Brought my daughter here for her birthday in April, and she also brought me here for my birthday in March. Still great food, service was on point. Always a pleasure to see the owner Shaun working. Never have we had a bad experience with the food or service. I've seen a few complaints about service, and to that I say, Do they get busy? ABSOLUTELY! Do people make mistakes? I know I do! Things are easily corrected and people anymore need to have a little patients. The owner of this establishment gets his fish from all over, various countries, he chooses quality fish and you can tell. The salmon will melt in your mouth! This place has potential. I was pretty disappointed based on the yelp rating / reviews. The "best sushi" reviews here is mind boggling to me. The staff is friendly and the presentation of the food is wonderful. But I consider myself to be a quasi-connoisseur of sushi joints across the country...and I just don't think the price and the food are aligned. We ordered a lot of rolls and nigiri...as well as a dinner plate. The ratio of fish to rice and filler (e.g. cucumber) pretty much made the food very bland. Too much rice, a lot of cucumber and very lacking on the fish...pieces are small and thin. We could hardly taste any fish with every bite...all rice and cucumber. Also, there is NO rice vinegar / seasoning in their sushi rice....which is also a big reason for the blandness. I gave 2 stars...for the potential and the friendly staff, but none on the food...I'm hoping I just got here on a mediocre day, which is possible. There is a good selection of rolls and plates. Their final presentation is great and they are very friendly. They simply need to be more generous with the fish...the amount of fish on their rolls/nigiri just doesn't warrant the really high prices, compared to other top notch sushi joints in California, giving far more generous cuts of fish for the same price, or even less. I'm debating whether I'd give them another shot when I'm back in the area, when there are far better places just a short drive to Stockton. We shall see. read more

I was a little skeptical going to a sushi place in Lathrop since I didn't know what San Joaquin County had to offer in terms of food. I was so pleasantly surprised by this restaurant! My boyfriend chose Amici's for our little group to eat at and I'm so glad he did. The interior looks so fancy compared to other more casual sushi places. I was wearing sweats and I felt extremely under-dressed lol. It reminded me of a cute bistro. They were pretty busy when we walked in-- I noticed a large party of 10+ or more people in the middle of the restaurant, so they were pretty preoccupied with them and the rest of their tables. We were sat within a few minutes though. Our servers were very nice and friendly. We all decided to share large rolls, so we chose 5 of them. It took a little while for us to receive our rolls, but it was completely understandable since we came at a busy time. I'm not much of a "roll" person (usually get sashimi + nigiri) but since we were all sharing, I couldn't say no. I was surprised with how good their rolls were! Especially the roll called "The Delicious"! It was, truly, DELICIOUS! It was a hit amongst the table. I was also so shocked that for almost all their rolls, they use REAL crab meat. Most sushi places use imitation crab due to cost, but our rolls had actual fresh snow crab. AMAZING. The only thing I really didn't like was how large the plates were. Each roll was on their own plates, and the plates took up the entire table. I don't know why they couldn't save room and put some of the rolls together on one plate, but I guess that's just their style? Idk haha. Also, I didn't like how their water tasted like funny tap water, so I had to ask for extra cucumbers. Overall, I would come here again if I was ever in the area. The fish is fresh! They have specials based on fish available for purchase. I've tried many items, all of them good. My particular favorite is the Red Ocean made without rice, cucumbers are used instead. Sometimes I'll leave the avocado other times I'll ask him to make it without. Nice place with aesthetically pleasing dishes and great customer service but I left disappointed because the food didn't have much flavor. So disappointed... we brought family and friends to Amici all excited for an amazing meal. We arrived with a large party of ten at 7pm thankfully not too busy. The hostess said give me a few minutes and moved tables together about five minutes later she said we will just ad a couple chairs. We continued to wait and nothing. Finally we sat ourselves moving the additional chairs over to accommodate. We eventually were delivered menus and another 10 minutes go by we ask the hostess/ waitress if we can order and we have a few questions about the specials on the board. Her response was to throw us 2 order pads and say "write down what you want". I'm not sure what happened or if we offended her or what, but the attitude and disrespect was unacceptable. The entire party of ten felt it and after a couple minutes of discussion we got up and left. This has been our favorite sushi spot for years. We were so excited to once again bring family and friends there after not being able to dine in for almost a year. First time at this restaurant, out with the family to enjoy a nice dinner. Party of 5, we are seated at one of the