We picked up some food today and the portion sizes were much more generous then expected. The bread that came with our food today was also almost half a loaf and very delicious. My friend and I came here for a morning bite/brunch after our run and we both really enjoyed it! Their daily special flavored coffee was sooo good! It was the amaretto roast and I would come back just for this coffee! The food was pretty good too, I wanted oats but they didn't offer them (surprising since there were over 200 items on the menu!) so got an açaí bowl instead. I'd never had one before but I would probably order it again. My friend got the s'mores crepe and couldn't eat it fast enough! The atmosphere was nice, but a little outdated and awkwardly quiet at times since we were the only ones in there except for the staff. Would it even be a deli if there weren't 123859301057 sandwich choices?!? Amer's tries to compete with other delis in the area like Maize 'n Blue and Zingerman's. I've never been to Zingerman's but I have been to Maize 'n Blue, and I don't think Amer's is quite as good. However, that's not to say that Amer's does not make a mean sandwich! Like I said, there are probably 100 sandwich choices, including all types of meats like corned beef, pastrami, roast beef, turkey, chicken, and even veggie options. It's definitely overwhelming, but I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of them. They have sandwiches that go from small, medium, to large, and price varies from around $7 for small to about $12,13 for large. Expect to pay around $10-$11 here. I ordered the #49 Tongue Twister -- turkey, roast beef, cheese, and slaw on an onion roll. I had to wait about 10 minutes for take out, which was kind of long (I think they were understaffed on a Saturday night). When it came, it was good with a decent serving of meat on it. The slaw was a nice fresh addition, and worked really well with the sandwich. The only thing was that I had wished it was a warm sandwich. You can't really tell from the menu which sandwiches will be hot or cold -- that's something that I would change. But regardless, it was a good sandwich. The regular size felt a little small for the price, but it wasn't outrageous. One thing I have to say about this place is that they do EVERYTHING. Not only do they have sandwiches, but they have frozen yogurt, ice cream, acai bowls, coffee, and they even serve all day breakfast. It's kind of ridiculous. I'm not typically a sandwich person. Actually, I usually actively avoid sandwiches. But, I love Amers! I come here way too often. This place is so affordable, and so convenient for campus. It's a great place to come for a quick bite! They have so many sandwich options, it's honestly overwhelming! Personally, I think they make the world's best BLT. In case it isn't obvious, the proximity to campus makes this a prime place for undergrads to grab a bite, study, chat, etc. Much like the ERC just down the way, Amer's can get kinda loud for this reason. But that shouldn't completely deter you from checking it out. As long as you don't need a super-quiet place to work, this is a good bet for a quick, affordable lunch. There are some really substantial salads here -- the Heidi is a personal fave (tuna salad over greens), a myriad of sandwich options, tea, the good types o' chips, and juice drinks. The staff is generally nice. So yes, great place for a speedy, often healthy lunch. Not a favorite place to work because of the noise. The other minus on the place-to-work-front is that though the wifi is free, it seems pretty slow and in-and-out at times. read more

I'm so torn. They have a huge selection of cold stuff, but the sandwiches are pretty expensive. The deli case also holds plenty of strict veg options. I had the worst lentil soup ever concocted here. I mean, it was completely inedible-- even after dumping lemon, salt, pepper & hot sauce into it. If anyone from the Mediterranean had been around, it might've started a war. I love this place for their açaí bowls! It can be hard to find fresh yummy fruit in Ann Arbor and the bowls have tons of it! You can also customize your bowl with your fruit preferences. I also had one of the best vanilla lattes I've ever had, and I've had lots. Sometimes they can be too sweet for me, but this one was perfect. The pricing is also very reasonable, and there is plenty of seating. Now that I work on State St., Amer's has become my go-to spot for dining alone for lunch. It's a good place to bring your laptop or book and enjoy your food. However, I now know to stick to their soups and prepared items from the deli case. All the soups I've tried have been pretty good, and they always have at least 3 types each day. I really enjoy their gazpacho in the summer. And it comes with a nice hunk of bread. A lunch of soup, bread, and a small side of pasta salad usually comes to $5 - not bad! (FYI - Church St. location is NOT as good for soups) As for the sandwiches, I've almost always been disappointed. They are usually dry or flavorless, and pricey. If you're desperate for a sandwich, I would stick to a grilled one. It's possible I just don't pick well - there are hundreds of sandwiches on the wall (or at least it seems that way). I like coming here - its cozy, the workers are nice, and on a cold day, nothing beats a hot bowl of soup. read more

