Very satisfied with the work this company did for us! They performed a tune up on our front door and 10 casement windows. The front door had gaps with air leaks and our smart lock couldn't properly lock due to the latch not catching the door when closed. They fixed it perfectly! We thought the windows were original due to the building construction being from the 1930s but it appears the previous owner (a subpar flipper) custom-made these windows to match the style of the building and did an absolutely terrible job. The construction of them is low quality and they did nothing to prevent water intrusion or air leaks. We had water coming through with the winter rains and heat during hot days. It was very easy to receive a quote from Nick with transparent pricing and he offered to come perform the repairs when he had a free day in his schedule. He followed through with that offer, and because we were flexible, we had the windows tuned up within two weeks of my first request and the job took one day. His crew was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and clean during their visit. Opening and closing the windows is completely different than before. They are snug when closed and the waterproofing is consistent with the standard for these style of windows. I immediately could tell the difference when the AC was in use later that day. Usually, there is a temperature difference between our bedroom, living room, and kitchen and we have sensors in each room. Now, they are all reading the same temperature and you can feel it in the air. That type of comfort is well worth the small investment if you are someone who is temperature sensitive. I have no doubt the rain won't come in the next time it covers LA! Preserve your architecture and hire a company like this to help extend their lifespan or create custom ones that will last even longer. read more

Nick and his crew are miracle workers for old houses and wood windows. I met with a few companies and most tried to over sell me with entire new windows, frames and sashes. But that would mean breaking stucco and walls, scaffolding, repair work, etc. I also received a quote from one other company that does window restoration work, and their quote was twice as expensive, a much shorter warranty, and less "included" work. Nick and team replaced 15 windows and a door for me on an old 1920s multi-story home. They never complained about anything and just got it done. It took 3 1/2 days. We recently moved into a house with almost 90 year old windows that were completely painted shut with a few cracked panes of glass. I preferred to restore rather than replace, and ended up going with Nick's quote. After 3-4 months on the waitlist, I checked in and they ended up being ready for us a couple weeks later after the rain died down. We did tuneups and weatherstripping across ten double hung windows, including replacing an old casement window with a custom built double hung to match the rest of our windows. 5 of the original sashes were also rebuilt due to dry rot (or as Nick put it - "those windows were wasted" lol). The windows he built on site were amazing, and the craftsmanship is excellent. We also had them tune up our front door - it was a little warped, so they got it all squared up. Overall, it was two days of work. The only minor drawbacks I had were just related to attention to detail with a couple of the guys on his crew. On a couple of the windows where the jamb was removed to take the sashes out, the trim piece cracked and they put it back with a bunch of caulk to fill in the crack. It wasn't done very neatly, so I had to fix that before painting. Also, the guy who worked on my door installed a new door threshold, but he put it in crooked and didn't put the trim back quite right, again using a ton of caulk to fill in a gap. I ended up having to remove the threshold and reinstall it straight. Not the end of the world, but I just think a couple of the guys on his team are still learning the ropes. It wouldn't keep me from working with them in the future, but just make sure you take a closer look at their work before they leave. read more

Nick and his crew replaced old, cracked windows and repaired old rope sash and pulley mechanisms in my 1906 Craftsman house. Overall, the work was excellent and he showed an understanding for working with an old home and keeping things compatible with the original look. Once I got slotted into his busy schedule, everything proceeded smoothly. I'm taking off a star because at the end, the new windows were all smudged up on the outside. I asked if they were going to clean off the new windows, and he said no. He knew I was planning to repaint, and he said the house painters would clean up the windows. I thought that was odd, leaving smudged up new windows marring the look of their otherwise good work. (The windows in question are high up or otherwise hard for me to reach, otherwise I'd wash them myself.) It was ten months until we were ready to paint. The house painter laughed when I mentioned that the window installers said his crew should clean those new windows while they were at it. I think he was kind of insulted -- they're painters, not window cleaners, after all. The painters also noticed that one of our new windows was missing the glazing, something no one noticed when Nick's crew wrapped things up. So, I do recommend American Window Restoration, but with reservations. If I could go back, I'd insist that they clean up the nice brand new windows that they installed, and have a more careful walk-through at the end. read more

If you're patient and work around Nick's availability, the wait will be worth it. He and his crew do something that is almost unheard of. They actually build new windows on site from scratch. This alone is worth every penny since you can let the professionals measure to exact specifications and install and adjust accordingly. I'm starting a new kitchen remodel and Nick installed two new double hung windows to replace ones previously removed by previous owners. He also built three new casement windows in an adjoining room. I read one review that seemed to complain about the new glass being all smeared. Since the window glass gets glazed, it's important to let it cure for two weeks before you even worry about wiping the glass down and disturbing the fresh glaze that has still not fully cured. The wiping and blading off the overglaze is a post install task that should be done much later, so I wouldn't penalize their rating just for that as another reviewer did. All in all, Nick knows his stuff and you'll be in good hands if you are patient enough to wait a bit until he fits you into his schedule. read more