bigger tables. They only had one waiter on the floor, took about 12 min to ask for our drink order. The waiter seem to be fairly new because the couple times I inquired about the menu he had to go check with that chef. We get our drinks and look over the menu for 10 min. The waiter is unable to answer my questions regarding the menu so he tells me he will send the chef over. He never gets there but his wife does to tell us to move tables because we are taking up a table that seats 8 people. I asked her "do we really have to move, we are already situated?" She says, yes you have to. I told her that was an inconvenience. She then says "ok, ok then hurry up and order, we are too busy!" Just like that! I told her that I didn't appreciate her rushing us that I had menu questions and no answers. She was awfully rude and continued rushing us to order. My husband then said "wait a min, why are you talking to us like that? You guys are the ones taking long, clearly you are understaffed." My husband and I were already pissed so I told him it was best that we go, our daughters looked very uncomfortable about this situation. The lady said "Yes, go! Just go!" Literally kicking us out but wanted us to pay water and tea!! It was just ridiculous! My husband was so mad he said "this is stupid" and she said "you're stupid!" I tried to talk to the owner and he was trying to understand the situation but his wife interrupted us by saying "I'm the owner too and bickering " At that point it was useless, we just left! I would never have thought that I would have one of the best Japanese meals on a road trip from Tahoe to Los Angeles. We were looking for lunch options but skipped Sacramento (too busy), Stockton (too removed from the highway) and all the typical fast food choices. We exited Louis Avenue off Interstate 5 because Yelp said that there were a handful of food eateries. One block from the freeway was Amici. We arrived at 2:00 at the end of lunch hour, but they said we could still order the lunch specials. The owner served us, and I was surprised when he asked how I wanted my salmon cooked. I pointed out that was the first time I was given an option. The owner explained that they use the same salmon that they use for sushi, and the proper way to grill is to ask how the customer wants the fish prepared. We also ordered the Power of Love roll. The food was delicious and reminded me of food that I had in Japan -- fresh, prepared with care and presented artistically. The owner was super friendly and warm. He wished us a good day when we left and said that he hoped to see us soon. I sure wish Amici was closer to us. I guess we'll just have to make more trips to Tahoe. read more

Seriously this is the best sushi place I've ever been to. My boyfriend & I live in Los Angeles and always make sure to stop here anytime we're driving up to the Bay or Sacramento. I can't believe the owner even remembered our name! He brings the sushi in fresh from the coast daily, and he's truly an artist. I don't think the locals out here know how spoiled they really are! We go to sushi spots all over L.A., and this guy is on par with the most expensive places we've been to. Can't wait to come back! I've been coming here since May 2015, and every time I come here - I have such an amazing experience (and I haven't even gotten to the food part yet). The experience I have sitting at the restaurant alone is not the typical. Why? It's not typical to have the owner of the restaurant greeting all of the guests. It's not typical to have the owner working alongside the waiters/waitresses in serving their guests and making sure they are well-tended to. It's especially not typical for the owner of the restaurant to remember your name 3 months after your first encounter. This sushi restaurant is superb, the BEST in the area and you wouldn't get any better restaurant anywhere else. Let's talk about the food. The items on the menu are unique and tasty - I've been to sushi restaurants all over the world, and I can tell Shawn (The Owner) creates his artistic rolls with fresh ingredients. The fish aren't obviously fresh out of the ocean, but they are freshly prepared and served. On multiple occasions after I've ordered something on the menu, I tend to want more. When I want more, I ask Shawn to "Surprise me". The way Shawn pays attention to what I've eaten, what kinds of ingredients that I like in my rolls, and what I'm allergic to, all plays into how he creates his artistic "surprises". Wow, it was so nice to find this place (through yelp) on our road trip. I'll take sushi over road trip food any day! The sushi was excellent, I mean, SUPER FRESH, they had quite a variety as well. We tried white tuna belly for the first time, and omg, AMAZING! I had one of the chefs special rolls, the Forever Love, which had crab salad (they use real crab too, rare to find in sushi restaurants) avocado, shrimp tempura inside and toro on top with a spicy mayo and green onion... Soooooo good, why didn't I order two?? My only complaint is that the majority of rolls contain shrimp tempura. I feel for this being Japanese run, they could make their rolls a bit more varied. Trust me, Americans like sushi without shrimp tempura too! You can tell by the flavors they have the ability to be amazing, it would be nice to see them not rely so heavily on one ingredient for flavor; let's see that creative