I know their sandwiches are popular, but try the ready-made salads and the spinach pie. I picked up pesto tortellini, gnocchi with cheese and potato salad this week. I guess I have a cold pasta fetish. I love the spinach pies and meat pies. The pastry is great--more bready and less like a pie crust. Everybody in Amir's is a college student, and maybe that has to do with the funky atmosphere--there's something very college-town about the brick walls, tile floor and wooden furniture. I had lunch here a few days ago and it looked like one of the striking grad instructors was holding classes here, rather than set foot on campus. When I was a student the Communist Party was recruiting members on campus, and I met with them a couple of times at the other Amer's in the Union. Actually, it was Cava Java back then. They used to stand outside the back doors of Mason Hall on the diag and whisper: "Are you interested in revolution?" We ordered Amer's Monday night for dinner. We've been ordering dinner a lot lately due to the fact I've been avoiding grocery stores, with the exception of Trader Joe's, which I will review next! So, where do I start? We ordered two sandwiches, one Turkey and one Turkey bacon. (Sorry I forgot the actual names of the sandwiches. They have names for them!) we also ordered a chicken noodle soup, and an açaí (amazon) bowl. 55.00 ordered thru door dash. Not cheap, but omg sooooo good. If I could have an amazon bowl everyday I would. Those things are amazing. It comes with coconut, honey, strawberries. Banana's, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, and the açaí stuff in the bottom-which is a cross between a sherbet and yogurt? Anyone? Help me out here!!! The taste is amazing. It's like a power bowl so filling and pretty darn healthy. Sandwiches are great, oh and I ordered some red skin potato salad which was very good as well. Will def be going here more often! One of the last independents on State Street, which is reason enough to support them. Props to the owners for constantly trying to keep up with trends appealing to the undergrads: frozen yogurt, Crêpes, acai bowls. Still, I prefer the sandwiches and the deli case. If you're looking for something savory in the afternoon that's moderately healthy and not too expensive (pita, hummus, and salad for under $5), this is a great option. If you want sweet, they've got that, too. I like the remodel and downsized design. It's cozier while still providing plenty of seating. Try the high tables along the sides. read more

I do not mean to be unkind in this review. The people who took our order were kind and pleasant. And I had not been to Amer's for a number of years. I remember liking items in their deli case. Middle Eastern and Mediterranean fare mostly. Yet this review, and the two stars, comes down to one bottom line: the Reuben. I am currently on a hunt for the best Reuben in Ann Arbor. I have had most of the Reubens on offer from Zingerman's. I have had a truly horrible one from Ahmo's. I had a surprisingly good one from the Fleetwood. Still, the search continues. I will not render final judgement till every last vote has been tallied. But...to stretch the election metaphor...Amer's Reuben, while better than Ahmo's, has had to make an early exit from the primaries. Some candidates lack money or public support. Amer's Reuben lacks flavor. The person I was with refused (rightly) to finish hers. She said it had about as much flavor as cardboard. ...Maybe I have spoiled her with too many visits to Zingerman's? Either way. She's right. Amer's seemed to have a lot of folks coming in for frozen yogurt. Who knows? Maybe THAT'S good? Meanwhile, the race for best Reuben must go on. Yup, three stars. Ate here just to eat here on the worst day to eat here (had to battle the line of people getting free cone day at Ben and Jerry's). They've remodeled the place so its much smaller. Like, all the hang-out/eat-space is gone. There's like four tables at the front and maybe another four against the wall. It was pretty chill when I walked in and the staff was very friendly with me. All their sandwiches are arranged by meat which was nice. And I enjoyed my Reuben, but I'm not sure I $9.99-enjoyed it. They've also got a whole slew of sides. The small side of potato salad (~$2.63) wasn't bad but it definitely did not blow me away. All in all, it was a positive experience and I'd eat here again--it's just not on the list of my top favorite go-to places. read more