I am writing this review because I had Nick come out and quote me on a job that was just under $7k total. We wanted to go with this company because we felt they could do the best work and understood what we were after. We corresponded on the same email chain for about two weeks, Nick was a little late in getting back to me. I had approved the quote and inquired about the deposit process. After no response, I emailed several more times over the course of a month with no answer. I was hoping to get all the paperwork, etc. done to get in the queue as their wait time was 3-4 months out. I finally called and Nick answered, somehow forgetting I had ever replied to the quote in the first place, he said he would look into it and then call me back but now the timeline for the job was yet another 3-4 months out from the day I called in May because I wasn't in the calendar. He never called. I read the few 1 and 2 star reviews that stated the same exact thing. If they didn't want to do my job they should have said so in the first place, but I didn't get that impression when Nick came by. He was really informative and seemed onboard to do the job. I own a 1920's spanish apartment building where some of the windows were are at a point where they needed to be replaced - they were beyond repair and I wanted to replace them with similar windows in the original style. I could have replaced with aluminum or plastic but I really like to keep things original. I spent quite a bit of time trying to find somebody who could replicate the original windows and finally came across Nick at American Window Restoration. Once I gave Nick the go-ahead he was able to make entirely new windows and fit them within a week. Once painted they will look perfect and will have retained the character of the building. Yes, it would probably have been cheaper to order new windows from Home Depot, but it would have cheapened the building and I would forever have been annoyed by the look! read more

I really don't know why there are so many 5 star reviews because my experience with American Window Restoration was really disappointing. First, like everyone says, the wait time is about three months. In those three months you'll never know if you're in the queue or not. You just hope and pray you'll hear back from Nick the owner. I was hopeful and waited because of all of these great reviews, but please don't waste your time or money. Nick is a nice guy, sure, but he shouldn't be the owner, scheduler and project manager. This guy does not have the time. He wants to get through jobs quickly. He installs window stripping and locks in colors he doesn't run by you, the customer, first. It was just a lot of no communication and then a nearly $4K invoice after everything was not said and thoughtlessly done. One star given because he did reduce the invoice because of all the miscommunication. The kicker, Nick is so bad at communicating and has no time that even trying to pay the invoice took weeks because it would take him days/a week to get back with information on how to pay him. These guys are the best! We have an old 112 year old craftsman which had some stuck double hung windows, no weather stripping on any fenestrations and giant gaps in our casement windows. They did the most incredible job restoring them. There was a casement window that we wanted double hung, and we ended up asking them to fabricate that one and another new window as well. We had fire damage right after Nick and his team restored our windows. I called him again and he managed to squeeze us in and fixed all of newly damaged ones in a day. I bought my house in Sherman Oaks in 2009-a 1952 San Fernando Valley home with original wood windows. I didn't like the idea of replacing them with newer vinyl windows as I like their aesthetics. I have 14 windows in all--four of them have never opened at all since I've owned the house. So, I searched out a company that could do some sort of wood window restoration. I found Nick's company through Yelp and checked out his website as well. I wasn't in a hurry (you shouldn't be either...)-- I think we agreed on the estimate mid January 2023, and his company did the project yesterday, April 3, 2023. Communication with Nick via email and texts was simple. They did all 14 windows in one day. They took out each window and restored them, weather proofed them, and replaced the original mechanisms. Nick's staff was great too. All of my windows open and close like normal now. All windows opened easily and stayed at the position that they were open to. I am attaching a few photos. Nick gave me an estimate to tune all of my double hung wood windows a few months ago. He was super straightforward, honest. This tune includes balancing, weather sealing etc. I was in no rush and the wait was worth it. Nick and his team came Friday morning and worked nonstop, very efficiently and with minimal disruption and finished by about 4pm. Like many reviewers I was shocked!!! that my previously wacky windows functioned better than ever. Just like new, plus the benefit of sealing. Wow, I cannot believe the magic that Nick and his team do to windows! We have a ton of sash windows that were a wreck (guillotine windows that we've be injured by trying to open and close). Nick and his team were professional and prompt. They were able to get our windows working so they can slide both ways and stay in position with ease! I was debating getting new vinyl windows but like the look of the old wooden windows we have and knew if we restored our wood windows, they'd last longer than new vinyl ones.