genius, yes? HOWEVER, the variety and freshness of nigiri and sashimi choices definitely make up for this and add to the authenticity. The restaurant itself is very sleek, like an urban chic look. It's too bad we had to take our food on the road, next time we will have to stay and enjoy the decor along with the beautiful presentation of dishes we saw coming out as we waited for our order. I actually intended to go to Mikasa Sushi nearby because of all the good reviews. Being that I was very hungry and there was a long wait, I remembered seeing Amici Sushi pop up on friends' Facebook check-ins. I'm actually really glad that Mikasa didn't work out (tho I plan to still try it). The service was great! Our server was cool and told us that we were getting too much food (which I always appreciate), though we still decided we wanted to try several things. Both my friend and I loved the spicy tuna tacos. At first I thought the taco shells had been broken by accident, until I realized that they were supposed to look the way they did. I ordered the Jane and their special Flaming Koi rolls. My friend ordered the Power of Love and Spider rolls. They were big and so good, plus they do not skimp out on the fish! That right there was impressive enough. The owner came by to say hello and he was telling us that every one of their dishes were unique - and I believed him because the rolls that we got did have a different twist to them. The spider roll, for example, is one I usually get at other places, but this one had more added to it and it was delicious. I loved that the employees were really welcoming. The owner came by several times to make sure everything was okay (as he did with the other patrons in the restaurant) and shook our hands telling us to come back soon. This culinary gem is located in a very unexpected location and was an excellent sushi discovery for me. The fish is fresh and delicious. They have some delicious and unique rolls that satisfy the sushi explorer in many of us. The decor is in white, black and grey which is not typical but works. It's a small restaurant so it can get packed, but it is nicely decorated and very clean. We ordered several dishes. The Andy Roll, Shawn Roll, Crunch & Munch, Spider Lover, Philadelphia, and the Spicy Chicken Udon. All were great choices. Prices are affordable but I would rather pay a little extra knowing that the quality is a lot better than the cheap sushi restaurants. There was Deluxe Sashimi Moriawase, so fresh! And the Tuna Tartar...omg!! So good because it comes with these like pork rinds or something similar with it!! One of the BEST places to get salmon sashimi around the area. The Scottish salmon they serve here just melts in your mouth completely. 100 times smoother and silkier than butter. I ordered the 7 pieces and the pieces were thick and fat slices of salmon just how I like it. On top of that the fish is served with fresh wasabi which is fucking awesome! I've traveled to many sushi restaurants north of Lathrop to Sacramento/ Stockton/ Chico and Amici is by far my favorite restaurant to get raw salmon. Who knew that Lathrop, CA, just south of Stockton on the Louise exit off of I-5 would have such incredibly fresh, expertly prepared & delicious Japanese Cuisine?!!! We discovered this little jewel by accident, yesterday evening we made a point to return. I had the Sushi & Sashimi plate, plus two Tako Nigiri Sushi. Had Unagi for the first time along with fermented fresh wasabi. Unction is the only word I can think of to describe my meal. I live 250 miles away on the California Central Coast and frequently enjoy our local delicious Sushi & Sashimi restaurants. I used to work in SF, when i want to feel back in SF, I just go to Lathrop. Sounds crazy eh? Just take a visit for yourself. I recently went out with my wife on a date night there and I had a 13pc Sashimi, it felt good to know the waitress was Japanese and able to pronounce to me what i was ordering..good sign of service. The food is great, miso soup came out steaming hot, salad tastes great with real greens and the sashimi was explained to me in detail, just just fish thrown on a plate. I'm no sushi connoisseur, but damn this was good. The owner and creator of the menu welcomed us and doesn't forget a customers face, cause he acted like he knew my mom forever. The restaurant was different from other Japanese restaurants. Usually you see drab, dark or under lit restaurants. Here, it was open, clean, sleek, sexy, and classy with white chairs and tables. You think, that's brave going with white cause you see dirt, but it was clean. Then comes the food. Mom ordered a kimchee salad with cucumbers, mango, red onion and all kinds of stuff. It was perfect. Then her roll comes out. BIG serving and it held up to it's name....the delicious roll. Then mine came with a garlic sauce and fresh lemon juice squeezed. The fish was seared with a seasoning and delicious and also a large serving. The tempura wasn't your normal tasting tempura. It was yum-e as well. I'm already thinking of the next visit. Walking in we were presently surprised at the tasteful, modern and clean decor. So many choices on the menu and we were offered a suggestion as well. Our eyes must have been bigger than our stomach because we ordered way too many rolls. We had the veggetable fantasy, red ocean, and the Peyton roll. All were amazing with a perfect blend of flavors.