When we went it was very busy and I felt for the employees. The owner explained they were understaffed and doing the best they could, and boy they were hustling, especially the owner! I really appreciated it, and it helped me overlook an later to go pickup time then told and a mistake on our order (reasons I do have to take away a star). But we got one of the turkey sandwiches and an açaí bowl and both were delicious! Really strange they just sprinkled the added whey protein on top instead of mixing in, but we did it and it was delicious! Horrible visit today @ 11:45 AM at your State Street location. I attempted to order a Reuben sandwich on pumpernickel. They were out of the bread, so I chose rye instead. 1. The "toasted" bread was not toasted. 2. The "hot" corn beef was cold. 3. The kraut was soggy and wet which made the entire sandwich a sloppy mess. It doesn't end there... I love the booths all the way in the back that are closed off. This review actually reflects my recent experience at the other Amers, the one by the Forest St. Parking Garage (the Church St. location)--but I imagine it applies across the board. Wandered in here the other day while spying on the Charley's patio to see if a friend was there. I didn't need a whole sandwich but--look! Froyo! Tart AND untart. I think this is a new-ish addition. I like that it's serve yourself and sold by weight. I like the variety of flavors (pumpkin tart? Yummy!). I like all the toppings. I like that this froyo did not have the chalky aftertaste that I disliked at YogoBliss. I didn't like that the smallest container available was GINORMOUS. Of course you have the right to put as little yogurt in it as you like...but it seems like deliberate manipulation to get you to wind up with way more than you bargained for. I was pretty careful, filled the smallest container barely halfway, and still had more than I needed/wanted. But now that I know this is here, I'll probably get yogurt here again. Well, maybe next spring, which will be the next time I'm warm enough to want it. read more

A friend and I spent a week working on the University of Michigan campus and were told by some locals to check out Amer's for great sandwiches. The sandwiches were awesome but what I really liked about the place was the staff. They were incredibly friendly and after our first visit they knew us by name. They also made great recommendations on some of the menu items. My favorites in particular were the turkey reuben and the midwest club. Also their falafel is perfect, probably the best I've ever had. The only thing I didn't like was the pickles. I told the staff this was my only objection and they politely accepted my criticism. I will give them credit because they make the pickles themselves, and I respect that. My husband loves sandwiches. Amer's has dozens of choices for him. Close to a hundred, I'm sure... lucky for me, at least a dozen of them are vegetarian. I've never had a bad sandwich here. I've had some bland ones, but it's nothing a bit of salt or some sauce can't cure. They also have soup, a variety of cakes / cupcakes, tart yogurt and a Chicago Red's hot dog counter. Man that is a large ass menu! I am visiting from California, and my first breakfast in Ann Arbor was Amer's egg sandwich on Challah. Maybe it was because I had been travelling for 8 hours, or maybe it was because I was starving, but I thoroughly enjoyed that sandwich. I made love to it. I cherished it. Pretty simple, 2 fried eggs, lettuce, tomato, on challah, but everything was done so well! Fried eggs were crisp on the outside, yet the yolk was gooey. Although Amer's deli items are slightly overpriced, and the tables are often filled with annoyingly chatty undergrads, I have found this to be a great spot to sit and study for hours. I usually get the chicken salad (hunks of freshly roasted chicken delicately seasoned with mayo, a smige of onion and crisp celery). The wi-fi here is great! The seats and tables are not so comfortable. The bathroom is usually filthy (yech!) and the tables could often do with seeing an occassional wipe-down. But, I do love the pay-by-weight frozen yougurt with toppings. I layer fresh berries (rasberry, strawberry, blueberry, boysenberry) in my bowl first and then top with a healthy dose of tart berry frozen yogurt. YUM! I love the fact that I can sit here for hours and eat in courses: Some hunks of freshly-baked bread with real butter, then a while later my chicken salad, then an hour or two later so frozen yogurt. Meh. The ingredients are fresh, the service is fast, and it's a nice easy place to meet with a group, but given the prices (read: the fact that you can get a sandwich from Zingerman's for a dollar or two more), I'm not particularly impressed. Anyone who thinks this is "healthy" is deluding themselves. Get a sandwich with any kind of condiment, and it will be absolutely slathered and bathed in said condiment. Case in point - Lox-o-Luck Bagel; good, fresh salmon, decent, soft bagel, and pretty much an entire container of cream cheese. Sandwiches with any kind of meat are dripping in grease. I leave this place with that feeling you get from McDonalds where everything smells like bacon and you feel like you've taken a grease sauna. read more

