They had a beautiful sparkly emerald green violin that caught my eye and made me wish I played violin instead of viola growing up. Conn-Selmer, the parent company of Bach, is working with tubist Chuck Daellenbach of Canadian Brass on a new tuba design that I got a peak at while visiting the factory. The staff is extremely passionate and proud of the products they produce, and are super helpful when it come to picking an instrument. I was here with Canadian Brass choosing an entire arsenal of Bach instruments: C trumpet, Bb trumpet, cornet, Eb trumpet, piccolo, and flugel (I chose a Conn flugel). Bach is famous for their beautiful sounding hand-hammered bells. The quality of every instrument I played was consistently high, yet each had unique qualities that made choosing the right one a true joy. I came away with 6 incredible instruments and a handful of great memories hanging out with the great people at the Bach factory of Conn-Selmer!

The inventory caters to guitarists and bassists, primarily, but they will occasionally have a drum kit or two in the store as well. I peaked at a high-end-Gretsch, a vintage Fender jazz bass, and a blackface Bassman amp they had kicking around. I might have walked out with an impulse purchase if I hadn't been so pressed for time. The whole place was clean and well organized - not often a feature common to music shops. They had a wonderful selection of 60s-70s music playing in-store. Both Andy and Mike seem to love what they do; there was none of the jadedness you often find in retail. I'd highly recommend them, and I also recommend checking out the owner's pet project, a recording studio called "Dirty White Couch."

After 6 weeks of run-around from the Ryobi company, I was told by the Ryobi company to take my equipment to a service center. Not wishing to drive into Chicago, I opted to drive a little farther, back to Goshen where I was already familiar with the area and this company in particular. Zach was my contact person at Erv's and he did an EXCELLENT job of going to bat for me. He took the case to the parent company (wisely by-passing the runaround I had experienced with Ryobi) and after several rounds, he prevailed in getting all the issues resolved to proper satisfaction. He exemplified what customer service ought to look like everywhere, all the time. He was a gentleman and needed no prodding or convincing - he just did the right thing from the very beginning. It was well worth my two separate trips halfway across the state to have my faith in humanity be given the boost it received from interacting with such a competent customer service representative.
