter ants problem I had. They resolved both issues very quickly. I am rebuilding my house and probably will have another contract with them after we are done. read more

I have a small rowhouse in DC that mice seemed to find irresistible- after using Termininx and talking to other pest control companies I was resigned to the fact that mice could always find a way in. Luckily, I found American Pest on Yelp and decided to give them a call. I am THRILLED to report that I have never seen any mice or evidence of any type of rodent since I have been a customer of American Pest! They come out every other month and check the exterior of my house, and even make special visits at no additional charge if there is a reason to. I just called them last week because I wanted a hole filled that rodents may have been able to use for entry - they arrived on schedule, and the technician- Nate was cheerful and professional. I also can't believe that APM doesn't have more reviews. They are awesome, simply put. I've been recommending for years, ever since I worked in the field of least-toxic pest management (i.e. deal with the root cause like how they get in, instead of the ol spray and pray method). A few years ago in our co-op, we had a serious cockroach issue in the basement (like seeing 20 at a time). We also had lots of little kids and cats in the building, so were looking for a least toxic solution. APM came out, and within one season, the cockroach problem was solved. In the next 6 years, I think I saw under 10, and I would bet that they were lost. I just hired them to come inspect our new home in MD, and true to form, they were super prompt, easy to schedule, so friendly, and did an awesome job. Did I mention that they're also inexpensive? When the inspector came over for the initial, free, walk through, he answered all my questions and pointed out all that he recommended that they do. That day, I had also been struggling with a loose downspout. He noticed, and went to his truck, grabbed his drill, and screwed it back together for me. Talk about service. I just had my first treatment and not only does it include baiting and some spraying where necessary, but also caulking holes, knocking down spiderwebs, and recommending what we can do to prevent pests. I'm so happy that these guys are around and doing awesome work. read more

Pretty disappointed overall with my experience to have American Pest exterminate a bed bug issue. While they seemed knowledgeable, they kept getting my phone number wrong (despite me updating it several times), resulting in missed phone calls, the technician's arrived late the day of the heat treatment and didn't seem to have read the inspection report that was done the week prior. I had to ask to get the heat treatment report which they should have automatically sent to me. In reading it, they said the technician's were there from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm (which is not true). Again, they arrived late and left much earlier than the 5:30 pm indicated on the report. They also do not guarantee their work for row homes - I knew this going into it and accepted that - however, it's a very pricey treatment and to not even guarantee one week is in my opinion, poor business. Not only that, I've continued to get bites so I don't believe the heat treatment worked. Save your money and find another company. read more

I really appreciate honesty in any home service. This company was great in that the technician diagnosed that the roaches found in the house was not from indoor but from outdoor so he treated outside and said this would take care of the issue. I appreciate the knowledge and experience the technician has and the good service at the appointment call. Very courteous and attentive to the issue. Price was much better than most other companies I called around. Follow-up treatment is a complimentary so this is another great bonus. I needed a wood destroying pest report for a VA home refinance. The inspector performed the inspection last Friday and said he would send the report to me either that evening or the following Monday. From a commercial standpoint, I would not recommend their services. We were acquired as a customer when our local company sold to American Pest. The service and communication was instantly non-existent. Even during a pandemic, when every company you're affiliated with or not, is telling you how they're resuming service and assisting customers, American Pest was completely MIA. One of the things I told my husband before we married was that I must have a pest control company care for whatever home we live in. I hate bugs, crickets, spiders, ants, you name it, in the house. ICK! We have been with American Pest since 2007. We receive their bi-monthly service. They are always prompt, courteous and thorough. If I've ever had an unusual pest issue pop up that the regular service didn't take care of, they would come out and analyze the problem immediately. They have always effectively remedied the situation. We have a 3 year old, twin 11 month old infants and two large dogs. The thought of chemicals around made me nervous but the company uses an agent that makes living a pest-free life safe! After finding a few wandering carpenter ants in my home I decided to have someone out to inspect the situation. I contacted American Pest Control based on prior reviews and received a free inspection from Brian. He thoroughly inspected my home and stated that he was unable to find any carpenter ant nests. He further stated that based on this he could not comfortably recommend that we receive a costly home treatment. Where another company may have recommended that we spend hundreds of dollars to have our home treated, Brian took the time to give an honest assessment and explain why we may have seen a few of the ants. He even told me what to look for and said that if we saw a further problem to call them and they would come back out to re-inspect. Although I can not comment on their treatments/work, I would highly recommend such an ethical company. read more

I called American Pest about two years ago to help with a spider and ant infestation at my home in Germantown. It was my first time ever using a pest company. I signed up for quarterly service, which includes free visits in between services in case the issue is not resolved. I was assigned Ian as my technician and they try to keep him as my tech for each visit, which is nice. Ian is great! He's timely to appointments and very professional. He even chats while he sprays for pests and remembers my stories, pretty impressive! American Pest has helped me get my ant and spider issues under control, what a relief! They came to my rental property and were on time and performed a comprehensive review and fix. It was a little expensive but we will see how they perform on the two possible follow ups if needed. Technician was knowledgable and communicated via a detailed report as well as verbally the gist of the issue. 4 stars for now; if the follow up and results are good they deserve 5 stars.