This is my FAVORITE place in Ann Arbor to get a sandwich- forget Zingermans! Their sandwich menu is ridiculously large, so prepare to have a hard time making a decision on what to have! I am a huge fan of their reubens...their sandwiches are massive and piled high with fixings. I have never had anything from the deli case, so I can't speak to that. But if you order a sammy, get the fries. They're great. I'm not into frozen yogurt, but if you are, they have a great frozen yogurt bar with a lot of toppings. read more

It took me a long time to warm up to this place. I used to go just to get a coffee and study at one of their booths. It's always loud, and the temperature is either way too hot or way too cold. And the coffee is the worst coffee in town. And their internet is spotty. Then, one day, I ordered a sandwich.. Amer's is, by far, the best sandwich place in town. All of their bread is fresh and delicious, proper deli bread. They have a great rye and an equally great sourdough. Also, their cheese. It's the only place in town besides Zingerman's that has this many varieties of high-quality cheese. And I'm seriously picky about my cheese. Also - major bonus: they just started offering Gluten Free Wraps, so now I can eat their sandwiches every day! yay! Seriously, the #43 Chicken Salad on a GF wrap is SO GOOD. Oh, their salads are awesome too. This is the place to go if you want a BIG SALAD. you know one of those delicious, feel-good, never-ending, stuff-yourself salads? They have those here. And the lettuce is fresh and hearty and green. I dislike that I have to pay a quarter to get a soda refill, but I guess it makes sense because so many people sit there the whole day and study. one final note - they also do breakfast here. Hardly anyone goes to Amer's for breakfast, but I would recommend it if you are looking for a standard eggs/toast/hashbrowns for cheap. The breakfast reminded me a lot of how my mom would make these items, and less like how a diner usually makes them (i.e. way less greasy than normal diner fare). And it was HUGE, a whole plate filled w. eggs hashbrowns and toast for $4. I think that might be the best breakfast deal in town. read more

Oh god, the belly rumble. My wife and I each ate a falafel sandwich with tabbouleh on the side. It tasted very good when I ate it, but it turned out to be one of those enjoy-now-regret-later things. I've gone back a few timessince to eat, get coffee, and study, and I think the two star "meh" rating sums it up. The sandwiches are pricey, which is understandable considering the location, but they're not particularly good. The coffee is fine, nothing to write home about. People looking for genuinely tart frozen yogurt will do better to go to the bubble tea place at the end of South University. Amer's bascally limps by because it has okay food and drink, not very outrageous prices, and a great location. The seating and atmosphere are okay for an hour or so but not cozy or even particularly comfortable. When I want to stay at a place for long, I'll choose either Espresso Royale next door or Starbucks because they have no internet. read more

Made to order, any sandwich can be customized, and no matter what, the portions are large, ingredients fresh, and price not awful. No deli trip is complete without a Dr. Brown's Soda. read more

On a good day, Amer's selection of a la carte salads, spreads, and proteins is just the ticket for my schizophrenic food-moodiness: I like being able to order a combination of foods that would never be paired on a conventional "plate." That said, I loathe the tofu, which is uncooked and unsteamed, and am also disappointed by the ubiquity of mayonnaise in salads that are appealing otherwise. Additionally, I would avoid ordering "Very Veggie" soup: I am convinced that it is Progresso's "Vegetable Soup" incognito. Cosi's "Moroccan Lentil" is a better bet. read more

Amer's has good deli sandwiches. My second-favorite sandwich place in town...but for me it's all about the salads and the prepared items in the deli case. Pasta/tuna/potato salads, hummus, various veggies, etc. It's great to have non-bread choices for lunch on campus! But if instead you're hankering for an affordable deli sandwich, they aim to please. So many choices and combinations. I like that I can get my sandwich on pita bread sometimes (it's really good w/their tuna salad and some avocado). They boast a wide selection of coffee and tea drinks. If you're really jonesing for a sweet, check out their famous cake selection. read more

This quick trek from work is a great place to grab some brisket and a basket of fries. Plus they have a decent salad for $3.49 --- it is what it is. I love their smoothies, also -- some are made with Looza, some are made with fresh fruit. Either way they go into my happy tummy. Their espresso drinks are also less expensive than their neighboring cafes -- quality is debatable, but even the picky might be able to settle. There are also a selection of pre-made salads you can buy according to weight. FYI if you're especially broke: Ask for a buck fifty's worth of food and you'll get a heel of bread with it. Butter that baby up and maybe you'll feel full. I've been there, at the border of brokeassedness. Maybe add a 75 cent banana into the mix and you're all good. read more

Largest selection of menu items I've seen. Sandwiches and salads are in hearty proportion (you get what you pay for). I appreciate that. Frozen yogurt got me through undergrad. My favorite location was when they were in the Michigan Union but times have changed. They used to have a wide loose leaf tea selection so I'm disappointed that they have shifted to a more tea bag system. Realized their acai bowls have a lot of added sugar (they use the sorbet rather than the 0 sugar added version). Not purchasing those anymore. Amer's has a special place in my heart but I can tell they are not doing as well as they were before. Hopefully slight restructuring will get them going again! read more

I've been to Amer's many times but never got around to writing a review for them... Deli Section: I'll start off by saying that all sandwiches here are generously stuffed with whatever it is you're ordering, so, unless you really love meat, a Small or Regular should suffice. On my most recent visit, I ordered the Brooklyn Reuben. I ordered the Supper so the corned beef portions were ridiculously huge. The meat itself was sub-par: meat was somewhat bland probably because they didn't brine it very well and the bread's exterior was so tough that it slices through your mouth. Before that I ordered the Chicken Pesto sandwich which was pretty good. Again, the protein portions were huge and the bread sliced through your mouth but everything else was delicious. Hot Dog Section: While there are other many other hot dog vendors across AA, I've always enjoyed Amer's dogs because their ingredients were always relatively fresh. The only downside is how they prepare their actual hot dogs which is heated in a hot water bath. If they grilled the hot dogs, it would be perfection. If you get a chance to dine here, definitely try their Chicago Dogs! Their french fries are also made to order and another great choice. Frozen Yogurt Section: Not much to say here; I was never a fan of Amer's frozen yogurt mainly because it always comes out so runny as if the yogurt wasn't kept at a proper temperature. However, their selection of toppings is very abundant ranging from cereals to chocolates to fruits. Overall, while the Deli section wouldn't be my first choice, I've found their hot dog section to be the redeeming quality here. I'll be back to try their breakfast menu sometime and do an update. read more

WOO HOO! As a Deli Sandwich place, I give them 5 Stars hands down! If you're going there for coffee or juice, go around the corner elsewhere for both. However, you can certainly get decent sodas, juices, coffees, etc. as the drink to go with your FANTASTIC sandwich or other lunch delight. I'll take an Izze Pomegranate soda w/ my lunch thank you. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: The BEST Amer's location with the best service and best put together sandwiches is on S. State street across from campus, around the corner from Borders downtown. I've been to the other one right on campus, and while it's o-k (food is stil good) I don't like it as much as S. State's location. Can location make food taste better? sometimes... MMM SAMMICHES (as they say in Boston): If you love chowing down meat, or taking it veggie style Amer's has everything. They even have awesome side salads, and I highly recommend anything from the Middle Eastern selection.
